    [MOC] Wolf's Watch

So... I'm not the world's biggest believer in enormous, Windsor-scale castles. Call me unambitious, but A) I like to design something that might be in the realm (for me) of building one day (given my finances, even small MOCs are ridiculously tough to swing), and B) I like isolated, somewhat forlorn fortresses located in the wilderness, as opposed to city-encircling mega-citadels. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to build the starter keep from the Kingdom's and Castles PC game, and while I was happy with the final result, I didn't like that it was based on someone else's IP - I wanted a "castle of my own," so to speak. So, three days ago, I started putting together Wolf's Watch. Originally, I didn't plan on doing anything nearly this ambitious, but the project kind of expanded as I built - I wanted to add a dungeon, and then once I had raised the keep up, it needed additional terrain to give the elevation context. But I am very happy with the final design - it really encompasses the heart of what I was shooting for: an English/Welsh-style small castle with heavy play features and a (relatively) low part count (okay, 5,000 isn't low, but when you're talking about projects like this, you can quickly see the numbers explode into the tens of thousands :P). First, some overview shots of the exterior: The keep itself features three floors, plus an accessible roof. The top two floors lift out over the first (which has a kitchen inside, but I didn't bother taking a picture of it since Bluerender's interior lighting is so shoddy), and are accessed via a swinging side panel. The second floor is a reception room which will showcase a few suits of armor and a throne (not going to cram the suits into the digital model); the third is the King's (and I say "King's," but I never intended this to be a full time royal residence - I am thinking more along the lines of a Baron or poor Viscount) bedroom, and features a bed, chamber pot, crown, fireplace, tea kettle, and so on. The castle has an extensive subterranean area which has limited access via the keep lifting up. Unfortunately, as mentioned previously, Bluerender's lighting for this kind of thing is downright poor. However, the left-hand side of the underground section is an area of haunted caves, with still drip pools, stalactites, stalagmites, and so on. The right side is a split scene, with two jail cells and a brick-built spiral staircase, plus the Forgotten King's Tomb. I intended for the tomb to be accessed via the caverns and not the stairs directly (some imagination is necessary), to give the basement a kind of adventurous, exploration-oriented design that hearkens back to Taran and Eilonwy mucking around under Spiral Castle in The Book of Three. The only independent non-castle-related structure within the outer wall is a blacksmith. I ripped off the mill wheel-powered auto-hammer design from 6918. The bone is part of some exterior scenicking which, along with a buried skull, is intended to represent a fossilized beast. There are hints of the caverns embedded in the sides elsewhere on the model. And that's pretty much it! As always, any questions, comments or critiques are most welcome!

    Winter Village: unwelcome visitors

Hereby I present my entry for the Winter Village contest. I had a lot of fun making this winter diorama, which happens to be my first MOC as well. UG_1 by bert marchal, on Flickr As you can see below, while attempting to expand the village, I soon hit the rocks. Luckily, I found a small gate. Always having wondered what is going on just outside the village, I decided to take a peek on the other side. UG_2 by bert marchal, on Flickr The poor fellow I found there must have been on his way to the village, probably to visit family or friends. ..only to find his way blocked by a collapsed bridge, while nearing the end of his long journey. Frustrating! Getting hungry, he somehow succeeded to catch a fish and decided to wait for help while having a provisional dinner in a nearby cave. UG_5 by bert marchal, on Flickr Soon however, the smells started to attract some unwelcome visitors. UG_3 by bert marchal, on Flickr And then the howling began... The torches should keep them at bay for the moment, but night will be falling soon and they won't burn forever.
  3. The lupo tower in the heart of Jeruna, a small province in Avalonia was built to watch over and protect the small but beautifull population of the Jerutscha wolf. But the Jerutscha wolf population has grown and they are no longer under protection. So the Lupo Tower has lost his initial function. The former guards from the Lupo Tower, stayed at the tower and lived a silent and happy live in harmony with the wolves! But with the rumors about the Algus, some clever Kaliphlin oil traders traveled around and tried to sell their overpriced oil. Also the Lupo tower crew get some oil. They don't know if the Algus really come to their peaceful land, but in case it would be nice to have some oil. Nothing tells from the cold of the north, and two Lupo men start even a BBQ on the middle floor of the tower. In their carelessness they also oversee the brother in his warm coat. What kind of news is he bringing from the north? ___________________________________________________________________________ Right side view Back view Left side view
  4. ~This quest is for chosen heroes only! If you wish to play, please herd over to the Rules and Discussion to learn how to do so! Thanks.~ The Party members, each at their own time found their way to the Albatross, a two story building of maple and oak, and pass through the small anteroom, passing by the fumbling clerk who tried to book them for room, to find themselves in the bar of the inn. Since it was midday, the building was relatively empty, with only two groups of patrons, and the ever-present Barkeep, still cleaning one of his cups with a piece of cloth. The Party recognised one group of Patrons as their benefactors. The Hinckwell employees were sharing stories as they emptied their glasses. The mustached Hinckwell was clearly fond of the alchohol, and apeared to be slightly inebriated dispite the early hour. His associate was speaking jocularly. The Hooded man spoke. "...So the other guy said, "it was the work of the mad wizard," and then I said... "I knew't!" The brown haired Hinckwell laughed boisterously. At the other table, two women (one rather man-like it attire and body-shape) seemed locked in discussion. "It's been fa' too long." Stated the bow-tied and vested woman in a pronounced 'Bronx' accent, a drink pressed against her lips. "Hold on." the woman stated, returning her attention to her drink. She shook it, her hand consumed by a ring of flame, and a the liquid began boilling. "I prefoir mine shaken and boint." She smiled, flashing an actor's grin at her associate. "So how's the mister, missus Lawrence?" She queried slyly with a wink. "It's not 'missus Lawrence.'" Stated the cloaked woman in black business attire with a cold, dissinterested, but boyish voice. The bowtied woman appeared shocked, but the sentiment was clearly exaggerated. "Miss Finch?" She questioned. "no." Stated the hooded figure. "Xanataci?" The woman wondered, actually surprised now. "Yes." "Your maiden name? My woid, what happened?" the incredulous woman queried. "We'll have time to discuss that later. Right now, I want to discuss a business proposal with you." The Hooded figure stated, her face cold.
