    Plants in Jameston

After challenge 5, the Fontonajos have added further properties to their estates in Jameston (microbuilds to activate challenge rewards): C) Medium Plantation: Bees & Honey (hope this counts as a micro build; if it does not please let me know, and I will license this as a small plantation and come up with a real micro) The Myzec of Cascadia collect honey from wild bees as a sweetener for their foods and drinks on special occasions. Celestia, as the neighbouring island, has even more biological diversity. The businessmen they are known for, the Fontonajos have decided to have some honey bees imported from the old world, to recreate the excquisite in a controlled environment near Jameston on Celestia - and potentially the wild bees of the island might be attracted and both types of bees - if they are different in the first place - might interbreed eventually? B) Large Educational Property: Botanical Gardens In the rapidly growing settlement of Jameston on the island of Celestia, Juan Alfonso Fontonajo has opened a small Botanical Garden to display the wonderful flora of the island that he and others have discovered on their adventures deep into the jungle covered mountains of Celestia. A) Large Property of my choice: Cotton Plantation Near Jameston the Juan Fontonajo has setup a cotton plantation - and with the help of Corrish scientists has come up with an innovative irrigation system. In the middle of the concentric fields there is a well, and water is pumped up from that well into a very long tube that ranges all over the field, to automatically irrigate the whole width of the field. An ox is walking circles around the well all day to turn the tube, which is placed on stakes with wheels at the bottom - and the whole field is irrigated. Will that new technological advancement spread over all the Brick Seas?
  2. While adventurers have set out to find the most beautiful orchid in ancient temple ruins, very little is known about the origins of those ruins yet, et alone about the Celestian natives in general. Juan Alfonso Fontonajo and his companion have discovered a hill somewhere in the highlands of Celestia - and on top of that hill stands an ancient statue of a winged man riding a tiger. What is the history of this statue? Who have the natives of Celestia prayed to in former times? On the neighbouring island of Cascadia temples to the feline gods have already been discovered, deep in the jungles. But what is the connection between the cults and history that have been unveiled on Cascadia to that of Celestia? On Cascadia the Myzectlan still uphold their city as a refuge deep within a mountain vale, protected from the once (and potentially still today) maneating large carnivorous cats. But scientists like Montoya have set up a relationship to the natives of Cascadia, and researched their culture, their history and their doom. This has yet to happen on Celestia. And as the curious eye may or may not see, a native scout is closely watching Fontonajo's expedition already. Will he approve of Fontonajo approaching the strange altar on the hilltop? For now one difference seems to be obvious: While in Cascadia most shrines were hidden deep in the jungles - because of the secret and forbidden nature of the cult especially in its early days - this statue stands highly exposed on top of a hill for everyone to see. So how are the natives of Celestia? Are they like those on Cascadia? Do they emerge from the same ancient civilization, share the same blood and the same culture? Have all of them become primitive huntsmen? Or have they always been? Have they once lived on Cascadia, or vice versa? Or maybe those two peoples are not connected in any way, after all? Only time will tell, and only when scientists and adventurers have made their discoveries, written them down, made the connections between the puzzle pieces - only then will we finally know who and how the natives of Celestia really are - and why. For now it is most obvious that there must have been a religious cult involving large felines, at some point in the past at least. The altar is still in decent but not perfect shape, which may also be a result from the sun shining relentlessly at the rather dry hilltop. But who is the winged rider on the tiger's back? Is the tiger the worshipped one, or is it the humanoid with wings? Does the statue display a real hero, or rather a fictional divine being? What is the relationship between the two? And is it pure coincidence that a jaguar is drinking at the small pond at the foot of the hill? Surely other feline cats have recently been spotted on Celestia. But what is the releation between them and the inhabitants of the islands? An incident happened with a white tiger which was recently discovered and then killed shortly after. But are there also deep hostilities between the natives and the felines? Would the felines even attack wandering Halosians? Not even that is known yet. Only one thing seems certain for now: That Juan Alfonso Fontonajo and his company will continue their exploration of Celestia. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks a lot to @Ayrlego, @Lord Buckethead and @Bregir for your support and feedback during the construction of this MOC. I am happy to have the chance of exploring Celestia with you - and hopefully soon some others as well. The island and its natives bear some great potential which we have the great chance to develop together. The general colourscheme with lots of olive green, mixed with some dark green, has been inspired by @Gideon's fantastic entry to category C of the most recent challenge. The orchid is a copy of that from @Kai NRG's delayed yet wonderful entry to the challenge. Looking forward to all other MOCs for the Celestian Natives. :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  3. Seeing the natives of Celestia, hunting, somewhere in the inner regions of the island, it is rather hard to believe they were once the highly civilized ancient culture of which the ruins of huge temple complexes have recently been discovered on the island. Will Halosians soon find out more about both history and fate of the Celestians, or will the Halosians in their blind strive for colonial expansion keep ignoring the indigineous people of the islands they colonize?
