(Still at South Cothelstone Hall) Dr. Thinkslow-Shootfast quickly closes and locks the door to the room which Herlock Sholmes and Dr. Sonwat had entered. Dr. Thinkslow-Shootfast (or is he?): (to himself) “That was easy!” “That door will hold them for some time. Enough time for me to….” (leaves) (Cut into the room with our heroes) Dr. Sonwat: “Well here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into.” Sholmes: “That door is locked. And massive.” Dr. Sonwat: “Yepp.” Sholmes: “Surely you brought your pistol so that we can shoot our way out.” Dr. Sonwat: “Nope.” Sholmes (looks out the window): “We are high up in a tower. No way we could escape through the windows.” Dr. Sonwat: “Nope.” (Sholmes sits down) Sholmes: “I doubt that Dr. Thinkslow-Shootfast is himself. I guess he has been replaced by someone who just looks like him.” Dr. Sonwat: “Just as it happened with Lord Rushinthought and Lord Fortescue.” Sholmes: “The fake Dr. Thinkslow-Shootfast went to the ‘Crab and Lobster Club’. There he must have heard about the horse race money and the diamond.” Dr. Sonwat: “And then he changed his disguise and stole both of them.” Sholmes: “He must have prepared those disguises earlier on. We are dealing with someone who is quite clever.” Dr. Sonwat: “Yepp.” (Both pause to think) Dr. Sonwat: “So, we found that the key to this mystery is Dr. Thinkslow-Shootfast.” Sholmes: “Yes, but unfortunately what we need now is the key to this room.” Dr. Sonwat: “Which is just outside the room outside of our reach.” (They wait) Sholmes (tosses his hat on the floor): “We let ourselves get trapped. How could we be so stupid?” Dr. Sonwat: “Curiosity killed the cat.” Sholmes: “We did not even inform Inspector Destrale.” Dr. Sonwat: “Nope.” (They wait) Sholmes: “This time, I do not know what is going to save us. South Cothelstone Hall. Sometime later on the same day. Our heroes Herlock Sholmes and Dr. Sonwat boldly approach the entrance. (But they could be heroes just for one day....) Dr. Sonwat: “Looks very peaceful to me.” Sholmes (preparing to knock): “Looks can be deceiving.” Voice from inside: “I hear you knocking but you can’t come in.” Sholmes: “That’s not very friendly!” Voice from inside: “Go back where you’ve been!” Sholmes: “We are here by recommendation of Lord Rushinthought.” (There is a pause, then the large door slowly opens. A man in a uniform appears.) Dr. Sonwat: “Are you Dr. Thinkslow-Shootwell?” Man in uniform: “No, I am the butler. My name is Liam Jeeves. Spelt Liam Jiamh.” Sholmes: “Then you must be bad at spelling!” Man in uniform: “What in insult! I am but of Celtic origin!” Dr. Sonwat: “Our apologies for that. We are here to meet Dr. Thinkslow-Shootwell.” Man in uniform: “I will check whether he wants to accept guests at this time of day. Whom shall I announce?” Dr. Sonwat: “Herlock Sholmes and Dr. Sonwat.” Man in uniform (with a grin): “Airlock Shoumes?” Sholmes: “No, it’s Herlock. Herlock Sholmes.” (The door closes but after a few moments it is opened again and our two heroes are invited in to meet the Dr.. They are led upstairs into a small room in the tower of the building.) Thinkslow-Shootwell: “You wanted to see me, Gentlemen?” Sholmes: “Dr. Thinkslow-Shootwell?” Thinkslow-Shootwell: “Yes.” Sholmes: “I am Herlock Sholmes and this is my partner Dr. H. Sonwat. We have been asked by Lord Rushinthought to investigate the case of his stolen horse race money.” Thinkslow-Shootwell: “I see” Sholmes: “May we ask a few questions?” Thinkslow-Shootwell: “Yes, sure.” Sholmes: “I understand that you are part of the group that regularly meets at the ‘Crab and Lobster’”. Thinkslow-Shootwell: “Yes. I am.” Sholmes: “Where you present on the day when Lord Rushinthought came back from the horse races?” Thinkslow-Shootwell: “Possibly. I do not quite remember every occasion.” Dr. Sonwat: “And where you present when Lord Fortescue came by with the diamond he had bought for his wife?” Thinkslow-Shootwell: “Also possible. Dr. Sonwat enters Quaker Street 9 ¾. Dr. Sonwat enters Herlock Sholmes‘ living room: “Ah, I see you have resolved the mystery of the missing goat.” Sholmes: “Yepp.” Dr. Sonwat: “That’s goat.” (Sorry for that bad pun. The