    [MOC] Hoth Echo Base

Finally, my Hoth Echo Base diorama is done (currently being exhibited at Brickorea Convention 2018, 15~23 December in Pangyo, S. Korea). I'm a big fan of the original SW trilogy and my favorite one to watch is Ep.V. I love the look of the Echo Base and the Hoth Battle despite the boneheaded strategy put on by the Rebels (apparently hasn't improved through to Ep. VIII). (Photos updated 2018.12.21) This set focuses on the base itself and depicts the time just before the start of the Battle of Hoth. Dimensions: 160(W) x 256(L) Studs To me two of the most important features of the base are the cave entrance/exit (with heavy shield doors) and then the air/space craft bays. I've tried to replicate the shape of the cave and shield door dimensions as close to the studio model as possible. I figure the London studio just was not big enough the fully feature the original desiger's concept, and thus the makers had to squeeze everything into a modified set. Yes the cave entrance/exit is too small for the Millenium Falcon to fit through. That is why in the scene where the Falcon escapes Vader's troops, the Falcon actually shrinks in size via photographic trickery. I was just happy to stick with the actual studio set (and more economical). Although there are no real accurate maps of the base and the surrounding areas, I always figured the approach to the front of the base would be pretty well hidden by the mountainous terrain of Hoth (as Vader's shock troops are supposed to have blasted their way into the top or side of the base). Thus the front of my base is protected by relatively few troopers (as in the film) armed with some MK II Repeating Blasters. There are only a couple of DF.9 Anti-Infantry Turrets and a 1.4 FD P-Tower Anti-Vehicle Laser Cannon guarding the front (my original plan was to build the MOC in two parts: the base itself and a forward Echo Station). My DF.9 Anti-Infantry Turret design was initially featured in '[MOC] Hoth Generator Defense' with the LDD design link. https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/117121-moc-hoth-generator-defense/&page=2 [/img] My newest MK II Medium Repeating Blaster uses a black ice cream cone and a spanner wrench. Its LDD will be released in a series along with the rest (LEGO may have come up with a new receiver part for the Overwatch series which might work well). I thought of various places to put the Ion Cannon and finally settled here as I didn't want to fill that side with just lots of bricks :-) The Ion Cannon has an LED bulb embedded. You also see a Viper Probe Droid next to the Ion Cannon. The Probe Droid has lots of new design elements which LDD I'll be happy to share with you soon. A shield/power generator with four disks! Also you see a Rebel Combat Speeder in its AA role. You can find more information about the Combat Speeder below. https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/117938-moc-rebel-combat-speeder/ Han Solo returning from a recon mission. I think this is also a signature scene from the movie. Updated 2018.12.21. Now onto my command center. Updated 2018.12.21. There is that Toryn Farr whose popularity I can't quite follow. A little cramped 'Blue Room' but you have to work with what you have. Han Solo and General Rieekan having a discussion. Oh that stare! Your worshipfulness! <An acknowledgement here to Frank Diorio at dioramaworkshop.com for his wonderful command center and other decals which I've adopted here> Although a bit cramped, my command center seems to be quite close to the film set. Medical center which has been done to death. Han Solo: "Alright, don't lose your temper. I'll come right back and give you a hand." Chewbacca: "Grrrrrr!" Updated 2018.12.21. with Jerac's X-Wing Snowspeeder bays follow after actual design changes made to the studio where the base was filmed. Updated 2018.12.21. I thought the shadows over the X-Wings were the essential points. Updated 2018.12.21. You also see three GNK "Gonk" Power Droids to the right. They are really fun designs and I'll release the LDDs soon. Comparison photos. Obligatory mission briefing scene before the sortie. Updated 2018.12.21. Jerac's X-Wing is a perfect match ;-) https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/166523-moc-star-wars-the-x-wing-story/&tab=comments#comment-3017567 YSDWDY's T-47 Airspeeder (Snowspeeder) https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/138237-moc-incom-t-47-airspeeder-snowspeeder/ Also