1. Index Part I, Receiving the Letter Part II, Fleeing Nova Terelli --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Participant players: Bart Vessels: DMDR 6 Starting point: King’s Harbour just hours after the Great Ball. Main and recurring characters (as of chapter 1): Rodsh Derr, former Lieutenant of the Eslandonian Imperial Navy, captain of the Narwal. Cathy Derr, wife of Rodsh Derr, First mate / acting-captain of the Narwal. Jonathan Splicer, Skipper of the DMDR 6 (Derr Merchant Dispatch Runner no. 6) Crew of the DMDR 6 Gold: What Rodsh had in his pocket when he boarded the DMDR 6, about 50 db. Troops: None. Disclaimer: All my builds will be done in LDD (for the time being). < I intended for the next bit to be in a next post, but they got automatically marched > Part I, Receiving the Letter Rodsh and Cathy where on their way back to the Narwal1 after a very much enjoyed Ball, when they came across a disturbance on the jetty. I know that vessel Rodsh thought to him self while they just came within earshot. 1 recieving the letter. by Bart, on Flickr Soldier 1: .. I really hate horsemeat sausage too!…. Sailor: They are a pinnacle of evil, who would even think of eating a noble horse. King’s Harbour harbour master assistant (HMa): WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING! You can’t run past our inspection vessel! And just dock where ever you please! Eslandonian captain (EC): Yes I can. I’m carrying mail, can’t you see I’m flying a gold pennant.² HMa: I don’t care what flag you are flying, but every ship should allow the inspection vessel along side for an inspection! EC: but.. 1 recieving the letter 2 by Bart, on Flickr HMa: And WHY are you opening your hold! You aren’t cleared by customs yet, you aren’t allowed to load or unload anything, and your crew is to remain ONBOARD! EC: Just for ventilation sir. EC: First Mate fetch the cargo papers will you! Eslandonian First Mate (FM): Right away sir. 1 recieving the letter 3 by Bart, on Flickr EC: So, mister Harbour Master how do you propose to resolve this issue? HMa: You slip those moorings and sail out in to the bay! There you anchor and await inspection tomorrow morning! EC: I can’t do that sir, the tide is rising I’ll never get out of the bay. And I have rights, I’m carrying mail. 1 recieving the letter 4 by Bart, on Flickr Rodsh couldn’t help himself, he had to join this argument. His curiosity about the vessel had got the better of him. Rodsh: Mister harbour master, the fair captain is right. If he indeed is a mail carrier he has the right to dock instantly. The custom is to fly a gold pennant from the mast top to show this. And as you can see, she is flying such a pennant. FM: Here are the papers sir. EC: Check for yourself mister Harbour master, our cargo is mail. HMa; This is outrages, I’ve never heard of this! Rodsh: What is the docking rate for small ships this evening? The harbourmaster fell silent, as his mind jumped to conclusions. HMa: 10 quarter-doubloons sir! All there knew it was just 2. EC: First mate, pay the harbour master please. As the harbour master marched his marines off the jetty to waste the cash in the pub, the captain of the ship asked Rodsh: Sir, do you know if the Great Ball has already ended? I’m looking for someone whom may be among the guests. Rodsh: Yes we just came from the Ball ourselves. EC: Do you perhaps know if a lieutenant Derr was there? Rodsh: Yes he was there, he is standing on your deck now. EC: You are Lieutenant Rodsh Derr? Rodsh: It’s former lieutenant, to be honest. I’m captaining my own ship, the Narwal, now, she is moored at the end of this jetty. 1 recieving the letter 5 by Bart, on Flickr EC: I’ve got a letter for you. Rodsh handed the letter to Cathy, and after she read it he told her: Take the Narwal for the necessary careening and replace those leaky planks in her hull. Then take her to cousin Jacob in Nova Terrelli, await any news from me there. I’m going with skipper Splicer. Cathy: Why not take the Narwal? Rodsh: Because the DMDR 6 is much much faster than the Narwal, and she desperately needs the maintenance. You take her, you’ll captain her in my stead. Skipper can we take the next tide? EC (skipper Jonathan Splicer): I believe we can sir, I still have a man ashore but he should return before sunrise. Cathy: I thought no one was aloud off your ship? Splicer: He left before that rule was spoken. (Spoken on such a tone that Cathy knew not to ask more) Rodsh: Straight to Eslandonia? Splicer: I first have to dock in Nova Terelli. I picked up some messages along my search for you that need delivered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ note 1 The Narwal is the ship I’m building for Captain Rodsh, story wise that is the ship he’s been off to all those time. (You’ve already seen the cabin interior.) I just never build her. She is in progress though, you can see a sneak peek on flickr. So story wise I send her off careening for now, maybe she gets added to this story, or maybe not. note 2 The gold pennant is an invention of mine, I’ve no real world base for it. (Although there may be, but I didn’t look into it) I hope this answers the questions on why the DMDR 6 was racing across the sea’s the way I presented her :D Questions: How do I license or report this or do I not for an amrca? Does this work for the game masters or do they require something else to make a game from? Do the stat’s of the ships chosen when licensing come into play at an amrca btw? Is it even possible to add the Narwal later? I like to build her proper and not rush her, just to get this amrca started.
