[Anthology]-Small-A Disarming Approach

Tired of the high expectations of him to be strong in the light side of the Force, Ben Solo runs away after betraying his uncle, Luke Skywalker. Trying to escape from a Resistance base, Ben is pursued by 2 Resistance soldiers. Protocol droid C-3PO musters his courage and steps in front of the fleeing Ben Solo to try to stop him. Ben sees the droid, and swings his lightsaber at 3PO's head, but misses and cuts off his left arm. In to much of a hurry to finish the job, Ben runs out of the base and into the jungle, leaving behind a dazed C-3PO.

Not, however, the official backstory which is covered in Marvel's C-3PO one-shot (where it's the arm of a First Order droid who sacrificed himself to save 3PO so 3PO could deliver the important information related to Admiral Ackbar's imprisonment by the First Order)