here's my service gantry model which looks good and definitely works.Updated 2018.12.21. One of two Treadwell droid models I know. This also has a nice LDD which I love. The Rebel Troop Carrier is featured in detail below. https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/117121-moc-hoth-generator-defense/&page=2 Miscellaneous: Singing in the Rain trooper. This base features some complex cave networks which cannot be fully shown. It wouldn't be pleasant trying to recover some parts dropped in there! Not the best angle, but this is how a probe droid should look. A 'blue milk' breaktime. Updated 2018.12.21. Updated 2018.12.21. One last shot. Updated 2018.12.21. Well, there you have it. This diorama set has been started in 2011 and finished only last week. That was one long project!! Hopefully now I can go on to something else - only what? ************************************************ <Photos updated 2018.12.21. with lots more goodies>
  2. Not one to start small for a few weeks now I've been working on flushing out the Echo Base Hanger display I want to build for my UCS Millennium Falcon. I've been planning this since the set was announced but couldn't really start till I had the set in hand to base everything off. It will be in a glass coffee table I'll be building to display it. The planned layout is currently 47.5" by 41.75" but I may go to 47.5" x 47.5". I'm going to use Stricklybricks 50x50 baseplates with one set getting trimmed down. I'm trying to be as accurate as possible and get all the little details I'm finding as I research that I haven't seen before. This will also display some of the rest of my collection so the ships inside will be a mix besides the Falcon. My 99 X-Wing and probably one of Cehnot's beauties and 4 different official speeder sets spanning the years. I'm using Migui94's Falcon as a placeholder as I work to confirm sizing in addition to the physical test layout I have set up. I see that last week Cehnot also started basically the same project with similar goals but he is going for the whole hanger while I only have room for some of it with size limitation. Can't wait to see his take shape and maybe collaborate on a few elements. I'm building in Stud.io first since I don't have the money to start buying all the bricks and figure it out by physical trial and error. So to get started with where I am at here is an over view of the layout. I have a lot of detailing to do on the walls but I've been waiting till I had the structural strength and sizing dialed in first as I kept tweaking. I originally had 2 full bays but they wouldn't hold an X-Wing so I widened it and also ended up raising them to fit the vents. This top down view with the yellow fence shows the 41" width. and the potential space if I expand to 47". I'm going to curve the wall behind the Falcon some more but I'm not going to go all the way around to keep the sides of the Falcon visible through the sides of the table. This front view of the bay shows the vents in the top of the bays. My current thought was stickers to detail the vents but i will probably revisit them to look ate a brick based option but scale is a limit here. The Cat Walk for the X-Wings is an item that has been done but lacking in detail. I used Enderman eye plates for the side detailing. The current support beam X cross braces are temporary. After much thinking and tinkering I decided to design and print custom pieces to go there. The 3L bar on top will be cut in half to finish the top rail on the ends. I do like Cehnot's top rail better though and may try to rework mine based on his. Some small detail builds I have are the (quite silly) Treadwell 1016 droid briefly seen twice (somehow it gets on top of the Falcon with treads...). I also have a fuel tanker cart seen between the Falcon and the X-Wing. The floor light took days to get the scale right and try to be easily lit from below. The plan it to get vinyl stickers for the sides to cover the trans-clear plates then put an LED under them trough a hole in the baseplate. Not shown here is that the front 1x2 plate is clear while the 2 under the slope grills are trans med blue to get the right light out the back. I have lots more to do but finally felt I had enough to start sharing. Any suggestions on how to improve something are welcome! I will also be overhauling the Falcon itself to be more ESB accurate. Haven't yet decided on adding an interior since it will be in a closed display. -JF140/Cody

