    [REVIEW] 75575 Ilu Discovery

INTRODUCTION Maybe you spent part of your Thanksgiving holiday watching Avatar: The Way of Water. Or maybe you went to see it in IMAX. Or maybe you just like water based Lego sets. Whatever audience you fall into, is this Avatar set right for you? SET INFORMATION Number: 75575 Title: Ilu Discovery Theme: Avatar Released: 2023 Part Count: 179 Box Dimensions: 26.2 x 14.1 x 4.8 cm Weight: 219g Set Price (RRP): £19.99/$24.99/€24.99 Price per Part: 11.2p/14.0c/14.0c Links: Brickset, Bricklink THE BOX The front shows the creature, the Ilu, which the set is named after, gliding through the water. The back shows what the set is like when on display in-real-life. CONTENTS OF THE BOX Inside are 3 bags, a punch sheet for the fins of the Ilu, and the instructions. THE BUILD This isn't a complicated build, but the end result is striking. The first bag contains the pieces to create the small sections of coral. The instructions include photos from the movie that depict some of the coral the set designers used as reference points. Though I can say the photos don't do the movie scenes justice. The Ilu itself is brick-built but uses plastic punch-sheet elements for the wing-like fins. These are held on by Technic pins and are very effective. The white Technic pieces could be obtrusive, but the set designer has done a really good job of integrating them in a way that doesn't make them standout in a bad way. Pretty much any way you choose to display the Ilu in the provided coral looks great! The fins have limited articulation, but it doesn't detract from the pose-ability. The underside is nicely finished. It's not the way you'd want to display the Ilu, but I appreciate all the work the designer went to to make sure the beast looks finished from all angles. Without an Avatar figure on it's back the Ilu looks quite regal swimming through the water. And on it's display stand it continues to shine. The mouth uses the same jaw piece from Fantastic Beats and Jurassic World. It opens and closes nicely. The figures, representing Na'vi children, don't use the long, Woody legs that their adult counterparts do. Though they use the same tail piece, first introduced in the Looney Toons CMF. Their hair pieces have been specifically molded to fit around the ears. And can be switched between any of the Na'vi heads and still fit. Using one of these hair pieces on a regular minifigure can be done with varying degrees of success. The hair piece for Tuk (male and shorter) looks like dreadlocks from the front. But from the side, the space for the ears really stands out awkwardly. The hairpiece for Tsireya (female and longer) looks good from the front. And from the back the space for the ears is hardly noticeable. The tails match the color of their Na'vi and match up nicely with the torsos. OVERALL First, I'm sorry I didn't turn this into a mech. I like how it looks on my desk too much to break it down right now! Overall this is a nice set. Though I do have a few complaints. As has been shown in countless MOCs it's possible to create good looking coral from just about any Lego element. The set designers did a good job with this coral, but the end result feels a little small. The connection Technic piece being black also isn't good. I understand creating this piece in trans-clear was outside the realm of possibility for a set this size. But using a shade of blue to simulate water would have been a better choice. This set is a great display piece, has fun colors, fun pieces, and good minifigures. But it's overpriced. This would be a fantastic $15 set. However, on the shelves it's a $25 set. There aren't any giant molds, so I'm guessing the price is due to the licensing fee. If you can find it on sale I would recommend buying it. SCORE How do I rate this set? DESIGN 9 The colors really pop. The build is solid. And potential pitfalls like exposed Technic elements have been mitigated. BUILDING EXPERIENCE 8 Nothing feels repetitive and each part is a good little build. FEATURES 8 The Ilu is very pose-able which I feel is the main feature of this set. The coral could be a little more robust. But overall it's a good set in terms of features. PLAYABILITY 10 It can swoosh! The Ilu is very solid. And since the wings are plastic there's little fear of damaging them during flight... I mean swim. PARTS 8 It's a good selection of parts for this kind of set. The coral provides fun colors for pieces which would work well in other MOCs. VALUE FOR MONEY 2 I'd pay $20 for this if I was a fan of Avatar. $18 if I was a fan of the parts. $15 if I was a member of the general public looking to round out my Amazon order with enough items for free shipping. It's not worth $25. FINAL SCORE: 7 It's a great display piece, has fun colors, fun pieces, and good minifigures. But it's overpriced.
