  1. TECHNIC AIRCRAFT CONTEST - VOTING TOPIC Voting will be open for a variable period of time. Closing date will most likely be somewhere between one and two weeks. VOTING RULES AND REGULATIONS Voting scheme uses the old Formula One style point distribution (10, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 POINT) You need to assign 10 points to the 1st place, 6 points to the second and so one. You need to vote for 6 ENTRIES (no more, no less) Clearly mention the ENTRY NUMBER and the NUMBER OF POINTS per entry that you vote on. If you joined Eurobricks after the start of the contest, you can be banned from voting (when vote rigging is suspected) You may NOT vote for your own entry. In the event of a tie for any place the Technic Staff will decide which entry wins. Our decision is final. Questions about voting can be asked in the Discussion Topic. For example (entries randomly chosen): --- comments can be placed above the votes 5: 10 (no comments here please) 6: 6 1: 4 9: 3 7: 2 3: 1 Or comments can be placed below the votes ---- NOTES Please use this exact notation NUMBER: VOTES (with a colon). Please don't type #1:10, 1 = 10 or 1) 10 or other notations. Stick to the example format shown above. Please use this thread only for voting. You may explain why you made your choice, but any general discussion should take place in the Discussion Topic. Comments should be placed ABOVE or BELOW the votes. Please don't comment on the same line as the votes. VOTING Voting scheme will be 100% member voting. Voting criteria are (in no particular order): Originality. Looks (shape, color scheme etc). Quality of the build. Functionality. ENTRIES All entries can be found in the entry thread: Please visit the entry topic to see all entries. 1. Fairey Rotodyne by BrickbyBrickTechnic 2. 2. I started working on this model many weeks ago in Lego Digital Designer first. The whole concept started with the quarter circles from BWE, which are able to perfectly accomodate the small rotors. I was heavily inspired by the (movie) Avatar's rendition of helicopters. After a lot of tinkering in LDD, it was time to start building in real life: It was here I discovered I made a big mistake. The control stick located in the cab used to tilt the rotors was reversed! I had to go back to the drawing board and correct the control mechanism. Few days, fixes and improvements later, this is what the final model looks like: I wanted the colors to randomly switch from yellow to make it look more eye-striking. Where possible I used black 2L pins instead of the blue ones. As stated in the topic name, this is a motorized model, powered by the small LiPo battery box which is hidden in the tail, next to a single M motor: The single M motor powers a total of 3 functions: - Drive rotors (always engaged, spinning in one direction only) - Opening cargo doors and rear ramp (powered by a gearbox) - Working winch (powered by a gearbox) You can see the driveline of all the motorized functions here: The red mechanism at closest to the M motor makes sure rotors are spinning in one direction only, irrelevant of which direction M motor spins. This way changing direction of the gearbox does not change in which direction rotors spin. Gearboy in front switches between openining doors+ramp and a winch. The doors and ramp are actuated by a single actuator located right behind the cockpit: The rear of the cargo doors is connected to the ramp via bewel gears, so both open at once: I also bult a small container which can be easily lifted by the motorized winch: The container can easily fit inside the cargo bay area: You can see the finished model's video below:
  3. Hey guys, here's my submission for the TC15 contest. I know I came in pretty late as it's been over a month now since the contest started, but I've been busy for the past few months and only recently found some time to build. My TC15 submission will be a model of the Sikorsky S-64, which I actually thought of building back in 2017 but later abandoned. I actually had a rotor setup ready back when I planned on building this, so fortunately I'm sorta able to "pick up where I left off". I plan on including a simple battery box/motor setup, where the motor powers the rotors at all times and a winch with the engagement of a directional gearbox. It will also include HoG steering, which will allow better control of the helicopter when rolling it around. I don't anticipate this being a very difficult project, and I can see myself finishing this easily in 2-3 weeks. I will have to order some orange parts (as this model will need lots of orange ofc), but other than that everything should come pretty easily. The only difficult parts I see are getting all the functions inside a tight space and making sure the helicopter has plenty of structural integrity. So far I'm about halfway done with the cockpit section. I still need to add an interior and some more orange pieces, and then it's on to the nitty gritty stuff. Photos:
  4. It's finally here - my studless remake of the very first Technic helicopter: It's been a bit of a long journey to get here, not only because of the work put into this model, but also because of the many failed TC15 entry ideas... Originally, I had planed on building a replica of the Hoversurf S3 2019 Hoverbike (which is basically a quadcopter you can ride on), but the small size of Lego propellers restricted me to such a small size, that I just couldn't fit any functions into it. Next, continuing the idea of some sort of quadcopter, I did some googling for other quadrotor aircraft, and although I managed to find some (in particular, the Curtiss-Wright VZ-7 and X-19), that idea also failed... Then, after a few days of thinking, I decided to just make something completely different - a flight simulator, based on the 8485 Technic Control Center. With this idea, I actually managed to make enough progress to post a WIP topic, and stuck with it for a several weeks, until I sadly had to abandon that as well... Finally, after trying and abandoning a few other ideas, and with only a few weeks left before the contest deadline, I stumbled across the idea of making a modern studless version of set 852 - the very first Technic helicopter, and one of the original four Technic sets released in 1977: Fast forward 3 weeks, the contest deadline has thankfully extended by 2 weeks (thanks @Jim ), and I've finally finished building... Features: Full studless construction - not a single stud in sight! Near perfect 3/4 scale (relative to the original set). Accurate collective rotor pitch control - unlike the original, where the rotor pitch is decreased when the swash plate rises. Manually powered drive train - can also be motorized, as seen in the video. 