Komatsu Forest layout in American style. I've built this layout last year. Built in minifig scale (1:45). Contains a Komatsu PC210LL-10 forestry excavator, PC240LL-10 log loader. Both of them have several functions from the real machines. The layout also contains a Peterbilt 389 Classic with custom Manac forestry trailer. For the C-model contest I figured I'd have a shot at doing something with 8049, as of all the sets I have in the parts range, this is one of the few with a useable number of the same wheel type (amongst other reasons). This is just a quick sketch built in LDD, a Logging Loader. Its functions are: Pneumatic lifting of the two-stage crane arm Worm screw operated claw Crane rotation via the light on the cabin roof Two-stage steering via the exhaust stack - this articulates the body of the vehicle while simultaneously steering a rack-and-pinion mechanism on the middle axle, so all three axles are at a different angle Pendular suspension on the rear axle Working with pneumatics in LDD is a bit of a pain, to put it lightly. I'm not sure about the positioning of those elements as yet on the crane arm, but adjusting them will be easy enough when I build it with bricks. It uses about 400 parts at a rough guess, the pneumatics parts here are made of multiple parts so distort the true part count.
More than month ago I've decided to begin building my biggest and most challenging alernative model so far. It will be forwarder (log loader) built out of set 8053 - Mobile Crane. The first issue was how to build complex crane with just one linear actuator and limited amount of gears. I've solved it by using worm gears instead of linear actuators and it works good. This is the first working prototype of rear part of forwarder: Then I've begun working on cab and this is the second version of it (you can aslo notice minor changes in crane): When I've showed it to my wife she told me that cab is too high and angular. What do you think about it? And last picture of forwarder ready to grab something: Few features and specifications: 4 axles with articulated steering working crane: rotation around vertical axis, lifting boom by wormgear, lifting stick by linear actuator, opening grapple by worm gear crane is operated from chassis (1 black axle connector and 2 red axle connectors) rotary seat in cab (not built yet) opening engine cover with fake engine (not built yet) target number of parts: 1000+ Few issues to solve: steering on smooth surfaces - wheels offer big resistance but it's OK on carpet overall design lack of useful parts Any comments and ideas for improvements are welcomed.
Hello everyone! Thanks for your informative and helpful comments on my recent post. More on 8295, though. Which is better - the A model (the Handler, obviously) or the B Model (log loader)? I've been looking at the plans for the B and I like the look of the model, but is it any good in actuality? I know the A has its problems, but how about the B? Is the steering better? Does it function better? Would love to hear some opinions before I disassemble a pretty hefty model and spend a few hours squinting at my laptop screen!
