  1. Recently, there was a contest on Lego Ideas to come up with a futuristic construction machine. I came up with this, a truck mounted knuckle boom crane with some interesting party tricks. I apologize in advance for the wall of text, as I would like to actually explain some of the details behind the design, because I did not have enough room on the actual entry page to do so. First off, why a truck? why not make some kind of dedicated carrier? My reasoning is that having commonality with standard haulage trucks would be beneficial to operating costs, and then there is the fact that in some countries mobile cranes are not allowed on the highway, so this gets around that as well. Also, I had wanted to build a truck like this for some time before the contest was announced, so that's a personal reason. Originally, I had wanted to use the cab of 42079, but the contest dictated otherwise, so I made my own cab and chassis. The crane I based this off of would be the gigantic Cormach 575000A X, as seen here: However, I do not like the way the crane looks, mounted at the back of the truck, so my version has the crane reversed, so the crossed outriggers and crane base are behind the cab. I also added an additional axle, bringing the total number of axles to seven, to reduce axle loads. As for the truck itself,ETS stands for Electric Truck System, the line this truck would be sold under. I chose a long nose design in order to provide space for a hybrid range extender, and an extensive cooling system for the electric motors. There is also an equipment rack behind the cab, in order to hold various crane parts, as well as more cooling systems for the motor controllers, and a bleed off module like a locomotive, for when the truck is under regenerative braking. As I mentioned, the truck is electric, and has all wheels driven. Unlike a standard truck, their are much lower transmission losses, and each additional axle powered only adds more horsepower and torque. Normally, the truck only has two axles driven, but any number can be driven as needed, for difficult terrain or starting a heavy load. To improve safety, the truck has an extensive network of cameras positioned at all angles, instead of mirrors. This eliminates blind spots, as the truck would have massive ones ordinarily. Another feature of the cab is the fact that the steering wheel and other controls can be swapped left to right as need be, for when the truck travels to a country that drives on the wrong side of the road. Another innovative cab feature is the VR crane cab, a fully outfitted driving station in the sleeper cab of the truck. This allows the crane to be remotely controlled from withing the cab, useful for inclement weather. This system already exists, Hiab has a version of it, but I take it much farther. The primary crane cameras are at the end of a boom, in much the same location as a regular cab would be. This gives workers on the ground something to look at while interacting with the crane. With full outriggers and full extension, the crane reaches high. Unfortunately, the pneumatic functions of this model do not work as well as I'd like, particularly the outriggers. As a futuristic function, the crane is actually dismountable, and can drive around on its own set of retractable tracks. The tracks are also mounted on a platform that can be raised and lowered, which allows ground clearance to be changed. This configuration allows the crane to be much lower, and far more compact, allowing the crane to fit in spaces the truck could not, such as indoors. Since the crane is also electric, it can operate inside buildings without exhaust problems. For additional range, the crane can either plug in to an appropriate wall socket, or receive power from the truck via a cable. I have seen a number of tracked knuckle boom cranes, but they all require their own trailer. This configuration would allow for far greater speed and versatility. Without the crane, the truck could also be used as a flatbed, to move items around. The crane has an additional normal remote control, like most knuckle boom cranes. Also a part of the interface is the warning beacon on top of the superstructure. It is a series of red, yellow, and green lights. Most cranes have a setup like this, red means overload, yellow means approaching max capacity, and green means normal. I also added a warning light on each side. These would be activated when the crane is under VR control, to indicate that the crane may move suddenly. Another idea that is hard to get across in Lego is the fact that the crane is equipped with sensors, that would prevent the crane from hitting walls and especially power lines. I wanted to add a fly jib, but due to the outriggers, that was not an option. With a fly jib, this machine would be able to do the work of a truck crane, a crawler crane, a tower crane, and a heavy tractor, all in one unit. The truck chassis itself can actually split in two, allowing the truck to operate as a heavy tractor. Stored at the back of the equipment rack is a retractable fifth wheel, which can be extended when the crane is dismounted. Getting a steering system that could be disconnected was hard, and unfortunately struggles with the full crane on the truck. And here we have the Volvo ETS 770 on its own, without the crane. As a summary of the functions, this model has: Manual: Steering Track unit fold/unfold Slewing Track Slewing Chassis disconnect Two boom extensions Winch Pneumatic: Crane elevation 1 Crane elevation 2 Folding outriggers Extending outriggers Lowering outrigger feet Raising crane body Locking to truck These are the five entry pictures, I plan on taking more later , showing off more details of the crane and truck.   