Admiral Blockbeard Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 I am working on a little project. It is a board game that incorporates Lego called Brig Rat, it is likely to have sequels in different settings like castle. Below is a thumb of the front cover I have created using GIMP. (linked to 1400-1200 picture*) And here are the thumbs of the game cards! They are in need of the text to be finished (Linked to larger pics*) These were made using MLCad's Mini-Fig maker and some print screen then Gimp Magic! Beside these all you need to have the game is Monopoly Money and a few dice! Oh and the instructions (still in refining process) will post up later! after a few trials (me not playing) its a load of fun! Plays from 4 people up! (10 is great fun) You are the first (other than family to see this so feel privileged!) Regards Cpt. PB *when public
Quarryman Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 (edited) Sounds interesting, how does it work? What are your goals in the game, what kind of role does each player have? How much player interaction? Much, little, almost none? Any well-known games that are similar? (I'm quite fond of board games, currently working on making a web-version of this game, which was designed by a guy in a local gaming club here.) Edited September 13, 2008 by Quarryman
I Scream Clone Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Looking good so far Cpt! cant wait to see the rules etc. Cards look cool, Im guessing its a game where chaos ensues pretty quickly. Always a challenge to balance card abilities too (from my 10 years of MtGathering I spose)
WhiteFang Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Cpt P.B, this is very interesting. I am looking forward to see how this game can work out. By the way, the design of these playing cards are nicely designed.
Dragonator Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Those are sweet playing cards Blocky, I'm looking forward to finding out how this game of yours works!
Skipper 24 Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 (edited) The game sounds great fun and looks well designed. Also those cards look very professional . I can't wait to try it. Edited September 13, 2008 by Skipper 24
Admiral Blockbeard Posted September 14, 2008 Author Posted September 14, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the comments so far! This game is the prototype of the idea, and can be expanded upon. It should be noted that the cards were made using a template that I adjusted (I personally like the wood appearance) The Game front and card back ship picture was found on Google and altered a little. I am becoming familiar with Gimp but I am no where near talented enough to make an image like that! The basic game structure is a bit of chance and gamble. A brief description is as follows The players roll off to see what position they start in, the rankings are in the order of the pictures posted above (with the last being the back of the character card). Depending on what rank you are you get paid x amount of money. there is two options you can get paid or challenge rank, (duel) if you challenge and win you get twice the amount or $20 more, (depending on your rank). To win you need to either have the highest amount of cash at end of game or reach a set target of cash. However a twist occurs after 3 (6 or more players) or 5 (5 or less players) complete rounds, where people can bid blocks of $50 to double up on a 5 or 6, or if the person has less than $100 total, triple up on a 6, anything else they lose the money. This is where the brig rat comes into play, he can bid any amount, he doubles on a 5 and quadruples on a 6, again anything else they lose the bidded money. Also another twist is how the round goes, it starts with the Lord Admiral and works its way down, however if they are successful at a challenge that person can retaliate right away (but no safe pay) this way people can get more than one turn per round, so the Lord Admiral may not be the highest earner. The Lord Admiral when he challenges rolls of with the Admiral, if he loses he goes to the last spot, brig rat... when this happens it is fun to yell out mutiny and all advance a spot, the Lord Admiral must challenge at least one every 3 or 5 rounds(situational as with the gamble rounds) (OPTIONAL) You can also buy out the person above you, you offer them money they can accept or decline with no retaliation (this happens at the end of the round.) The roll off dynamic makes the table interact like no other game I have seen before, it can be fast passed or slow and often you find the volume of the group rising. Laughing (swearing) and all the alike come out from those with a competitive streak, and those who have no talent can win due to the luck of a roll. Those from mystery castle have had a one sided glimpse with the dueling for Mary, I have been working on this for a while now, so let me know what you think and any suggestions are welcome. feel free to use the pictures above and test it out. Or if you like as I did before, play it using normal playing cards a pen and paper! (so far best tactic has been, LA (lord admiral) offered to be bought out all the way to brig rat, then stayed there and quadrupled up! a big risk!) Pay per Character or Challange pay LA $35 or $55 Ad $30 or $50 Co $25 or $45 Cp $20 or $40 Cm $18 or $36 Lt $15 or $30 MS $12 or $24 Of $8 or $16 DH $5 or $10 BR $3 or $6 Proper instructions available soon! I Scream Clone Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Mind you, in hindsight, the dueling in MC certainly favoured all the traitors! If im not mistaken it ended up being you and IS dueling for Mary, man I should have realised then and there who the traitors were Game structure sounds good with advancement up the ranks. Ill have to invite you down to Wollongong one day to test it.

