  1. Founded in 1912, St. John's College is the oldest residential hall in the University of Hong Kong. I lived there in the early 1990s and by that time the third wing did not exist. Thus it did not appear in this build. 2. Location: The University of Tiberia, Arlinsport, Tiberia Type: Royal Project Piece (This takes place sometime in 621) It was another pleasant day in Arlinsport. The well manucrued lawns of the University of Tiberia fluttered gently in the breeze, as Agnes Mesabi walked to a surprise meeting at the Mesabi Hall of Geology. A squat, and tough building, the Geology Hall was a recent addition to the University. It's construction, of course, was made possible with the new influx of funds the Mesabi family had charitably dumped into the University. While the Mesabi family was quite dreaded across the Brick Seas, their vast wealth and willingness to keep up appearances had lead them to dump large amounts of capital into Corrington's colonial educational institutions. This allowed for several educational institutions to add new facilities.... provided they put up with "Mesabi Shenanigans" on the premises. Agnes Count Mesabi's harridan of a wife, walked into the halls of the Geology building. Her stiletto heels clacked with each step, ominously announcing her arrival. In the research labratory, WTC Leader Karl Mordo chatted with a Professor of Minerology. "So you see, with these samples, we're hoping that we can identify a common pattern." Said Mordo gruffly. Agnes burst into the labratory. "Karl Mordo! My old friend and confidant. Can you guess why I'm here?" Said Agnes in a nail bitingly aggressive tone. "...so you've come to kill me then...." Said Mordo cooly. He reached into his holster, and drew a pistol. "At LEAST you had the decency to come do it YOURSELF!" "Hey, easy there Mordo..." said Agnes, a little slower, but no less agressively. "Let's talk this out..." With a quick motion, Agnes was behind the Professor, pistol in hand. "TRY SHOOTING ME THROUGH MY NERD SHIELD YOU ****!" She yelled, Aiming her pistol squarely at Mordo's forehead. [/url] The two aimed their pistols at each other for a solid 30 seconds, neither blinking. The Geology professor stood nervously, too afraid to say a word. A grad student cowered in the corner. "...So you're not here to kill me?" Asked Mordo mildly sheepishly. "What? No, I just thought I'd surprise you while I was here to giva a speech for the 'Women in Business' event." Said Agnes, mildly annoyed. The two lowered their pistols. The Geology Professor Scattered. "So, I had a proposal for the WTC to expand our business opportunities." said Agnes. "Involves some things with Oleon, involves the sale of some less than legal merchandise....." Mordo sighed. "You ran out of money in Namere again, didn't you?" "Look, overthrowing governments is hard and expensive! We're certainly not winning the hearts and minds at the moment. But I'm thinking throwing even more money at the situation will fix things." Said Agnes, rolling her eyes. Mordo grunted, and walked over to a chair. "I'm trying to use science to improve our prospecting, but I'm fairly certain I'm going to need to find a different professor to work with, thanks to your antics." Agnes ignored him, and handed him a piece of paper. "Lemme just get your signature, and I'll keep the fact you just tried to kill me on the down low." Mordo glanced over the document. "You really like this Namere thing." He muttered. He signed the piece of paper, and handed a copy back to Agnes. Agnes turned and left. "Oh, and if I wanted you dead Mordo?" She paused, smiling to herself. "I'd just hire someone to do it." FIN Thanks for viewing the build! This continues my work on the Royal "University of Tiberia" project that I've had going since.... 2018. With the current rate of progress I'm making on it, (about 1000 studs per year) I should be done in 2027! Honestly, looking back on my project writeup, I'm not satisfied with what I have their, so I'll probably get it fixed. If anyone is interested in helping, do pm me in the meantime. Regardless, enjoyed building this one. I originally planned to have it be set in Mesabi Landing, leading to a more squat look, but I didn't feel like the style was really working for that settlement. So, I changed up some parts of the build, and set as a part of this project. Storywise, this ties in with my long neglected TMCRA, with Agnes trying to overthrow parts of Namere. Karl Mordo is @Darnok's player character, and he told me that the story was fine, as long as " Set it some time in the past." Thus, the disclaimer at the beginning. I'm also referencing his many prospecting builds on behalf of the WTC. I'm sure this also would lower the IC opinions of everyone of Agnes Mesabi.... if they weren't already rock bottom. Anyway, thanks for viewing. C&C appreciated, and lets hope this royal build gets done!
