USS Constitution: a work in progress

How do you do that? Do you take an estimate of how many pieces you are going to need every time you order your bricks or is it more on a hunch?

The reason i'm asking is because this method could spread the cost of my minifig scale frigate over a long period of time making it much easier to handle offcourse :-P

I always start with the bricks i have and then order what i need, mostly small estimated orders from 10 to 50 euro's. Very handy and low cost, you order megablocks you progress.

Do you have any update pictures yet Phred?

Pretty much the same method as Captain Green Hair *y*

My cost estimate is just an estimate, and may be higher, depending on how detailed i want to be :-$

I definitely would only buy multiple small orders for your frigate.

First i'd try to build a portion of the ship that you may have bricks for (even in the wrong color)

and order what you feel you may need to get the right colors of bricks and continue construction.

Then as you build your frigate, you'll make improvements of your original design on the way and may decide to do a major (or minor) design changes.

Like my gun ports.

I recommend starting at the stern or bow and the bottom up as Captain green hair does :-)

I've gotten pretty far on the bow so far. have to make more of the gundeck to start on the spar deck.

Since i've gotten a real good idea as to how i'd like to make the ship below the gundeck, i can build at the water line up now X-D

Here's a pic of my wife's new mini-fig:

She wanted a MF with a top-hat, so this was the coolest torso i could find to go with one.

I think this guy looks awesome *y*

Sorry for the blurry pics :'-(

Now i've got to get A LOT of 1x2 and 1x1 black tiles.

Hopefully Z will let me have some if has extras :-D

Extras? Who said I have EXTRAS? I don't even know what the word means!

I do like the masts. It is difficult building round things in Lego. I wonder if they are a bit too thin though. I guess I shouldn't talk as the ones on the Phantom and Leviathan are probably too big, but I was thinking they might be a little thin given how tall they are going to be!

You've got to have extras all over the exterior of both of your ships :-P

I guess i'll just have to order some from BL then. |-/

Unless i'm in Minnesota, then i'll just come over and take them X-D

Thanx Z

According to the plans in the book i'm using, my masts are actually a little big :-/

I'm hoping it'll look better when i place the masts on the ship. |-/

I always start bij laying out the waterline in bricks, so i have an idea of what the proportions should be.

That bow looks great, really smooth! But shouldn't it be a bit higher below the gundeck?

I hope your wife doesn't run off with him :-P

well i always start at the waterline and build my way up.

Unless offcourse if i were to build an entire ship then i would just start at the keel and work my way up.

I always start at the bow because i think it is the hardest part of the ship to do.

The stern is quite easy in my opinion :-P

Offcourse LDD is something intirely different than actually building a real lego ship though :-P

Looks good so far :-) Hope you don't rush the project, best to take your time and finish it propperly

i'll try not to rush it (much X-D )

Yes it should, about one or 2 more bricks down to be precise. ;-)

I can always add another brick layer or two down later when i decide how i'm going to connect the portion that's under the water :-$

Phredit:

Gotten further on the constitution till i realized i needed a way for all the cannons on the gundeck to be tied to the wall |-/

Made a BL order already for a bunch of these: 2921.gif

Here's a pic of a cannon quickly tied to the wall:

And here's one that i was originally going to have:

Here're some progress pics of the whole ship so far:

Here's a pic with the "old" version of my gunports (which is ready to be dismantled X-D ):

If so, I'd love to see it,

Well there hasn't been much progress. |-/

I've been a little sidetracked and i've had to return my constitution book to the library

and forgot to order another one from interlibrary loan :hmpf:

Well anywayz here be some pics:

prog_bow7.png

I got 2 white 16 long 3 mm rigid poles for the bow. :-)

Just need 2 more that are 12 or 13 long. Not a very common brick AT ALL |-/

prog_gundeckinterior4.png

Most of the bricks used to tie the cannons by the gun ports have been placed *y*

prog_portside2.png

The poles that "help hold the rigging down" have been placed along where the foremast rigging goes.

These poles are really just for display to make this ship look more accurate ;-)

prog_portbow1.png

And an overview of the whole ship so far. X-D

Howz dat fer progress? :-P

It's amazing how big this ship is.

Now only is it big, it's also very good looking.

But I think it will take some time to get everything ready...

I haven't looked at this before and I have to say so far it's pretty stunning. *wub* The capstan looks great and that mast height is impressive. Are you planning on making it in sections? It's going to be big! 8-

Eh, Mr. Ruben Are you ok? 8-|

I've got one word for you guys

EXAMS

yep they suck! And still not done

btw, a mighty fine looking ship you got there. I've noticed a lot of resemblance between Errorist's ship and yours. Though perhaps that has more to do with sailing ship anatomy than any other explanation I can conjure up at the moment.

Perhaps mr Phred and Errorist should get together to build a first rate ship of the line? :-) X-D

Hey i've got those too

Yup, they suck |-/

I'd like to finish this ship first *y* X-D

I would like to make a ship-of-the-line eventually,

but i was thinking of a British 74-gun.

i'd really like to build the HMS Sophia next (Captain Jack Aubrey's first command :-) )

The Constitution was considered a super frigate back in the day.

It had ship-of-the-line rugged construction with frigate speed. *y*

If you compare dimensions of the Constitution with the HMS Victory (a first rate ship-of-the-line) on Wikipedia, the Victory's beam is only 2 m wider, and is only 7.3 m longer than the Constitution.

The constitution is pretty close to the same size as 74-gun ship X-D

It would seem that the typical American affinity for "big" can be traced back all the way to the founding of that country. Big sure means positive over there X-D

I'd still prefer the Surprise over the Constitution. ;-)