author.) Sholmes: “Let’s talk about our other case. I think we need to talk to the other two members of the “Where Rich Men Meet”-Club, a.k.a. “The Crab & Lobster”. Dr. Sonwat: “Which one are we going to visit first? Dr. Thinkslow-Shootwell or Mr. Winterbottom? Sholmes: “Let’s toss a coin.” (Sonwat tosses a coin and it lands on the edge.) Dr. Sonwat: “It’s one of these days…” Sholmes: “And, of course, we should determine first what the two different sides will mean.” Dr. Sonwat: “Ok, it’s heads for the Doctor and tails for the Mister.” Sholmes: “And if the coin lands on the edge again we will go to that club to meet all of them. What kind of coin are you using anyway?” Dr. Sonwat: “It’s a new gwuinee.” Sholmes: “Ah, so it is worth 13 ½ pnence.” Dr. Sonwat: “Precisely. And I’ve got lots of pnence at home that were sawn in two…” (Sonwat tosses the coin and it shows heads. ) Dr. Sonwat: “Heads – so we head for the Doctor.” Sholmes: “The game commences for the usual fees plus expenses.” (Both get up and leave Quaker Street 9 ¾ ) Voice: “Vous Vous Vous.” Dr. Sonwat: “Look who’s coming to see us – the Marquis!” Sholmes: “Good to see you, my friend. I had expected you.” Dr. Sonwat: “How come?” Sholmes: “There is a poker tournament here in the city, starting next week.” The Marquis: (nods) Sholmes: “Do you want me to look out for card cheats? Like when we caught Lesseriarty?” The Marquis: (nods) Sholmes: Ok, will do. Dr. Sonwat: “We are just on our way to … " (to Sholmes) "wait a second, where does Lord Thinkslow-Shootwell actually live?” Sholmes: “He has a mansion on a hill somewhere up Cliff Richard.” Dr. Sonwat: “Atomic!” Sholmes: “Elementary, my dear Sonwat.” Dr. Sonwat: “Right.” (to the Marquis) “So, that’s where we’re going.” Marquis: (nods and leaves) Dr. Sonwat: “Fine chap. So well-mannered. But what is that?” Sholmes: “Looks like our dog to me.” Dr. Sonwat: “How did it appear so suddenly?” Sholmes: “The dog was there the whole time, while we were talking to the Marquis. You look, Sonwat, but you don’t observe.” Dr. Sonwat: “I see.” Sholmes: “No, you don’t. That’s what I was saying.” Dr. Sonwat: “We should call it Ernest.” Sholmes: “Do you mean that in earnest?” Dr. Sonwat: “Maybe. So, where and what is that mansion on a hill exactly?” Sholmes: “South Cothelstone Hall? We meet the hero again at his home and headquarters. Dr. Sonwat: “Was there a mystery of a lost dog? I mean, who let the dog out?” Sholmes: “The dog has been around ever since Lord Rushinthought came to visit us. It sneaked in with him and has enjoyed sleeping under the table many a time since then.” Dr. Sonwat: “Oh, I never noticed.” Sholmes: “But have a seat. Let’s talk about our current case. What do you think?” Dr. Sonwat: “I think the dog should get a name.” Sholmes: “Right. Dr. Sonwat: “And I think that there must be a link between Lord Rushinthought and Lord Fortescue.” Sholmes: “Precisely. So what shall we do next?” Dr. Sonwat: “Call him Rex.” Sholmes: “I don’t think Lord Rushinthought would appreciate that.” Dr. Sonwat: “Then let’s talk to Rushinthought again.” (they leave) Sholmes: “We would like to clarify a few things about the missing horse race money.” Rushinthought: “Yes, yes. What do you want to know?” Sholmes: “After you had won the money, did you immediately go home?” Rushinthought: “No, no. Chapter 4 Again another afternoon in Quaker Street 9 ¾ Dr. Sonwat enters Herlock Sholmes‘ living room: “Ah, I see you have resolved the mystery of the twin rabbits.” Sholmes: “Yepp.” Dr. Sonwat: “Amazing. That must have been quite difficult and exciting.” Sholmes: “Yepp.” Sholmes: “Have a seat. Something new has come up.” Dr. Sonwat: “And that is?” Sholmes: “A man came here this morning, obviously functioning as a messenger. He introduced himself as ‘Bauwn Shauwn’ and he added that he spells his name ‘Bean Sean’.” Dr. Sonwat: “And you asked him whether he was from Celtic origin?” Sholmes: “Precisely. But apparently, he was just bad at spelling.” Dr. Sonwat: “What else did he say?” Sholmes: “His master, Lord Thomas Fortescue had sent him. Fortescue is requesting our help in a case where the police obviously has given up.” Dr. Sonwat: “And what happened?” Sholmes: “I guess something has suddenly disappeared in a mysterious way.” Dr. Sonwat: “Do we have a pattern here?” Sholmes: “Let’s find out!” (They depart to meet with Lord Fortescue.) At Lord Fortescue’s manor, Fetherstone Hall: Fortescue: “My good Sholmes and Dr. Sonwat – I am glad that you were able to come here at short notice. Inspector Destrale unfortunately thought that the police could do nothing in this case. So I put my hopes on you.” Sholmes: “Rightfully so. Now, what exactly has happened?” Fortescue: “Certainly, certainly, in short, I had it, but when I came home, it was gone and I am very sure that it wasn’t me.” Dr. Sonwat (to himself): “I have heard that kind of talk before…” Sholmes (nodding to Dr. Sonwat): “Lord Fortescue, could you be a bit more precise?” Fortescue: “Certainly, certainly. I have bought a precious diamond which I wanted to give to my wife as a birthday present. When I came home yesterday, I put the box with the diamond on this table over here and then left to the city.” Sholmes: “And when you came home the box was gone?” Fortescue: “Exactly. How did you know?” Sholmes: “And then the butler said something very strange?” Dr. Sonwat (to himself): “I have heard that kind of talk before…” Fortescue: “Exactly. How did you know?” Sholmes: “It is my job to know these things.” Fortescue: “Certainly, certainly.” Sholmes: “Can we have a brief chat with your butler.” Fortescue: “Certainly, certainly. I’ll call him.” (The butler enters) Sholmes: “Ah, of course, Bauwn Shauwn , I mean, Bean Sean. Now, please tell us, what you have sean, I mean, seen. Tell us exactly what happened to the box that Lord Fortescue had placed here.” Bean Sean: “Yes, Sir. But that was very simple and straightforward.” (The butler describes in great detail what he had witnessed.) Bean Sean: “The box was on the red table over there. The master had left but just a few minutes later, he returned, while I was dusting the room.” Sholmes: “Did Lord Fortescue say anything?” Bean Sean: “No, he just gave me a nod as if to appreciate my work. Then he took the box and left again.” Fortescue: “I most certainly did not!” Dr. Sonwat (to the butler): “Did you know what was in the box?” Bean Sean: “Of course not. Dr. Sonwat enters Herlock Sholmes‘ living room: “Ah, I see you have solved the mystery of the vanished golden dragon.” Sholmes: “Yepp.” Dr. Sonwat: “Let’s talk about Lord Rushinthought’s case.” Sholmes: “Fine. My dear Sonwat we have the very detailed, almost graphical description that the butler gave. Did you notice that Rushinthought was wearing different trousers and boots when he came to pick up the money?” Dr. Sonwat: “I must admit that I did not notice that.” Sholmes: "And what do you think?" Dr. Sonwat: "Lord Rushinthought must have changed his trousers while being away from home." Sholmes: "Only to change them again after taking the money? Then the other trousers must be somewhere around." Dr. Sonwat: "That is indeed a mystery. Which we need to solve." Sholmes: “I conclude that we have to visit Lord Rushinthought’s home again. And search the surroundings.” (Later at the back of Rushinthought’s home) Sholmes: “What do we have here?” Dr. Sonwat: “A dustbin. Or a trash can, if you are from one of Corrington’s colonies.” Sholmes: “And there is something special in it... Wait for it!” Sholmes (pulls something red out of the dustbin): “Well, not exactly trousers, but this looks a lot like Rushinthought’s uniform jacket.” Dr. Sonwat: “But this must be a copy as we have seen him wearing his.” Sholmes: “Precisely.” Sholmes: “Does Rushinthought have a twin brother?” Dr. Sonwat: “Not that I know of.” Sholmes: “Then someone is impersonating Lord Rushinthought!” Dr. Sonwat: “But who? Chapter 2: (Still at Quaker Street 9 3/4) - see previous chapter. Sholmes: “What exactly did your butler say?” Rushinthought: “He said that I had taken the bag with the money myself. But, of course, I hadn’t.” Sholmes: “I accept the case. Can we take a look at the crime scene?” Rushinthought: "Yes, yes, of course." (A few minutes later at the home of Lord Rushinthought) Sholmes: “Here we are now. Entertain us!” Rushinthought: "Yes, yes, certainly. This is my study. This is