Freekysch Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) Review: 42027 Desert Racer Name: Desert Racer Set Number: 42027 Pieces: 148 Price: $19.99, £17.99, €19.99 Ages: 7-14 Year of Release: 2014 Hello Eurobricks community and welcome to my new review on a cute and little set. This month was my birthday and someone special got me 42027 Desert Racer set (if you ever read this review thank you very much for this). I want to say only one thing, although i am a BIG fan of Technic line i have never had a set with a Pull-Back motor, so i didn't know what to expect. Box Nothing special here, just a small box with some nice graphic art on it. You can see clearly that it has a Pull-Back motor because they advertise it on the box. The first thing that struck me was the green lime color of the actual set. Pretty nice ! The back of the box is showing us that there is no alternative model for this set BUT you can combine this set with 42026 to make a bigger set. There are no instructions provided in either set to do that, but as you can see, the instructions are downloadable from Lego.com. In my opinion the model that results form combining 42027 and 42026 is ugly and i really do not understand you somebody would built that set, but, well, that's just me. The sides of the box are clean and simple. Here you can see the 1:1 image where they put the wheel so you can approximate how big the final set will be. Also, in the corner they advertise the Pull-Back feature. Opening the box This is the part that i like the most. The smell of fresh Lego . As you can imagine, there aren't so many pieces in the box because the set only has 148 pieces, but in my opinion it comes with a lot of goodies. First of all, there are 2 bags, 1 pull-back motor, 1 sticker sheet and a manual. The odd thing was that 2 of the wheels were inside the first bag with other pieces and 2 others were free in the box (??). Oh well, that didn't bother me so i moved on. Here you can see a picture with all the box content. And the instruction manual. It is rather small but the instructions are very clear. I did not notice any mistake so it is all good here. The pieces The part assortment is nice, i really like the green lime color. You get a decent amount of panels, beams, connector and pins. You also get some new pieces (or new to me?), and a winch with some string. Because i am not that good at this part, i will let the pictures talk for themselves. The first bag of parts. The second one. The build As you can imagine, the build process is super easy, i finished the model in 30 min and took the pictures in the same time. The steps are easy, there is no problem distinguishing the colors from the manual, all in all it was a relaxing build. Completed model After 30 minutes of intense building, you have in front of you a little green mean buggy. I really thing the modes is cute, and the Pull-back motor gives it a nice function. I am the kind of AFOL that only displays models so i won't really play with it, but still, the fact it has a function is ok. The one thing i do not like about it, is the fact is has no steering. The models is as big as 9392 Quad. So, lets see some photos of it finished. The other thing that i would have likes, was suspension. Yeah, i know it is a little set but at the selling price i think they could have squeezed in at least front suspension. After the build some extra pieces are left. Here they are ! Conclusion All in all, this is a nice little set, i really love the color and the fact that the designer of the set included some nice details on it: hood scoop, winch, exhaust pipes, roof lights. This is clearly a model for those who want a pull-back motor because, lets be hones, the price is a little steep for the piece count. Design: 7/10 - The desing is really nice and the colors are lovely ! Parts: 6/10 - The parts are ok, but nothing great. Price: 5/10 - This is the bad part of the set, because the pull-back motor pulls up the price. Playability: 8/10 - This is the part where the set shines, i must say the pull-back motor has some power and it is pretty fun to play with. Should you buy this set ? Yes, but only if you want a pull-back motor or you really like the design ! PS: Thank you for reading my review and if you have any thought on how to improve my skills, please let me know ! Ecclesiastes Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Fixed! Nice review, one suggestion though. Try to not use the flash, use lamps instead. It's a small investment with great results. Quote
JGW3000 Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Nice review, makes me want to get this for my kids. The worm gear is an extra part? Did it come with two? Is the worm gear for the combined B-model? Quote
Freekysch Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 Yes, the worm gear is extra and it came with juat one. You might be right, it is for the B model. Quote
Anathaema Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 The worm gear îs for the B model and 42026 also comes with one. I have both andi built the B model, out of the three, the 42026 îs the best looking ! Quote