  2. Here is my review on LEGO Avatar 75571 Neytiri & Thanator vs. AMP Suit Quaritch: THE GOOD: The AMP suit is a nice little build. Nice to include a small colourful terrain. THE NOT SO GOOD: Pricey. Brick built animals with moulded head looks odd. I originally bought this set for the Neytiri Minifig since I've got Jake but the Tree of Soul is just too expensive. So I was getting into this with minimal expectation plus I'm hardly recall the details of the movie. And I was surprised with this set. I think the AMP suit is fun too build and looks good as a nice little exo skeleton. The only part I wish can be improved is the knee to be movable as well but I guess with this size, the top half will cripple it. While the Thanator is a good build with great articulation joints but it just feels weird with brickbuilt animals, it looks too mechanical in my opinion. Having some additional terrain is good and it's so colourful, would be great parts to use in any fantasy jungle build. I was lucky I got some card rewards point to buy this set, otherwise it;s very pricey. I would proabably only recommend this set to people who has something they need in this set even though it's a fairly good set and if you really want a Avatar set, the RDA Samson one probably worth the price tag a bit more =)
  3. Here is my review on 75573 Floating Mountains: Site 26 & RDA Samson: THE GOOD: Great build and great display value. The cabin of site 26 looks great. RDA Samson looks way better than the product picture. Interesting building experience through out. Great idea to be able to display the RDA Samson flying. Good minifigures selection. THE NOT SO GOOD: $$$$ very expensive in RRP. The horse doesn't have any articulation. The tank for Jake could have been using a different piece than a standard door. This set turns out to be a nice surprise. I really like the RDA Samson as I do think the product pictures do not do this build justice. The cabin is great with interior details for those who familiar with the movie. On top of that, both are interesting build. And it's great idea to allow you to connect the chopper to the terrain. With 5 excellent minifigures, I was very happy with this set in general. However, there are some small things which I reckon would be deal breaker for a lot of people. For example, I'm a bit disappointed the horse (I forgot the name) does not have articulations. Other than that I biggest hurdle will be the high recommended retail price. I would still recommend to everyone especially this will be discounted for sure. Oh more thing, the instruction booklets have photos from scenes featuring the builds and funny thing is RDA Samson uses the photo the moment this chopper is destroyed.
  4. "Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished." This is my latest MOC designed in the style of the Architecture Skyline series. It features four of the key locations from "Avatar: The Last Airbender," including: - The Southern Air Temple (with Appa and Aang's glider) [AIR] - The Northern Water Tribe [WATER] - Ba Sing Se [EARTH] - Fire Nation Royal Palace [FIRE] Let me know what you think! Anyone who may be interested in the instructions can find them here and on Rebrickable.com.
  5. Flameo my fellow Avatar fans, I’m a huge fan of ATLA and I need your help. Recently I have submitted a project on LEGO IDEAS, it's the Spirit Oasis from Avatar: The Last Airbender. As you might know LEGO IDEAS is a website which allows users to submit ideas for Lego products to be turned into potential sets. So If my project reaches 10.000 supporters it may become an official LEGO Product. Many Avatar Fans including me would love to purchase another LEGO ATLA Set since the original sets from 2006 are not available anymore. Check out my project: The Spirit Oasis Project on LEGO IDEAS All you need to do is press the support button and create a free LEGO Account if necessary. Thanks a lot, Every supporter counts!
  6. So when I read about TC13, I first had something huge in mind... But actually I think the pullback series are cute because of what they are: small, simple and quite fast. So I decided to keep in the spirit of official pullbacks, and keep it small. However, I did not go for the obvious racer or offroader car, I want to do something not done before (at least not by TLG). So I went for a helicopter. The type was not a difficult decision: after watching barmans incredible avatar helicopter numerous times, I wanted to do one myself. So how to make a pullback work without any wheels... Here is the proof of concept result of tinkering an evening with two pullback motors and some rotors: And a video of it in action. I'm actually quite happy with the way it works, although it does not use the full extend of the windup mechanism. So I'll stay with this concept and try to refine the looks in the coming period.
  7. Hi! I try to upload an avatar pic from my PC, it's within the 100x100 limit, it's not bigger than 5 KB and I still get this error: The total filespace required to upload all the attached files is greater than your per post or global limit. Please reduce the number of attachments or the size of the attachments. Any idea why?