where it happened. When I came back from the horse races I put all the money on this table. Then I left to the city for further business . And when I came home, it was gone.” Dr. Sonwat: “I think we should talk to the butler.” Sholmes: “So you are the butler?” Butler: “Yes, Sir.” Sholmes: “What is your name? Butler: “My name is Thomas. I spell it Fdaines.” Sholmes: “I deduct that you must be from celtic origin.” Butler: “No, I am just bad at spelling.” Dr. Sonwat: “Tell us exactly what happened to the bag that Lord Rushinthought had placed here.” Butler: “Certainly, Sir. But that was very simple and straightforward.” (The butler describes in great detail what he had witnessed.) Butler: “Just a few minutes after he had left, the master returned. I was just cleaning the study.” Sholmes: “What happened then?” Butler: “The master gave me a nod so much as to appreciate my work, went to the table and took the bag that was lying there.” Dr. Sonwat: “And then?” Butler: “Then the master left again and I continued to clean the study.” Sholmes: “And what happened after that?” Butler: “Then the master returned home again and asked me where I had put the bag. But, of course, he had taken it away himself.” Rushinthought: “I most certainly had not!” Sholmes: “Fascinating. Robert, how long has Fdaines been in your service?” Rushinthought: “For more than 15 years now.” Sholmes: “And his service was always impeccable?” Rushinthought: “Yes, yes. But now he has gone mad, as you all have heard!” Sholmes: “Fascinating.” Dr. Sonwat (to the butler): “Did you know what was in the bag?” Butler: “Of course not. Prelude: A man in his home. He hears a noise and turns. "Who are you?" (end of prelude) Chapter 1 An afternoon in Quaker Street 9 ¾. Dr. Sonwat enters Herlock Sholmes‘ living room: “Ah, I see you have solved the mystery of the vanished silver ingots”. Sholmes: “Yepp.” Dr. Sonwat takes a seat: “Still no sign of Lady Hemsworth’s tucan?” Sholmes: “Nope.” Dr. Sonwat: “Well…” But he stops as he is interrupted by an unexpected knock on the door. Who can it be now? Sholmes: “Who can it be knocking at my door?” Dr. Sonwat: “Make no sound! Tiptoe across the floor. If he hears he’ll knock all day!” Suddenly, the knocking ends and in comes the well-known figure of Lord Robert Rushinthought. Rushinthought: “My dear Sholmes, did you not hear me knocking?” Sholmes: “Nope.” Rushinthought – looks puzzled. Dr. Sonwat: “That means that he did hear you.” Rushinthought: “You did?” Sholmes: “Yepp.” Dr. Sonwat (coming to Sholmes' aid): “But the butler has his day off.” Rushinthought: ““Yes, yes. I see. I didn't even know you had a butler. Well, friends, let me take a seat.” Rushinthought: “I think I have a case you should start working on!” Dr. Sonwat: “Would you like to tell us some more?” Rushinthought: “Yes, yes. Well, in short,I had it, but when I came home, it was gone and I am very sure that it wasn’t me.” Dr. Sonwat: “Would it be possible for you to be a bit more specific, if you don't mind?” Sholmes: “Well, Sonwat, our friend, Lord Rushinthought went to the horse race yesterday where he won a large sum of money. But this money has now disappeared – am I right? Rushinthought: “Yes, yes. Quite so. Impressive deduction!” Sholmes: “Well, it’s all in a day’s work for a detective.” Dr. Sonwat spots the newspaper on the table that has the headline “Huge Win for Lord R. as Tempest Comes in First”. Sholmes: “Now, where exactly did you put the money and how did it disappear?” Rushinthought: “Yes, yes. Let me tell you the whole story. When I returned home yesterday evening, everything seemed normal. “ Sholmes: “But the money was gone.” Rushinthought: “Yes, yes.” Sholmes: “Where exactly did you put the money?” Rushinthought: “It was in my study, in a bag. When I came home, the bag was missing. I had wanted to write something with Herlock Sholmes after the Marquis-storyline was finished and it took some time to develop the basic plot. I hope you will like it! -
