  1. Hey everyone, I would like to share two of my latest space MOCs, the NASA Mars exploration rovers Perseverance and Curiosity. Both are built in 1:45 or minifig scale. I'm super exited for the Technic set, but I thought it would be fun to have a smaller version that can comfortably live on my desk as well. Here is Perseverance and Ingenuity, the first interplanetary helicopter that traveled to Mars with the rover in 2021. And here is Curiosity, using its ChemCam, a Laser/spectrometer instrument that analyzes the composition of rocks.     [MOC] Mono Jet 2.0

    Rove the surface of Mars in the luxurious Mono Jet 2.0! This new and improved version of the Mono Jet that was used during the Lego Space Federation's first manned mission to Mars is over twice as big as the original and ten times more powerful! Get yours at your local rover dealership today! This is my contribution to this year's Febrovery and a remake of the vintage Life on Mars set. It was the only LoM set I ever got, but I liked it so much that I got two of it. On the back I added a ladder for the driver to enter/exit the vehicle. Also, note that I even used the updated version of the control panel tile. The engine's turbine can spin and the radar dish can be aimed up. The wheel's diameter was increased from 5 studs to 10 and that of the engine from 3 to 6 while keeping the same overall look. The whole vehicle is balanced and can be rolled around just like the original. The driver's side is now a lot more spacious and has more details such as a windscreen, a spotlight, and extra controls. I expanded on the original greebles with small parts and stickers. Thanks for reading. Did you have this set? What do you think of this remake?
  3. This is a project MOC I've been working on during my evenings and weekends for about 5 months. I really tried to cram in all the features I thought would be cool. The rover weighs just short of 3kg, has 11 motors, over 4 meters of pneumatic hose. It's controlled with two remote controls. Getting all those features with limited parts and tight space constraints was a huge challenge Main Functions: 4W Drive, Steering Switch between crab and 4-wheel steering "Solar Panel" unfold/fold Crane up/down, left/right, extension/retraction, "pincer" Cargo bay door open/close Pneumatic airlock Fully RC Other small stuff: Rotating satelite dish Detailed cabin Independent suspension on all wheels Two servos each control two pneumatic functions Design process I started with the chassis, and moved on from there. Driving and steering worked a lot better before it put on all the weight! I had to plan ahead for everything I wanted to add and how it would fit together, which got really complicated so I had to start drawing out the connections. I basically had one drawing for how the modules physically fit together, one for the pneumatics connections, and one for the electronics. Even things like the lengths of the cables would determine which battery I could hook them up to, and every single battery connection and remote control button is in use. I used a few clever tricks to give motors more than one function. For example, each pneumatic pump is also a switch, depending on the direction it spins, using a design I borrowed from youtube. Each servo motor controls two switches each, because by design it was possible to make functions opposites of each other. The pneumatics engage in order of easiest to most difficult, so there are some rubber bands to set the order of activation. E.g. the up/down motion of the crane is paired with the storage lid. Improvements There are a lot of possible improvements that could be made, but I'm eager to move on to the next project and I'm happy enough with it already. Here's what I would change: Less functions overall. My line of thought when I started this project was "ooh I'll make everything with pneumatics because they're cool, and make it all remote control, and add crab steering because why not, and etc etc". But then it really dragged on forever. Next time I'll keep it small and simpler. Especially now that I've ticked most of my idea boxes No / fewer remote-control pneumatics switches. I did it, it's possible, but it takes up a lot of space and often doesn't work so well More robust steering (and no crab steering). The crab steering takes up like a third of the space and adds a ton of weight, and doesn't work very well. After trying it myself, I'm even more impressed by Madoca's shaman If a vehicle, all wheel drive For something so heavy and high torque like this, i'll definitely keep each driveline on separate batteries. Having two drivelines (left and right) improved the performance a lot, but since I needed every single battery output I moved all motors to the same battery, which killed performance I'll probably avoid exteriors and paneling — I'm not that great at it and it just adds weight Inspiration The idea and inspiration came from Eurobricks mars mission contest (ZeroBricks, Samolot, Kubic5), Simon stallenhag's artwork, and image searches for mars rover concept art I'll take more (and higher quality) pics of it as I take it apart, just need to wait for a free day with good lighting!   5. Good time, everyone. It is actually a really good time to Iive in. With all this historical events like yesterday's landing happening around us. To celebrate the successful landing of Perseverance, I've created this Lego technic model of Marsian rover. I've tried to recreate as much detail as possible. because one of the goals was not just to make Lego rover, but a good educational model, which can be used to show people how the real one works, what instruments it has on board and which experiments they will help to conduct. So,the video serves the same purpose - to be entertaining and a bit informational. I hope, you'll like it. And if you liked this video, please share it with others, because science popularization is a good thing to do! Also, tell if you want, do you have such ticket to mars, like in the video?   6. Robust working 1:12 RC model of the 6x6 rocker-bogie mobility system used in Mars rovers Perseverance and Curiosity... Tons of play value. Works well over most neighborhood surfaces and terrains, but sometimes gets stuck in loose sand. What you put on top is up to you. NB: The NASA rovers are 6x6x4 platforms, with 6 wheels, all 6 driven, and the 4 corner wheels steered. At 1:12 scale, steering individual wheels with LEGO motors is out of the question. So this model is necessarily a 6x6x0 platform — but one with reasonably effective skid steering. Several years ago, made a pretty faithful working 1:12 model of Curiosity with more emphasis on visual realism than on mobility system performance. The current model vastly outperforms the old one... Purist alert: SBrick RC receiver, non-LEGO elastics used to suppress wheel spread.