  4. When Guy's Uncle sleeps, he sleeps. This trite fact was the dormant cause of a most dire misfortune. Six thousand solid gold doubloons, stashed in a secret receptacle of Uncle's chimney, vanished. Six thousand doubloons is not a sum that can simply be lost with impunity. And Uncle found himself under the necessity of hitting up on some way of reducing his expenses. Retrenchment, however, was not a popular theme in Uncle's household. Uncle, you must know, has quite a quantity of children. So many, in fact, that he hardly ever gets the number right when he's trying to tell someone else how many there are. At any rate, there are more than enough to make for a sizable grocery bill, and a few other sizable and not so necessary bills as well - not so necessary, that is, from Uncle's point of view. But the same brains that propelled the MCTC to the top under his guidance, would hit upon the perfect solution to this dilemma as well. He was lying awake in bed one night (he'd found it hard to drop right off to sleep since the robbery) when the answer hit him right between the eyes. He'd take his eldest - and most expensive - children just where they had been begging to go - orchid grubbing on Celestia. Why anyone cared at all to search for some flower was quite beyond him, but life would be cheaper out in the colonies, and he could get Elaine to introduce a few reforms at home. And who knew? If they found this fabled orchid, perhaps his fortunes would take a turn! And thus it came to pass that Guy's Uncle, the most practical of the practical, the most sensible of the sensible, found himself on Celestia searching for a - place to live. Orchid hunting was in fact more complicated than he had thought. But at last, he found the perfect place. As he said to his children when they gaped at his choice, "If we're going to do this, we're going to do this right." The expedition consists of Uncle, his two oldest and one other who refused to be left behind. Uncle's eldest child is a boy - no, allow me to rephrase that. Uncle's eldest child is a very cool young man. His name is Vance. Next in the line-up comes Amira. Also cool. It was Elaine who named those two. Uncle took the naming into his own hands after that, but, sadly, the damage had already been done. So despite highly sensible names like Bob and Anne, he kept on getting cool children, and a corresponding price tag. In fact, as kids will sometimes do, his younger children took the cool thing to an even farther extreme. Witness Bob, third member of the expedition. And so, Uncle's adventures on Celestia have begun ------ Another picture: And that's all, folks! I'm afraid I watched a movie tonight instead of finishing my Category C, but you'll probably see it in the near future as I continue the story arc! C&C welcome! This definitely took a long time to build, pretty happy with how it turned out, not happy with the overview pictures I managed to take. I have quite a few pictures without minifigures but my connection is going really really slow right now, so even doing this much was a pain! But I hope you enjoy it!
  5. Montoya's personal diary, Day 24, Temple Ruins Exploring the island upon which we were lost, young Baker and myself ventured inland, only to stumble upon something most marvellous. Following what appeared to be a track trodden by both men (of which we saw none) and beasts (of which we saw an abundance) we reached a clearing where several tracks converged between the cliffs. Apart from a colourful bird, which was clearly some non-descript pheasant, surprisingly, we found ruins of an ancient civilisation, almost entirely hidden amongst the jungle flora. These ruins seemed to have some resemblance to the architecture of the Mysec on Cascadia, leading me to believe that we may be stranded in the same region, perhaps even on Cascadia itself, although both flora and fauna differs somewhat. Perhaps the Mysec civilisation once spanned a large part of the Brick Seas? Young Baker rushed to the ruins... ...where he made a most fascinating find! In the center of what must have been a temple or large residence, on what looked like an alter, a most beautiful orchid was growing, apparently drawing nourishment and water from canals dug into the very cliff. Upon closer inspection, it was clear that this arrangement must have carried great meaning. While the alter had been damaged by the course of time, it seemed indisputable that it was made to honour the orchid. One can only speculate what importance it may have held for the ancient civilisation that once built these walls. If only I could discuss this with Dr. Brickingstone... After carefully drawing maps of the location, Baker and I both decided to continue exploring the island. After all, it would seem we were to share with the many birds and orchids this island as our home for quite some time. I only hope my notes shall not be destroyed by damp or mildew before we are rescued. And that the rescue will not come too soon. So many things to describe and discover... Montoya ______________________________________________________ Expedition notes, day 11, Ruins in the jungle The climate has been unexpectedly kind to us, and the birds are ever curious, following the expedition's every move so close I believe I could reach out to touch them from time to time. Earlier today, we reached a clearing in between the cliffs, where a number of natural tracks converged. Obviously, we were not the first to find the clearing, as long since, some mysterious people, possibly related to the Mysec of Cascadia (as Dr. Brickingstone suggested), had erected a temple of some sorts. I ordered the expedition to halt here and make temporary camp, so the scientific gentlemen could investigate the ruins, and the soldiers could fill our water reserves from the local creek. After a short council, each went about his own tasks. While the soldiers discussed whatever it is soldiers discuss (although I must say, the Royal Pioneers are a handy bunch on an expedition like this, able and willing to conduct themselves in these jungles!), Nathaniel and I checked out the possible routes to take from here. Most curiously, we found recent tracks of two set of boots, apparently of Halosian design, but otherwise, the site appeared undisturbed. The tracks seemed fresh, however, but probably, they were just those of another expedition. The island seems to be crowded with them these days... The two scientists rushed towards the ruins, and I heard them mutter excitedly. Something about an orchid of great cultural importance. To whom this flower may hold importance I did not catch, but I am certain they will share their findings at the campfire tonight. In any case, it seems we have found the orchid we were searching for. Thomas Mallory ______________________________________ Overview shot: I am quite happy with how this worked out, with the story shots and all. Personally, I particularly like the way the ruins are embedded in the jungle. And in case it wasn't clear, Montoya's footprints are those the Fontonajo expedition found on their search of the same ruins. It seems almost inevitable that the two expeditions should soon meet, and I hope we will be able to show it in the brick, if @Elostirion and I can both find the time :) Montoya, however, seems to have eluded discovery this time, though, but now at least we know that he is on Celestia! ;) C&C welcome, as always, and good luck to everyone with the challenge.
  6. To the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy, Upon venturing into the jungle of Celestia with Dr. Albert Brickingstone and the rest of the expedition, we chanced upon a number of curious birds. Curious in both their appearance and their behaviour. The avians of Celestia appear unimpeded by fear of people, and we were able to approach them quite closely. In fact, had we not, I feel confident they would have approached us out of sheer curiousity! The most fascinating by far is a large bird clearly related to the common pheasant of northern Halos, much priced by hunters and palatial estates for its royal appearance, particularly the long tail of elaborately coloured feathers. However, the Celestian Pheasant (Phasianus Celestiales) differs in two, perhaps three important aspects. First, its colours are much brighter. Just like the common pheasant, the male bird is much more elaborately coloured, with orange cover feathers for its wings and chest, a red beak, and a dark red plume upon its head. Its wings also appear to be must larger than those of the hen, which is less extravagant in colour, being tan apart from an orange plume and long bright orange tail-feathers, shared with the male. Second, it appears to eat fish, apparently catching them in the streams, ponds and rivers of inland Celestia, something setting it very much apart from the common pheasant of Halos. This observation, as well as general behaviour of the birds, have led me to conclude a third possible difference: That contrary to the common pheasant, the Celestiales is of much higher intelligence. This must be determined through further study, which should prove simple, as the pheasant is found in great numbers across the island. I will also add that the bird seems to be nesting on the ground, laying large bright azure eggs, and that the male bird cares for the hen during the incubation period, bringing her fresh fish. Further study will reveal whether this continues after the eggs have hatched and whether the pheasants are monogamous. Your Humble Servant Sir Anton Hughes PS. Please find enclosed a few sketches of the Phasianus Celestiales and a few other birds encountered on the island. Phasianus Celestiales: Here shown at its nest, the azure eggs clearly visible, as is the colour and size differences between the male and female bird. Non-descript, fan-tailed songbird: This bird followed the expedition throughout the day, its melodious, although insistent, song tirelessly filling our ears with music. Unknown sparrow: A small non-descript sparrow, found in large numbers throughout the island. _______________________________________________________ Unfortunately, I was not able to get more than one Cat. B. entry built, but I enjoyed putting together these little birds. C&C welcome.