  3. Location: The University of Tiberia, Arlinsport, Tiberia Type: Royal Project Piece It was a pleasant day in Arlinsport at the University of Tiberia. Birds were chirping, and students pleasantly milled about beside the administrative office. When suddenly, the sounds a maddened horse and rider charged towards the building. "MOVE, NERDS!" yelled Countess Agnes Mesabi at the top of her lungs, as she charged her loyal steed, "Buttercup" into the main concourse. Students dived to the side as she fired her pistol into the air, and Buttercup reared aggressively. Countess Mesabi dismounted, and slapped Buttercup on the hindquarters. Buttercup raced towards the nearest body of students as Agnes walked towards the door of the Administrative building. Meanwhile, An adjunct professor watched in horror as students ran from Buttercups clomping hooves. Countess Mesabi arrived at the board of regents meeting a timely seven minutes late. She dropped a parcel of papers onto the table, and coughed loudly. "You're late" said the chair of the department of sciences. "And why was there screaming and gunshots outside?" "I come here to do business, and all you want to talk about is screaming nerds. I thought you were professionals!" said Agnes crankily. "Also, don't worry, it was a blank." "Countess Mesabi, we're a bit... alarmed by your entrance, but let's move past that. You're here on behalf of the WTC to help the university with budgetary matters?" "Yes of course," replied Agnes. "The WTC is willing to give a large endowment to the university, provided you name a building or two after me, and help us offload some WTC products that aren't flying off the shelves like they used to. I see it as a win win." "Meaning exactly what?" Asked another board member. "Well, we have excess Horse meat to get rid of, some of it cut with low quality Giraffe. That of course can be put in the cafeteria. Also, we want to be the exclusive arms dealer to the UoT." "We Will NOT have our students eating WTC horse slop!" Yelled a board member. Wordlessly, Agnes pointed to the endowment proposal on the table. The Board members looked at it, and glanced at each other. A collective sigh filled the room. "Which building do you want named after you?" Asked the chair. "Here Buttercup!" yelled Countess Mesabi, as she walked out of another successful meeting. Namere awaited once more. FIN Thanks for viewing my build! I've been wanting to get this royal project done for a while now, and this is a bit of a start on getting back to it. This build took a lot of work to get right, it went through quite a few design phases before I was satisfied. The entryway is the focal point of the build, and is based off of the entrance to The Golden Cat, from Dishonored. I ran out of a lot of bricks towards the end, which is why the top is rather plain, but I think it turned out alright. I really tried to improve on some specific things from my last build. The road is definitely more worn, and I think it looks good, although perhaps a tad modern. I also utilized the trick of putting plates behind the windows to darken them, as recommended by Ayrlego and Evancelt. I'm not sure how well it all comes across though, and I may need to re-photograph some of it. I'm hoping I can spark some interest in finishing the royal project. Though, the stories around this project might be a bit zany for other people's characters, and cause some people to not be interested. Either way, it's always fun to write for Agnes at her worst. C&C appreciated, per my usual list of sins: I'm sure some bricks aren't fully pushed down, this one used a lot of plates, and so it's kinda fragile. Fleshies inhabit the same world as yellow figs. You can see the blanket under my white background in one shot. I have the same table, and bookshelves prefabs as at least 10 other builds. I take my photographs with my phone camera, a sun lamp, and a super bright bulb.