2. Hey everyone, first post here and kinda of a new to tecnhic. So, keeping things short, I started work on a "Flatbed crane truck", and I would like to hear some suggestions about it. I am thinking on adding a small crane to the back of it keeping its open area. I am having some difficulties with the steering sistem and where to put the "fake motors".   3. I' ve decided to make an alternative model for 42054 CLAAS XERION 5000 TRAC VC set. I' ve wanted to design something different from all those excellent c models already made, so I made a truck capable of off-road conditions, with crane and many other functions. The result: Functions: rear axle drive with 4 piston engine steering live axle suspension side outriggers cabin tilting rear PTO (power take off) crane arm rotation crane arm 1st stage elevation crane arm 2nd stage elevation grabber closing/opening Please watch the video to see this machine in action and for more details. This model is powered by one m motor with rotation direction selection. It powers main selector, crane selector. and PTO. Main selector switches between worm gear powered functions and arm rotation. When worm gear functions are selected, there is another switch to choose between outriggers and cabin tilting. The crane selector switches between 1st and 2nd stage elevation. I had to use some interesting (I think) solutions because of parts selection in 42054 set: Piston engine There are no piston engine parts in the set, so i made them from some connectors. You can see it working in the video. Suspension There are no shock absorbers or wishbones too. So I' ve made a suspension based on twisting axles: Every wishbone is suspended independly. 3 of those connected to axle make a well-working long travel soft off-road suspension: Grabber There was a grabber in original set, but when building the grabber I've already used the worm gear for more important functions, so I' ve designed a different locking mechanism: Turning the green axle makes the red grabber frame move up and down and becouse of engaging the blue knob gear with h-frame opening and closing blue grabber.   4. Building Lego Technic creations and posting videos is a common bussiness for every MOC designer. Coming up with small and large inventions and sharing them is a continuing activity that never bores. However, there is one common dream, one ultimate goal that every Lego enthousiast silently dreams about: to design a professional Lego model. Several builders do what is called 'commissioned work'. Building a Lego Technic model and selling whatever it became to a company or private party. In general, Lego Technic custom models are loved by non-Lego enthousiasts because 'it works'. Several years ago, I got the unique chance to do commissioned work because a company CEO's brother accidentially saw my scale model. I first refused to sell my beloved Luctor, but two years later the one metre model was ready I got positive reviews about the looks, but the most comments were: "wow, it really works". Somehow this model must have been leaked inside 'CEO-land', as one year ago I was asked by the Hoeflon company (based in the Netherlands) to build a give-away Lego Technic model, to be used as a business gift. How cool is it to not receive the 32st boring USB drive, but a complete custom Lego Technic model.. The company builds mini cranes that go inside buildings to do heavy lifting. My task was to build a scale model of a machine that is already very compact in real life. As a result, I present a 1:14 scale model of the Hoeflon C6 crane. (please note I'm NOT paid by Hoeflon in any way, the whole story is just about how things happened and to explain the link with reality). The crane is my smallest MOC for a long time. It was really a challenge to fit all the functions inside the cramped body. The functions are: Track widening Boom rising/lowering Boom extension Fly Jib Rotating superstructure Friction winch Self-locking outtriggers Variable angle outtriggers with over 90 degree range These functions happen in a Lego Technic model of a smaller volume than the 9391 Technic crane set. Over the years I had lost some creativity to build small models so this one was a real challenge. I'm happy with the current setup but who knows.. The model is delivered with black or LBG tracks. LBG track links are slightly more expensive and this quickly adds up when 100+ cranes need to be made. To be fair, I find the looks of the 9391 stunning for the low part count. However, as I show in the video, it does not really work as a crane. The above photo shows the comparable sizes of both models. The front view. Please note the relative widht of the tracks: They are each 3L while the vehicle width is 7L. The resulting chassis is one stud in width! To widen the tracks, the crane has a shifting axle system with half bushes as stoppers. The final result is not the strongest system, but the crane at least has the function! The top view shows why this crane is called the 'Spider Crane': the outtriggers can be seen as the legs. The great thing about building such small models is that every part can be seen and every part has its function. There are very few 'unused studs'. This crane has a 3-section boom. In transport shape, this crane is 12 cm