  1. Here is my review on 2024 LEGO Chinese New Year set 80112 Auspicious Dragon: THE GOOD: Absolutely look stunning! Captures everything you need from an Eastern Dragon. Great printing for the dragon scales. THE NOT SO GOOD: none, if I want to be harsh, it's probably the back of each foot expose a bit of the technic pins. This is an excellent display piece and may probably be one of the best brick built dragon ever. A refreshing building experience and managed to avoid the feeling to repetitive steps given you need to build both sides of the dragon. No stickers means only printed pieces and the qualify of the print does not disappoint. The dragon itself looks lively thanks to the great use of effect parts around the build and all the little details added to the dragon itself, for example, the spikes at the back of the dragon are great. The neck and mid torso of the dragon also looking great. This is a pure display piece, hence it does lack movement. The articulation points limited to the tail, head and jaw. Plus the right hand holding the blue crystal. These allows you to pose the dragon slightly differently, at the same time makes this a very sturdy build and you can even pick this set up by just picking up the mid area of the dragon body. The price ain't bad too and I totally recommend to everyone especially if you like brick built creatures. Now I wonder if LEGO will release the remaining zodiac sigh as a displayable brick built creature, not sure if it makes sense to have it though given the remaining signs are, Chicken, Horse, Snake, Sheep, Dog and monkey. anyway, really satisfied with the outcome of this set.
  2. Here is my review on the latest LEGO Chinese New Year set 80113 Family Reunion Celebration: THE GOOD: Looks stunning! It has more depth and height than you see in the pictures! Really capture the typical chinese restaurant look. I love the dim sum cart! Exciting ways to build the exterior. Very lively store front. Excellent selection of minifigures as usual. THE NOT SO GOOD: For a fully enclosed MOC, it will cost you some money =P A few decorated tiles could have been printed. The small stem for the pink flower doesn't connect well so the flower pops out easily when you about to put the flower stands in the corner. This probably be in the top 5 of my ranking on Chinese New Year set. I'm pretty sure this set has been designed as a full modular in mind. You can see how a fully enclosed would look while building it. The exterior looks absolutely stunning with various interesting new ways to create the oriental look. It also stand quite high and have much depth that you won't notice in the product images. In fact, this kinda like the Diagon Alley, even great to display without the other half. The store front is very lively. The interior also great, it really captures most of the essentials in a Chinese restaurant. From the counter, gold fish tank to the kitchen with a huge cutting board. Although the roast chicken is kinda big in scale =P. The dinning table is a nice call back to the first ever CNY set, and I believe it's the same family. Having a working lazy susan in smaller table is also great. With a unique stair case and somewhat clean but uncomfortable toilet seat, it;s nearly perfect. The minifigures are excellent too. I love the staff member with very realistic design of their torso. of course the dragon costume guy is good but I did wish he wears a red based outfit rather than a gold one. It will look awkard when you have all 12 lined up with some in red, and a few odd ones stand out. There aren't much to dislike about this set to be honest, the only slight improvement I can think of is probably some of the tiles could have been printed instead of sticker. One more thing though, the pink flower can be a bit lose and easily pops out when trying to put the flower shop into the corner of the store. While building a full modular MOC is tempting, this can be super expensive given buying 2 sets will leave you short in the green ingots unless you just want to mirror the same set up at the back. Having said that, this set already selling with 30% from KMART in New Zealand, tempted but I have other priorities. Anyway, this is definitely a set I would recommend. And now we have half of the zodiac signs, only 6 more to go but clearly LEGO is running out of ideas as the actual event celebrating CNY has been rehashed in this just a different settings. So I'm actually very curious on what may come out in the next 6 years on the sets in minifigure scale!
