badboytje88 Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) Can you solve the riddle of the sphinx?! The Sphinx is a mythical creature with a human head but the body of a lion. It originated in ancient Egypt, and a large number of Sphinx statues survive to this day. The most famous of these is located at Giza, near modern-day Cairo. The Sphinx was later imported into Greek mythology, where the association with riddles began. Here, the Sphinx would challenge passers-by to answer her riddle, and would strangle anyone who could not answer. Her puzzle was finally solved by Oedipus, whereupon the Sphinx killed herself. Please leave them as they are now. EDIT: I made a decal for the Sphinx, not sure if I'll be able to aply it to the fig, but here it is: Credit goes to LuxorV, I used his Tinkerbell decal as a base for this decal. Matn Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) Good job, it gives a good image of the Sphinx. But maybe you can make it a bit longer, or a bit smaller to be in scale with the minifigure but it looks actually fine. It would be nice to use a decal of some sort. Maybe you can add some tan hair that's fading out at the bottom of her torso? Here's how to put your images up, do it like this (but without the *): [*IMG]http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2558/3694447726_19c958f43e.jpg[/*IMG] My guess is that you haven't deleted the "?v=0" from the imagelink from Flickr. EDIT: oh, and don't forget to add possible sets for this Greek mythology theme. Edited July 6, 2009 by Matn Quote
badboytje88 Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Thanks Matn for your comment. I tried to fix the images. But it didn't help... Think I do need the help of a mod to fix it... I really liked your entry too! Haven't had a chance to comment on it! I'm ashamed of myself Groetjes Bart Quote
LuxorV Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Nicely done, badboytje88. May I suggest you to change the theme name to 'Mythical creatures': it seems to fit better for the Sphinx; unless you mean to develope the 'Other sets for this theme' part as al ist of sets on Greek mythology, that is. And before people start asking: I think there is no problem of superpposition between tin7's and badboytje88's entries, as long as they do not use the same characters (that would be too much). Moreover, even if this character is partly brick-built, it still has enough MF parts to have space for MF customizing. As suggested by Matn, some decals would look great on it! LuxorV Quote
badboytje88 Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Thanks LuxorV for fixing the pics (three times in a row) I thought about making a decal for the figure. But I don't have a decent printer, and no decal paper... I will design a decal for the fig. If I'm able to put it on a torso, I highly doubt. Maybe if I use some duktape or something like that... LuxorV Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 No problem. I was following 2 or 3 threads in one time , and so things got a bit mixed upe before I could add the EDIT at the end of your post to let you know what I did . LuxorV Quote
Hound Knight Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 You sphinx looks great, I especially like the tail. tin7_creations Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) when i made my possible themes, i was told that characters used in the Hercules Disney movie were not allowed, so I was wondering about your 'Pegasus Army' thing, since Pegasus played a big role in the Disney movie... also the goddess character and the three headed dog that you are planning on using might cause some problems. Also, you've got your mythology mixed up a bit. Pegasus was ONE horse, you can't have a "Pegasus Army". The technical term for the species is 'winged horses', Pegasus was just the most famous of the winged horses, which is why you probably thought it was it's own species. Pegasus was born from the neck of Medusa after it was slain by Perseus. When Perseus slayed Medusa, 2 winged horses were born from her neck, Pegasus, and his brother Chrysaor. So perhaps, instead of 'Pegasus Army', you can create a 'Winged Horse' army, where you use Pegasus, and Chrysaor. Assuming Pegasus is allowed in this contest of course. Sorry with the mythology lesson, but I minor in mythical/classical studies... and the Pegasus/winged horse mix up thing is one of my pet peeves. One last thing, your theme is Greek Mythology. But I can guarantee 100% that a unicorn is not found anywhere in Greek mythology. The Ancient Greeks really believed that unicorns were real creatures, and that they existed somewhere in India, so they weren't classified as mythical. They were mythical in Medieval Europe however. That's right. I'm not in my best shape today Please, badboytje88, keep in mind that for the rules any mythological creature/being that has been used for merchandise lines (in this case Pegasus and the three-headed dog Cerberus, plus probaly the goddess) is not eligible as part of your theme. You may change to some other creatures, like Python, Scylla, Stymphalian Birds or Typhon (a bit difficult to render in LEGO form, this one). You can look here to have a quite complete table of the Greek mythological beasts. And Gaea, Rhea and Hestia (Roman Vesta) could be good choices for the goddess; I don't remember them being part of Hercules series (Disney or TV-series). LuxorV Quote
badboytje88 Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Ok I changed the name pegasus into winged horses. The three headed dog is a flying three headed dog. The godess figures are just random nameless pretty ladies in skirts. Am I ok with the rules now LuxorV? Quote

Not really sure how a flying three headed dog enters Greek mythology... but there were some strange creature in those days, so we may suppose this is one of not well know ones. LuxorV Quote
badboytje88 Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Well I still need to change my topics name into mythological creatures. So the Greek touch is gone. I made up the three headed flying dog If the dog can fly, it's easier to defeat the sea snake. Quote
LuxorV Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Topic title edited and up-dated in the Entries Index. Good choice imo, btw. LuxorV Quote
badboytje88 Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Thanks a lot LuxorV! You saved my topic Runs off to design decal right now! Quote
LuxorV Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Still one week to go, and ready for the voting, right? Good luck! LuxorV Quote
badboytje88 Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 My figs ready for the voting! Don't think I'll win this competition seeing the work some people put into designing decals and such, but I really enjoyed myself while making this minifig. So I don't really care. And if I'll win I'll get me a sheep, a pig and a scooter! Hurray! Quote