high so all of it should be folded. Therefore it looks like a proper mess when folded in. It is a common known fact that Hoeflon cranes will lift their own weight, because one crane should be able to lift another crane into a cellar. Hopes were low for the scale model as it is fully made from plastic Lego pieces. Under these loads, they will simply bend. Using the correct crane position and the winch, I got one crane to lift the other - just. On this small scale, I could not use the same strong structure from the real C6, so it was a nice result that my building resulted in something with the same strenght. The crane in full extended mode. The shape changes dramatically when the boom is unfolded. It reaches a maximum height of 42 cm. This model is meant as a business gift. This box was developed by a third party and it looks great. It is just big enough to contain the 425 parts and the A5-sized building instructions. I spent really hours drawing a 3D model and creating building instructions with lPub. By doing it yourselves, it becomes clear how much time goes into it.. The agreement with Hoeflon was: me delivering the PDF, Hoeflon doing the printing. I'm really pleased with the end result. To conclude, this MOC shows that you don't need a lot of parts to build a fun Technic model. I have many parts now compared to five years ago, but all of it is useless when someone knocks on the door to ask for a small scale model. This model also shows the problem of modern Technic sets from the store shelves. They are built large, very large. The 8265 Wheel loader is an example. It is enormous, while having less functions than this small crane that will fit into its bucket. Now the size may speak to the inner desire of the (hu)man to posess big things, but personally I like finesse and elegance over size. It is my big hope that TLG sees this in time, otherwise the awesomeness of new Lego Technic sets will fade away. The video
  5. Hi to everybody! I'm here to present my new Moc. I started building this crane truck about 6 months ago with the main idea of solving the problems related to a failed attempt of a crane for my previous truck. IMG_1608 by Lucio Switch, su Flickr Starting from the cab...despite the undeniable resemblance to the cab of the dump truck (with a bit of the tractor truck), it has slightly different dimensions, and the add of some new details/functions, forced me to revise it completely. In fact, in addition to the "standard" opening doors, this time, as on real trucks, the cab is suspended, while maintaining the tilting function and the working steering wheel and the front grid is openable. Moreover the seats are pneumatically suspended via 2 (1+1) 1x5 pneumatic cylinders. The chassis has the tractions on the 2 last axles, they are driven by 4 XL Motors and uses 2 Servo Motors to steering the first two axles (with different turning radius). The first two axles use independent suspensions. In this case I was inspired by the Mod of the chassis of my Tractor Truck done by Efferman ... that has a perfect shape for a fake v8. On the back there are 2 live axles (with a total of 24 hard shock absorbers). Between the first two axles there are two small pneumatic pumps moved by two L Motors. In addition to that, on the chassis are present 2 Li-Po Battery, 5 Leds for lights and 2 SBricks. Behind the cabin there is the base of the crane, it contains the front stabilizers, extendable via a M motor (connected to one SBrick), 6 pneumatic valves, moved by an M motor each, 4 IR receivers to control the 6 valves motors plus 2 other M motors, one to rotate the crane and one for the winch. The 4 receivers take power from a port of an SBrick. Finally the crane ... well, the classic design of this type of crane with the upper arm offset (as on 8258 for instance) built on this scale, gave me big problems twisting the whole structure ... and a lot of headaches. One day I came across by chance in a truck with a Cormach crane, it presented a unique design that would solve the twist problem. So inspiring to this design, I have developed my crane, which consists of a telescopic upper arm (extension via 2x 1x11 pneumatic cylinders) supported by two side arms moved by 2+1 2x11 pneumatic cylinder each. It isn't able to lift heavy loads, but it works and, considering the masses involved, I'm fine with that. Now some numbers: Length: 86,4cm 108studs Width: 24,8cm 31studs, 28cm 35studs with mirrors Height: 39,2cm 49studs Weight: 8.6 kg Total number of parts: 8000 PF elements: M motor: 9 L Motor: 2 XL Motor: 4 Servo Motor: 2 PF LED: 5 Lipo Battery: 2 ..and a couple of wire extensions Pneumatic Elements: Small pumps: 2 1x5 Cylinder: 2 Medium Cylinder old: 4 Medium Cylinder new: 2 1x11 Cylinder: 2 2x11 Cylinder: 6 Valve: 6 ..and several meters of pipes. Due to circumstances beyond our control, I was forced to transfer my Lego room in the basement, comfortable although perhaps a bit rustic but not directly connected with my apartment. This, coupled with the fact that my free time has been drastically reduced, has led me to review my usual workflow. So this is my first model built before digitally and then physically. This way allowed me to use better my free time and to select and pick up only the needed parts to build, reducing drastically the mess in the living room. Also part of the work for the BI is already done, I'll done them for sure, but I don't have idea when they will be ready. I'm afraid that it will be a huge job! I hope you like it!