  7. Many asked why the street had been named Montoya Street, but it all came down to some rather mysterious circumstances of Don Isaac Montoya's disappearance. Having departed for Tortuga to meet with Captain Benjamin Morgan to try to establish some form of diplomatic contact to the Sea Rats, none had heard from him for months. As a grand initiative to explore inland Celestia and find the fabled superb orchid had been announced, the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy had naturally started planning an expedition of its own, in which Don Isaac Montoya had been expected to take part. However, there was no sign of him, and to honour his memory, the RSNP had named their new premises in Jameston after the chairman believed to be lost. And with "Montoya House" placed at the end of the street in question, the name "Montoya Street" had quickly caught on. Montoya House was gated by a Triumphal Arch celebrating the triumphs of science. Upon passing the arch, visitors are met with a glorious manor consisting of three wings in the latest Corlander style. One wing holds the stables and storerooms... ...while another holds dormitories and offices for visiting scientists. The main wing holds a lecture hall on the second floor, and a kitchen on the first floor... ...as well as a library with all the latest volumes and a large dining hall. These arrangements ensures that the RSNP can entertain scientists from all over the Brick Seas, ensuring them ample space, material and opportunity to delve deep into the scientific wonders of the island. It is expected to become the staging point for many an expedition into the interior of the island in the years to come. One such expedition is preparing to set out just these days. From left to right: Dr. Albert Brickingstone, anthropologist of Cascadian fame, who had been stranded for years, living amongst the Mysec of Cascadia, studying their history, language and culture. Sir Anton Hughes, physician, now on leave from his medical duties to delve into his other passion: Birds. Thomas Mallory, adventurer and tracker, and his assistant Nathaniel Parker. They take care of the practical parts of the mission, navigating the jungles, identifying edible plants, tracking birds and beasts, humble tasks that the RSNP intellectuals are rarely willing (or able) to care for themselves. Royal Pioneers, ensuring safety, drawing maps, and doing the heavy lifting. One never knows what dangers the jungles may bring! ______________________________________________ A few more pictures can be found in my Flickr. I am quite happy with how this turned out, actually. As always, C&C is welcome.
  8. Hot spring, Celestia This is my entry for Era II, Challenge 1, Category B. Jameston, Celestia, 30th day of the 1st month, 618 AE Distinguished fellows of the Royal Society, In the name of science and our Queen, may her reign be long and prosperous, I have a new geological find of great interest to report to you. In my exploration of the wonderful island of Celestia, I have discovered a spring where the water is hot and with a visibly different chemical composition to the surrounding streams and small lakes. While I have not yet been able to analyze the chemical composition of the spring in my laboratory, by it’s odour I conclude that it most certainly contains traces of sulphur. After a good long bath in the spring’s waters my skin is clearly rejuvenated, so my assumption is that it has some medical properties worthy of further research. Yours faithfully, Dr. Alistaire Garrett
  9. We had noticed this temple half an hour earlier. Given that we went out without a real plan, we decided it may be a good vantage point. Closing in on it, we quickly noticed we didn't need to go further from there - the Orchid was here. But these skeletons are giving us a creepy vibe; I think we should turn back now...
  10. After studying goats and frogs, the group had reached the further inward parts, which - while still verdant and mostly in jungle - were less humid than the westward facing mountainsides. "So what exactly are we looking for again, noble lads?", the doctor grubmled when they sat around a small campfire that Luca had just lit. "The hidden secrets of this island...", Luca do Figino replied. "And so how exactly does that help anyone, if we find secrets here in the wilderness?", the doctor insisted. "You as a doctor ask me, like... you really ask me what the purpose of doing research... exploring secrets... you must be kidding?!", stuttered a confused Luca. To which the doctor just frowned. Most conversations had been like that. The doctor, sceptical, critical and ill-mooded, while Luca acted like they alone were to save the world with their journey. Lady Ludovica remained rather silent, obviously struggling to keep up with the others on their voyage. And Barlo did all the dirty work while hating it, because he kept insisting that's his role in the company of the rich and noble. It was about time Juan changed some things about this. "My friends. We have journeyd far, further than anyone we know before us. We have seen much in those past weeks. We have come closer. And yet still I have a secret to share. I have not only come here to explore the flora and fauna of this island. Well, the flora, yes, but I can be more specific. I am certain you have all seen more orchids on this island than we are all used to seeing. Well then, I have heard rumours that the most beautiful orchid of the world is to be found on Celestia! And that is mostly why I am here: To find it! The most beautiful orchid, that ever was, or ever had been! So what do you think? Are you with me on that one?!" Juan Alfonso Fontonajo thought he had done a great job of motivating his group, but not in the slightest. Soon after a massive dispute erupted among them, to which The Doctor and Lady Ludovica were the only two to remain at their camp at the foot of some ruins which they had discovered. Stupid Fontonajo. All this expedition for what? An orchid? A flower? Hundreds and thousands of flowers were grown in the greenhouses each and every day. And this young fool ventured all the way up the mountains through the dangerous jungles of an unknown island... just to find one single flower? The Doctor had not thought that Fontonajo was this stupid... To forget some of his