    Leopold of Norvica

When Leopold en Michael arrived in Norvica they met a lot of old friends who were brought in Kaliphlin as a slave. A lot of civilians who lives in Norvica were born in the Lowlands, the same land were Leopold and Michael came from. Because of the heavy rumours about a new war decide the two brothers to defend the beautiful village of Norvica. All the people who were slaves in their lives has a lot of bad memory's about that time and don't want to be slave again. They rather choice to fight till they die than be captured and sold like a animal on a marked place. Leopold and Michael understand what they have to do and want to help this village to joint the royal guards of Norvica. This is leopold and he is a member now of the royal guards of the village Norvica. And it is my new avatar.

    Maiden Voyage

Comic Hi there, I said a couple of days ago that I would do something special for the presentation of my latest ship... well, this is it, I will however post the ship itself later in the MOC forum. This comic features several signature figures (avatars) of Classic-Pirates members, more specifically those that had their input in my WIP frigate thread. However, I didn't succeed in including everyone I wanted to, some people don't have an avatar/sigfig and I don't always have the parts to recreate one. Also, if you're looking for a serious story...this is not it, I mean, the main character is buying baguettes for pete's sake . On the other hand, this comic does show some new pictures of my latest ship, the French corvette Beatrix. As for the plot, my sigfiggy invites over his friends to go on a sailing trip with my new ship. Enjoy. I've been wanting to do another comic ever since the TORIII ended, originally I was going to make a celebration party comic but circumstances stopped from doing that. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it, perhaps that's easier if your avatar is part of the comic . I'm sorry for the open spot on page 6. I will post the Beatrix tomorrow or the day after .

    AVATAR - Tree of Souls

Another entry in the AVATAR universe :o IT'S IN CUUSOO!!! ... for a change ::) Please support! http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/58752 Thanks
  17. It has been a while since I have last built anything… but let’s get started. Out in the distance a mysterious creature is approaching at an alarming speed. It’s a dark spirit and it appears to be quite angry. Despite Korra’s best efforts her attacks do only seem to annoy the dark spirit, and she is soon cornered. Fortunately Korra’s uncle Unalaq, the chief of the watertribes, knows a special waterbending technique that can tame this beast. A better look at the dark spirit’s facial markings. Unalaq is not the only new figure I have made. Here we have Unalaq and his children, Desna, a boy, and Eska, a girl. Who is who of the twins? I have also made some figures of Tenzin’s siblings, Bumi and Kya. Here we have Aang and Katara’s 3 kids together. And here we have the eccentric industrialist Varrick and his assistant and secretary Zhu Li. As usual new ideas and suggestions for improvements are always welcome.

  19. Commodore Ariel Brickson

    Starting with the avatar

Well, while I fit the last details of my 12-guns brig (HMS Defiant) like the sails (a bit important part of a sailing ship...), I prepared an special photo to be my avatar when I can put it. It's a simple composition with my main character (it suppose to represent myself as commodore) and two redcoats. Here you have it to see it well; I hope you like it... And don't confound yourselves; even if my uniform is blue, I'm a redcoat fan . Soon I will present the ship; with or without sails... Friendly from Sapin, Commodore Ariel.

    Mecha Tank, Korra, and Amon

This is a Mecha Tank, Korra, and Amon I have designed. Here is a close up of the figs. I am relatively satisfied with Korra. Not sure how I feel about Amon. On the Left you can see that the cockpit opens very much like that in the animation. The canopy raises, the upper plates hinge upward, and the lower plates hinge out. This one also has the "grappling hook" The tank on the right depicts a printed canopy that more accurately depicts the Canopy form the series. I am torn though. Do you guys think this looks better or just the full on clear one? Here are some more Tank weapons, the Bola and the electromagnet. I will soon be finishing my Hiroshi to pilot the Tank. I look forward to hearing any feedback you may have good or bad! If you really like this set then you can support it on Cuusoo here: http://lego.cuusoo.c...deas/view/29158 Cheers, Again, thank you for looking, any feedback, and your support!