2. Name: Poppy Port Ownership: Sea Rats Location: Sabre Island Mayor: Rodsh Derr @Bart Settlement status: Hamlet founded 4 April 618 Town since 21 July 618 Who can own property in Poppy Port: Anyone. Who can freebuild in Poppy Port: Anyone. Description: The first settlement of Sabre-Island, the harbour may be tricky to reach due to rocky formations and reefs near and under the water surface, but a recent hydrographic survey has charted them carefully and has placed two markers to guide ships trough a save passage to the harbour. The harbour has ample supply of fresh water and is capable of receiving deep drafted vessels. Rumours have it that there are fortunes to be made on Sabre Island, and Poppy Port is it's open front door. Maps: Poppy Port, Sabre Island Approach to Poppy Port map Click for a bigger picture Island 2 Sabre Island by -Mike S-, on Flickr Builds: Licensed: Large Education - Hydrographic Exploring on Sabre island - Bart Medium Art & Culture - Mayor Office - Bart Large plantation - Black Poppies - Bart Medium Artisan - Mill - Bart Gold mine - Bart Fort Maartens - Kwatchi Unlicensed: Prospect - prospecting - Bart Poppy Port Defence Fleet - Bart Island information: Name: Sabre Island Nickname: The Hilt and the Blade Location: Just 60 nautical miles North West of Stéphanique (OL) the island being the border of the Cocovia Sea and the West Prio Sea. Geographical Features: Featuring blunt cliffs on several sides, the Hilt (the eastern-most Island in this chain) features a tall, dormant volcano. The Blade (The Westernmost Island) also features a more eroded dormant volcano on the east side, but gradually slides into the waves going west. The archipelago rests in the thick of a coral reef, whose unpredictable depth has already been the grounding of more than one large vessel. The Island itself is fertile and could grow sugar cane quite well. Rumours: A roguish band of ship scavengers has been operating out of "The Hilt", preying on the ships that wreck in the reef. Whether or not this is true remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Precious little remains of those ships that did ground in the waters surrounding "The Hilt and the Blade"
3. After the prospecting report came the Major of Poppy Port send out a letter to a tribe of mountain dwelling men who live in the home country of his wife, the are rather short compared to the average minifig, but they are the best in the buisness. The digging of the mine started in the location the first finds where made. Gold mine 1 by Bart, on Flickr The outside of the mountain didn't do justice to the work the men on the inside had done, and the fastness of the gold resources found. 4. James and dr. Anderson are continuing their exploration of the lands behind Poppy Port on Sabre Island, leaving the Mill behind following the stream feeding it up the mountain. Prospecting near Poppy Port by Bart, on Flickr dr. Anderson: This is an odd coloured rock, it appears to be an ore line running up and into the mountain face. James: What kind of stuff is it? dr. Anderson: I'm not sure, I'll have to send it to a friend of mine so he can do some research on it. --- OC, Which forms do I use for a prospecting build? Build submital and Propperty license?