  4. Do you love LEGO? If not then why are you here?!? Do you love science? If the answer is yes then read on. In 2018 I published the book Particle Physics Brick by Brick which used basic bricks to explain complex science. I have loved delivering workshops throughout the UK using LEGO to bring my former field of research, particle physics, to life. I just wanted to share the book with you in case it is something you might be interested in. I have also recently started making explainer videos using the ideas in the book which I am regularly posting to YouTube. If your interest crossover both the worlds of LEGO and Physics I'd love to know what you think of the videos. If you are teacher or student I have made some educational resources to accompany the book as well - all information can be found at bit.ly/LEGOPhysics
  5. University of Quinnsville As one of the next steps towards building Quinnsville into one of Corrington's premier settlements in the new world, a large university has been constructed. Within the walls of the enormous structure, everything from advanced mathematics, cartography, and the sciences are taught. QV 3.6 by LM71Blackbird, on Flickr There are many classrooms on the first two floors and the third floor houses the resident students who are studying from abroad. QV 3.7 by LM71Blackbird, on Flickr Out front is a small garden and statue dedicated to the Secretary of Science, one of the most prominent figures in the Parliament of Science. ----------------------------------------- A build I have been working on for some time. It was originally meant to be a Royal property for the city of Quinnsville, but I lost the motivation to build an interior for such a large building. And, without the interior, it wouldn't qualify it for a Royal anyway. So now I intended to license it as a large property for the GoC mission 'Higher Education' for task #3. C&C are welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking! @Bregir @Ayrlego @SilentWolf @Captain Dee
  6. Location: Arlinsport Type: Royal University It was a cloudy day in Arlinsport, as the Luca siblings walked into the department of Politik, Philosophy, and History library, next to the Great Garden of Tiberia. The University of Tiberia by North White, on Flickr "Tiberia could easily have been Nameren, you know." Said Maria. "Do South of Balmin, if only we hadn't been at war with the Bremerens, we could have sent our ships and taken it for ourselves." The University of Tiberia by North White, on Flickr "Ah, wouldn't that have been nice, sister. A united Namere under Gonda. A pity it was the Bremerens who won the war." Replied Luca The two entered the library. The librarian shushed them without even looking up. The University of Tiberia by North White, on Flickr "Greetings, my friends." Said Princess Isabella of Gonda, "Though I regret circumstances are not as I wish they could be." The University of Tiberia by North White, on Flickr "We're alive, and that's what matters." Said the pricessess's attendant, Antonio Barsotti. "Alive, but broke, our forces scattered, and our resources exhausted." Said Isabella. The University of Tiberia by North White, on Flickr "If we ever want to take back our kingdom, we'll have to find new allies." Said Maria, "We're in a Corrish Settlement. Perhaps these, 'Corries' can be of use." "That incident in Carno set us back. We can't trust outsiders again. Not again." Said Antonio. The University of Tiberia by North White, on Flickr "Unfortunately, we must. I've reached out to local governance for resources. The only useful thing I've found is a flier labeled 'Captain Wanted' for a ship. seems some organization is taking anyone they can get. If we ever want to recover the throne of Gonda, we must begin wherever we can. Luca, see if you can get the position. Take whoever you need." Isabella said. "I'll take Nico, and Maria. It's going to be a chore, but baby steps." Said Luca. "Anything else to discuss?" The University of Tiberia by North White, on Flickr "Nico, you go with Maria and Luca, we've got big plans." said Isabella, calling the navigator over. The University of Tiberia by North White, on Flickr The Three left the library. The Librarian shushed them again, as they passed uniforms from some pointless war between Oleon and Corrington. They had work to do. FIN Thanks for viewing my build for the royal university of Tiberia! As I am spearheading the project, it would be a sin for me to not get something decent looking out. I can't wait to see everyone else's builds for the project. C&C appreciated, especially on the story. I hope to develop things in Namere more like @Keymonus did with Varcoast. Thanks again, and let's hope this is the start to a great project for Corrington and the Brick Seas as a whole.
