  1. Hello everyone, this model of a Tower Crane is made only with 1166 pieces and controlled with either smart device or physical remote. In order to all functions of that model, you get a complete overview in this article how to build and how to control this crane. You can find instructions here if you're interested in building this model. Summary of Functions & Features remote controlled with PoweredUp 2-way-gearbox to select between functions motorized hook, trolley and 360° crane rotation Hub with batteries as counterweight modular building with extendable tower Minifigure scale to fit City layouts openable cabin 83cm superstructure length 70cm tower height Impressions Electronic components The crane uses the newest PoweredUp electronics to power all the functions. In order to remotely control this model, a physical remote pad is not mandatory because the crane is also controllable with optional smart device and PoweredUp app. Shaped with some system pieces, the PoweredUp 2-port hub with batteries included fits perfectly as counterweight and is easily replaceable. Simply turn on the hub by finger press and connect them to either PoweredUp app or physical remote to let the fun begin. The official set 76112 Batman RC Batmobile offers all electronic PoweredUp components they are needed to control this Tower Crane. Trains (60197, 60198, 60336, 60337) from the City theme are also nice and welcome starting packs for electronics, because they all include one PoweredUp hub and a physical remote pad, which then requires only 2 additional medium motors. Controlling the crane Heart of the design and probably the most interesting part building this model is the controllable gearbox behind the cabin. Where motor A controls the movement of the trolley, the functions of motor B are selected through gearbox. The following configurations are possible when playing with this crane and two motors together: Motor A - Motor B Trolley - Hook Trolley - neutral Trolley - 360° rotation For the crane it is very important to have a neutral position for rotating the superstructure. In case this function is unselected, the crane can freely rotate and prevent from falling. This is a feature that can be also seen on real Tower Cranes. All functions are secured with clutch gears to prevent damage. The winch for the hook has also a safety mechanism included. This holds the cargo even when the function is unselected. Controlling the crane is thinkable easy. In the PoweredUp app it just requires a profile with two slider - one for motor A and one for motor B. That means that this crane is controllable with a custom profile or even with the available one from Batmobile. Keep in mind that controlling the model does not require a smart device by using the physical remote pad. Building the crane Splitted in separately parts, building this Tower Crane feels like constructing the real thing. Official strings (part 37597, 56823) are used in this model that are widely used with many lengths in other Technic sets. Of course you can use any other strings you want. The crane uses a modular building style where each part of the tower fits to each other. The inventory includes all parts that are required to build exactly one middle section, but it is still possible to omit and to create a crane with a lower height of the tower. Furthermore the height of the tower can be extended by replicating a middle section stacked to each other. A higher tower then requires a longer string for the hook for sure. The following inventory shows only the parts they are needed to build one more middle section: Made with Minifigure The cabin can be opened to put a Minifure (without hair or hat) inside. Since this Tower Crane is made in Minifigure scale, it matches perfectly each layout with Trains or Construction vehicles also in the City theme. Instructions Premium instructions for this model consists of 283 pages with high quality images and building steps very close to the Lego Technic ones. The instructions helps alot on how to connect strings and wires correctly. Following are some example pages to show the quality of instructions: Goal with this model was to create a Tower Crane that is not that big and expensive and buildable for everyone. Tons of hours are spent to experience with balancing and stability. The end result is pretty neat, the crane works just perfect but dont expect too heavy loads on it.   2. Hi folks, I'm happy to share my latest creation to complete my 2022-lineup. With this model, the craziest journey is now over that I've ever had for an alternate build. This replica of a Ferrari F40 is purely built from Lego set 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 as an alternate model (B-model). Having the set 42143, all required parts will be donated and no additional parts are needed to build this F40. The model uses 23 spare parts from Daytona's large spares inventory, resulting in 3603 total parts for this MoC with 95% Daytona parts used. By opening and stabilizing the rear section, the engine and engine-bay can be revealed to watch inside this F40. The engine-bay is one of the most detailed part for an alternate model, with exhaust pipes completely made from the engine to the rear end. Even the crossbar from the back to the roof, that gives the real F40 more structure, has found