  1. You could sail to any port in the seven seas and you'd find them... in alleyways, and taverns..., Always eager to help relieve lonely sailors of their tensions and sorrows. And money of course. But while many of these ladies of the night were impoverished commoners with little other choice, a select few worked for a greater organization. Drunk (and happy) men had loose tongues, and these painted ladies were always keeping their ears (amongst other things) open for the juiciest morsels of information. All of these went back to through a complex network to the one they called "The Mistress". No one knew what she really looked like under the mask, no one knew much about her, nor where she'd come from, but everyone knew that if you needed to find something out, she was the one who could help you - for a price. Anything from the painted ladies did not come cheap. It's been awhile since I've posted anything, life's been busy. Easing my way back into BoBs, and thought a figbarf was a good way to start. Thanks for organizing it Kwatchi and gang!
  2. "Why do you call them 'The Firebirds'?" "They seem to love birds, for some reason. And they surely love fire. These bastards." Captain Perret, his lieutenant France "the whore" (actually a whore), gunslinger Marco Gonzalo and the rest of the crew of "The Firebirds" are gaining power in Charlatan Bay. Right now they have stolen the treasure from a rivaling gang, the Dreaders. The Dreaders run a tavern, which is also their headquarter. Have run, one must say, for the Firebirds live up to their name and set the place on fire. But how did that happen? Pretty Franca had entered the tavern, and used her special skills to distract... well, no need to state the obvious. Meanwhile Ayden Doris had climbed in through the rear window and taken all the gold. Now the two are climbing down the balcony, while the rest of the crew is defending the streets and setting the tavern on fire. Not only have "The Dreaders" lost all their money and their headquarter, but also many of their men. They will need years to recover, while the FIrebirds keep rising. Captain Perret once was a proud and honourable member of the Oleander navy, responsible for a strong warship. That is until he was caught red-handed with the vice admirals daughter. He sat in prison, waiting for his sentence of death. It was there that he got to know his cellmate Hoggar, a Sea Rat from Charlatan Bay, who had just blown up a minor palace in town. "It's your lucky day, man", Hoggar had said. "Lucky? I am awaiting death, man. What's lucky about that?!", Perret had replied angrily. Hoggar had started laughing, and all he said was "wait till you meet my friends". When only hours lager Gunslinger Marco Gonzalo and Franca "the whore" came and opened Hoggars cell, Perret took his chance and fled to Charlatan Bay, where he joined the gang and due to his military skills worked his way up to being the leader within two years. Franca "the whore" was no more than a hooker. A hooker with a gun, but still. That was until she met Marco Gonzalo of Eslandola, who had just come to Charlatan Bay to start a new life. Not only did she fall in love with the old gunslinger, but also joined him on his quest to riches, glory and power. Marco Gonzalo, born in Terreli on the Eslandolan mainland, was one of the first to sail into the new world, and had worked as a mercenary for many years. Working for his own pockets, though, was more lucrative, so he decided to move to Charlatan Bay and become his own master. Marco has a strong feeling for honour. The brutal honour of a criminal, but still. In his youth Páco "the cruel" was a fisherman who fought sharks with nothing but a net and a spear. On one of their recent raids the firebirds burnt down his village. That was when Páco decided to switch sides. Now he just wants to kill people. He still carries his net, though. To catch people. Which he then can kill. Of course. Nobody knows his real name. That's why everyone calls him "the mechanic". His inventions would even make the scholars of Corrington proud, but he desires nothing less than than being part of a nation. His newest invention is an automatic "gun", which they just call "The Gun". He has mounted it to a cart, drawn by a pig (which he named Freddy - since then some people have suspected Freddy to be his real name). Scarface came too close to an explosion when he was a child. Not only did he lose his face, but also most of his sanity. Today the Mardierian runs around with a giant club and sabre. And kills people. "Pyro" really likes to burn stuff. Nothing else to say about that guy. James "Chef" Wilde was a chef for Her Majesty Queen Annetta's Royal Navy, before he decided that life was too short to serve others. He really likes to use his whip, by the way. Ayden Doris, 15 years old, is the only "born Sea Rat" of the crew. His mother, a whore, and his father, a pirate, are long dead. Ayden always had to find his way through life. His career as a burglar in Charlatan Bay is remarkable. He is the latest new member of the Firebirds. Hoggar, son of a miner, started his life working in the mines where his father had worked. He learned to handle dynamite, and assisted in forcing open new tunnels. He left the mining company, but took his knowledge to become a sellsword, blowing up warehouses, palaces and other establishments of one rich person by order of another rich person. He often felt that he was the only one who profited. In one of his last missions he had gotten to know Marco Gonzalo, who did not let Hoggar down when the latter got imprisoned in Oleon.