  6. I am working on a creation of combining the 42070 6x6 tow truck and the 42042 crawler crane by putting the crane on the back of the truck. It is mostly complete, and I'm just detailing it at this point. There is only one problem with it, though. I made the crane fully automized by removing all of the gears in the back half of the crane and put motors there instead. I also had to move the large turnable rotating piece on the bottom of the crane forward and matched the teeth on the edge with the tan 12t bevel gear. It turns, but the teeth slip and it turns a little too fast, which I couldn't solve. I removed all of the gears for turning and the turnable and tried putting in this: and connected it to some gears to gear it down, but it didn't even turn under the weight of the crane. Any ideas to make it work? Also, an L motor is powering it
  7. Afte the success of the Jaguar XJR19 Le Mans prototype (of which I will still to the photos of the complete model, and instructions) I decided to do a new WIP. Again it's a model I've prototyped over the last month and will now do the second, hopefully better buildup. And again, I will use a photo of an existing vehicle as my inspiration, but it won't be an exact scale model. I use the photo as inspiration and will deviate where needed for the functions (and it will be needed, because i want a 4-function switch box similar to 8258). It's this truck. It's called Foremost Delta 3 Wheeled Carrier and it seems to come in several configurations, one of which has the crane below. On this picture, it's not finished, because outriggers seem to be missing. Several other pictures of the same model show that it has one set of outriggers near the crane. My other source of inspiration will be set 42070. I want to make something with a similar size, which will be in a way "my own take on that set's theme", i.e. "off-road truck with crane". (That's all I will use from that set). So I'm thinking of something in the range of about 2000 pieces. (In practice though, it will always turn out to be more.) Another thing: the colors will be very different. My first prototype was obediently yellow, but when I arrived at the cabin I wanted to deviate a bit, so I threw some less-used colors in the mix, and went for Dark Turquoise with Black for the cabin, and consequently also for the crane and bed. The chassis will be Dark Gray and for the body I am torn between Yellow and Red (main reason being the colored axles I want to use, for example for the ladders). I will be copying the crane from 8258 (with different colors), because that one seems perfect for the scale and type. But everything else will be different. I will be using Tumbler wheels. The profile is not exact but the shape and size seems fine. Also, currently I have only 4, so I will temporarily be using someting else for the front (interestingly, the Porsche wheels have the same diameter and width). I started with two important modules: The one on the left is the 4-function gearbox and crane base, and the one on the right is the rear axle unit. What I like personally is how a 4-way gearbox and outriggers using the new gear rack pieces introduced in 42043 fit in a pretty compact module. Here's the gearbox unit from below. The dark-gray axle joiner is the motor input. I plan on using my newly acquired L-motor. Here's the rear-axles module: Each axle is mounted on two 1x5 suspension arms and two 1x6 links. These 4 keep the axle in place and nicely horizontal. The free ball-sockets near each wheel will connect to the springs. Also, as you see, with the parts used, doing this part in dark-gray seems impossible... Of course, the 15L beams will be replaced by the chassis. It will be a challenge to get this strong though, because the gearbox module has some gears in the way, so little room to connect things firmly. The functions I want to have: Manual steer and drive (so no RC) Electric crane rotation Electric crane first boom element Electric crane second boom element Electric outrigger horizontal deployment Manual outrigger vertical deployment (similar to many sets) Suspension It's not as impressive as 42070's six electric functions in three modes and four nice large-range outriggers, but instead of that, this will have suspension. Next up will be connecting the two modules, and doing the front axle and steering modules.