    [MOC] Echo Base

Hi, I have been displayed my version of the Battle of Hoth at shows in Ireland over the last few years. It's mostly using models from sets, but each time I try to add some new custom details. For the latest incarnation, I've added the medical lab, complete with Luke thawing out... Echo Base Medical Lab by James Shields, on Flickr Echo Base Medical Lab by James Shields, on Flickr This shot shows the complete model: Echo Base Medical Lab by James Shields, on Flickr Here's a view from around the back. showing how it's held together: Echo Base Medical Lab by James Shields, on Flickr Here's the rebellion's newest recruit: Echo Base Medical Lab by James Shields, on Flickr The lighting is a set of 50 LED lights powered by 3 AA cells. It set me back €3 in my local discount store. In addition to the medical lab, here is the latest version of the command centre. I've tried to do this a couple of times, but never really felt I captured the atmosphere of the movie. I think there's still room for improvement, but I'm much happier with the latest version, below: Echo Base Command Centre by James Shields, on Flickr Echo Base Command Centre by James Shields, on Flickr Echo Base Command Centre by James Shields, on Flickr This is on display in Athy in Ireland tomorrow. I'll post photos of the whole display soon.

    [MOC] Battle on Hoth

My Battle on Hoth display from Brick Con today. Credit to various people, Gol for the AT-ST (who says they won't stand up properly, that one has been stood for 8 hours being wobbled all over!), Anio for the original AT-AT and Snowspeeder build (though I've completely rebuilt almost all of it I would have struggled without the originals to work from). I've been building it for around 5 months and in total have used around 30,000 bricks.
  5. This is my Echo base Moc done without any part of the official lego sets of the echo base. I tried to capture the essence of the scene with the small details that can be seen in the movie. 7. I'm finally ready to introduce a new, originally-designed speeder to you straight from the classic trilogy: --Rebel Troop Carrier-- Based on the speeder used by the Rebel Alliance at Echo Base on Hoth, this speeder isn't the most recognizable among Star Wars fans, but as a vehicle from the films, as well as being featured as a design element on the Hoth maps of Star Wars: Battlefront, it is still a valuable icon of our appreciation. To date, LEGO has only released one version of this speeder. Included as a supplement in their newest hoth set, 75098, it wasn't my favorite. To me, little-to-no detail was put into the build, as it was a very simple build and, surprisingly, much smaller than I'd previously hoped it be. Needless to say, I took it upon myself to create a much more, highly-detailed rendition of the speeder. Using namely the photos of the speeder from The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Battlefront, as well as inspiration from other LEGO customs designers, I think this speeder turned out great. The scale is perfect for this build. It includes spaces for 4 rebel troops and a driver, as well as 5 spots for easy blaster housing. The front of the model is a very sturdy assembly which houses the different lights seen on the original speeder. It's also built at an angle, just like the real thing. The most challenging aspect of this model was the rear side, as there is a LOT of detail to consider. In the end, I was able to synchronize detail and functionality/playability together, rather than have detail be the "sacrificial lamb: for functinality's sake. The center end opens up so there is more access from the rear side of the speeder for troop entrance. MOCpages Comments welcome. God bless.
  8. Hey guys, Now i finished my next MOC " Episode V - Echo Base". I love Hoth so much an after some years i must build a scene from the movie so good i can. X-Wing and snowspeer are from Lary Lars and Slaki. But now the photos watch all detail pics on my flickr stream https://www.flickr.com/photos/71475401@N07/albums, markus
  9. I always feel for the rebel ground troops in the Battle of Hoth. Hopelessly outgunned and vehicle-less, being served as cannon fodder for the AT-ATs. So I wanted to give them somewhat of a fighting chance. Hence, my MOC of Hoth Rebel Combat Speeder/Universal Carrier. This is the same vehicle featured in 8083 Rebel Trooper Battle Pack. The vehicle is dubbed "Rebel Combat Speeder" by TLG. But this model, which I once thought to be one of TLG's imaginary vehicles, actually existed as described in Star Wars Wikia as "laser ice-cutter". Source: http://starwars.wiki...aser_ice-cutter A 1980 ESB making documentary features the following. It has been suggested the vehicle was edited out becaue it rode too much like a 'snow mobile' rathe than a 'speeder'. A photo of the set shows the followng. Now, the vehicle can actually be seen in SW Ep.V as follows. Upon frame by frame analysis, I've found the following. IMO, the description that this vehicle's primary purpose is as an "ice-cutter" for the excavation of Echo Base is not correct. It is obviously a combat vehicle much like the Universal Carrier/Bren Gun Carrier or M16 Multiple Gun Carriage or FLAK halftrack. Hence, my design of that mystery rebel vehicle. .
  10. I enter the back entrance for a newly discovered branch of the abandoned Echo Base, in search of Rebel Alliance military intelligence and to destroy any remaining equipment... After blasting open the doors, I enter the darkness... Rebel blood drips... Hi everyone! This is not your classic hoth base, and its not really designed as a story... so I'll just present the photos with minimal commentary. Thanks for viewing! I was planning on putting some more things on the outside part, but I decided to just keep it simple with the landscape because I was running out of time... oops! The entrance to the base. On guard is a snowtrooper. Here is a clearer shot of the front, without the figure in front of the entrance. Without the roof. From the side ( no roof ) Aerial view of the layout of this small base. In the top left is one trooper finding some secret information to steal and on the bottom middle one trooper is finding some equipment to destroy! The rest of the base is filled with rubble and leaked snow. "Looks like we've got some material to download here, sir." It appears that the rebels didn't do so well... this must be the result of a wampa attack (tired of the mistreatment of taun-tauns, you see). Here's a view of the base from the other side. And to finish this up, a parting shot with the wampa snacks Thanks for viewing! Constructive criticism and pure praise appreciated
  11. My entry to the Shadows of Nar Eurbrikka : Episode III [ Oh Echo Base! Oh Echo Base! ] This holiday season was clearly a busy one. The Alliance organized a lot of missions, and we had no time to celebrate. As a recently promoted Alliance Intelligence member, I was sent to Hoth, an infamous freezing planet with the legendary Echo Base, to recover any useful information from the abandoned servers and destroy them; at the same time to recover the Princess ‘s wardrobe. Oh well, it’s Christmas after all, so why not have some relaxing and fun actions. ============================== After our arrival, the pilot had some free time decorating the Hanger. Rebel Trooper 1: Oh No! The Imperials are here! Rebel Trooper 2: Defend our Christmas tree! At the back of the Hanger, some troopers were trying to recover the equipment, which we left behind during our evacuation from last battle. Rebel Trooper 3: Be careful ! The base floor is quite unstable. I reached one of the control rooms with my partner. There, we found the Princess Leia’s secret changing room. With much effort, we override the system and opened that heavily secured door. As one of the female members of the Alliance, I always wish to see some of the Princess’s lovely dresses, and now I had the chance. All of the sudden, the Rebel Commander arrived. He insisted he had a secret mission inside that room and gave me strict order not to enter! He went straight in and locked the door behind him! WHAT! I was furious! But I cannot disobey the Commander. Duty comes first! And I continue to destroy the remaining servers. I wonder what he is doing in the Princess’s room (??????) Commander: Oh Look ! I 'm the Princess! I 'm FABULOUS ! ============================== Overview : Front : Back : Hope you like it