Ill have to invite you down to Wollongong one day to test it. Well I live in Adelaide so it might be a little bit of a drive Regards Cpt. PB

Admiral Blockbeard Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) Time for an update. I have been working on the board game all day today. I have finished painting my box and have written on the cards. The front cover had already been designed, needs to be printed. I have used cardboard from, wait for it... cereal boxes as the card support, gluing on the print offs. Here are the cards with writing, I feel they are bland/ empty and need something to fill in the space, ideas any one? I have made all the card backs it is now just up to sticking on the fronts after they are printed. After that all I need to do is write up the good copy of the instructions and wait for a perfect time to test! I should have photo's up later today or tomorrow of the board game complete and finished... Regards, Cpt. PB Edited January 9, 2009 by Cpt. Pegleg Blockbeard
Dragonator Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 You've got a spelling mistake on the Lord Admiral card. Looking forward to seeing the board, perhaps then I won't be quite so confused as to how to play. Looking good so far.
Admiral Blockbeard Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) Oh now that is annoying... they all do... I copy pasted... blast... anything else FIXED Edited January 9, 2009 by Cpt. Pegleg Blockbeard
Sandy Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Ooh, how exciting to see someone else planning a LEGO board game as well! Your looks very functional, and something that could be sold in a boardgame store. In my opinion it would be better if those pictures in the cards were actual photographs of minifigs, though. I'm currently planning a board game as well, although it's more of an alternate version of BrickQuest. It's made completely of LEGO bricks (excluding the rules sheet, of course) and it features a band of fantasy warriors venturing into dungeons and such. I simplified the rules of BrickQuest and added quite a lot of my own features. But I'll post it here once it's finished and test-played (with my boyfriend).
Admiral Blockbeard Posted January 10, 2009 Author Posted January 10, 2009 These are the updates rules... Starting; The players roll off to see what position they start in, the highest roll starts at the highest level working down to Level 1. If a draw occurs then a roll off is needed, the winner gets the higher Level. Eg. 10 people are playing; the rolls of the people are as follows 6, 5, 4, 4, 4, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1 The person who rolled the 6 is now a level 10 (Lord Admiral) the 5 is Level 9, the people rolling 4s reroll, and the result is as follows 5, 3, 3. So the 5 becomes level 8 and the 3s roll of for levels 7 and 6. This goes on till everybody has a level. Once the levels are decided the players sit in that order and collect the relevant card and figure and place it in front of them. These are not “owned” by the players chances are they will move with in the first round. Each player requires a dice. Rules; Depending on what level you are you get paid x amount of money. However if you choose to gamble a little you can earn extra money. The amounts are as follows; Level 10 - $35 or $55 Level 9 - $30 or $50 Level 8 - $25 or $45 Level 7 - $20 or $40 Level 6 - $18 or $36 Level 5 - $15 or $30 Level 4 - $12 or $24 Level 3 - $8 or $16 Level 2 - $5 or $10 Level 1 - $3 or $6 There are two options the players have are to get paid or challenge rank, (duel). If they challenge (roll dice against each other) and win you get twice the amount or $20 more, as above, (depending on your rank). This Gamble comes with a price; if you challenge and lose, you get no pay this round. With the exception of level 10 who if they lose get no pay and go down to level 1. When this happens the players call out mutiny and move up one level. If a player was challenged and lost they take the place of the challenger and may immediately challenge back or choose to get safe pay. Thus if they keep challenging, they continue to swap and get payed, for fairness this is limited to 5 swaps. A round starts when Level 10 makes their choice and finishes when the brig rat has concluded their turn. Due to the rules however some players may have more than one opportunity to challenge. The Lord Admiral must challenge at least one every 3 or 5 rounds depending on the amount of players (see below). However a twist occurs after 3 (6 or more players) or 5 (5 or less players) complete rounds, where people can bid blocks of $50 to double up on a 5 or 6, or if the person has less than $100 total, triple up on a 6, anything else they lose the money. This is where the brig rat comes into play, he can bid any amount, he doubles on a 5 quadruples on a 6, and only looses half if he roles a 3. However any other number and the player will lose all that they bided just like the other levels. You can also buy out the person above you, you offer them money they can accept or decline with no retaliation, or you can offer to be bought out by any player for an amount (this happens at the end of the round.)
Dragonator Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Looks great! I have one question though, what exactly is the aim of the game, and how do you win? OK, that was sort of two questions, but still.

Hinckley Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 This game confuses me... If you want to understand it why don't you ask a specific question to clarify? Otherwise, this comment is a little bit rude...
Admiral Blockbeard Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 Okay... so now that I have read my own instructions out aloud to a group of people I realized it was not a university essay... Came back here and realized the same thing... So attached is my revisited instructions in word (2003, i think) minus the KB heavy pictures Regards Cpt. PB...