  9. Hi ! Here is my WIP for the TC6 contest. It's a transport truck with a palfinger crane on the back. My model have 4 powered motors. I use a gearbox, so i have 7 functions motorised. - Selection of operating mode (M-motor) Driving : - Drive (XL-motor) - Steer (M-motor) - Outriggers (M-motor) Handling : - UP arm (XL-motor) - Rotate arm (M-motor) - Open arm (M-motor) + fake engine and suspension When the gearbox is in neutral, it is possible to drive in hand with HOG. And small render with LDD. Very far from the quality of Blackbird.

  14. Container Crane Hi all, today I want to show some models I created for the exhibition „Fantasie und Technik“ in Abtsgemünd, Germany on 2./3. december 2017. All models were operated with only an EV3 Set(+1 small motor in one modelll), the motors and sensors have been plugged in just a few minutes from model to model, here the visitors could help. It was important to me that the mindstorms components are not hidden, visible and out,. to reveal their function. The models should show that it is also worth about the travelling robots to automate homemade models. There are almost no transmissions, which would unnecessarily complicate the whole thing, most everything is powered directly from the motor shaft. Most of the models could be operated with different programs. All were operated almost exclusively by the visitors. And here ist he container crane: I only used the mindstorms parts of sets 31313 (EV3 brick, 3 motors, 2 sensors). The container terminal provides two container spaces, a railway connection and a truck Here the part that controls the on/off of the claw. The four threads of the claw are summarized in a small sled and only one rope pulled by the motor. When the claw is up (black slide left) the touch sensor stops the motor. To sink the motor moves defined turns. The second unit is the trolley drive for right / left. Through the colored tiles on the chain the IR-sensor recognizes the position of the trolley (1st place, 2nd place, railway, truck) , the yellow tile is visible just below left The last element of the movement is the adjustment of the claw. To open the claw must be lifted with the outer threads, to close it with the inner wheels. This is done by simply extend of the lengtht oft he threads The trolley of the crane 3 The four ropes are on the left attached and can be adjusted by turning the blue pins, like guitar strings The claw with the four threads, if the two outer/upper carry the load the claw is open, if the two inner/lower carry the load it is closed There are two programs: one for the automatic operation, and one for the manual mode pressing the keys of the EV3-brick.   15. I would like to share my latest creation - 8x2 truck with crane. This is the picture that inspired me: I started with cabin and chasis and I was not sure what kind of truck I want in the end. I was sure about one thing - not to make overcomplicated build so 8x4 dump truck was on my mind for most of the time. But then I have seen a website with cranes and the one above is very nice so it was set. I love pneumatics so this was an obvious choice. I have of course took the picture as purely inspirational, this is not meant as exact copy. Features: 3 steered axles, each with different ratio and all of them with ackerman geometry - I just love the small ball joint hubs. 3rd axle drives fake V6 engine (1:3 ratio) cabin with openable doors, openable front grill and it can tilt to reveal engine extendable outridges (6 studs), all operated simultaneously by knob behind the cab and pneumatic foots. They can lift the whole truck but they bend under the weight. 3 section crane with extendable 3rd section and winch. The crane itself is quite powerful, the limit is the winch.   16. Hi there. For several day´s I was working on Nico71´s crawler crane which he made several years ago. Nico allowed me to show you that. I´ve made it in LDD only from his pictures. He never made instructions for it, only took several pictures of disassembled crane body. So I started step by step. And I´m proud to show you result. There is 4 motors in superstructure. XL for hook winch, M motor for rotating superstructure, another XL motor for main boom and M motor for luffing jib. Nico´s original crawler wasn´t motorized. So I´ve decided to add aditional L motors and AAA BBox with IR receiver. There was enough space for it. (and yes, that was supposed to sound like a early TV / radio drama intro. ) I took the "Old Fishing Store" Ideas set number 21310 and turned back the clock on it from a rundown fishing shop in the modern era to a modular 1920's supply depot for Johnny Thunder and his friends, also known as the Adventurers. I added a set 7596-style freight Crane that's a part of "Trash Compacter Escape" (a Toy Story 3 set from 2010). I revised the color scheme of the mainly yellow building instead of the original sand green, and removed a ton of the mixed bunch of colors that were used a "patch jobs" on the dock and building proper. I removed the roof and redid it completely to be brick-built with slopes instead of plates and tiles at an certain angle. I also stripped the many windows styles off and replaced them with a single type. I added a warehouse section