Does LEGO actually destroy their molds or not?
Transparency for Effect posted a topic in General LEGO DiscussionCan anyone actually confirm if LEGO destroys their old, unused molds or not? It's been allegedly stated that like, BIONICLE's old molds no longer exist but it'd be pretty stupid for LEGO to just destroy molds when they don't know what they'll need in the future, as well as be against the entire concept of LEGO to just permanently discontinue parts. I also remember when talking of the Ideas space suit thing being redesigned, they may have mentioned molds LEGO didn't have or use anymore.
A chronology of Lego molds?
SecondHandLego posted a topic in General LEGO DiscussionRecently, I started selling some of my second hand lego at bricklink.com. I happened to have bought a batch of second hand lego with some old parts in it going back to the early 1970s or late 1960s. On BrickLink I noticed there is an interest in these older parts. For example the ones with 'Pat. pend.' (Patent pending. Lego applied for patents in different countries as of the late 1950s or earlier) inscribed on the inside, or the ones that have it erased with a small 'blob' (after the patents were granted). Also the location of the molding 'pip' is apparently telling for the age of the brick and hence of the value of it to Lego collectors. Such markings are of couse very handy to estimate the age of a brick. However, I noticed that there is a more detailed coding scheme in the bricks that seems to identify their respective molds. It consists of letters and numbers in various coding schemes and locations on the bricks. I'm sure you know what I mean. (but if not have a look here https://frankvanderm...-of-lego-molds/ Interestingly, while going through a batch of 'Pat. Pend.' 2x3 plates, I noticed a few funny mistakes in the molds. Apparently, the images are too big and have been removed. Check the above mentioned link to see one of them. It seems interesting to me to have a chronology of the different molds (and colors), at least for a number of often-used bricks. I tried to find it through Google but could not find anything. Does anyone know of such a chronology? Would you be interested in having access to it if it existed? Would you be interested in collecting the data?
Make recolored lego pieces
Hidronax posted a topic in Minifig Customisation WorkshopHello, some time ago I happened to read this topic, in which it is said lego pieces can be melt using acetone, and I wondered "Would it be possible to use this molten plastic in molds to create recolored lego pieces?" There are many pieces that have never been made in this or that colour, one could make molds from the 'wrong colour' pieces and create what he's looking for Still, I'm not sure acetone would evaporate properly since there's little to no exposure to air in the mold, and the inner part of the new piece might remain liquid anyway once the outer part hardened. I'm quite new to piece customisation, I have little experience (I've always considered myself a 'purist') and I don't know if something like this has ever been done before. What do you think? I'm curious to hear what you think :)
Minifig molding customization help
Perturbed Python posted a topic in Minifig Customisation WorkshopI've been on eBay recently and I saw some really cool minifigures, something that really stood out to me was the helmets (I'm talking starwars here :P) I really want to make my own mold and make my own well.. helmets. What do I need to accomplish this task? Is there a cheap alternative? I bought "Instant Mold" and I'm waiting for it to arrive, but I think the main problem is the cast. Any help is appreciated.
