ansgar Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Hey guys, I´ve been looking into this forum for a while now, and finally I registered myself. I have a few pictures for you. The figures are modified with “Brickforge” and "BrickTW"parts which I plated in chrome and gold. I hope you´ll like it! -Ansgar Weapons: Chrome and Gold coated sword: Quote
Dutch Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Chrome makes me a very happy person. Did you make these your self? Quote
BearHeart Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Very nice!! Nice picture quality too. Is chroming LEGO pieces easy to do? I'd want to do something like this to some of my LEGO armor too. Quote
RoryoCox Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Those are brilliant chrome pieces. I love the knight and the staff. How did you Chrome them? Quote
Perterz Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Great! Not a modder myself but I can see why other people do it and I enjoy it from time to time. These look pretty good! I've noticed the gold hips, never seen that before. The gold and chrome plating seems to be decent quality and looks awesome, well done! The last 2 weapons and last figure are just brilliant, which manufacturer are those shoulder pieces from? Welcome Quote
prateek Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Holy @!#$%^$#%^$# this made my day. I am overwhelmed by the awesomeness! Quote
CommanderFox Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 (edited) WOW! CHROME!! Thats some stunning weapons there ansgar Really nice job in chroming these weapons! Big Cam Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 I absolutely love these chrome pieces, especially the gold and chrome pieces. Quote
GoN2Broadway Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 These figures have been done quite wonderfully - and the chroming of the various elements really adds another dimension to the figures! If you have the time I would love to know the process you used to do this. I thought they might be electroplated with chrome, but that's a very expensive process to get into as well as involving work with carcinogenic chemicals and the need for special waste disposals. In addition, the multi-toned (gold and silver chrome)/multi-layered chrome effects make me think this is an application process rather than electroplating process. I don't know that much about the electroplating process, but it seems to me that it would be very difficult to get multiple sections different chrome colors (the spear is a great example). If you used a product to "chrome" them, I would love to know what you used as I have several elements that would look amazing in chrome mixes. I must also add that I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the application of the chrome - every detail of each of the Lego elements can be seen! Really wonderful job! Quote
YouKnowMe Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Wow, this is nice dude, a little chrome's always nice, but... This is really wonderful, might have to get some chrome parts too Quote
Sir Gecko Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 After some time sitting stunned by the shininess , I managed to press the reply. Elven blade is my fave. Quote
Alex the Great Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Wow that's really good, I always like chrome armour. I haven't seen hips done either, good job! Quote

ansgar Posted February 7, 2010 Author Posted February 7, 2010 Thanks for the nice comments. The parts are plated by vacuum metallizing. Each parts will be provided with a transparent lacquer before vaporizing. Afterwards the metal will be vapor-deposited in the vacuum and for a better durability the parts will be sealed with a transparent lacquer once again. For the gold parts I use real gold. @ Perterz The shoulders are from Brickforge @ Klaus these parts are unique and you can`t buy them, sorry Quote
Stash2Sixx Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Fantastic work. I love the custom weapon that troll is holding! Nice opportunity for a business....... Quote

I got something vacuum metalized by a private company before and it costed an arm+leg! If there's a way to be able to get it done at home, I'd love to get into it if the investment isn't too bad. Details please! Edited February 8, 2010 by etcknight Quote
Ras 74 Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 These are some really beautiful parts you got there! Would be interesting to know roughly what this costs? Espesially the Gold Quote
ansgar Posted February 8, 2010 Author Posted February 8, 2010 (edited) Here you can see some pictures of the metallizing process: There is no way to coat the parts at home. I use a minimum af 2000 parts for one charge to reduce the costs. For example I use 6g Gold for one charge of Gold parts. Edited February 8, 2010 by ansgar Quote
Gamer Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Really good custmisation ,but isnt it a bit too much to use gold? Gamer. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Is this a business venture in making chromed minifig gear, or do you own/work for a chrome plating company/business? Just interested. Those are some fancy looking weapons and really make the minifigures "pop". Fantastic Quote
