Pirate Princesses: A New Pirates Subtheme

Alice (I seriously doubt that's her real name) and I were discussing Pirates and Paradisa and other interesting themes when she came to a decision. She wants a pirate ship. Now one might think, "well, that's no problem, there are lots to choose from," but she isn't your average girl and she doesn't come to average decisions. Oh no.

So, after a bit of research, she decided that she wants a real historical ship, with a real historical Captain. A decidedly female Captain.

One thing led to another, and honestly, I love the idea, so I suggested recreating a variety of female Pirates in LEGO form. Some will require custom torsos, some are in skirts, others are simply a matter of using the right stock parts. Additionally, I plan to offer custom flags and other details as appropriate.

Today, I bring you the first of these "Pirate Princesses" (a term coined by a website that came up during the initial research phase of the project).

I should add that this will cover a larger base of operations than the traditional Pirate line, as evidenced by our first selection, a notorious Irish Pirate by the name of Grace O'Malley. Why was she first? I found the absolute perfect head for her and the rest could be done with stock parts. She's purist in every way, except for her flag decal.

As with most people, her clothing varied from day to day, so it would be easy to represent her in a number of ways. As it is, the traditional female pirate torso matched some known images, though I may do a cross between the present one and the standard castle equivalent at some point to more closely resemble the one shown in the source pic below. I have a feeling, from what I've seen so far, that the style was quite popular amongst our ladies of the sea.

And her flag (ok, I don't think it's real, but it's certainly in a style that was used, and has some interesting elements that could easily fit in). Created for a 2x2 flag. There is no record of a larger one to work from, but if you know of one, please post accordingly. Same with her family crest. I can't seem to pinpoint a really good shot of it.

Both my standard "jagged" form, and an antialiased one. Honestly, I bet the jagged prints better, but I aim to please.

So, there you have it, the first in what should be a long line of female Pirate Captains from around the world.
