    [MOC] The Black Serpent

Hello Lego Castle Fans! for starters - it's going to be a long slow project :) Do you remember 6057 Sea Serpent set from 1992? I've never had this set in my collection, I thought it might be worth building a new version... for Black Falcons fraction! One week ago I started building my first ship project - Medieval Cog "The Black Serpent"! This is still work in progress moc, I have a lot of work to do :) Now, has 43 cm long and almost 900 parts (will be more). Then I will make my own sail, so far I have prepared the material (my old pillow), I painted it white, I still have to paint the Black Falsons logo. But it's not over! I also want buils some area, fragment of sea and coast with some stronghold - for Raven Knights. The next steps are: - complete the ship's design, - make a sail, - order a lot of new parts, - hunt few sheeps from set 10775 I prepared the first material from this project, if you are interested, check out my youtube - Edge of Bricks channel :)

    Cog

Cog or Kogge A cog is a type of ship that first appeared in the 10th century, and was widely used from around the 12th century on. Eventually, around the 14th century, the cog reached its structural limits. This model is a somewhat generic version of this ship. However, some features narrows it down to being from around 1300, +-50 years. The ship type was a northern European brake from the sleek Viking ship. The need for spacious and relatively inexpensive ships led to the development of this trader workhorse. Fore and stern castles would be added for defense against pirates, or to enable use of these vessels as warships. It is in minifig-scale or 1:40’ish. The model will have the dimensions Length: 68 cm, Height: 75 cm (with stand), Width: 19 cm (Beam) There is approx. 4300 bricks in the model.

    Medieval Ships

Lately I have made some ships from the Middle Ages. I am sharing them here as they could fit nicely with castles, knights, catapults and armor. The Middle Ages is a broad term, but according to Wikipedia, it is the period 500-1500. So far I have made: A Dromon, The Skuldelev Ships, A Cog, A Caravel, A Carrack and A Galley. All ships are minifig scale or approx. 1:40. Some models can altered in to waterline models, ie. the bottom can be removed so that they can stand on a "water surface". They are digital for now, but that may change. Here I confine myself to a picture of each ship. Some of them have additional pictures. These are in the pirate forum, where each ship has its own topic and on Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/131641614@N06/albums Dromon From Greek δρόμων, dromōn, "runner" was a galley and the most important warship of the Byzantine navy from the 5th to the 12th century. Length: 93 cm, Height: 43 cm, Width: 37 cm (with oars) Bricks: approx. 4350 Can be altered in to a waterline model. Skuldelev Ships 1-6 The Viking ships from Roskilde. Excavated in 1962. The largest model, Skuldelev 2, will have the following dimensions Length: 80 cm, Height: 40 cm, Width: 10.5 cm The smallest model, Skuldelev 6, will have the following dimensions Length: 29 cm, Height: 21.5 cm, Width: 7 cm Approx. 4900 bricks in all models combined. 2100 in Skuldelev 2, 1100 in Skuldelev 1 and 450-700 in each of the other ships. Skuldelev 1 A”large” cargo ship, Knarr, 1030 A. D. Skuldelev 2 (and 4) A warship, Skeid, 1042 A. D. Is so large that the excavation team initially thought it was two ships, hence 2 and 4 Skuldelev 3 A cargoship, Byrding, 1040 A. D. Skuldelev 5 A small warship, Snekkja, 1030 A. D. Skuldelev 6 A fishing boat or small cargo vessel, Ferje, 1030 A. D. Cog The cog is a ship type used from the 10th century to the 14th century. This model could represent a cog from from approx. 1270-1330. If anyone knows anything else, do tell. Length: 68 cm, Height: 75 cm, Width: 19 cm Bricks: approx. 4300 Can be altered to a waterline model. Caravel The caravel was developed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Shown here in both a lateen rigged and square-rigged version. With a length of 14 m (scaled), the model is roughly the same size as Niña (Santa Clara) and Pinta from the famous journey to Asia in 1492. Length: 40 cm, Height: 45 cm, Width: 10.5 cm Bricks: approx. 1300 (in one of them) Carrack Karrack, Caravela, Nau, Nao, Neef or Kraak., About. 1500 The ship type is a precursor to the galeon and builds on the cog, the holk / hulk and various Mediterranean ship types. When I researched this type of ship there were some very far-out versions of what it might look like. Maybe I will make some of them at some point, but here I have used different plans for Santa Maria and a lot of common sense. Length: 85 cm, Height: 75 cm, Width: 23 cm Bricks: approx. 6400 Can be altered to a waterline model. Galley This is a model of an Italian style galley. 14th century, 1571 or mid. 18th century depending on weight put on references or type. The main characteristics of the model are from La Capitana, a galley of Malta. The lines, armament, oars and overall arrangement follows the drawings of this ship. These are indexed in Architectura novalis mercatoria (published by Fredrik Henrik af Chapmann in 1768) as no.18 on plate LVIII Details, such as color, not provided by Chapmann, are from Real, the flagship of Don John of Austria in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The details from this Spanish Real compared to the French La Réale from 1694; however, this ship is not a main reference. Length: 166 cm, Height: 113 cm (with stand), Width: 82 cm (with oars) Bricks: approx. 16200 Can be altered to a waterline model.
  4. Another freebuild that i originally built for the Summer Joust and only recently got around to re-photographing with Kaliphlin personnel. Not all of the Kaliphlin fleet are huge dromons or lanteen rigged ships. On the west coast of Kaliphlin in particular, Avalonian style cogs are popular among patrol ships for their hardiness and troop carrying capacity. Here a Kaliphlin patrol ship plys the waters around the island of al' Esterbroke. I have to say, i quite like this design - i hope you have enjoyed it too! C & c welcome as always.
  5. Hi everybody! This is Ulrich von Koehlers ship, The Pelican. The Pelican is a class 2 Trade ship, it's a cog. More story will come later! [GNAR] The Ahok