  3. Introducing Mr. Mandamento, the leader of the Mafia of Charlatan Bay by right of inheritance by blood and power. His commands are unquestioned in the gang and respected in the Mafia in the world at large. His second in command, Mr. Rossi, oversees all the day to day operations of the gang and their business dealings. Mr. Mandamento: Mr. Rossi, call a meeting of all the overseers of our enterprises. We will meet at exactly 2:37 pm tomorrow. In the morning, the entire crew had assembled. Mr. Mandamento (at 2:37 pm precisely): I am glad you could all make it here today. I wouldn't have wanted to need to permanently exclude any of you in the future. As you have noticed, there has been an influx in various criminal gangs in Charlatan Bay over the course of the last several months. At first, I ignored it because what harm could a few children and miscreants do. However, their early successes have caused them to be emboldened. They believe that they rule the city despite that all they have done is squeeze a measly few pennies from a few poor souls. It is time that we show them that they do not rule Charlatan Bay. Rather, it is the Mandamento family and all who serve them who are the real rulers of all enterprises above the law. It was just nine months ago, that we relocated to Charlatan Bay that we might expand our business into both the newly discovered world and maintain our control on the Old lands without interference of those pesky kings and priests and lords. Here we are protected from any criminal investigations and can spread our enterprises without hindrance. Now we will assert our dominance on Charlatan Bay's underworld and guarantee that no one dares cross us in the future. Mr. Moretti, our accountant and planner, has prepared assignments for each of you. They reference what gangs you should seek out and how much you should demand they pay us. Use each of your specialties and make them pay if they do not do so immediately. Mr. Moretti Luka (Specialty: collecting money from those of wealth who may have acquired it illegally. Skill: fencing and dueling - purportedly he has won 17 duels in his life.) Tiberio (Specialty: blackmailing women of wealth. Skill: Magic tricks and kidnapping.) Bruno (Specialty: forceful seizure. Skill: his massive size and strength lend to terror and his brute force does not dissuade from this emotion.) Dante (Specialty: Delivering terror on those most hardened in crime. Skill: Assassinations and threats of the same.) Riccardo (Specialty: Distraction of targets and relaxation of Mafia. Skill: Music.) Mercede (Specialty: Cooking and cleaning. Skill: no known, primary job as Mr. Mandamento's niece is to maintain their dwelling and keep their kitchen stocked. There is rumor among others that she has killed up to 13 men in her life. No evidence has ever been seen even among the Mafia, but she does keep that knife in her belt at all times.) Marco (Specialty: Being a pain. Skill: Being Mr. Mandamento's bumbling nephew and Mercede's younger brother.) Mr. Mandamento: Luka and Tiberio open the vault and provide whatever weapons the various crews need to complete their missions. Marco: What weapons should I take, uncle. I may need a pistol, but I have my knife and mace and... Mr. Mandamento: None! What are you doing here? Go with your sister and make sure the cleaning and cooking are done. The men will be hungry tonight. Then lightening his tone: One day, you may lead the Mandamento family, but for now you must learn the business one lesson at a time. Obedience is the lesson today. Marco left joyfully for he shall be the boss soon; his uncle said so. At least, that is what he heard.