5. Hi all, I haven't been active in this forum for a while, although I'be been reading along all the time, but now, the contest fever has caught me again! I was separated from my Lego collection for almost a year and I finally wanted to start building something. So Jim's suggestion for a new EB contest came just at the right time. Without knowing the theme in more details, I've putted a small plane together. Fokker DR3: Even if I like this build, it would be much too simple for an EB contest, so something more complex in a similar size should be it. Having read and pondered a lot about Lego aircraft control, I came across this promising concept: You can see the joystick for height and lateral control in a very compact case. In addition, fake R4 engine is installed. But somehow I don't like the shape of the shell too much and the chassis is still missing. Meanwhile, the theme of TC15 was also known: build something flying, preferably an airplane. Quiet quick some several MOC heavyweights with promising ideas had signed in, so it was clear that I needed to build something different than this simple model. Incidentally, I stumbled upon the Zveno Project - impressive! That's the way it should be! With biplanes based on my DR3! What a fail! The plan was to have a PF engine and a simple gearbox for four Fake R6 engines, the landing gear and a flap for cargo. I also built a 3D Joystick, similar to the one from Rudivdk, but with more space consumption. But what an ugly and useless piece. From the idea perhaps feasible, the stability could have been done, but the playability? Impossible with such a colossus, few functions and the simple flyers. So back to my little plane? My 3D Joystick won't fit in. So I started playing around with several ideas, but none satisfied me ... While I was thinking about controlling Lego aircrafts and their playability, I got the final idea for my contest entry. At first it was just a little scribble, but the idea quickly took shape. The first obstacle, I have to lead three axes through a turntable. Is that possible? Yes, it is! This EB Topic shows how - well, almost. And this will be the heart piece of my entry: three axles through one turntable. This is still an early WIP, But I hope for quick progress and there is still some time left. So I still hope I can make it. What a gorgeous contest! I'm almost having the time of my life with Lego! Thank you very much for creating this contest, @Jim and @Milan. Meanwhile I will go ahead ... Thanks for your attention, Robert
  6. It seems about time for me to get into the TC15 spirit. I've been building up a storm in my dorm room every chance I've had when I haven't been studying, and it seems about time I share my progress. I noticed that there are notably few helicopters so far, I think just steph's Chinook and Eric's Skycrane. So I decided to join the fray, and I'm going big on this one, the Sikorsky S-70C Firehawk, the cousin of the military Blackhawk. Unlike the blackhawk though, this one comes in pretty colors: Sikorsky S-70C - N2FH FireHawk by Christopher Ebdon, on Flickr I want my model to focus on playability, so I plan on making the swashplate RC controlled with PF. I also wanted to use as few motors as possible, so here's what I'm planning: 1 L motor - rotor blade rotation 1 M motor (or L motor if needed) - swashplate control 1 Servo motor - switch between collective, left/right cyclic and forward/backward cyclic So few motors means that the gearbox is naturally a beast, so it will likely be taking up the entire rear of the helicopter. Waiting on a few more parts to arrive before I share what I've concocted on that front. In the meantime, here's what I've been working on: Sikorsky S70-C Firehawk - WIP by jwarner1718, on Flickr I apologize ahead of time for the wild colors and stickers, my selection of panels is pretty slim so I'll be playing 'rainbow warrior' for a while until I have most of the design down. Easier to order everything at once right? Sikorsky S70-C Firehwak - WIP by jwarner1718, on Flickr Both cyclic sticks are synchronized using a few linkages. They will not be linked up to the swashplate movement, something I had debated for a long time, but decided that with the route I had taken with the gearbox it just wasn't feasible to fit it in. I guess this makes a fair consolation prize though. Sikorsky S-70C Firehawk - WIP by jwarner1718, on Flickr The battery box sits behind the pilot seats, and the fake collective lever acts as a pin that can be removed to slide it out. I'm really excited for this contest, hoping to finish in time and that I haven't bitten off more than I can chew. If I don't make it before the contest though I'm definitely finishing this one. Cheers, Jonathan
  7. So, it's already been three days since the contest was announced, and I still haven't built anything yet... It's probably time to get started then! The Inspiration: The idea for my entry comes from the main model of set 8485 - a set I'm still yet to build despite owning most of the parts... The Goal: My plan for this build is basically a modern version of the above model, but with a plane replacing the helicopter, and including the following features: Movable ailerons and elevators Lifting, rolling, and pitching of the plane Full manual control - no remote control. (hopefully) Possibly something else... The First Prototype: Rather than spending an extra day building a working prototype, I decided to just quickly build the basic idea in LDD, as I know from experience that I rarely end up using anything from the first prototype... Anyway, that's all for now, I hope to have something functional built either tomorrow or the next day...