It was a family feast. Captain Cookie, Commodore T. Spoon were at their mother's for some tea and biscuits. Somehow they all felt that something was missing. But they could not exactly tell what that was. Suddenly there was a noise at the door... ... and a strange creature with a red and white hat came in, dragging something behind him. "Did you plan this", the mother asked? Captain Cookie shook his head, his brother did the same. Meanwhile the strange creature had rolled a cart into the living room, filled with nicely wrapped presents. "Did you plan this?" Cookie and Spoon asked simultaneously. Their mother shook her head. "I guess this is the famous Christmas Monkey that was often talked about in Pontelli." In the meantime, the Christmas Monkey had begun to distribute the presents. ... and he even had a nut for the squirrel! A splendid time was guaranteed for all. Pharao Aapmosis I. (and his family) Unbeknownst to many historians, during the time of Pharao Aapmosis I., there was huge demand for bananas in Egypt. He is the second one from the left. They don‘t like to talk about him in Egypt these days. But he looked just like this. This creation was a part of a larger Egypt display at Brickmania Antwerpen 2022. (and in Flemish, "aap" means "monkey").

Finally the last touches have been applied to the great Cathedral of Pontelli: A lot of work went into this building and you can still spot the craftsmen around the mighty cathedral. Making those coloured-glass windows is really difficult! And these guys are probably just practicing... While the architect is happy with his finished work. Amazing, how many strange details such a cathedral has... Careful when you carry that! On the right: Some gargoyles are obviously being re-invented. "Verputzen" - what is that in English? I am planning to license this in some way Did anybody spot the monkey?

That is fantastic news. Corrington’s high society will be sooooooooooooo delighted to meet him. Interrogator: And I am a bit of a poker player myself. I sure would like to have a match with him some day! Lady Bonny (sighs) Some weeks later: Cut to a military reception in Belson, Corrington for a special guest. The Corrington Army never wastes an opportunity to boast some of their new uniform designs… The Marquis rushed past the guards and towards the officer in command, who had drawn his rapier. Obviously the Marquis was under the impression that the officer wanted to challenge him to a duel! Seeing that the Marquis was about to draw his sword and start a fight, the interrogator stopped him in the nick of time. Interrogator: No, he does not want to attack you. He has raised his rapier as a sign of honour! The Marquis calmed down again. (vous vous vous) Then they met in a fine hall in Belson for their grand match. Interrogator: Well, my dear Marquis, let me quickly recap the rules for our game today. We will play draw poker, as you seem to prefer it in Eslandola. Both players will be accompanied by a second of their choice who are going to survey the course of the match. You seem to have appointed Mr. Herlock Sholmes of Belson. I have chosen my friend Biff. Mr. Sholmes, is everything alright with the setup and the cards? Sholmes: Everything is perfect. I have checked the card decks personally before the game. Interrogator: And Biff, all clear from your perspective. Biff: Just fine. Had a nice wine. Was good. In the mood. Interrogator: Right, then let’s begin. We will play for exquisite gold doubloons. Marquis: (nods) The game commenced and both players won and lost small sums. Whenever a new deck of cards was opened, the Marquis had a tendency to lose – but he got better over time. Then – playing with card deck number three – the tension started to mount. The Marquis had already bet a nice amount of money and his opponent had not backed out. The gold coins were piling up on the table, besides that ugly vase that the interrogator had insisted on being there. It was a sure win for the Marquis. He had three of a kind and he was pretty sure that his opponent was bluffing, having nothing but four irrelevant cards of spade and one card of diamonds. All of a sudden the interrogator called out “Biff” and his friend Biff was surprised and reacted with a sneeze – which caught Mr. Sholmes attention … and the interrogator used this brief moment to slip the ace of spades from underneath the table! With his sight