  3. The year of bunny is almost to come. In Chinese tradition, every family will prepare a candy box which will soon become the gravity of candy-hunting children. Every year I build a new candy box. I think that is way better than to buy the standard boring box available elsewhere. For the cover design, I am inspired by traditional Chinese paper-cut art. 4. Here is my review on 80111 Lunar New Year Parade: THE GOOD: Looking great and very interesting building experience. Impressive on getting the floats move in a realistic way. 18 excellent minifigures! Printed parts for the LEGO shop dragon. The chinese new year mascot big head has so much MEME potentials. Very competitive pricing. THE NOT SO GOOD: Stickers ... I think we are so spoilt from previous years with no stickers. Some new legs printing would be nice I wish there are more utilisation of the shiny gold piece than pearl gold. This set has surpassed my expectation. When it was first announced, I had mixed feelings on New Year Parade selected for the set in 2023 because while it happens, it just not as traditional as events previously depicted. However, after building this set, I really like it. It looks great and the action features work every so well. On top of that, this is very good building experience because I never built something like this before. I do feel LEGO may use similar design for a future winter village collection set. And the 18 minifigures are excellent, that big head is my favourite and can't wait to put it on Thanos body. Although, legs printing would be even nicer for some minifigures. This set pricing is also very competitive, to be honest with recent price hike, at NZD170, this set is actually pretty good value with great build and interesting new parts. At the end of the day, I really like this set. While it's not the top CNY set but it's definitely worthy on my top 5. I will totally recommend this to anyone even you are not interested in Chinese New Year.
  5. Here is my review on the other 2022 Chinese New Year set, 80109 Lunar New Year Ice Festival: THE GOOD: The frozen lake is the star of the set, both the look, design and building experience are excellent. Great display piece. Love the fishing hole. Ice Planet Homage!!! 2 variation of the Photo standee. Surprisingly no stickers! THE NOT SO GOOD: Lacking Chinese New Year vibes. Overall, I had a great time building this set. The building experience and in terms of display piece, it's probably a better one compared to 80108 Lunar New Year Traditions. The frozen lake is just great, as I never built anything like this before so the feeling was so refreshing. (It's like the first time building Ninjago City on how you build the water with clear tiles). I'm surprised it wall panels they used as when the set first revealed I thought it would be flat tiles. It's also great how many little things they fit under the layer of ice. Even the edges around the lake were fun the build. It's not just about the lake but a lot of little things around it as well, the fishing hole was nicely done. The end product just look great, and the same techniques could probably be used to build a huge ice skating arena. Surprisingly no stickers too. Well, 80108 did have a few so I thought the signage pieces would be stickers but it came as printed. Now I do really question what exactly is LEGO's policy on whether it's going to be printed or stickers. One thing though, I do feel the set lacking Chinese New year vibes. May be because the focus in the lake or the big portion of white colour but even so, there are minimum Chinese New year decor compared to other chinese new year sets. So in terms of a Chinese New Year set, 80108 is probably better in this regard. This is more like an oriental winter village. Anyway this is no doubt an excellent lego set that I would recommend to everyone. I was also one of those who wished LEGO to continue with base plates and modular compatible but after building this, I think the current design totally works, and it's massive (way bigger than what I thought it would be compared to the photos). Hope you enjoy this set the way I did if you bought this or going to buy this.
  6. Local stores put this on shelf earlier than expected and here is my review on 2022 Chinese new year set, 80108 Lunar New Year: THE GOOD: Good concept and enjoyable building experience despite the base of each section are the same build. The mandarin tree is one of the best plant build in recent years. God of Fortune minifigure is awesome. Some fun call backs to previous sets in the form of stickers. Some great new minifigure parts. Love the sleeping dad face. Each tradition can be displayed on its own based on your preference. Some great new printed parts. Designed to be a fun family building experience. THE NOT SO GOOD: The modular stacking is not as easy as it seems. Can be a bit flimsy too when stacked up. The central piece has a few decorations but you can't really see if all connected. It doesn't look that good on its own. Overall, this set exceeds my expectation. Originally, I was more into 80109 but after building this set I started to appreciate this a lot. The concept of small section with LOTS OF DETAILS that can stack up in a modular way is great. And some of the small details in each section just blew my mind. (the mandarin tree). Once again the CNY theme delivers excellent minifigures and parts. The god of fortune is really authentic. Now I really hope all these new parts can be ordered from B&P from 1st Jan. Having each section to be built separately and having individual instruction booklet for each really promote the whole family fun idea. While this is a great set, I did find the stacking do not work as smooth as I would hope. However, the set is still too good to not recommend to everyone. The price is a bit high but I do believe the enjoyment and satisfaction from this set overweights the price. Highly Recommended.