  7. Location: Arlinsport Type: Royal University Corrington is well known for its appreciation of the sciences. So when Terra Nova was first colonized by the Crown, scholars and academics alike followed. It came as no surprise that the University of Tiberia was soon established in Arlinsport. While not as prestigious as some of the universities in the mainland, it has become a beacon of academic excellence nonetheless. The university is centered around four main colleges: Smythe College of Natural Sciences Prometheus College of Alchemy and Applied Sciences Zumbro College of Political Thought and Philosophy LaCoursiere College of Fine Arts and Music Together with some smaller colleges, these form the academic body of the University of Tiberia. Many of the finest thinkers, architects, explorers and artists in the New World have seen their stories begin here. The University has a massive garden complex, a large football stadium, and 15 different halls of varying size. Several laboratories are on the campus, developing technologies ranging from fertilizers to explosives. There are 4 large residence halls, but there are several fraternity and sorority houses that are considered part of the university. Additionally, other University owned buildings are located throughout Arlinsport, instead of on main Campus. The University has a soccer team, a rowing team, a math bowl team, and several other sports teams, and features a dozen clubs. The universities colours are red and white, with a lion centered on the banner. While it has no official name, most students refer to it as Tibby the Tabby - the mascot of the university! Banner Description: Help us to build a royal university in the city of Arlinsport! The college is being built retroactively IC, so your builds can focus on an earlier part of your character's story. Were they a class clown? A teacher's pet? Take this opportunity to fill in some backstory for a character or characters, or show college students today, in 618! Build Description: Builds should show any part of the college campus. This can include dormitories, fraternity/sorority houses, classrooms, gardens, offices, laboratories, or libraries. Your build must be of excellent quality, and low quality builds will not be accepted to the project. This will be decided upon by Corrish leadership. LDD is allowed, as well. Style Guideline: The University of Arlinsport is constructed of red bricks, with white accents, similar to Harvard. However, interior scenes should not be considered held to these standards. Remember, a creative entry is more important than fitting the style of the project. However, several outbuildings exist throughout Arlinsport, and these do not have to fit the style guidelines. Map guidelines: If you have a great idea for one building in particular, please post in this thread to reserve the building. Classrooms, Libraries, and other interior scenes, as well as garden scenes do not need to be reserved. Please name the hall you have selected, as well as the building number. If you change your mind about building, please announce so in the thread. 8. The Tale of Doctor Alfredson of Corrington: Chapter 1 Arlof upon Sea was a small Corrish town, one its main landmarks was it's prestigious university, It was not the most renown university in Corrington but it was fairly decent, if university league tables existed it would probably be quite near the top, or at least that what the board of directors would have you believe. The board of directors had thought that Arlof University needed something to to put it on the map ,as the saying goes, so when one of their doctors of ecology suggested going on a journey to New World, they fully supported him, hoping that it would bring fame and praise to their humble establishment. Alfredson however had plans of his own that he had to chosen not to divulge to the board of directors. Doctor Ragnar Alfredson stood out on the Arlof docks quietly waiting for his contact. The silk trader arrived right on que, Ragnar had been waiting for about twenty minutes before he arrived but this was due Ragnar's promptness rather than any tardiness on the part of the captain. "So, is there space for me on the Autumn Blossom?, I hear you're headed to the new world and me and my apprentice have the very same destination in mind." "Yes, we will be docking in Cocovia, but if you want more stops along the way then I'm sure you could afford them." "Do you have the payment?" Ragnar nodded and handed the captain a sack. "As discussed." It was lighter than the captain had been expecting, too light to be Doubloons at any rate ,but it bore the correct seal and seemed to be the package his superiors were expecting, they had not told him what the pack would be and he had naively assumed it would be mere coin. "The ship will be waiting out in ocean," He gestured to a small rowing boat, "you can use our rowboat to get across, oh and since you'll be the on voyage with me I'd like you to address me as Captain Yiroe" Ragnar nodded again in agreement as Yiroe left the dock house. He then went about making the proper preparations and found his apprentice Calder Norrington to help carry the equipment. They worked together to load up the rowboat and ended up having to make multiple journeys out to the Autumn Blossom. Ragnar was lucky that his fiancée Alice Elieasdottir was not as forgetful as he. She met him outside the dock house and brought him his compass, an essential tool which he had neglected to remember. "Aha, I knew I had missed something, thank you dear." "You're welcome, but I'm afraid that's not all you forgot..." "Oh" "You were going to tell your colleagues where to wish farewell from." "Yes of course, how about here?" "Sounds good to me." Ragnar looked down at his compass, musing. "Would it be better to call compasses space clocks or to call clocks time compasses?" "What? Oh I guess the time compasses sounds better." "I think it fits better if the naming system is uniform, yeah, time compass does sound better." Ragnar nodded. After they were informed, they came to wish farewell to Calder and Ragnar. ( from left to right :Alice Elieasdottir, Argus Wyld Professor of Archaeology,William Jayek head of the board of directors and chemist, Keith Marcoson Doctor of Botany, Magnus Pertwee Professor of Physics , Gwenive Dorn Professor of Military History and Angus Keltch Student of Economics.) As the others waved gentle Keith sound out asking for a souvenir, The little rowboat pulled back past the crowd as Calder and Ragnar neared the Autumns Blossom. "I mean both of you get me one!" "So you only want one but from the both of us." Ragnar teased Keith but all were in good spirits as the boat slowly drew out of sight. OOC: This is the first part of Doctor Alfredson's story I hope you all like it. C and C are welcome. (This is my first, introductory freebuild I hope I did it right )