    The Drifters

A miscellaneous gang held together mostly by the influence of their Captain, the Drifters take on anything and anyone. As their name indicates, they don't have much of a settled routine; members will disappear on their own little jobs, or go off in pairs, or get together for something big. Captain Bertram Kolde – A retired sea captain (some would say, a retired pirate), Captain Bertram is just about the fiercest of the fierce. His dominating personality keeps the gang together; most of them are deathly afraid of him. It’s common knowledge that his early days were spent on the streets, and that his seafaring career began as a stowaway. But brutal as he unquestionably is, he’s got a soft spot; when he first met Gessica Carli, at that time a child of six, he became a father to her and had her educated at his own expense, taking special pains to undo the influence of Mister Carli and her slum home. Mariana – No one has ever managed to learn more about Mariana than what she chooses to tell. And that’s precious little; her name is Mariana, and she likes dark blue. Plus she’s a sheer genius when it comes to inventing devious schemes, and she almost always has her nose in a book. That’s about it. It’s questionable if anyone even knows what she would look like without her mask on, or what color her hair is. She acts as lieutenant to Captain Bertram, and is almost the only member of the band who isn’t at all afraid of him, the other exception being Gessica. Mister Carli – As boys, Carli and Bertram used to roam the streets together; but when Bertram went to sea, Carli got into the good graces of a tavern keeper and eventually succeeded him at the business. He’s been on the brink of ruin numerous times, however, but it was in Bertram’s interest to keep him afloat. Worthless and slovenly, he’s only been tolerated because his tavern provides a vague façade of respectability. Gessica Carli – The member of the band who isn’t really of the band, Gessica is supposedly Mister Carli’s daughter; but Mariana shrewdly suspects that isn’t quite the truth – to say the least. Gessica hates the lifestyle of crime the gang leads, and would have run away long ago, if it weren’t for gratitude to Captain Bertram, who educated her and has always protected her. Still, she associates as little as possible with everyone besides Captain Bertram and Mariana, taking a bare minimum of part in the various nefarious schemes always afoot. Ceasar Agustus Aelicolius – No one has a better opinion of Ceasar Agustus Aelicolius – Cease, as he’s often called – than he himself. Cease is chock sure that he’s just a fabulous guy; so cool, so talented, and soooo handsome. He’s sure Gessica is just dying over him, and often stays awake at night reveling over the supposition, though it could hardly be farther from the truth. And though he thinks he’s about the most valuable member of the team, Captain Bertram would call him the most insolent piece of braggart cowardice and laziness he’d ever laid eyes on since that time when he drove a penknife through a bloated old frog dancing a hornpipe on a broken fence post in fancied security. Serena Aelicolius, alias Vix – Serena’s nickname Vix is short for Vixen, and she’s well worthy of the epithet. A perfect fury when roused, she’s always ready to turn against anyone or anything – with only three exceptions; Captain Bertram and Mariana, both of whom terrify her, and her son Cease, who is the paragon of perfection in her very partial eyes. Unlike Cease, however, she’s not stupid enough to fail to perceive that Gessica hates Cease like poison, and as a direct consequence, Vix hates Gessica like poison. Usually she stands too much in awe of Captain Bertram to annoy her, however; but when he’s not around, the two have been known to come to blows. Thomson – By now, you’re probably wondering who it is that actually cuts the mustard around here. Well, this is the one. A thorough villain and highway robber, Thomson can bust open a safe, shoot down a coachman in cold blood, pick a pocket, and even palm off counterfeit coins in a pinch. Captain Bertram knows his value, and general gives him a double share of loot (without, of course, letting anyone else know). Thomson started life fairly wealthy, but soon gambled and drank it all away, which didn’t tend to improve his naturally sour temper. Moody and reserved, he’s generally ignored by the rest of the band and left to do the dirty work on his own. Well, this bit of figbarf was a nice break, had fun coming up with the backstories too! Hope you enjoyed and thanks for looking!