anger, he soon took his chance to explore the ruins more closely, and was quite astonished by the fact that he soon found footsteps. Most certainly of leather boots. Humans, civilized humans - most likely Halosians - had been here. The Doctor was no scout, but he guessed the footprints were no older than two days. Now where were his companions to share those thoughts? Interested to find who left those footsteps? Maybe @Bregir will be able to tell you more about it? Luca do Fignio had walked away. Stupid Fontonajo! He had come to Celestia to find the orchid, and take it away! And then what? Plant it in Nova Terreli so that it would perish there, in bad conditions? What a moron! The world was full of bad people, and he had once again joined one of them. And The Doctor, always in the worst mood. And Lady Ludovica never even said a word, and let it all just happen. And here now he walked, on that narrow path through those ruins, and... WOW! His mind stopped for a second, when he saw the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life. In a valley, in the highlands of Celestia, surrounded by the ruins of an ancient civilization, grew hundreds and thousands of orchids, in all the colours he could possibly imagine. That was... noone would ever be able to steal this beauty from Celestia. And right so. And he stood there in pure amazement, just staring at all those flowers which in their beauty would even cheer up The Doctor. And he was so caught by the beauty of what he saw, that he did not even notice the big yellow cat striding by further down the vale. Barlod had joined him when Juan had left the company in anger. Why would those fools keep arguing? Had the height made them dumb already? Was there not enough conflict in the world already? His life had become so much easier after he and his father had decided to withdraw from politics, and from their ambitions at the same time. He even had time to travel the world now. And he didn't even intend to take the orchid from Celestia. "Not even if it was made of pure gold", he thought, when Barlo touched his arm. And right there it stood, and Juan was most certain he had found it - the most beautiful orchid in the world - though he did not believe his own eyes. In a lowered department of the ruins of an ancient temple complex, in a masoned pit, here in the highlands of Celestia, there stood the statue of an orchid, certainly more than 6 metres in height, gleaming golden in the sun. Juan Alfonso Fontonajo had found it. Right here in the jungles of Celestia. "This is... beautiful! I will get us a shovel, mylord!", Barlo said. "We should better take a quill and write a letter to Queen Annetta, telling her about the orchid, and congratulate her to her choice of Celestia...", Juan replied. "And write to the Royal Society so they can protect it from the potential greed of Corrish statesmen?", Barlo said, with some uncertainty still n his voice as to whether he was allowed to say such things. Juan Alfonso Fontonajo just smiled at him and nodded. Finally Barlo started finding his confidence. The confidence, that in a new and free world everyone was allowed to voice their opinion, regardless of both origin and wealth. If it took weeks of travel through the jungle and a golden orchid in the ruins of an ancient civilization deep within the mountains to start changing the world - then it was all worth it. Some more pictures:
  11. Starting from their house in Jameston, Juan Alfonso Fontonajo and his expedition had travelled into the inlands of Celestia. Their journey through the verdant and often humid jungles, up the mountains, had come with a lot of struggle. Fortunately, their company had been saved from harm of any sort, except some minor scratches from vines, or some bites from mosquitos. The trees had become smaller and smaller, and the jungles less dense and less wet, the higher they had come. That was somewhat relieving, and also gave great sight onto the lands around them and all the secrets they might be able to unveil. Yesterday they had followed some strange sounds, only to find that those were coming from two goats, running up and down the steepest rocks as if they were the most even grassland. Luca do Fignio raise from his daydreams and kept writing his report to the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy. "... must be the most astounding animals I have met in my entire life. I would tend to call them mountain goats but am afraid that simple name will not do their skills justice. A slope full of lose rocks may descent almost vertically, yet still those small runners will be able to just run it down, without ever doubting or without ever stumbling in the slightest. I do not see how a tiger, a jaguar or any other of the wild cats that are rumoured to wander the jungles of both Cascadia and Celestia - and rumoured I say because I will yet have to see one myself - might ever be able to catch pray on one of the mountain goats." "The small yellow frogs still leave me confused. I assume the first one I have seen must have been at a height of what I approximate to be roughly 2000 ft. above both Jameston and the sea level, not calculating the impacts circularity of Terra, which, for a rough estimation as mine, would not account for much anyway. The frequency in which we saw those frogs increased with increasing height, however we have never seen more than one in the same spot. Some of my companions have joked that it is the same frog following our ascent, but I highly doubt this. Neither does this frog make loud noises, nor did it show any other signs of special skills or treats, that would differentiate it from normal frogs. On my journey back I intend to catch one to continue my studies in further depths - whether those frogs carry poison, or excrete any fluids, and most specially why we have only seen them over a specific height - because I do not yet see any reason for this to be, except the fact that it is what we have witnessed. For now - with no further observations - I will continue and call this unknown species the Yellow Highland Frog, until I come up with a better name for its unique abilities, which I am most determined to unveil." And while Luca do Fignio kept writing his essays, Juan Alfonso Fontonajo was already planning the next steps of their voyage in his head.