    [MOC]: Winterfield Academy

Welcome to Winterfield Academy, the premier arts academy for all of your minifigs! Governed by Headmistress Elba Rieter, this academy specializes in the arts! The first floor includes a grand entrance hall with front desk and a platform for a train station (Behind the school are tracks on which the Orient Express can arrive). The first floor also contains the dining hall, a trophy room, and the grand spiral staircase that ascends three stories. The second story includes a large choir classroom, a picture-lined hallway, a store closet that I'll soon be converting into a lavatory, and Headmistress Rieter's office. And the third floor/roof contains a ballet/dance studio and classroom, as well as a large portion that I haven't decided what to do with yet. But I think it's going to end up being the dormitory. I'm also planning on possibly doing a stop motion video series set around one of my mini figures encountering mystery and murder at the school! So we'll see how that goes. This MOC is also up on LEGO Ideas gathering support! If you wish please go support it! I'm including the link here. https://ideas.lego.com/projects/c3ebdf4f-1c75-435e-b09b-3f23788b535a Any ideas for the third floor, suggestions, comments on this MOC are much appreciated, thank you! :)

The Stress of Leadership by Chance Reed, on Flickr The Stress of Leadership by Chance Reed, on Flickr --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wanted to expirement with lighting, so I tried photographing it in the morning (I take my pictures outside). Sometimes it looks good for certain builds, but I'm not sure about this one. I haven't been able to get the light to look like in my Minifigure series here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=105226 . If you guys have any tips, I would greatly appreciate them By the way, the mosaic is supposed to be a carpet with the four guilds and Cedrica in the middle. (Cedrica is blue and gold right?) I would like to claim UoP DoH for: - Mosaics - Interior Design Thanks!
  11. As Mpya Stedor is being named after the Stedor, the capital city of Science in the homelands of Lord Damaximus (Mpya is Swahili for "New"), the city had to have its own University. As coastal city, it is evident to have a Naval Academy located in the University. And as homecity of MAESTRO, the fine arts of Negociations is being teached just like Tradelaws. How do I get started? If you're a member of a Guild of Historica, just start building! If you're not, you'll need to join a guild first. See instructions in the first post of any of the guild threads. How do I post my MOCs? Post each MOC in its own thread. It would help if you prefixed the topic title with "UoP DoH"; also tag it with "Petraea University" and "Doctorate of Historica". In your post, be sure to indicate which subjects you would like this MOC to qualify for (up to a maximum of four). Then post a comment in this thread, with a link to your new topic. How does the Peer Review work? After you post an MOC, if four currently active Kaliphlin guildmembers approve of it, by posting comments stating "+1" or "I approve", then you're certified in that MOC's subjects. However, if three Kaliphlin guildmembers vote against certification, they can veto the approvals, even if four or more guildmembers approve. If someone posts a veto, they must also post a comment indicating why, and what you can do to improve the build so that it passes. I just built a great MOC (before DoH started) that covers some of the subjects; can I get credit for it? On joining the program, you may get four "advanced placement" credits for recently built MOCs. The MOCs must have been posted to Eurobricks on or after June 15th 2013. Just post a comment in this thread stating that you're joining the program, and you'd like credit for a previous build. Put in a link to the build (which must have been posted in GoH), and state which subjects you'd like credit for. It must go through the same peer review. Peer reviewers should post their comments in the MOC's topic, not this one. Can I use MOCs that I'm also building for another challenge or contest? Yes, you can. This program is all about improving your building skills, and if you do some great work for a challenge or contest or whatever, and want to get credit for it, that's fine. But make sure that it's really a good example of the subjects and techniques. Do I have to post the MOCs in the Guilds of Historica forum? Your MOCs must be posted in the Guilds of Historica forum or LEGO Historic Themes forum. It is OK if they have been posted somewhere else first. To ensure that most reviewers see your MOC, we recommend you post it in the Guilds of