Warship Excalibur under construction

Recommended Posts

I'm using Corel Paint Shop Pro X to try small differences in the color scheme.

Very useful and its a lot faster than changing the bricks.

From the 3 pictures in my previous post, the 2nd is the original. Nr 1 and 3 are changed with PSP.

After seeing the result, I changed the actual colours according to picture nr 1.

I like the ship in the first picture the best. I think the stern looks way too square, you should try to use some 1 x 3 slopes...

You are right about the stern being too square. I made some modifications according to your recommendation.

What do you think about this? Let me know if you have any thoughts Mr. Tiber. Your ideas are much appreciated.

I plan to replace the lowest 1x3 slope with a red version (already ordered some, since I don't have them).

However, I made a quick adaptation to show the result:

I have been making some more changes on the stern and it starting to look better now...

What do you guys think about the color of the gun-ports?

I'm starting to think that it would be better if they were black in stead of red.

I'd keep the tumblehome on the gun deck all the way p the side of the ship, or make the tumble home taller by making another gun deck

Not really, I see there are only guns on the mid sections of your ship, but you can also use the space on the bow and stern sections(although stern looks a bit difficult on your ship) I also did that on the Acheron...

...

Bonaparte,

I suggest trying Mr. Tiber's suggestion before adding another hull section. The way it looks right now you could move some ports to the bow and maybe have a couple of runners (edit: i.e. chasers on the bow i think) too.

Could try 2x3 wedges to ease the transition of the gun ports going one stud inward in the bow and stern.

They're 3 studs long too, just the length you might need.

Some good suggestions Mr. Phred. I'm gonna search if I have these 2x3 wedges (still have many boxes with unsorted bricks) or I will buy some to do some experimenting

Can you explain me what runners are? Are these cannon that are positioned in the stern or bow of the ship and that are shooting to the front and the back (and not to the side)? I can't find any good info on wiki or google.

Tonight I plan to add some more cannons in the bow section. If I add 2 more guns, the Excalibur can be classified as a frigate, which sounds a lot better than sloop-of-war.

Well, I'm not sure what runners are, but the cannons on the stern and bow are called chasers...(correct me if I'm wrong)

Thats a grand total of 22 guns eh? I believe a ship with 22 guns is a corvette... Also sounds alot better than sloop-of-war to me! :-P

I have heard the term "chasers" before, so you're probably right. So we still don't know what "runners" are...

I'm using the royal navy ranking system to classify ships. I like this ranking system a lot because it classifies the Excalibur a 6th rate frigate :) .

Is this a royal navy ship then?

If it were a Corvette, wouldn't it have to be a french vessel then?

I haven't decided yet. I guess the colors would suggest that it's a French ship.

But maybe it was captured by the English :-D

Thats what I like about Lego, everything is possible...

I believe British ships of the line have a totally different colour scheme...

A typical British ship during the napoleonic wars would be yellow/black and a French red/black.

....and a French red/black.

Are you sure?

Le Redoutable (Ship with the French flag)

But on the last pic, I do see a Spanish ship with the red/black colour scheme...(on the right)

You're maybe right. French ships might have had other color schemes than red/black.

But back on-topic :-D :

With all the discussions on 2 or 3 studs between the guns and frigate or not, I decided to do some changes:

- Added 1 hull section, so now there are 6 mid-sections.

- Three studs in stead of 2 between the cannons.

- Added 1 canon on each side, so there is a total of 20 cannons on the gundeck.

- You can also notice some changes on the stern (fence).

And this is how is looks after the modifications:

And this is a picture before the modifications:

Wow, the ship looks alot better now! The extra mid sections and 3 studs make it look a lot sleeker... I especially like the stern, the fence looks good. Can you take more pictures please?

Indeed, it does look much better now!

An extra mid-section and 3 studs between the guns make a big difference.

I just finished the other side of the hull.

Once my bricklink order arrives (was shipped today from England) I can complete the hull and I will post some good pictures of the finished hull.

Yes, I think three is the minimum distance, but 4 works for me too. In my last ship some were 3 apart, some where 4 so I have used both, even on one ship! 2 gets a little tight, especially when the wheels are touching!