    [MOC] Caronte spaceship

    This is my entry for the Lego Ideas "Moon to Mars" contest https://ideas.lego.com/challenges/a289cd61-c960-4364-a1a8-42da645a4fe6/application/ff3e793f-c099-4c20-aef0-4612f4e53ab8 Caronte, a spaceship assembled in orbit around Moon to transport a crew to Mars and provides all necessary to create the first ground base on the red planet.. Caronte by Rusty B. I used a "capsule" design, with a pair of dome on each living module to have a good light source.. in the middle of the ship there is a working rotating system usefull to create the artificial gravity on the floor of the living modules. During the journey, the crew can live inside them easly.. Caronte by Rusty B. The spaceship is mdular, because when arrives near Mars, the modules will be undocked from the ship main structure and will be send on the planet landing on the surface using parachutes... Caronte by Rusty B. The crew lands on surface inside the Command pod / Rover and assembles the landed modules to create the ground base.. there are also two containers with inside solar panels, connection wires, a accumulation battery, a parabolic dish antenna and the rover wheels, that will be mounted on the Command pod to trasform it in a rover.. Caronte by Rusty B. The command pod / Rover has a command seat to drive the spaceship/rover, a second seat with computer and a back space to transport things.. Caronte by Rusty B. The base itself is playable with the opening roofs, to let play inside with the crew minifigures.. list of modules: - Airlock: Caronte by Rusty B. The Airlock helps the crew to enter and exit the base, balancing the internal atmosphere and contains the spacesuits for the external surface walk.. - Crew living module: Caronte by Rusty B. The main living module, with beds for crew, lamps on them, a recreation computer and space to keep personal objects.. - Science module: Caronte by Rusty B. In this living module the crew works, making experiments with Mars rocks, analyzing the scansions made with rover... there are a main desk with a laptop and microscope, rotating seat, a space with lab instrumentations, a drill to analyze rocks, and the infirmary, with all need to heal the crew.. - Greenhouse module: Caronte by Rusty B. This living module provides the food for the sustenance of the crew, during the space travel and on the ground... with a mix of traditional and idroponic colture, the plants grow and produces vegetables and fruits.. - Cargo bay: Caronte by Rusty B. In this container there are all the equipments to make the ground base operative.. directional solar panels, a accumulation battery, wires to connect the panels to the battery to the base itself, and a parabolic dish antenna for the communication between the base and the control base on the Moon or the Earth.. - Wheels bay: Caronte by Rusty B. I used only existing parts in existing color... but probably i've made some mistakes... i will re-check all the colors, and if i will find some errors, they can be resolved easly without changing any shape particular or details...   10. Hi! I can't miss the contest about Mars colonization :) My first idea was to create scientific vehicle to gather interesting objects on Mars surface. I take two Xerion tires, two more.. and I've stopped when all 16 Xerion tires were placed on my table. The transmission was very simple but steering system would be very complex. Suddenly I've remembered that I have many sport plans on this summer, and I simply have not enough time to finish this monster. Ok, let's build something smaller :) As far as I know, the first stage of colonization is complete due to this strange machine: Now we can find many roads, tunnels and construction places on Mars. My new model will deliver materials from spaceports to construction places and storages. The first prototype will have 6 wheels and AWD for high performance. Now I'm waiting for nuclear reactor for my vehicle :) To be continued...
