The Hedgehog A few weeks ago while I was watching Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, I spotted a large tank that caught my attention. From that I built this menacing 'bad boy' full of details and features and wrapped in a total dark gray color scheme. It's called The Hedgehog and the reason is quite obvious: dozens of dark tan claws guarantee maximum grip on all types of terrain. And the appearance resembles the small spiky mammal. The shape is deliberately awkward and a little cartoonish. I added details and features without ever going overboard. The upper part with the turret opens to expose a detailed little interior with such an assortment of armaments and equipment. Last but not least, the moustached commander looks like he came out of a WW II Panzer.

NIBARIKI, Hayao Miyazaki's Citroën 2CV and Tokyo snowfall A few months ago I built the personal studio of Hayao Miyazaki, Japan's greatest animation director and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, best-loved of all the Japanese animation studios. Now it seems that it snowed heavily in Tokyo, so much so that Hayao is walking in snow with his snowshoes and with his Husky. A pair of skis are already loaded on the Citroën 2CV, heading towards Mount Fuji! Hope you like it! -
MOC freely inspired by the feature film "Lupin III and the Castle of Cagliostro", a masterpiece and first feature film by the well-known director Hayao Miyazaki. In Japan the film was not initially successful, the romantic version of the gentleman thief was not liked even by its creator Monkey Punch. As for the TV series, however, over time, "Lupin III - The Castle of Cagliostro", will be recognized as the first masterpiece by Hayao Miyazaki, becoming a cult for entire generations, so much so that it is constantly republished for the home video market. This film will definitely launch Miyazaki's career bringing him ever closer to realizing his goal: the founding of Studio Ghibli. Film released in 1979 in Japan and only in 1984 in Italy, marked my childhood, in fact I was 10 years old, I loved the Lupin III cartoons but this film left me fascinated by that aura of mystery, adventure scenes and fantastic scenary. Today, more than 40 years after his birth, I decided to pay tribute to him by creating a very complex and demanding MOC in various respects. Making the Castle in minifigure scale was practically impossible, but even the micro-scale would have been a risky undertaking but ... once again I decided to test myself and above all ... have fun! The moc rests on two 48x48 stud baseplates, everything is done in microscale based on the images of the film. The Castle reports some fairly faithful sections while others have been invented such as the east side of the castle which is never seen in the entire duration of the film. I wanted to bring back the basics as seen in this image: I have reproduced the most important things for a complete scenario: the castle in its entirety, the section of the village on the back, the iconic aqueduct and the clock tower with the walls of the ancient castle. Studying this whole setting was as difficult as it was rewarding. But I wasn't happy like that ... I also wanted to make moving parts! And that's why I invented a mechanism that moves the following things: 1) the windmill on the front 2) the motorized aircraft that the Count uses to enter the Castle or Lupin to escape 3) an intermittent light that turns on in the rear entrance of the castle 4) the tilting corridor that connects the castle to the prison tower 5) the hands of the clock tower All these functions are connected to each other and therefore with a single lever they are operated simultaneously! In the next few days I will make a video presentation of the moving parts. The castle can be divided into several blocks and the base can also be divided in two, for easy transport. The realization of this work took me more than 5 months of work and has about 8700 pieces. On the base alone, there are almost 1500 tiles 1x2 trans light-blue! NIBARIKI, Hayao Miyazaki's Citroën 2CV My latest creation is a tribute to Hayao Miyazaki, Japan's greatest animation director and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, best-loved of all the Japanese animation studios. I had already written in the past how his films and his stories often inspired my creations, especially in terms of atmosphere and environments. Back in 1998, Hayao Miyazaki designed and built a house for his production company, called Nibariki. This house is located nearby Studio Ghibli's main building. Nibariki means 2 horsepower in Japanese and the name is a clear tribute to the beloved Citroën 2CV that the artist has been driving for more than forty years. Above you can see both Mr. Miyazaki's new office and his Citroën 2CV. And of course our beloved masterful storyteller too. Miyazaki bought his first 2CV as a university student in the early 1960s. It was a right-hand-drive model, imported from the U.K. and painted bright yellow. A 2CV first appeared in Miyazaki's first feature-length film, 1979's The Castle of Cagliostro. An action-adventure tale involving a mischievous gentlemen thief, the well known Lupin III, and featuring multiple car chases, including the heroine, Clarisse, escaping in her 2CV. Miyazaki's current Citroën is a 1987 2CV 6 painted in light gray and is exactly like the one you see in my latest creation.

Here's an another character from Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga, Sergeant-in-arms Mito. This was pretty basic build with some challenge on the arms and the helmet. My newest addition to Nausicaä MOC series, the title character herself! This is based on Hayao Miyazaki's 7-part comic Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I also built Nausicaä's Eftalian rifle and fox-squirrel Teto. Nausicaä also has her ceramic knife on her belt. More on Cyclopic Bricks.

My second creation from Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga, Princess Kushana of Torukmenia: The scale mail is the main gimmick here. I first tried to build it using 1x1 plates with tooth, but it didn't work out. Fortunately cheese slopes worked fine and I had plenty of them. The cape was rather challenging too, as dark red isn't the most common of LEGO colors and it got heavy and hard to balance. But it seems to work now. Watercolor cover art of volume 3 was the main reference material here (The comic is in black and white). More stuff on my blog. Enjoy.

Here's my newest Bricks of Character build, Lord Yupa, the mightiest swrodsman of Fukai, from Hayao Miyazaki's impressive Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind comic (or the movie). I let the cape to cover the arms for more dramatic effect. The colors are based on my own mental images, as the comic is in black and white. I also built a little base with some spores of Fukai. Here's the results of one-year project of building Savoia S-21 flying boat from Hayao Miyazaki's Porco Rosso, my favourite film ever. It took four BL orders and several dozens of hours. Miniland scale was perfect with the engine I began with, and it made it possible to build the pilot, the pig itself, to the cockpit. I also threw up an angled base to make the display more dynamic.