Historica forum. Can I just quickly build a bunch of mediocre MOCs and get my titles? You could, if you could convince the peer-reviewers to certify your builds. But you'd only be fooling yourself. And your mediocre builds would be up here for everyone to see. Is that worth a lousy title? This program is not about the titles, it's all about improving your techniques and styles, and getting you experience in building across a wide range of subjects. So I'm reviewing someone's build, and it's pretty good, but not stellar. Do I approve it? Tough call, right? Well, the goal of the program is that everyone who completes it will have demonstrated basic mastery of the techniques and subjects. That doesn't mean they have to be world-class in those techniques, but the quality should be high enough that you can say, "Yes, they know what they're doing when it comes to that technique." The key phrase is "basic mastery" -- you have to demonstrate mastery, not just crank out a small, mediocre MOC that checks the boxes, but on the other hand, that mastery is "basic", not amazing, or world-class, or even innovative. OK, basic mastery works for technique-related subjects, but how should I judge content-related subjects? When building for the content-related subjects, students should ensure that the build fully explores the subject. Since these subjects are not testing mastery of a building technique, students need to demonstrate instead that they can create a build that represents a well-thought-out and fully realized scene concerning the subject. Reviewers should expect that the build does not just present a small, standard representation of the subject. Let's take the example of the crop-farming subject. Is it enough to show a farmer tending to a single plant? Perhaps, if the plant and scene were really exceptional, but most likely not. How about a row of crops, with a farmer and a scarecrow? That's getting better, and if very well done, it could be approved. How about several rows of different types of crops, with several farmers doing different tasks (one weeding, one harvesting, one planting), a scarecrow, a farm cart and horse, a barn, and some good landscaping. Assuming the build quality is good, that is definitely a well-thought out build that well represents the subject, and would be easily approved. How long is the program? The program is currently open-ended. Work at your own pace. This is not a race, and you're not competing against anyone. It's about you advancing your building techniques and styles. I'm in a different guild; can I participate? Definitely! University of Petraea has a very diverse student body, from all over Historica. As long as you can pay tuition, you're welcome here. Speaking of tuition, what if I can't pay? No problem! See our financial aid office. You might want to bring a wagon to carry back all to forms you'll have to fill out. You may also pay in chickens, fresh salmon, and dark chocolate. How do we track who has been certified for which subjects and disciplines? You are responsible for tracking your own progress through the program. You should do this in the DoH Registrar's thread. Make one and only one post in this thread where you'll track your own progress. When you complete an MOC, edit your post and add the MOC. Once the MOC has been certified for its subjects, edit the post again, and update that MOC's entry to reflect the certifications. So your one post in that thread will have a list of your MOCs, and for each MOC, a list of the certifications achieved. You might want to keep a count of total certifications at the top or bottom of your post, along with any interim degrees you've achieved so far. What happens when I complete the entire program? You get the praise and admiration of your fellows! Plus, you receive the title of Professor of Historica, are qualified to lecture at the university, and can use the faculty lounge and golf course. Do I receive any titles after completing some of the program but not all of it? Various titles are granted or in common use for students in the program, although students generally don't use the lower-ranking titles (Apprentice, Novice) except in a derogatory fashion. Once you are certified in a subject, you're considered an Apprentice in that subject's discipline. If you meet all the requirements for a discipline, you are a Tradesman or Bachelor in that discipline. Once you acquire three Tradesman or Bachelor degrees, you attain the title of Master. Once you acquire two Masters (or six Tradesmans or Bachelors), you attain the title of Doctor. After three builds you're considered a Novice, regardless of whether you've completed any disciplines. After seven builds, you're considered an Adept, regardless of whether you've completed any disciplines. I have a great idea for a build; can I substitute this idea for a subject? Yes it is possible, although not common. You may apply for a substitution by sending a PM to the Assistant Dean for the DoH Program (NiceMarmot) or the University President (SkaForHire). Note that allowed substitutions are rare, and are mostly granted only for extreme shortage of bricks. What qualifies for the "Advanced SNOT" building subject? SNOT is Studs Not On Top, but you probably knew that. Advanced SNOT is a bit of a "I'll know it when I see it" subject. The reviewers should be flexible about techniques, but still hold students to a high standard. Recommended techniques and styles include having