  8. TECHNIC AIRCRAFT CONTEST - INFORMATION TOPIC After discussing several contest ideas, we figured this was the most popular idea for the next contest....flying stuff! "The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who...looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space...on the infinite highway of the air." DESCRIPTION Build a LEGO Technic Aircraft. Obviously, your model doesn't have to be able to fly. This is not a wacky competition so we are looking for realistic vehicles. It doesn't have to be an existing vehicle or a model of an existing vehicle, but it needs to be something we could potentially see in real life. You can come up with your own concept design (like the B-model of the BMW Motor Bike), but we are not looking for futuristic unrealistic scifi designs. No spaceships either. Drones, jetpacks, balloons, zeppelins, planes, helicopters, etc are some of the potential models that come to mind. Here is a list of vehicles for which it wasn't very clear whether they are allowed: Kites, yes Gliders, yes Spacecraft, no Spaceshuttles/Orbiters, yes Rockets, yes SSTOs are Single Stage To Orbit-Spacecrafts , yes Ground Effect Vehicles, yes Hovercrafts, no DEADLINE Deadline date is Monday the 17th of February 2019. Contest will be closed on Tuesday the 18th of February, OR LATER. Disclaimer: I will close the contest when I see fit and when I have the time to process the results. This can be later than the deadline date. Please don't complain about this not being fair and all. RULES AND REGULATIONS The following section describes the contest specific and general rules and regulations. But before that, please take notice of a simple motto regarding the Eurobricks Contests: CONTESTS ARE FOR FUN! Of course there's competition, but at the end of the day, LEGO is just a hobby and the main goal for each of us is to have fun! CONTEST SPECIFIC RULES AND REGULATIONS Each entry needs to have a name (no name, no entry). Model Team style building is not permitted. You can use system parts, but keep it mainly Technic. Mindstorms and LEGO Electronics are permitted. SBrick and Buwizz are permitted. 3rd party Strings, Hoses and Rubber Bands are permitted. 3rd party tires are not permitted. Other 3rd party parts are not permitted. There is no size limit. GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS The contest is open to all EB members (also new members). Members can be banned from voting (when vote rigging is suspected). Voting rules will be explained later in the voting topic. One entry per member. Entries need to be new (never posted anywhere previously or shown at an event/LUG meeting). Only physical builds, so no LDD or other virtual entry. If you have any doubts about the suitability of your entry contact me, or Milan. All entries are to include only real LEGO. No clone brands, 3rd party parts, or digital entries allowed. Custom stickers are allowed. No cutting, sculpting or modifying parts. Entries are to be placed in the entry topic in this forum. Entries not in the entry topic are not eligible for voting. The entry post may be edited at any time up to the end of the contest, so feel free to make improvements if you wish. The contest might be closed later than the deadline. Don't complain about this not being fair. You have enough time to build. Don't ask for more time. We reserve the right to disqualify any entry that does not follow these rules. These rules can be changed whenever we see fit to ensure that people follow the intent of the contest. Jury members are not eligible to participate. WHAT DO I NEED TO ENTER? All participant need to create a discussion topic and create a post in the entry topic. DISCUSSION TOPIC A discussion topic starting with [TC15]. A discussion topic needs to show some actual progress (i.e. pictures of the build in progress) and should NOT be used to "reserve an idea". ENTRY POST The entry post in the entry topic should contain: Entry name. One or more pictures (max 3 of max 1024x1024). Embedded video (mandatory). Link to the discussion topic. VOTING Voting scheme will be public voting only, but only by members who have 50 posts or more. If you have less posts, you can vote, but your votes will be automatically excluded from the tally. Voting criteria are (in no particular order): Originality. Looks (shape, color scheme etc). Quality of the build. Functionality. PRIZES Three wonderful prizes can be picked from the five sets below. For the prizes we define two categories of contestants: Mortals (contestants who haven't won any medals in previous contests) and Immortals (contestants who have won one or more medals in previous contests). Top-3 winners will get medals as usual, regardless of the category. 1st PRIZE: WINNER OF THE CONTEST The winner of the contest calls dibs on one of the five sets. 2nd PRIZE: RUNNER UP OR FIRST MORTAL The second prize goes to: Highest ranked mortal, if the contest winner is an immortal (already has a medal) The person who ended second (actual runner up), if the contest winner is a mortal (has no medal yet) So, in theory both prizes can go to mortals, but I'm sure the immortals will do their best to prevent that 3rd PRIZE: RAFFLE PRIZE The third prize will be raffled among contestants who have created a discussion topic (early on), are actively showing progress and providing value to the community. @Milan and myself will decide who gets this prize. No discussion. The raffle winner can choose one of the three remaining sets.