a way into this model. The stabilizer-bar that keeps the rear section open can be stored safely under the rear without loosing them. Gearbox Welcome to my most realistic gearbox so far - the 5+R speed transmission gearbox inside the middle console of the car with a shifter layout very next to the original. For a full wheel spin, the engine fires 1.841 times in the first gear and only 0.663 times in the fifth gear. A higher selected gear results in less friction on the drivetrain and in lower moving pistons of the engine. Following is a summary of all gear ratios, measured from wheel (input) to engine shaft (output): Reverse - 1:1.767R 1. Gear - 1:1.841 2. Gear - 1:1.479 3. Gear - 1:1.104 4. Gear - 1:0.884 5. Gear - 1:0.663 Popup-headlights The model features iconic popup-headlights like the real F40 does, triggered by hand. Once the hood is open, the mechanism can be triggered to open and close the lights. This linkage mechanism is secured with a rubber band, holding the lights strong and in place. The following animation shows exactly how the popup-headlights works. Details The model uses most of the printed parts from its 42143 donor set, giving it the final touch and the instantly recognizable Ferrari brand. Doors of this F40 are implemented with a locking-mechanism. The doors snaps in automatically and stays in closed position. More features to mention are the iconic black stripes around the car, the air-intakes, the slightly angled shapes, the detailed interior with printed dashboard and the front lights, that are very detailed under the trans-clear parts. Instructions & building process The premium instructions for this model comes in 5 separate PDF-files with high quality images and building steps that are very close to the original Technic-instructions. The build can be quite challenging for inexperienced builders, but is for a 18+ set of course a satisfying experience for more practiced adults. Building this F40 starts on the 368 pages long main PDF with the ingenious 5+R speed transmission gearbox and the front axle to complete the front section of the chassis. The build continues with the second PDF and 136 pages later, the rear section is added to the front. After the marriage process with rear and front section, more parts are added to the chassis to make a solid structure, where every function works perfect at this point of the build. Iconic lines are more and more represented to give this model a real F40 experience. The third PDF takes over to complete the openable rear on 170 pages and added to the build. Some more details are added and the roof and windshield will be finished, getting closer to a real looking F40. On the fourth PDF, both doors are built and attached to the car 78 pages later. The F40 continues with the fifth and last PDF to build the hood on 185 pages with the triggering mechanism for the popup-headlights and then attached to the model. After 937 pages in total, the F40 alternate build is finished in all its glory. Comparison Final note With 95% Daytona parts used, this model pushes the limit of what is possible with a given inventory, offering builders a relative easy way to create this F40, where only the 42143 donor set is needed providing all the parts. I'm happy that I've finally managed the biggest brainfuck that I've ever had in my head with this model, resulting in the biggest model I've ever made and in one of the biggest alternate builds in history. Thanks to Uwe Wabra, my favourite designer, who makes this possible just with the Daytona. With several functions and authentic design-features very close to the original one, this model is not only a piece to display.   4. Greetings,LPub3D 2.0.14 is released. LPub3D is an Open Source WYSIWYG editing application for creating LEGO style digital building instructions. It uses the LDraw parts library, the most comprehensive library of digital Open Source LEGO parts available and reads the LDraw LDR and MPD model file formats. LPub3D is available for free under the GNU Public License v3 and works on the Windows Operating Systems. Portions of LPub3D are based on LPUB© 2007-2009 Kevin Clague, LeoCAD© 2015 Leonardo Zide.and additional third party components. LPub3D 2.0.14.838.2 Features and enhancements ------------ Fix: File reload after external source change breaks page drop-down combo dialogue(r837) * When a file is reloaded after being changed by an external source, the drop-down menu for selecting a page doesn't work until after navigating using another method. Fix: Image orientation does not conform when page orientation changed to Landscape (r836) * Image generation was not inheriting the proper page size values. Fix: Extra characters "%3" in margin meta and page size meta does not display the page size identifier(r835) * Oops, allocated the page size identifier variable to the wrong meta - should have been allocated to page size meta instead of units meta (units meta is used for setting the margin). Consequently, the page size meta is missing the size identifier (A4, Letter, etc...) because the place-holder to pass the variable is not there.   