blocked by the vase, the Marquis could not notice this cheating move. So, when the interrogator raised the stakes again, he called. And suddenly they had both gone all in. The Marquis presented his three of a kind … … and with a malicious grin, the interrogator put down his cards one by one. Finally, the aces of spades. A flush. The Marquis had lost! The Marquis stared in quiet disbelief. - cliffhanger - - ok, let's go on - Just as the interrogator was about to collect the money, a sharp voice called out: “Not so fast, Lessiarty!” The interrogator, Mr. Lessiarty, froze instantly. Herlock Sholmes had risen to his feet and had fixed his eyes on the winning cards on the table: I knew that you would cheat at some point, Lessiarty! Lessiarty: How dare you! I have not cheated. I have not marked the cards! Sholmes: That is correct. You have not marked the cards. I have. Herlock Sholmes: You see, I had suspected you to try something sinister since I heard that you had been questioning Lady Bonny endlessly about my friend, the Marquis. I think you wanted to be sure that he would not cheat. And we all know that he doesn’t. Nor does he bluff. Before the game I have applied small markings to all of the card decks to be used. That is, every legitimate card on this table should now have a very small number “3” on its back, which can easily be seen using this magnifying glass here. Lessiarty (turns red) Sholmes: And if I start to examine those five cards now, I am quite certain that one of these cards will not have a mark on it. Which will make it evident that you have cheated! When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. Elementary, Lessiarty! With an angry cry of “Eeek” and “Vous Vous Vous”, the enraged Marquis jumped up from his chair and drew his sword! Lessiarty also sprang up as the raging Marquis was approaching fast! Lessiarty raised his arms, shouting: "Don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me!" But the Marquis was already upon him – and with one swift and well-placed blow he cut Lessiarty’s belt… His trousers fell down and an utterly disgraced Lessiarty left the place of his defeat running Herlock: No worries, inspector Destrale and my assistant Professor Sonwat are awaiting him outside. We have suspected Lessiarty to be a card cheat for some time. Now I could finally bring him down, thanks to you, my friend. The Marquis: (nods and grins) Biff (a bit belated): What has happened? Herlock (ignoring Biff): As one of the players was caught cheating, the pot goes to the remaining other player. That seems to make up a nice amount of money. I suggest we have some celebration, or say party. The Marquis: (nods and grins) (Destrale and Professor Sonwat enter with Lessiarty in chains) Sonwat: Party, I hear? Herlock: Yes, but do not let the Marquis find the drums! But it was already too late! The Marquis was drumming away enthusiastically - and he would not stop! The party lasted for three days … By the way, this is how Samba was finally introduced to Corrington. And also in Corrington, the Marquis was the talk of the town. The Marquis, however, seemed to take no offense. Since then, Lucy and the Marquis have often been seen together. They seem to get along quite well. I also deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meterologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. And what do you conclude? Marquis: Vous vous vous! Herlock: Oh, I see. Someone has stolen our tent! Being a very good listener, he was often seen in discussions with various noblemen and noblewomen One day he was invited to the King’s ball. A spectacular dance event – the highlight of the year. He was a quiet bystander in the crowd, when the dancers paraded into the ballroom, led by the unforgettable master of the Waltz Ed Frastaire. Just then a butler inadvertently stumbled into him, giving him a push, so that he touched the arm of the lady next to him to avoid falling over. Much to his surprise she – the Princess de la Rose – took this as an invitation to dance and quickly joined the parade of the dancers with him. Then another unexpected thing happened: the Marquis found that he could actually dance – dance quite well. It