studs pointing in at least three different directions, using multiple types of SNOT bricks, and having studs at angles other than 90 and 180 degrees to horizontal. Using a few headlight bricks, Travis/Dalek bricks, or 1x1 bricks with stud on the side to put a few tiles or slopes at 90 degrees is not going to cut it. There are many good discussions of SNOT available on the InterScrolls; the University can recommend Didier Enjary's classic Advanced Building Techniques Guide. How do the roofing, wall, and tree subjects work exactly? Regarding the roofing and wall subjects: The text "Each technique is a separate certification" means that each technique can be separately judged -- a judge could approve one technique and deny another, even in the same build. They are each different subjects as it were, and count towards the maximum of four subjects per build. However, the trees subject is just one subject, as is the brick-built animals subject, and they only count as one subject each towards the maximum, even though you (may) have to build multiple trees / animals. In fact, it is acceptable to spread these subjects over multiple builds, acquiring partial credit with each build -- there is no need to have all the different types of trees in one build. Just make sure you ask in your final build for final certification, and reference the previous builds. If you do spread them over multiple builds, they only count towards the maximum per build in the final build. How big do my builds have to be? For most subjects, there is no minimum or maximum size. See subject definitions above, as some do specify a size. However, your builds should be large enough to clearly demonstrate your mastery of the technique or subject. In some cases this could be done with a very small build, but in most cases a larger build will be required. The University finds that most students have success with builds of 16x16 or larger. Remember the goal of the program is not to crank through the subjects with the minimum effort possible, but instead to push yourself and advance your own building styles and techniques. You should be pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. I built a huge MOC; can I get more certification in more than four subjects for it? Very large and diverse builds may request more than the standard maximum of four subjects. Each request will be reviewed individually by the Assistant Dean for the DoH Program (NiceMarmot) and/or the University President (SkaForHire), with input from the peer reviewers. Even if the build itself is huge, the area representing each subject must still be a decent size. In general, don't bother asking for an exception for builds that are smaller than two 32x32 baseplates. I spilled shadows all over my term paper, blurred it quite a bit, and wrote it on top of a picture of my bedroom; is that OK? The University is known throughout the world for its very high standards, both for its professors and its students. We expect the highest quality work from our students, and therefore will not accept work that is out-of-focus, dark, has distracting backgrounds, or is otherwise of low quality and care. Lousy photography is not subject at this university! Students are advised to take their time, get some good lighting, and at a minimum, put a sheet, towel, or posterboard/foamcore behind their builds. There is plenty of good advice on taking photos of builds on Eurobricks. Can I use an LDD build? The university prides itself on being on the leading edge of education technology! So LDD builds are acceptable for DoH credit. However, judging of LDD builds will be at a higher level, as you are not constrained by your brick collection. So the judges should have higher expectations and criteria for LDD builds. I don't like some decision made by the reviewers / the University / etc; can I appeal? We are working on developing a Board of Appeals for the program. More information to follow. Contact NiceMarmot or SkaForHire directly in the meantime. Or just revise your MOC and suck it up ;-) I posted a build, and requested certification in four subjects, but have been denied one of the subjects; can I ask for a certification in a new subject for the same build? You may retract a requested subject, even after it has been denied, and request certification in a different subject in the same build. For instance, if you requested certification in advanced SNOT for a build, along with three other subjects, but get feedback that your SNOT is not so advanced after all, you can retract it and request a different subject for the same build, e.g. roofing. You may do this twice per build. Can I build anything I want? Yes, but builds which bring the good name of Petraea University and its inestimable staff into disrepute are not permitted. Is hazing allowed? Absolutely. However, make sure you leave no permanent marks or damage. Will I be taught by Prof Frankenstein or Prof Leibniz? You should be so lucky! Faculty assignments are posted outside the Registrar's office. I'm a werewolf from Nocturnus; can I eat my fellow students during the full moon? Absolutely no consumption of fellow students, staff, or faculty allowed. Punishable by banishment to the Null Void. And believe us, we have professors who can definitely send you there! Is University of Petraea going to win the big game against Qarkyr Tech this year? Definitely! The Sand-Worms are going to stomp all over those lousy Miners! Go Worms!