  11. For Mission to Mars I decidd to build more of a classical machine - a six wheeled rover. I was heavily inspired by the upcoming Mars 2020 mission (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_2020) and wanted to integrate a drone inside the model. First thing to build were the foldable Rocker-bogie suspension arms, which is unfolded with pneumatics Each bogie featurs a steerable front wheel which is steered using a worm gear mated to a small turntable. Drive power is carried through the turntable to the front wheel. The rear wheels are on their own bogie and are driven by a combiantion of Cv and universal joints: A longitudinal differntial is used on each drivetrain which allows for the speed differences between front and rear wheels when steering. Differential is especially required when steering at 90 degree steering angle, since the rear wheels do not turn at all. A driven differential is used to level the both sides of the suspension arms: Differential allows for the movement of suspension and keeps the body leveled. A single M motor is used to adjust the leveling angle via a worm gear. Suspension in action: In order to unfold the rover, a pneumatic compressor was installed near the front of the body: The same compressor also powers 4 small pneumatic cylinders which open up the tops sides of the rover: A large actuator lifts the base of the 3D camera (placeholder for Wi-Fi camera) on the top and reveals the propeller "drone" inside the rover: Since most rovers include some kind of an arm to dig and check samples, I decided to equip mine with claws. They are able to pick up and lift with the use of a single M motor: And finally the rover can launch the propeller drone using an RC motor powered by BuWizz: Here is the final wrap up of the features and characterisics: 38 x 25 x 15 cm when folded 41 x 25 x 57 cm when unfolded Weighs 1800 grams Powered by 5M, 2L and one RC motor Controlled by 2 BuWizzes Independent all wheel drive with longitudinal differentials Rocker-bogie suspension Pneumatic unfolding Raisable 3D camera arm - placeholder for a WiFi camera Leveling mechanism Drone launcher Working claws Unlimited steering angle And a quick video of the rover in action:

Of course first ideas were of the movies "Martian", "Avatar", and "Interstellar", and the idea of building a spaceship seemed exiting. Therefore, i made a sketch of a VTOL transport ship: However building a freighter or a spacestation didn't exite me so much afterall (absolutely nothing to do with my unfinished tc15 plane ) so the next obvious idea was a rover. A human-manned one of course. Seeing that the currents WIPs were using wheels, I had a quick browse through lego sets of space/sci-fi themes and quickly found the Exo-Force 8118. It had a combination of double tracks in front and a single wheel in back that got me interested, as it was unusual and cool-looking, so this sketch came to life: It was originally planned to use brick-built tracks on front but small track links with turntables for central wheels should work. Most probably double offroad motorcycle tyres on rear (better start saving up for PP wheels duh). Obviously doubly buggy motors with 1.667:1 reduction + nuclear reactor BuWizz to power this thing. The Martian rover "Pilgrim" is a heavy multi-role vehicle designed for deep exploration of Mars, built by the Lego Space Agency, it has unique characteristics. is an AWD rover equipped with an efficient suspension system, designed for a crew of 2 or 3 astronauts, who can access or descend through a pressurization chamber, in fact the internal cabin has its own pressurized atmosphere compared to the Martian atmosphere outside the vehicle. The rover is powered by fuel cells, batteries and high efficiency photovoltaic panels, guaranteeing a theoretically unlimited autonomy. The rover is equipped with a telescopic arm for collecting materials that are deposited in an independent container. Also on the front there is a second and smaller telescopic arm, with a digging, extracting and study function. Still on the front we find a useful winch, just in case. This rover has a wide range of tools for the analysis of the Martian soil and for communications: in front of it we find a photopolarimeter, a magnetometer, a composite infrared spectometer. On the upper part we find a UHD color / infrared close range camera, an radiation assessment detector, antennas for long and short frequency communications, satellite dish, a UHD color / infrared long range camera, and an atmospheric / meteorology package. Finally, the rover also has a rear tow hitch to allow the hooking of special trailers. The module is a small laboratory equipped with optical microscope, spectrophotometer, computer, incubation room / cold room, stove / sink, a bed, to increase the habitability. The mobile laboratory module is energy self-sufficient thanks to photovoltaic panels and batteries, and has replaceable air reserve for 3 days. It is also equipped with communication systems. It has a mobile refillable cartridge containing the drill rigs pushed deep by a mechanical hammer at the top of the apparatus. The speed of descent and perforation can be varied according to need. The system is completely independent and manoeuvrable from the safety of the rover.   