5. 1st Platoon of the East Company - 1st Battalion Derr's Expeditionary Light Infantry . Inspection with Colours by Bart, on Flickr As @Bregir made clear, any fighting force requires a moc, and as already filled out some forms, here is the presentation. The 1st Platoon of the East Company is being inspected, after finishing their training. There is no bother with full uniforms, the only rule is to wear something of the Battalion colours, green in this case. From left to right: Colonel on a horse, battalion commander, green epaulettes, port-starboard bicorne hat with a big red plume Captain of Infantry, company commander, green epaulettes, fore-aft bicorne hat with small red plume Company runner, (taking messages to and from the colonel to the captain if the companies operate out of line of sight of the rest of the battalion) Company drummer, the only one for which the colonel saw fit to give a uniform jacket too. Lieutenant of Infantry, the platoon commander, with green epaulettes and a tricorne hat with a red plume The fighting men in the platoon, all armed with a good musket and a bajonet. The battalion colours, a green field with the red trident of Derr in the middle, flown from a black staff tipped with a red spear head. The SeaRat colours, identical staff. It is my intention to create the full nine platoons, so you'll see ninety different mini's when the full battalion end up in a fight.
6. I was assessing which bricks I have and what could be done, now I'm back to my real bricks. This scene emerged. Along the coast of Sabre Island just to the north of Poppy Port itself, the "Poppy Port Defence Fleet" was out in full force to train among the treacherous shallow waters with all the rocks and reefs. The newly appointed commander was drilling his rowers hard. - WHY for the holy brick are you anchored! The commander shouted to the Theta O. Barry wasn't really impressed by the 'commander' on board the Iota O. and explained that his boat mate wasn't aloud out by his wife, and with the current being to strong to row back he decided to anchor and fish. The commander knowing said wife wasn't about to argue, but after eyeing the amount of fish Barry had caught, he just shouted back "You are responsible for dinner tonight!" PS Maybe it's a bit obvious for some, but I named the boats after star names (same as the FTA Achernar) but with the Achernar it was a bit random choice, this time I was more thoughtful about it, Iota O. (blue boat) and Theta O. (brown boat) are two of the three stars in the Sword of Orion, I choice the sword because of Sabre Island.
7. To celebrate the fact that I Rodsh Derr have become a member of the Free Traders Association, I've build them a ship. I gave command to Captain Bennet, a former mate of mine for whom this is his first ship as a captain. I present the FTA Achernar The FTA Achernar has been specially designed to transport big rum barrels, her mainsail boom has been strenghtend so she can load and discharge the barrels herself in any port, and her hatches enlarged. --- On the mainmast you see the Sea-Rats colours On the mizzenmast you'll find the banner of the FTA and on the stern the personal flag of Rodsh Derr, which doesn't have to mean he is onboard though.
8. Even a starting settlement needs an office for the local clergy to oppress rule administrate from. I tried to keep the same feeling of the terrain as with my first build in Poppy Port but with your comments about needing more detailing on the terrain in my mind. The building is a simple wooden construction, with a canvas roof. As the port is still under development, there is no incoming trade yet and building materials are sourced locally. Poppy Port - Mayor Office by Bart, on Flickr Poppy Port - Mayor Office 2 by Bart, on Flickr Poppy Port - Mayor Office 3 by Bart, on Flickr The first ship with mail has found it's way into Poppy Port. Dr. Anderson! the office lady calls out, a letter for you!. Dr. Anderson was just about to join James at James Creek for some relaxed fishing.