MOD Story of Nian for Lego City

Hello everyone, I recently started a MOD of the Lego set 80106 Story of Nian. I read in some youtube comments that the set is based on a traditional chinese compund called Siheyuan. I recommend you check out some images on google of these kind of buildings. But obviously the Lego set is only the front wall and entrance. So I decided I wanted to extend this a bit. An actual Siheyuan can be quite large, so for now my plan is to combine the 80106 with the other Chinese new year set, the spring lantern festival and build a wall all around the park and maybe some additional building to insert it into a city. But for now let me show you some pictures of the progress so far. If you have any questions I will try to answer them
  8. Here is my review on the other 2021 CNY set 80106 Story of Nian: THE GOOD: The Nian Beast, especially the head build is interesting. The look of the entrance is very authentic. Love the design of the door. Excellent selections of minifigures with new printed torsos. Surprising amount of space. Once again, great value on what you are paying. THE NOT SO GOOD: To be honest, can't find any. The only thing I would comment on is why Lego expects the grand parents to do all the heavy cleaning work considering the accessories given to them ... lol Overall, it is another great set. Although I personally think 80107 is better but this is still good. It may be just a facade build but as far as I know about this style of houses, it really just a wall so it kinda makes sense and the space in front of the entrance gives this set a lot more depth that you seen in the photos. The design of the door is just brilliant. The Nian beast also a very interesting build. With 6 minifigures with new torsos, this set is really great value of money. I will recommend this set to everyone. A few side notes, I found it funny the designer gave the grandparents cleaning duty and the superheroes effect parts for the fire works really exaggerating and you probably want to get away from those fireworks in real life XD. Especially if you speak/understand Cantonese, seeing the grandmother holding a shovel to clean snow during new year does not really align with the supposed new year theme =P
  9. Happy New Year, just like previous years dashed out to buy and build this. Here is my review on 80107 Spring Lantern Festival. THE GOOD: Looks stunning. A good looking completed build. Various interesting build techniques and design, like the bridge, way to build terrain, the pavilion, the bamboo tress. So many new pieces and new printed pieces and torsos. Compatibility with modular buildings. Great value. THE NOT SO GOOD: None, but if I have to I probably single out the bench on the footpath but being an obstacle. (This is very nitpicking) Overall, LEGO has outdone themselves again. I think this is the best Chinese new year set to date. It looks stunning and compared to previous years, this is the only completed build. You can also easily extend this with different modular sets or create you own. It's difficult to single out what is the best part of the set simply I love the whole set. Although the package said 8+ but some of the builds will need extra patience and experience. The whole garden just looks so lively. I'll totally recommend this set and this is probably already a contender for set of 2021. Especially the price is very good as well considering what you are getting from this! Off topic, but the OX lantern does give me idea of the Brazen Bull. Also is switch is right on the butt of the ox, which is quite funny to be honest XD
  10. The 2020 Chinese New Year sets have now been released in Asia Pacific region, I immediately got my hands on it this morning and here is my review on it: THE GOOD: Excellent display piece and 14 minifigures! NO STICKERS! YES I REPEAT, NO STICKERS! So many new and great pieces. Fairly interesting builds and I don't think it's for 8+. More like 12+ in my opinion. There are some very nice touch on replicating the authenticity of chinese new year. Seriously, the price is very fair in terms of what you get from it. THE NOT SO GOOD: Can't find any, if there is one probably some of the builds can be repetitive. Overall, I think this is a 10 out of 10 and Lego has set a very high bar for 2020. And not a single stickers, I wonder if Lego will continue this trend. With 14 minifigures and some of them are exclusive, at the current price it just too good of a deal to pass. Great design, fun build (took me 3.5hrs) and so many new pieces as well. More over, this time is not regional specific and will be widely available globally (Jan 10th for US and Europe I believe). I'd totally recommend this set to anyone.

    [MOC] Dragon Dance

Parade of Chinese New Year celebrators with their fiery paper dragon. This was my entry on happening category in collaborative town display contest on our LUG Palikkatakomo Ry's exhibit on Model Expo 2016 last weekend. I won the category. As a (partially) Bionicle builder, I wanted to use some Bionicle pieces on my minifig-scale SYSTEM displays in this exhibit, and thus the dragon was born. More on Cyclopic Bricks.

    MOC: Chu Nail Salon

Chu Nail Salon I had been building a single level Oriental Restaurant and was close to finishing when Toorayay posted his Octopus Restaurant http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=97675. Mine wasn't to that high level so I quickly had to come up with an alternative. So, I made some minor changes to the facade, added an additional level, changed the SNOT Lettering, ditched the interior in its entirety and came up with... Chu Nails! Here's details of the SNOT lettering. I wanted something that looked signage on a cheap hotel. There's a combination of right way up and upside down vertical and horizontal connections clipped onto the cattle grid background. Details of the front entrance. I was looking for an abstract Nail display and one of the earlier iterations had nail brushes moving via technic gears and axles and although it functioned it looked too Heath Robinson to remain. The interior. This shows the foot-bath, nail table, overhead lighting and a couple of mirrored tables (stolen from a Friends set) And a view from the other angle showing the waiting room - complete with L shaped sectional sofa, fish tank and potted plant and restroom. And a final shot of Chu Nail's during Chinese New Year Thanks for reading. Comments, criticism and ridicule most welcome!
  13. Happy Chinese New Year everyone! The challenge here was to create the smallest possible horse with poseable legs, and the simplest way to convey the grace of the traditional Chinese character for horse.