  12. Finding the Superb Orchid, Celestia This is my entry for Era II, Challenge 1, Category C. The expedition led by Gideon Saulse de Bothnia has set out into the jungle. Trekking on ancient roads through the jungle. Finally they reached the goal of the expedition. The scientific leader of the expedition writes in his diary: “From the travels of Dr. Alistaire Garrett. Celestia, 27th day of the 1st month, 618 AE. We had struggled very slowly through the jungle for many hours when finally we came upon an ancient road paved with square stones. It seemed like someone, probably the natives, have been keeping it clear of larger vegetation. Following this road our pace picked up and ancient ruins could be seen among the trees. Suddenly we saw a clearing in the dense forest and among the chattering of the birds we heard the purling sound of a small waterfall. To our left, we now saw two imposing temple structures. But what really caught my eyes was the largest and most splendid orchid I have ever seen. Our expedition must surely have found the Superb Orchid the natives were talking about!” Finding the Superb Orchid among ancient holy buildings. Tranquility. Edan Braxton and Dr. Garrett spots the Superb Orchid. Ancient temple. The Superb Orchid itself Without figures and some closeups: Some WIP pictures if anyone is interested in the workflow:
  13. The Gilded Cup, Jameston, Celestia This is my entry for Era II, Challenge 1, Category A. The build was somewhat inspired by the 18th century Green Dragon Tavern in Boston. In the rapidly growing settlement of Jameston, a place of particular popularity among wealthy gentlemen scientists and adventurers exploring the wonders of Celestia is the luxurios (well, by colonial standards...) tavern called The Gilded Cup. An expedition is making ready to set out from there to search for the rumored superb orchid of Celestia. The Gilded Cup The innkeeper greets one of the island's many explorers Corlander colonial troops Expedition members are discussing their plans for their venture into the jungle Members of the expedition Gideon Saulse de Bothnia Mayor of Astrapi. Always a restless adventurer, so when he got bored of the duties of mayor he has neglected all of that and gone off on new adventures. Now Gideon has heard the rumors of ancient treasures on Celestia and has arrived in Jameston, in the search of the fame and glory. Jayson Saulse Member of the Order of the Faith, devoted to Poseidon. Brother of Gideon, but has relinquished his noble titles when he swore fealty to the Order. Exploring the frontiers together with his brother, but his motives are less obvious. He claims to be searching for ever more splendid offerings to the God of the Sea in order to improve the good fortunes of the Oleander fleet, but some whisper that his true objective with this endeavor is to please his masters and strengthen his position within the Order. Dr. Alistaire Garrett Gentleman scientist, with enough inherited money to spend on a life of scientific exploration while still travelling as comfortable as possible. As every true gentleman scientist of this era, his research interests are multi-disciplinary. His true calling however lies is the discovery and cataloging of the botanical and zoological wonders of New Terra. Edan Braxton Corlander adventurer, among the first to explore Cascadia and therefore speaks the Myzectlan tongue well. He can therefore communicate somewhat also with the natives on Celestia and will (for a good price) guide an expedition towards a rumored ancient temple complex in the jungle.
  14. Basement House, Montoya Street, Jameston, Celestia Jameston had attracted many foreigners over the past few weeks. Rumours had gone around of an orchid to be found on Celestia, an orchid so beautiful that everyone in the world would stop in silent adoration and just want to watch it for the rest of their lives. Juan Alfonso Fontonajo had assembled a small group of people around himself to lead an expedition into the inner parts of the islands, up the mountains. He had recently been to Cocovia, to get an impression of what might be the future of land based mobility: The Wagonway. And impressed he was, though also certain that this was not what it should be in final perfection. When he boarded a ship to Celestia with his servant Barlo Forga, he met a group of people who shared his same goal: Finding the most beautiful orchid in the world on Celestia. They decided to join forces and set up camp in Celestia first. Fontonajo hired a group of builders to construct the house that one of his new found companions, Luca do Figino, had designed. They dug about a metre deep into the ground and made a half open-basement - half of which soon became a barn, while the other half became a workshop. As it was rather warm and moist on Celestia, this was the perfect way to keep the air fresh while working on the preparations for their journey. They had even planted some of the native Celestian flowers, with lightish blue patels. And they planned to add more of the things they would find on this beautiful island. Hence also the barn, which might soon be home to some of the island's native anmials. 15. The "Unfolded Tablecloth Productions" presents you their next big hit: Hugo D'Offren embarks once again on a great adventure! This time though it is not an adventure involving vanquishing enemies of the Crown, rather than a mission of scientific (and prestigious) nature. We are to explore the jungles of Celestia and locate the fabled Superb Orchid of Celestia! Hugo has just arrived at Jameston, accompanied by his trusted crew and marines. With him, there is also a young and ambitious dragoon officer, the protege of Hugo (sporting the Dragoon's shako used when on foot and the dreaded scarlet demi-cape of the Oleon Dragoons regiments). He is his sister's son after all. All together, they are to meet a Crown agent (the man in black attires - let's call him Mr B for now) that was stationed in Jameston some months ago in order to facilitate the expedition's first steps among other things. The meeting is to take place in front of "The Captain's Daughter" Inn, at a secondary quay of the settlement. At the following pics, you will watch this meeting taking place (and all those sailors "happily" carrying the expedition's luggage and stuff - mostly blank canvas and empty diaries ready to be filled with the wonders of this island's Jungles). Sadly no time for interior (even a rudimentary one). The "bucket floating around was drifted here from a nearby wreck - worry not, as none was injured. Both buildings (The Captain's Daughter Inn and a nearby merchant house) are a gift from Oleon to the good people of Jameston. They can license them in their name as they see fit. Thanks for watching and good luck to all the contestants!