5. Greetings, LPub3D 2.0.13 is released. You can download from sourceforge.net or check for updates in your existing installation. Interesting fixes are the ability to switch part occurrence (times used) in the PLI between per step and per submodel on called out and submodel pages; the ability to insert one-to-many non-faded models (e.g. with alternate attachments/views etc...) when fade step is on; and new meta for pages size including the standard identifier - e.g. A4, Letter, Legal etc... and print/export performance improvements. LPub3D 2.0.13.834.2 Features and enhancements ------------ Fix: Logging options added to Preferences (r832) * Select logged attributes and logging levels. Fix: Prompt search directory settings reset (r831) * Prompt to inform that the search directories have been reset after the search directory reset button is clicked. Restarting LPub3D is not required. Also changed menu items "Reset 3D Viewer Model Cache" to "Change Temp File Cache" and "Reset Image and Model Caches" to "Reset All Caches". Fix: Inconsistency between part counts in submodels and part counts in call-outs where multiple instances are involved (r829) * For submodels, the PLI part counts reflect only one instance of the submodel, even if multiple instances are used in the same step. The instance count is correct, and the BOM has the correct total number of parts. With this update, sub-model pages displaying instance count now have a context menu option to display parts per step/page or not (total parts consumed by the number of instances indicated. Previously, for callouts, you have the options (see context menu) to display parts list per callout (one instance) or not. When you select no parts list per callout, the PLI will show all the parts consumed by the total number of instances in the callout. If you choose parts list per callout, the PLI is moved to the callout and only the parts for a single occurrence of the callout is shown. The idea here is if you have 5 occurrences of the called out assembly, you'll need 5x the parts total, but only 1x parts are shown to indicate what you need to build an instance of the called out assembly. On sub-model pages displaying the instance count, there is only one behaviour for PLI counts (the most intuitive) which is to display the parts list per step. This is intuitive because the primary role of the PLI is to show what you'll need to build an occurrence of the step shown - it is not the intention to mimic the BoM. Nevertheless, I added a context menu item to not display parts list per step and instead display total parts consumed by the number of occurrences of the submodel in the parent submodel/step. Fix: Page size and orientation processing update (r826/833) * Further industrialization of the print/export module. This update streamlines the process and realizes some performance gains. There are some key changes. Notably, page orientation and page size are now mutually exclusive. This means when switching from Portrait to Landscape, accompanying the orientation meta with a transposed page size meta no longer required or managed. Here is an illustration: Previous behaviour when editing a page size change required the following meta commands: 0 STEP 0 LPUB PAGE ORIENTATION LOCAL LANDSCAPE 0 LPUB PAGE SIZE LOCAL 11.0000 8.5000 Note that the page width and height have been transposed. Going forward, transposition of the page width and height when switching from Portrait to Landscape is automatically managed by LPub3D. NOTE: This update is NOT backward compatable. An accompanying transposed page size meta to indicate the switch from portrait to landscape as shown above will be treated as a new page size meta for that page. Consequently, using this meta to 'switch' orientation will actually result in NOT switching the orientation as LPub3D will automatically switch again the switched page size meta. If the user is only interested in changing the orientation, the proper meta command going forward will be: 0 STEP 0 LPUB PAGE ORIENTATION LOCAL LANDSCAPE To help with accurately displaying the page size identifier in the setup and context menus, the standard page identifier is now appended to the page size meta command. For example: 0 LPUB PAGE SIZE 8.5000 14.0000 Legal 0 LPUB PAGE SIZE LOCAL 8.5000 11.0000 Letter 0 LPUB PAGE SIZE LOCAL 5.8000 8.3000 A5 0 LPUB PAGE SIZE LOCAL 5.8678 8.3456 Custom Along with the width and height values, if the page size is non-standard, the identifier "Custom" will be automatically used. Additionally if an identifier is not present, the identifier "Custom" will automatically used. The page identifier is displayed in the Page Setup dialogue and Size/Orientation change context menu dialogue. Also, the LPub3D print/export function no longer needs to parse the model file to capture, in advance, page sizes. This capture is performed during the existing page parse and load functions and is exposed to the print routines during printing/exporting. This change was necessary to better enable mixed-size page export/printing where it is necessary to 'look ahead' to get the next page's size and orientation parameters in order to configure the printer engine before processing the page. Fix: Expand INSERT MODEL meta command behaviour (r825) * When using part fading LPUb3D will now process multiple INSERT MODEL commands rendering the CSI content at each command. For example, if the instruction document includes different model attachments, the editor can now include a non-faded image of the entire model with each attachment.