has been later described that he danced with an air of naturalness, almost instinctiveness – somewhat effortlessly, yet elegantly – the rhythm just was in his blood. And after a few minutes into the dance EVERYONE else had stopped dancing and EVERYONE’s eyes were on him and the Princess de la Rose. Even the King and Queen watched in astonishment. This event was long talked about in Oleon – at the court and in the streets. The Marquis’ fame rose significantly. But although he was now known for his exquisite dancing skills (you should have seen him when there were also drums!), he never accepted any of the many private invitations he received. The boat was still in terrible shape – and he was no carpenter, he was a sailor. So, just because of his seamanship and navigation skills, he barely made it to Oleon. Interrogator: Yes, you have already mentioned that. Lady Bonny: And this is when I first met him, later that same day in October We were sitting in this smoke-filled tavern, playing cards. The Nobleman, the Admiral and myself. The First Mate stepped in, looking as if he would like to join the game. It was a good point in time as that was when the Admiral had just lost everything to the Nobleman. The Admiral offered his seat to the First Mate, but the Nobleman raised his eyebrows and complained: We are playing for money, my friend. What do you have to offer? That seemed to be something new to the First Mate. He had obviously only been playing for fun before. After a moment of hesitation and with a heavy sigh he offered his sword. Slightly frowning, the Nobleman accepted the blade. And so, the game began. After a slow start, where he obviously had to orient himself and was playing very cautiously, the First Mate started to win small sums. He was becoming more and more confident. As if he could memorize where every card was that he had seen before. And then I was out. The cards were not in my favour that day. I sat back and watched. It was only the First Mate against that grumpy Nobleman. And the stakes were high. The First Mate risked every piece of gold he had won so far. The Nobleman cursed: A mere sailor is challenging me? Alright, I offer my title, as I do not have enough gold any more – is that accepted? The First Mate nodded in silence. They were both going all in. The First Mate won with a Royal Flush. He raised his arms in triumph. The nobleman angrily threw his glass to the bottom, tore the wig from his head and threw it on the table. He paused for a moment, then he said: What a disgrace: the Marquis d’Ape beaten by a mere sailor. But I will stick to my word. Here, with this letter you will become the next Marquis d’Ape. Then he turned and left. The new Marquis celebrated. He removed his sailors hat and put on the wig. He has never been seen without it since that very day. Then he was off to make his new title official. We all cheered! Lady Bonny: What he soon learned was that he had got nothing more than the title. The previous Marquis had lost all his wealth and fortune before – he obviously was a frequent but not such a good poker player But the new Marquis seemed determined to restore the pride of his old title! Lady Bonny: Well, one day in October they were on one of their …. merchant missions. Interrogator: … and then? Lady Bonny: Then the weather suddenly changed. The first mate urged his friends to return to their home port, but… Interrogator: .. but? Lady Bonny: Somehow, they hesitated. They lost time. Precious time. And then it was too late. Lady Bonny: They were hit by the full might of the storm. It was horrible. Wave after wave shook their boat. Then the waves started to roll over it. Interrogator (gasps) Lady Bonny continued: After what seemed an endless fight against the sea and the storm, the Marquis found himself washed on the beach of his home island. The ship was severely damaged – and his friends were nowhere to be found. It seemed he was the only survivor. He checked the island, he looked out to the sea but there was no one but him. He was alone. Completely alone. His friends were lost at sea. He never saw them again. Heartbroken, he set up two wooden crosses on the beach to commemorate his friends.