  16. previously Doctor's Thaum diary Jameston, January 618, the 15th Celestia Superb Orchid Search, 10th day We left the shores of Celestia and we enter the inner island fives days ago. The rank vegetation drove the Garret twins to opt for water travel, they built two basics but strongs rafts and we continue the travel through this thick jungle by the easiest way... Indeed it seems that a travel on dry land could have huge impact on the untouch flore of Celestia. I have to scold Callaghan many times to avoid the scraping of some beautiful but fragile flowers like this beautiful one - thanks to the swampy area, no doubt that we have here another kind of Arum (Fig A). We could see, a beautiful colored snake (Fig B), but we don't have many information except Iauln drawing because Callaghan refuse to help us for scientific testing like knowing if it was poisonous or if its bite was painful or if it was a constrictor one. The highlights of this swamp travel was a wonderful giant carnivorous plant like we have never seen before, once again Callaghan refuse to take part to any scientific test. Iauln made some drawings while Sven and I were starstruck by such a beauty (Fig C.) We decided to call it "hungarius uncontrollibus drosera" as it certainly use snap traps to ensure prey catching. Fig A. Arum Bromeliaceae gigas Fig B. Fig C. Hungarius Uncontrollibus Drosera C&C welcome, this is sadly my last challenge 1 built, because of the dead of my PC and so the lose of many pics (not only those of the challenge )
  17. previously Doctor's Thaum diary Celestia, North of Vanilla Bay, January 618, the 9th Celestia Superb Orchid Search, 5th day The past two days were a struggle against barren rocks, cliffs and winds of the northwestern cape of the island. We are now entering Orchid Bay, right in the very north of Celestia, we are close to the jungle but, if not rocky as the cliffs, the way must be very hard too. We may have to fight with our cutlass to pass through the rank vegetation. Luckily, the Garret twins are skilled buccaneers and theirs advices are very useful. They found a path of plants mixed with sands, were it is very easy to walk through, Iauln took advantage and unearthed a ant-hill (with some giant ants) and Sven and I enjoyed some beautiful flowers (Fig 1 and Fig 2) with one of them surely being an orchid (Fig 2) , but not The Great One I'm afraid. Fig 1 Fig 2 C&C welcome as usual, third Cat. B entry one more to come before cat. C
  18. "Calm down kids, calm down" ... Mrs. Hoover had a bit of trouble with her class today. The children could not be blamed though, for they were excited to see the Academy for the Science of Sugar - science and sugar, what more could a Corlander child ask for?The class had been invited for a tour of the academy, since its purpose was not only to research all things related to sugar - sources, refinement, uses - but also to inspire the youth to a future in the academic field. Mrs. Hoover and her class waited in front of the gates, being greated by two friendly Corrington guards. First an overview over the whole facility: the main building had two wings, on the area around it were a couple of fields with different plants. On the left side of the main building there also was a small greenhouse, and on the backside there was a stack of bee hives. The tour began in the main building. The first stop was the library, where one of the scientists was working on a book about "exciting news in the fields of sugarcane research". The bookshelves were already crammed full with books about every possible aspect of sugar, and a table in the rear of the library was covered with maps of the best regions for certain plants. The next stop was in the laboratory, were another scientist explained his work. "Greetings, young ones. What we have here is our experimental laborator. We examine different plants and their content of sugar. In the storage spaces behind me you can see some: a grass called stevia, and two different types of sugarcane. On the table in front of me I have some sample of fully grown stevia plants, sent to us by a farmer on the island of Argentia. He is interested in whether this type of plant is one to be rumoured to be extremely sweet. In the jar on the other side of the table you can see some sap from agave plants from that same island. The question remains which is the sweeter one of both. I hope we will find out soon!" One of the pupils was curious: "And what is it in that red cup?" "That is my coffee, kiddo." Leaving the main building through the back door, the group came to the bee hives. "Do not be scared, they do not harm anybody as long as they are not provoked. Note how the different hives are marked in different colours. We keep these bees to study the honey they produce. Honey is a great sweetener, so of course we are interested in its properties!" The greenhouse had been set up to study certain orchids, some of which had very sweet nectar. They needed special care, even in the already warm climate of Celestia. Moving past two small fields - the farmer from Argentia had provided seeds, so here some young agave and stevia plants were being grown for future studies - the class came to some small fields of sugarcane. But was it? A third scientist - even if she looked more like a farmer - explained: "There are different types of sugarcane plants, and we try to find out which type grows best in what places. Here we have one field with a variant being grown on Lacryma, and right next to it another type from Tiberia. As you can see, the sugarcane from Tiberia grows smaller, and we have found out it also produces less sugar." "You may wonder why we do not just plant the other type of sugarcane everywhere. Well, it is not as easy. Tiberia is not the best environment for sugarcane. But we are working on the problem. If you turn around, you can see a field of beet. This might be the future of sugar for the Mainland. We have found this type of beet growing well almost everywhere, and it has small amounts of sugar in it. By selective breeding we hope to increase its sugar levels, thus providing a source of sugar that grows in the Mainland. THis way we would not have to transport it all over the Brickseas, greatly reducing prices back there. There is some way to go, but the first results are promising!" As they leave, the children where even more excited than before. Sugar rules! ==================================================================================================================== A large education property for Jameston. I tried to cover as many areas of "sugar studies" as possible in that timeframe. A study hall, a laboratory, experimental fields - which you will find at any faculty of agricultural sciences - and combine it with the things I already know about the BotBS world. The decision to use the sugarcane build from @Simon_S was due to me having the parts needed - that it was on Tiberia and provided a nice IC reason for shorter plants was just the proverbial ising on the cake. I would have liked to include some more details about bees and sugar beet, but the level of knowledge in that time period was not advanced enough. Fun fact: sugarbeet was a thing only from 1801 onwards, prior to that it was either honey, fruits or sugar from sugarcane as sweetener. @Ayrlego: I will license the property (large education for Jameston) in a minute, you promised mucho monies. In this case 460DB if I am not mistaken. And some inside joke at the end:
  19. Updated 1 April - Results posted here Corrington, Challenge I – Celestia’s Superb Orchid Corrington’s latest claims in New Terra have mostly focused on the East Prio Sea, where the Crown has claimed a chain of Islands which have been dubbed the Paradise Isles. The two largest islands of this chain are Celestia and Cascadia. The Royal Navy has conducted a thorough survey of the coastlines of these new territories which have been mapped and settlement has begun. An expedition into the interior of Cascadia led to the discovery of the ancient city of Myzectlan, however, little is known about the interior of Celestia. Contact with the natives on Celestia remains limited, although they appear to be a far more primitive society to the Myzectlan on Cascadia. Communication with them has so far proven very difficult. Recently however, one of the native auxiliary scouts that accompanied the expedition from Alicentia has approached Colonel Sir Dirk Allcock, Colonial Governor of the Paradise Isles with news. The scout has learned of rumours of a ruined temple complex deep in the highlands of the interior of Celestia. Abandoned thousands of years ago, the natives believe the temple to be where the gods lived on the island before departing sometime in the distant past, and it is considered a sacred site, haunted with the spirits of the ancestors. Most of the natives avoid it, although those who have ventured in talk about an orchid that they describe as the most beautiful in existence. Celestia is quickly becoming known amongst the Corrish colonists as the Orchid Isle, due to the huge diversity of the epiphytes that grow there, so the claim of the most beautiful in existence is one not to be taken lightly! So while Dirk doesn't place much weight in the superstitions of the natives, and is even sceptical about the existence of 'ancient ruins', he is deeply curious regarding this splendid Orchid. That, and the need to explore and map the interior, have meant that he and the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy will sponsor expeditions into the interior open to adventurers from all nations. So now is your chance to make a name in the field of science! Put