9. Poppy Port – Sabre Island (zone 26) – Sea-Rats Hydrographic exploring Poppy port - Hydrographic exploring by Bart, on Flickr dr. Anderson: Well hurry up with those boxes will you James. James between his puffing: Yes, doctor. dr. Anderson: This looks like the ideal spot! Fresh water, flat beach, deep ocean waters near the coast, only some rocky patches that need attention. James I want the tent where you put those boxes. James: Urgh.. yes, doctor. dr. Anderson: Oh and I want to be on top of that hill before noon, which I reckon is in forty… six! minutes. Bring my gear James! James grunts as a response. Poppy Port - Hydrographic exploring 2 by Bart, on Flickr dr. Anderson: This will do, this will do just fine. James, we will build the first marker, point Alfa, right here! James knowing that ‘we’ meant ‘him’ in those words, was just happy he could’ve catched his breath will the doctor was doing his measurements. Poppy Port - Hydrographic exploring 3 by Bart, on Flickr James: What is this marker Alfa for doctor? dr. Anderson: For us to use as a point zero from where we will make all our measurements. James: Measurements? dr. Anderson: Yes we’ll go out in our boat, and make depth soundings at regular spacing, so we can draw up a map of this new harbour. James knowing that meant rowing, and rowing and more rowing didn’t really look forward to the idea. James: Why do we need a harbour here anyway doctor? dr. Anderson: Oh well there isn’t anybody here that could eavesdrop on us, but our contractor Mrs. Derr thinks there is a money to be made from commodities from this island. And to take those commodities off the island one needs ships, and ships need harbours. Poppy Port - Hydrographic exploring 4 by Bart, on Flickr dr Anderson: James if we put another marker right on this rock here, marker Alfa and this new one… James: Delta, doctor? dr. Anderson: Yes Delta sounds good. Well those two Alfa and Delta will form a line, indication a save passage through the rocks we charted, and ships can use them to enter this Harbour. James: So ‘we’ have to build another marker? dr. Anderson: Excellent idea James, if you can start getting the necessary tools and supplies. I’ll be there in a moment. James: Yeah sure. Poppy Port - Hydrographic exploring 5 by Bart, on Flickr So this is the build I want to start a new settlement ‘Poppy Port’ with, on Sabre Island (Sea Rats-zone 26). But how on earth do I license this? It’s a 48x48 base plate, but half of it is water (aka bare baseplate). Do I license the doctor and James their activities as hydrographic surveyors i.e. artisan or do I license the structures, marker Alfa and Delta as art’s and crafts (as they are the permanent builds) Or do people think this isn’t enough to start a settlement, then I’d like to hear that too. I know I know I could’ve build something easier to license, but I had this idea. And building out my ideas comes before wondering how it fits into the game, sorry. *if people think, why are those markers that big! Well you had to be able to see them from quit a distance, and then measure angles with the sextant to find out your position. I believe them to be accurate in size and appearance, in real life they would have been made of a light wood construction covered with linen painted black.
10. The barque Narwal, the ship of Captain Rodsh Derr: Barque Narwal 4 by Bart, on Flickr Barque Narwal by Bart, on Flickr Barque Narwal 2 by Bart, on Flickr Barque Narwal 3 by Bart, on Flickr A single deck frigate, with a barque rig. Armed with 12 cannons on the gun deck each side, the six centre guns are the big Lego pieces and the six on the fore and aft are smaller brick build. (I''m not really sure wat the common lore is fore the size of guns, were the Lego ones 32 pounds? and brick build 16, or was it 16 and 8?) And in addition to that six swivels on the stern and two swivels and two carronades on the forecastle. You see her here under the command of Cathy Derr, normally the first mate, as Rodsh is off on an adventure. The Narwal has just finished careening on a beach near King's Harbour and are no underway chasing a rumour Cathy picked up during the Ball. This ship grew out of the cabin I build as an approach to the Ball, I first intended to build only a side and use it as a decor in my AMRCA opening post, but it turned into a full ship by accident. Bart
11. Due to the increasing amount of ships being build, the demand for products from shipyards has risen, a new paint factory has started producing. The lasted batch of paint is ready for shipment, the coach (is it a coach for cargo too?) has just arrived. The red pigment is already running low! paint factory by Bart, on Flickr paint factory 2 by Bart, on Flickr paint factory 3 by Bart, on Flickr paint factory 4 by Bart, on Flickr paint factory 5 by Bart, on Flickr It started as a try out on a brick build rocky base. I'm happy with the result of the rock works and the contrast with the red brick above it. The roof was a challenge, I couldn't decide on what I liked, in the end I came up with this, which is supposed to represent slate. C&C most welcome.
12. (believe it or not, but this is the first finished ship I am presenten on EB) I present to you the DMDR 6, a small cutter rigged ship, used as a dispatch runner: I used MSPaint to show some stays as that isn't really feasible in LDD. For pictures with (or without) you can check my Flickr (link in the signature), also some WIP pictures there, if you are curious about the hull shape. (Not a full hull but it continuous a bit below the water. Principle dimensions: LOA 58 studs BOA 14 studs Hull length 41 studs Waterline 35 studs Mast height above deck (not counting the spar for the gaff tops'l) 42 studs If you have questions like, what is she doing here, where is she going, who owns her, what does DMDR stand for. They will be answered when she docks :) All C & C most welcome. Bart