14. The topic is updated with detailed review: Hi! I’m glad to show you my new MOC made for Lego and Volvo contest. The task was “Build construction equipment of the future”. My little pet was designed special for Mars developing. Artificial intelligence allows this machine to perform different operations simultaneously. This monster replaces excavator, loader, tunneler, dozer. It can be used for road construction, tunnel boring, preparation of construction sites and many other tasks. All-around lighting system and cameras form 3D vision of the surrounding scene in a wide electromagnetic spectrum. Because of low solar irradiance on Mars the machine is powered by a compact nuclear reactor. Model features: 100 x 36 x 45 cm, weight - 7.4 kg. The model contains 16 motors. 1. Chassis - All-track drive (4x XL-motor) - Independent steering for crab mode up to 90 degrees and zero turning radius (4x M-motor) - Central pylon has an automatic leveling system. The tilt sensor is the weight on a pendant. If lengthwise tilt occurs the weight turns the motor on (buggy motor, I just have no wires for PF motors). The motor is interfaced with four linear actuators which level the superstructure - Central pylon has two co-axial independent turntables for different equipment 2. Loader - 360 degrees rotation (M-motor) - Boom lifting mechanism (L-motor) - Boom extension with synchronized counterweight movement (mechanical binding, M-motor) - Bucket loading and unloading (M-motor) 3. Tunneler - 360 degrees rotation (M-motor) - Boom tilting mechanism (L-motor) - Drilling head has five types of movement (XL-motor). The central part rotates fast in forward direction, the second part – in opposite direction, the third part – slowly in forward direction, eight additional cutters rotate in perpendicular plane. In addition, the whole drilling head unit moves in a reciprocating manner like a puncher - Because of absence of liquid water on Mars I suggest to use a huge vacuum cleaner to remove dust from drilling (you can see six working propellers near the drilling head) All the functions have remote control except for the leveling system – it operates automatically.   16. Hey everyone, The people who know me know that I do always stuff with Lego trains. While I'm designing a fully automated container terminal, I want to upload some non-train related animated episodes. Since some of the scenes will take place on the surface of Mars, I need to build a Martian surface display. But I lack time and eye for detail so I came up with the idea of making an LDD design contest of it. If you are interested in participating, have a look at the video below!
  17. Hi folks! Year 2090. The colonization of the planet Mars is a reality. To develop an autosufficent civilization is important to find a solution to recreate the flora in the planet. So, here it is the botanical research center. It consist in a laboratory, four greenhouses (temperate forest, tropical forest, crops and fruit plants), a control room, a meeting room and some services. Each minifig colour represent its division: - green: laboratory; - blue: supervisor; - red: forests greenhouses; - yellow: crops; - black: fruit plants greenhouse; - white: technics; - grey: director. The model it is not a 100% neo classic space theme, I've changed some colour scheme due to the lack of yellow trasparent pieces; also, we're in Mars not on the moon! ;) P.s. the spherical classic space logo is a recreation of ones that I found on google. I've just changed the colour and added a plant, to represent the research division.   19. This LEGO set is inspired by upcoming human missions to Mars. According to some present projections we can expect first humans on the Mars surface sometimes after 2030. In this LEGO Ideas project, 4 crew members of the Mars orbital vehicle ‘’Elijah 1’’ are orbiting the Mars and making preparations for landing on the Mars surface to collect some soil and rock samples. As the Mars gravity is only 0,376 G and the air pressure is avg. 600 Pa the vehicle doesn’t need ablation shield and the fuel requirement for descent to Mars surface and ascent back to Mars orbit is much lesser than one required for breaking from Earth’s gravity. The command and orbital module is fully detachable from fuel tanks and rocket engines so you can use them for various space missions. The command module has the space airlock so the astronauts can exit the module and make needed repairs on the vehicle if needed. This set can easily be combined with other LEGO Mars sets.

    Martian Defenders

    I originally wanted to do something on these lines for the Tiles and Bricks new faction contest, but didn't get my act together soon enough. The red gun is from the SY Green Lantern set, all other parts are Lego. Mars is of course inhabited, and these marines are the guys who are cleaning the solar cells on the curiosity rover. If it's not them, who do you think does it?