on your best hat, and join the adventure... NB: In era II, each main challenge will focus on developing one area of the "hosting nation", and highlight the specialty of each nation. For challenge I it is Corrington and Science. We may also add smaller "story-challenges" in between, but you will see. Soon(TM)..... General Rules Deadline: January 15th 30th, 618 AE. The exploration challenge will consist of three sub-categories. Participants may choose to enter any number of sub-categories, however all participates must submit an entry to Category A in order to progress to the other two categories. All entries must be linked in this thread. As entries start to be submitted, the fogged out ‘terra incognita’ on the map may start to be revealed as word of your discoveries filters back to Jameston. New geographical features will most likely be named after (or by) their discoverers. Category A – Setting up Camp All expeditions require a starting point, so all participants are required to licence a small property (may be bigger if you like) in the settlement of Jameston. If required the mayor will provide the funds to licence the property (upon request, although ownership of the property will then be transferred to the settlement). A Jameston Street Your expedition’s base may be anything from a log cabin or tent, an inn or tavern, or a grand residence suitable for a gentleman or women of high status. It should introduce your explorer and his/her team. Rewards and Rules: Minimum size 16x16. One entry allowed per player. Build must be able to be licensed under the rules of the EGS. The winner of this challenge will have obviously invested a great deal in the fledgling settlement, and so will be awarded a free large property licence of any type in the settlement of Jameston (micro scale build only required). The ownership of all properties will have the personal guarantee of the Colonial governor, even in the event of a state of war between Corrington and the nation of the owner. Judging Criteria: Base camp build and the description of the expedition and it's member minifigs. Category B - The Flora, Fauna, and Geography of Celestia Celestia has a huge diversity of plants, from swamp reeds to gorgeous orchids, animal life, from the smallest insects to rumours of large carnivorous cats, and geography, from rivers and lakes, deep jungle and open grassland, to mountains, valleys and caves. Portray and describe a plant, animal or geographical feature with the description in the style of a scientific article to the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy. Animals may be brick built or Lego animals. Your build should be accompanied by a short letter to the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy describing the creature in as much detail as possible. Rewards and Rules: Maximum size per entry: 1024 stud (equal to 32x32). Each entry may consist of several builds and multiple entries per player is encouraged. The overall winner for Cat B will be granted a free large educational property license, second place a free medium educational property license and third place a free small educational property license (microbuilds required to activate) in Jameston. Additionally, there will be one winner for each sub-category of Flora, Fauna, and Geography. The winners in each of these areas of study will be rewarded with a 100DB grant from the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy (and honorary membership if not already a member). In addition every entrant to this category will be permitted to name the species or feature they discover (within normal naming conventions). Do you want to describe an animal and geographical feature? Have no worries for in this category, several entries per player are encouraged. Judging criteria: Depth of "scientific" description and creativity in illustrating it with builds. Category C - The Superb Orchid of Celestia Show your character discovering the 'Superb' Orchid within the ruins of the ancient temple. The build should clearly show your explorer discovering the orchid within jungle ruins. Remember the build should be set in the mountainous jungle deep in the interior of Celestia. Be creative - perhaps the primitive tribes are helpful, or maybe they are trying to prevent you discovering the ruins? Perhaps the ruins are related to Myzectlan on Cascadia? Rewards and Rules: Size: Unlimited. One entry per player. The winner will be awarded the title “Great Explorer of Celestia” and will be rewarded with a 150DB grant from the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy (and honorary membership if not already a member). As the winners will now be quite the renowned botanists, they will receive a free large plantation property license, second place a free medium plantation property license and third place a free small plantation property license (microbuilds required to activate) on Celestia. Judging Criteria: Tranquillity and beauty of the scene, integration of jungle and ruins, the superb orchid itself.
  20. The search for land capable of growing sugar cane was one of the main drivers behind the nations of the Madrice peninsular exploring the eastern seas. The demand for sugar remains huge, and while Corrington's national drink may well be rum, the nation has until now mostly relied on importing sugar from Oleon or Eslandola. While some attempts at growing sugar had been made on Tiberia, these were not very successful, Tiberia falling outside the tropical zone - indeed rumours were that these attempts were nothing but a cover for smuggling activity. When Corrington made claims in the Sea of Theives, sugar growing was first attempted in earnest in Stormhaven. When the settlement of Jameston was established on Celestia, the main motivation was access to the vanilla bean the island was famed for - indeed the ETTC has recently established the first vanilla plantation outside Jameston. However, Royal Society botanists commissioned by the Crown determined the environs of Jameston, especially the flood plains to the south, to also be idea for sugar cultivation. A government owned company was established - the Celestia Sugar Company (CSC) with the remit of founding a sugar industry on Celestia. After many months hard work, the first plantation is operational. Now when travelling on the rough roads heading into the southern hinterland, the fields of sugar cane dominate the landscape. Footprint = 10,240 studs Of course a plantation on such a scale requires major manpower and the company has offered generous incentives to attract workers to the project. Workers are offered a revolutionary arrangement where they are required to work two weeks in the fields then receive one week off in the settlement. While in the fields they are accommodated in specially designed blocks. These accommodation blocks can hold 20 workers and while pretty basic, they are designed with features like extra ventilation to help them cool down at night. Footprint: 5,120 studs Interior picture (especially for you @Mesabi ) The first sections of cane are ready for harvesting, which means the fields are carefully set on fire. This idea, while sounding crazy at first, makes much sense. Up to 25 percent of the sugar cane plant can be leaves and other parts that need to be removed before processing. By setting the fields on fire, these parts are burnt away, along with the undergrowth, making harvesting much easier. Here workers are preparing to harvest a pre-burnt field. Footprint = 3,840 studs Lastly, such an ambitious project needs the right oversight and leadership - and such talent requires an adequate residence from which to oversee the operation. Edward Barrett was identified the man for the job, and a grand residence has been constructed for his use. Footprint = 10, 752 studs Additional Pics: Now, with huge tracts of land under sugar cultivation, and the first harvest due, the Celestia Sugar Company is planning mills to process their raw product. Long Live the Queen! ----------------------------------- I've been wanting to kick start the sugar industry for Corrington for some time now, being that it is indeed stated as one of the main drives for us initially expanding beyond Tiberia. Although I had a stack of builds on my to do list, for some reason I started playing with sugar cane plants in LDD. I then did some pricing on Bricklink... and then promptly went back to LDD!! If I was going to attempt to make a major sugar industry, I decided I needed to go big. I will be licensing as a Royal sized plantation in the EGS. The total of the plantation parts of the builds (The fields, workers block and post-burning field) exceed the required foot print (19,200/16,384). The workers block and cane fields were supposed to be part of the same build, but LDD kept crashing so I separated them out to remain sane! Also I'd like to assure you all that each cane plant was hand placed. Believe it or not I sat here and placed each one individually over several long and tedious sessions! No bulk cut and past here! The plantation house was to also be part of the Royal plantation, but as the builds so far exceeded the size requirement, and the plantation house itself has a footprint of 10,752 I will be licensing it separately as another royal property, this time a residence. Both properties will be donated to the faction. It was great fun to build grand again, but back to the real bricks shortly. I did cave in towards the end and ordered a couple of hundred tan telescope pieces so I can replicate the cane fields (on a smaller scale) in real bricks for the sugar mill which will be the next in the series (although not next in my build list!)