to the lower floor by sending one of the walls about 16 studs back, allowing for storage space for various equipment not yet designed. The back wall of the building shows off the new wall art placed on the roof section of the building: a giant propeller from a ship of some kind. I also am going to use the "Great" and "West" printed parts for the sign out on the front of the building where the "Anton's bait shop" 4 x 2 tile originally was. The back wall still opens in two sections, but the inside is a rough estimate. Some parts I already have from my previous depot model from almost 1 1/2 years ago, such as the safe, radio and various maps. Also, the two freight loading doors actually open and shut quite nicely. The model comes apart into four sections, with the main roof, tower, tower roof, and main building + dock all separating from each other. The crane was totally copied from my previous depot model, which itself was duplicated and color-changed from the dark green / white one in the Toys Story 3 set I mentioned earlier. That's all I've got so far with the building (which is coming soon in real bricks)... any thoughts or ideas for this model? As usual, Comments, Questions, & Complaints are always welcome.   20. The Corrington Combat Pioneers had been busy since the Corrington party found the Myzek people. The pathway behind the falls was conducive to secluding a civilization from wild animals and the outside world, but it was not conducive to multiple trips back and forth. The Combat Pioneers built a larger pathway along the dangerous parts of the path at the base of the falls. They were then able to bring goods up the river in boats, and transport it by hand through the falls before transferring it to carts and mules to lead it down to Myzectlan. The only problem is they also had to divert the river to allow room for the pathway near the falls. One man's problem is Corrington's fun. The Combat Pioneers started a quarry on the nearby mountainside, and brought the cut rocks over to the top of the falls on sledges. They then used a massive crane and some mules to raise the rocks and place them in the river. Setting the massive rocks one at a time, they were able to divert the river over several minifigure feet. The river was also diverted into its overflow channel, thus enabling the pathway below to be outside the torrential downpour of the falls. Today we spot several WETEC soldiers carrying trade goods along the pathway, as two of the Combat Pioneers discuss whether the crane needs to be kept in place for any future repair work. They are also discussing the current plans to make an alternate path to Myzectlan in order to bypass the falls entirely. Notes: I felt my build for Challenge 5E needed some editing before I could license it and to make the future stories more believable. This build was the result. It won't count as a freebuild as it was just an edit, but it will be licensed as a large commerce. It's total surface area is 4842 studs with 6402 bricks used.   21. These models are heavily inspired by Whoward69's fleet of train cars, as seen on his Flickr feed and his instructions linked below. First up is a set off a crane wagon. I modified the original model model's instructions to include a longer base for the crane, and using newer parts to make it a bit more durable. The rear of the crane car should feature six of this print where the yellow 1 x 2 tiles are. The crane car can move side to side or up and down with two sets of ropes to either raise / lower the hook or operate the boom. Please NOTE: I don't have the exact measurements for the two strings as they wasn't listed in said instructions. However, I think two of this string here should be long enough. I also added a flatcar carrying train track for the crane to off-load. This Box Van was a Banana Van when I built from these instructions. I already have two boxcars in this form, and thought four more would be a good idea. This flat car was just a random addition to the train, with no real specific prototype. The brake van was mostly made from these instructions. I embellished the design with a couple of my own touches to keep it in line with the above-mentioned boxcars. I was inspired by the Lone Ranger "Constitution Train Chase" (set number 79111) and it's jail car to add tail lights to this car. This print should go where the black 1 x 2 tiles are under the rear windows.   22. Hi, it's been a long time since I posted a model. So here I am with another crane. I know that many people build them, but I really like this subject and I think I'm improving with every model. To begin with, I'm sorry for the quality of the photos - the weather has been bad for about a week and it doesn't seem to change. The axle setup and the outriggers are the same as in 8421. I used these stabilizers, because they don't require much space and work better then the ones I've previously used. Here is the list of functions, also visible on the renders below: -XL Motor geared 1:2.33 for drive. The third axle is driven with a differential and no suspension, so the off-road capabilities are minimal, but it drives well on flat surface -Servo for 6 wheel steering with correct angles -M Motor geared 1:40 for outriggers. They