My entry on behalf of Kaliphlin for the Great Naval Arms Race Contest (also Approved UoP DoH credit for Trade and Law: shipping by sea / water): While the Ahok is really only a shallow-bottom cog used to ferry customs inspectors from the pier to merchant ships arriving in Kaliphlin's harbors, don't tell that to Capt. James T. Kaulk or his pointy-eared first mate. In his mind, every time the Ahok sets sail it's to defend Kaliphlin against the invading horde - and in the end, his boat could be used to move boarding parties in a naval battle... if no one else was available.
  8. Mitgardian Attack on the Sea Elves Mitgardians have become anxious in the last month. After claiming Kaliphlin pirates were molesting their trade, they have deployed the navy at sea to “deter” these pirates. One of the more feared squadrons out of the Great White North is the Black Squadron. It consists of three vessels, a fighting platform Cog called the Loki, a small cog called the Fishmonger’s Wife, and a raider class vessel called The Grogslaughter. The Black Squadron makes port at a small harbor in the south of Mitgardia. It is so effective because all of its officers graduated from the Mitgardia Naval Academy in the same year and were deployed together. They have a strong bond that has led to their undefeated record on the waves. Class portrait of the class of the year 94 AH: DSC_0821 by skaforhire, on FlickrThe bottom From left to right. The top row, graduating the top of their class and earning the Thor’s Shield for their class, Alvin Arlonson and Porter Thorsfoot .The middle row is Jack Parso and Sven Yarlson, all four of these officers are on the Grogslaughter. In the bottom row: Harold Vales of the Loki, next to him is the man who graduated dead last, Nelbert Northman, next to him is Guindis Ogleson both of the Fishmonger’s Wife, and last is the Loki’s captain, Marl Turnstorm. A standing navy is an expensive luxury, so most of the time these ships are in drydock and the crew is furrowed. – But not this year, Mitgardia on heightened alert has sent its ships to sea. The Fishmonger’s Wife: DSC_0795 by skaforhire, on Flickr And the Loki DSC_0777 by skaforhire, on Flickr The Sea Elves. Sea Elves, sometimes called Sea Gypsies, are a people estranged from their homeland. They rarely come on land other than to sell the fish they have caught and to repair their boats. Sometimes they don’t even come to land for these matters, as they prefer to trade at sea. They are pacifists, and don’t carry weapons. They prefer to run from a fight. This makes them common targets for piracy. Because of this, certain bands of Sea Elves have made pacts with navies of some guilds to protect them. By far, the largest population of Sea Elves claiming allegiance to a guild fly the Kaliphlin flag. Kaliphlin traders have found great value in protecting the Sea Elves and making them lasting trading partners. Sea Elves take in anyone who wants to join them in their life on the sea. For this reason, the Sea Elves are a diverse people, most being half-elf or fully human. Long ago almost all Sea Elves were pure elves though. Here is a band of Sea Elves fishing in the waters North of the Mystic Isles DSC_0652 by skaforhire, on Flickr. Sea Elf children learn to work close to their parents early on. Babies are often kept above deck so that they learn fishing before speaking. DSC_0660 by skaforhire, on Flickr DSC_0665 by skaforhire, on Flickr DSC_0647 by skaforhire, on Flickr These poor sea elves have just spotted warships on the horizon. The wind is not in their favor, they must pray that the Mitgardians approaching are good law-abiding citizens of the sea. DSC_0791 by skaforhire, on Flickr DSC_0799 by skaforhire, on Flickr It’s the Loki and the Fishmonger’s Wife. The Grogslaughter is being refit. Still, two thirds of the squadron is more than enough power to stop the Sea Elves. They have no choice but to come alongside the Mitgardians and submit to search. DSC_0783 by skaforhire, on Flickr But these Mitgardians have been bored at sea for nearly a month now. They want action, not routine stop and searches. Their captains seem willing to give this action to them. DSC_0792 by skaforhire, on Flickr Guindis Ogleson orders a boarding party to go aboard the smaller Sea Elf Craft. DSC_0806 by skaforhire, on Flickr Ogleson kills the father of the baby on board this ship, and while the mother looks on, a Mitgardian sailor throws her baby to the sharks. DSC_0811 by skaforhire, on Flickr She is then skewered by another Mitgardian who says “Look Cap’ I shows ya how to fish!” and then hoists her body over the edge to bate the sharks. Her last thoughts are happy as she knows she will be with her family soon. DSC_0815 by skaforhire, on Flickr The Sea Elves on the other ship fair just as poorly. The Mitgardians from the Loki make the elves jump from the ship and swim as fast as they can. Then, the Mitgardians use them as target practice. The youngster on this ship was killed by Harold Vales’ own sword. The Mitgardians finished murdering the rest of the crew and sunk the smaller junk. They then sailed away with a prize crew aboard the larger Sea Elf ship. The Officers of the class of 94 know they will make a pretty penny selling this boat in a Mitgardian port. The Officers have a good laugh about it and look forward to taking more prizes from the Kaliphlinites. DSC_0778 by skaforhire, on Flickr DSC_0809 by skaforhire, on Flickr Mitgardians high-five after throwing a baby to the sharks. A note on the builds: I wasn't trying to make water, I didn't have enough time for that. I used a few wave crests I had made a while back strategically in some of the pictures. The MOC sea elf ship was an attempt to make a larger boat that fit with the smaller orient adventures boat. I have like 11 of those, and I was trying to find some alternatives to diversify the sea elf fleet.