  21. Name: Jameston Ownership: The Crown of Corrington Location: Celestia, East Prio Sea Map: Mayor: Trade Value: see accounts spreedsheet Town Bank: see accounts spreedsheet Town Income per turn/Town Expenses per turn: 230DB/150DB Who can own property in Jameston: Anyone Who can freebuild in Jameston: Anyone Description: Corrington's jewel of the Prio Seas, Jameston is a melting pot of cultures and powerhouse of commerce. Established on the 15th January 617, the first Corlanders landed in a large sheltered bay located on the western shores of Celestia. Rich with natural resources, Jameston was the first Corlander settlement in the Prio Sea, named after Queen Annetta's Grandfather, King James IV of Corrington. Located on the southern shore of Vanilla Bay, Jameston swiftly became one of the quickest growing settlements in the Empire and developed it's own unique style. Early buildings tended to have sturdy lower floors built out of locally produced stone, while colourful timber framed upper stories add a rainbow of colours not normally associated with Corrish settlements. As the settlement developed, the trend has been for more brick buildings rendered in citrus colours of greens, yellows and oranges. The small Alfred River empties into Vanilla bay at the site of the settlement, and upstream large tracts of fertile land have been cleared for sugar cane plantations. Jameston is one of the leading producers of sugar in the new world, and is the site of a Royal Sugar plantation. To the east of the settlement, think verdant jungle covers the land and here vanilla plants can be found growing naturally throughout the jungles. Corrish settlers were quick to exploit this valuable spice, the second most expensive spice known to man second only to saffron. Businesses taking advantage of the islands abundant vanilla plants are known to give investors a bonus in profits. Celestia holds perhaps the largest diversity of orchids yet seen in the world and the jungles are splashed with their bright and vibrant colours. Towards the end of 617, a rush of settlers flocked to Jameston in search of the rumoured 'Superb Orchid'. Hundreds of new species of flora and fauna were discovered and several species in particular have been labelled as the 'Superb Orchid'. It was during these expeditions that several sites were found with ruins of a long forgotten civilisation, thought to be related to the Myzec on the neighbouring island of Cascadia. A hub for the East Terran Trading Company (ETTC), Jameston hosts the majority of company military forces. ETTC troops mainly consist of mercenaries hired from the southern Nizami satrapies of the Molokoi Empire. These men are mostly drawn from the Nizam ethnic group and sign into the ETTC military for 15 years with the promise of immediate Corlander citizenship and a parcel of land in the colonies on retirement. In addition they are allowed to bring up to 5 family members with them to the new world. As such, Jameston hosts a large ethnic Nizami group who tend to live together in the south eastern section of the settlement which has become known as the Nizami Quarter. ETTC forces are mainly comprised of infantry; known as sepoys, but a small unit of lancers also compliments the force. 22. After his brief stop in Stormhaven, Major Dirk Allcock and his expedition have continued to their destination in the East Prio Sea. Here they have began to explore the islands that have been claimed by Corrington, namely Celestia, Cascadia and Garma's Key. He has slowly, yet methodically, made his away along the coast line, and has made a series of preliminary charts. Soon he will have compiled a preliminary map of Queen Annetta's latest possessions, complete with recommendations for future settlements. His main focus has been on Celestia. A much larger island than any claimed by Corrington so far, it is covered with verdant and thick jungle, much thicker and wetter than the colonies in the Sea of Thieves area. Large mountain ranges are visible in the interior. For now he has identified the site he believes is the most suitable for Corrington's first settlement in the Prio Seas. On the Western side of the Island, a large spit of land forms a huge natural harbour that he has dubbed Vanilla Lagoon after the abundance of the valuable epiphyte growing amongst the trees of the jungle on the leeward side of the bay. On the Southern side of the bay, opposite the promitory formed by the southernmost point of the spit, the jungle thins on a flat plain. It is here Dirk plans on establishing Jameston, named for Queen Annetta's Grandfather, King James IV of Corrington. Here he can be seen making landing on one of the beaches to the east of the settlement site. --- I've been planning this one since October but it just never seemed to come together. Several large BrickLink orders of 1x2 trans-blue tiles later and the motivation of the need for the scene for both the RPGs that I participate in, and here it is (finally). Jameston will be established shortly, and Major Allcock will be planning a mini-challenge to explore into the interior hopefully soon. The boat design is from Lego Monster's US Navy whaler on flickr, although the seating is quite fragile, the hull holds together well!