hold the model very well. When the batteries are full, they can lock themselves without any help -M Motor geared 1:168 using 56t turntable. It is equipped with four rollers made of wedge belt wheels, which is a big improvement over my previous cranes. It has no problems rotating with some load -L Motor geared 1:8.33 driving a single linear actuator for luffing. I didn't think it would be enough, but it does its job fine. The bad thing with using a ready-made actuator is the boom angle. It is only about 67 degrees, so it limits the amount of load the crane can lift -L Motor geared 1:24 + 1:2 with pulleys for winch. It is an overkill for this model, but I didn't have any more M Motors and the L has got a lot of attachment points. It could easily lift over 1 kg, but the crane itself limits it -M Motor for extending the boom. The motor is inclined to fit in the boom. It drives the rack via a u-joint and a worm gear. The boom has three sections and is based on the Grove GMK6400's excellent one I only have three IR Receivers, so luffing is controlled through a PF Switch located in the rear of the superstructure, but I forgot to include it on the renders. It is very easy to access and you don't have to hold the remote. I decided to put the battery box in the carrier for aesthetic reasons. I have just bought the rechargeable box, but it was not planned to be in this model. The box is a structural part of the build, but can also be removed by pulling out the connectors with chains. The model is lit up using 8 LifeLites LEDs with their battery just below the PF BB. All of them are in the cab and they give a nice effect. Lack of BB in the superstructure results in a big problem with counterweight. My previous crane had 0.75 kg of counterweight and this has none. It limits the lift capacity by a lot. The crane can lift 800 g on the front with retracted boom, 500 with boom retracted and superstructure slewed by 90 degrees and only about 100 g slewed and fully extended without swaying. The winch has no problems with over 1 kg, but with the values bigger than above the crane just leans over or puts a big stress on the turntable. You could probably lift more before tipping over entirely, but that's not what it's all about. The model has some manual functions. All doors open and the operator's cab can be lifted by hand. It uses a simple scissor lift and a manual lock to extend and tilt at the same time. Also there's a compartment in the rear behing some small rotor blades, which includes a fire extinguisher held by a pin. I had some space left, so I decided to put it there. The crane is equipped with many details, which for me really make the build. I have included all the lights, chains, beacons, exhausts, seats with armrests and headrests or an additional winch on the boom, which only sits on a friction axle pin, but adds to the looks when the crane sits on the shelf. Anyway, here is the gallery with some more pics. I can take more photos if you want. All of the functions work well and reasonably fast. The only slow one is the winch, but it would be harder to gear it up without an impact on the looks. I'm happy with the model and hope you'll like it too. Here is the video: I also have a link-only (don't want it on my main channel) video with some WIP photos. The build is just filled with wires. Apart from the stuff listed above it also has four extension wires. I went with the classic yellow color. For many people it's boring, but it is actually my first yellow Technic MOC. My two previous cranes were white and red because of the lack of parts. It matches the Mercedes star very well I'm happy with this MOC. I also fell in love with the 11 x 5 sloped panels :) Only things to change would be to move the superstructure backwards by a couple of studs and add pendular suspension on the driven axle.   23. Here is my latest creation!! The tracked crane! I recently bought a bucket and 2 l motors so I thought I would build a crane, logically . The crane goes up and down with a LA, and the bucket moves on a LA both connected to separate m motors. The drive is through direct driven l motors on tracks. This is in no way final, and I would like to make instructions for the final model. What do you think? better pics soon.
  24. Hi guys, Have a mod'd 42042 (Catweasal MOC) and then added more boom, larger tracks + extra counterweight. Decided to add a few more sheaves to assist the motor boom up with a load on the hook but am having trouble getting the sheaves to distribute the weight evenly across all 12 / 14 sheaves etc. I've made sure all the sheaves have free play in them and are not binding up..... also made sure to reduce the angle of the rope from the motor to the first sheave to 0 degrees so that there is no side pull on the sheaves. I was thinking maybe I need to grease the shaft and side of sheaves to reduce the friction further but now that I think of it, could it possibly be due to flex in the shaft / frame at both ends that loads up the sheaves unevenly? On the other hand when I had the sheave designed 4 wide but 2 rows on both sides (so 8 sheaves wide in theory), I still had the problem with the last few sheaves / ropes having no tension on them... Any ideas????
