  1. BUILDING INSTRUCTIONS There be a new 5th rate frigate found in these waters. She be called the Fer Maiden, pierced for 36 guns. She's armed with 18 long guns on her upper (gun) deck with a further 14 carronades on her weather decks. 2 long gun bow chasers and 2 larger carronades on her stern complete her firepower. She's built at Theme-scale: a slick, fast hunter that can protect merchants ... or hunt and take prizes. In this build she is flying the black, but every smart pirate knows that a letter of marque from a faction's admiralty is worth more than pieces of eight. A "chest" of alternate flags would be a great compliment. Features: a working capstan to weigh anchor, a stove to feed her crew, a furnished cabin for her captain, standing and running rigging with yards that rotate to accurately portray various sailing profiles, and removable foc'sle and quarter decks to allow access to her gun deck and interior. This is designed and built using real parts first before I made it digital in Stud.io and uses 100% legal build techniques and pieces. Now, keep that prize 2 points off our larboard bow on a broad reach, throw all sheets to the wind and let her eat. Build details: this started as an evolution from my earlier Barracuda frigate (21322 x2) but quickly became her own endeavor. I tried to nail the desired level of play vs realism, staying in theme scale and hull sections. My reasoning is that it can integrate nicer with peoples' official set collections if they choose. Because of that I decided to leave the molded shrouds off the mizzenmast, which allowed me to get the proportions of the sail plan "correct" whilst still allowing for full rotation of the yards and spanker. I fully realize some of the concessions and compromises I had to make but I like the result and challenge. Apologies for the lack of detail shots, I will add more when I assemble her crew. Full respect to you long-time MOC builders pioneering the space, and hopefully when viewing her with the theme-scale perspective you understand why I did certain things. One of which is only 4 mid sections, though her length is much closer to that of a 5-mid-frigate. I am currently building her modular lower hull so she can be displayed/played with a variety of ways - especially on an island beach getting careened, or perhaps in a yard getting her copper. (April Fools 2021 shenanigans) Pirates were mysteriously absent from the BrickLink Designer Program but we now have the reason... The LEGO Group will be releasing a new pirate ship named "The Firebird Frigate", complete with box art evoking the retro style of the classic sets.
  2. The Mardierian's remote fishing area is under attack! The Garvian privateer ship, a fast sailing topsail schooner has been on sea for several months, the crew was on the edge of mutiny, until they saw the white sails of a Mardiarian fishing boat on the horizon. The Mardierian boat was defenseless, sunking it was effortless. Unfortunately for the privateers, a Mardierian navy's sloop was patrolling nearby, a fight ensued. (Credit to Legostone for the bullet trajectory built with transparent studs) The reinforcement arrived just in time to prevent Garvian privateers from stealing the precious tuna! The poor dude is stuck in the middle of the fight. Full of militancy and royalist ardour, the Mardierian seamen deployed some WMDs, explosive and chain shot! The effect is very convincing. With their ship immobilized, the remaining privateers were forced to surrender. Some extra pictures of the ships: This entry is for Mardier. Thanks for viewing. Vive le Roi!

    Google street view!

Ok, here’s my news find for the week(s)? Not Lego news but definitely cool ship themed news. Pride of Baltimore II has a Google street view! So what? Well if you’ve not had the chance to tour the decks of a real tall ship and want to understand a little more about the relationships of all the different elements this is invaluable. It’s also a great insight into a schooner which herself is lovely example of both historic and working sail. I always say sailing replicas like “Pride” are a great reference for modelers, less for a sense oh “how things would have been done” but more for an idea of “how things work”. Now you can take a look all hours of the day and night from your own home. I know for me this is going to be a great source for my ongoing projects here out.
  4. HMS Enterprize seemed lonely, so I decided to construct a little playmate, the privateer Oliver Cromwell from Boston: Enterprize spent most of the US Revolutionary War patrolling the coasts and hunting for privateers, so this seemed like a good foil. The design I came up with is based on the model plans for "HMS Mediator" (a 1740s British coastal patrol cutter) which are widely available on the web, with an assist from the book Armed Virginia Sloop of 1768. I was also visually inspired by the USS Providence, of which there is a replica ship (currently in need of major repairs, sadly). It's a 10-gun topsail-cutter rigged ship, roughly in the style of a Bermuda cutter. A very simple and straightforward ship, although with beautiful rakish lines. There were a number of Continental 10-gun privateer cutters to choose from historically, and I thought Oliver Cromwell had the most interesting name. From tip-to-tip the Oliver Cromwell is 37 inches long, 27 inches high and 13 inches wide. But a whole lot of that is bowsprit. As you can see it is vastly smaller than Enterprise (probably about 1/7 the tonnage and broadside weight). But it does pack on a lot of sail for its size! I hope you like it. 5. 174C Well my 79008 Pirate ship was sailing alongside the IFS, BSB & QAR. Needless to say she was the silliest of them all without cannons. So it was time for a mod! Hereby I present you the 17 gun Corsair "Flying Arrow" Details: 12 side cannons 2 front cannons (chasers) 1 back cannon (defender) & 2 upper deck mini cannons It will be one of the ships I will use in the upcomming Brethren of the Brickseas! The Cpt. Matt Lenoir has the right to Privateer under the Eslandolian flag, permission granted by my upcomming main character, the governor of Stedor. So here is Cpt. Matt Lenoir: And the flag: C&C ofcourse welcome! note: to keep the atmosphere of the original ship, I did not touched the front and back :)
