For some time I have been thinking about building something with rocks and lava. I started designing Darth Vader’s Castle for a Star Wars event back in August, but soon realized I wouldn’t be able to build it within 2 months. Thus, I abandoned the idea. As it happens I also wanted to build something from Lord of the Rings. It’s one of my favourite stories and surprisingly I haven’t build anything of that theme before. Combine rocks, lava and Lord of the Rings and this is what you get: Barad-dûr, Sauron’s stronghold in Mordor. I really enjoyed building my Cinderella Castle on 1 baseplate of 48 x 48 studs and decided that Sauron’s fortress had to fit on 1 baseplate as well. Somehow it was easier to design this digitally starting at the top and ending with the bottom. The model took about 4 months to design and build, contains about 6300 parts and is about 67cm in height. For the lava I used Light STAX layered with transparent orange plates and tiles. I think this is working really well and it gives a nice glow to the black walls and turrets of the fortress. And now a couple of pictures. You'll find many more pictures on Flickr.
After finishing it and creating minifigures I uploaded it to LEGO Ideas which you can find here: Four-Towered Castle It contains some extra information such as piece counts. Feel free to leave a support on the LEGO Ideas site if you like it. 3D Model view here on Sketchfab: Four-Towered Castle The Full Inside view. Note that the castle is made in a "L" shaped layout. The left/West Entrance. Notice the flaps that would allow archers/crossbowmen to fire through and take cover. The inside side of the West entrance. Entrance to the hall from the courtyard/bailey.