  13. This is my second attempt to post this, the first was when the site went crazy. Since the semester is all but over, I have decided to share a short story I wrote for my intro to creative writing course. If this is in the wrong section please move it, I would have posted this in the old writing topic, but I don't know if that topic has "expired." Feel free to give feedback. To Come Upon “I’m telling you, they’re real,” Nathanial defended, “I had a computer expert check it out, they aren’t photo-shopped!” His body refused to stay still; rather it trembled as he struggled to stay stationary. “By ‘expert’ you mean your little sister don’t you?” teased John. The three of them were talking outside of their shared Roman classics, as Nate struggled to convince them of his picture’s authenticity. “That isn’t the point here,” Nate redirected, “You know she’s good at this kind of thing. The point is, aliens have invaded Titan!” The teen’s arms flapped wildly, his body trembling with excitement. “Invading?” Sam asked with a slightly raised eyebrow as she took another peek, “and you know they aren’t native…how?” “Look at their backs,” Nate explained eagerly, “you can clearly see some sort of breathing apparatus. They aren’t adapted to Titan, so they have to be from beyond.” He stared off in the distance as he finished, which was obscured by a highway wall. “You do realize that could be a part of their bodies,” she analyzed, “I mean, we have no clue what life on another world would look like, and some Terran forms of life seem metallic. And if they did have artificial air filters, could they just have damaged their atmosphere, and now require technology to breath?” “You don’t honestly think such complex life could be native to a world with no other forms of life!” Nate said in frustration as he leapt up and down. John had decided to use this time to resume going over his notes on the Odyssey, letting Sam and Nate discuss the main points. The whole topic was pointless regardless of whether or not he got involved. “No, I believe they are interstellar,” she answered, “or at least from Europa. But if they did have some sort of disaster, a mass extinction event could have destroyed their biosphere. It’s not likely, but we can’t reject it out of hand.” “No way are they from Europa,” Nate argued, “Life on Europa would live in constant darkness lit only by bioluminescence and geothermic light, encase with thick ice walls. There is no way-” At that point the classroom began to empty as the period ended. Nate’s words were lost over the din, save for a few odd sentiments. ------------------- “…And that’s why Wasp-8096 could kill Surtur,” Sam concluded. She and John were eating lunch at the moment, by a tree on their campus. Every so often passersby would give them an odd look or two, as the two of them debated things in their strange tongue. The two of them failed to notice the outsiders, save if a dog barked. “Okay, I get what you’re coming from,” John conceded, “although I think you mean universe 80920. But we don’t know if Surtur can regenerate, and if so to what extent can he heal. Plus it would be a suicidal attack regardless.” Suddenly the two of them heard hyperventilation in the distance, drawing ever closer. With a slap of his head John watched as Nate ran towards them, photographs littering his hands. “The aliens!” Nate gasped, his arms flaying madly as he slammed to a halt The two friends stared at Nate for a time, before Sam replied, “If Ares-616 died from being torn in two, then Surtur can die from having his head exploded. And I am pretty sure its universe 8096.” “Focus people!” Nate demanded as his arms became windmills, “the source in the European Space Agency leaked more images, you can actually make out their bodies now!” “Where are they even getting these images from?” asked John, “the last probe to Titan was seven years ago. Oh, let me guess. ‘Channel A,’ right?” “Exactly,” Nate exclaimed with relief, “350 images “lost,” each showing some aspect of the aliens and the ships. I mean, why would they make a redundant system but divide the pictures in two halves?” “Then why tell people they lost half their images?” Sam asked, “Won’t that just encourage conspiracy enthusiasts to probe? Besides, I doubt any of us know enough about rocket science to really judge what happened.” “And that kind of thinking is why no one questioned it!” Nate proclaimed triumphantly, before thrusting his images into their faces. Upon the images moved three creatures, each vaguely draconian in form. The aliens had a sharp beak, covered up by a silvery coat. Their whole bodies were doused in chrome, including the vent shaped growths on their backs. From what could be seen of their heads, their skin was quite pale. But their most distinct features were their limbs. Their hind legs were bird like, though with an added delicateness. They seemed almost hand-like in shape. Their front limbs however were multipurpose, with long webbing stretching from tip to body. While they walked the limb collapsed into a leg, which ended in a curved claw. But every so often one of them would leap off the ground, and their leg would shift into a powerful pair of wings. “…Space Dragons,” John said slowly, “Space Dragons. Have you ever read Iron Man or X-Men? Because this seems really familiar-” “Don’t mock me,” Nate requested, though his thunder was slightly dampened, “Look in the top right corner of this one; you can just about make out three ships.” “Oh yeah,” Sam remarked as she shifted her head, “If you squint and tilt your head, you can make them out.” John shrugged and complied, letting him just about catch sight of the supposed vessels. They were wide vehicles, shaped almost like manta rays. Their body was an ebony hue, though even that was barely visible against Titan’s sky. “And before you ask,” Nate said with barely contained glee, “I already checked, they still aren’t photo-shopped! Seven years…seven years of hiding the truth.” He almost danced, though he clasped the photos with a fierce grip. “Which won’t explain why we waste time fighting wars amongst ourselves,” John pointed out, not that he really believed those words. “Well technically we aren’t in the ESA,” Sam suggested, “our government might not have been informed. What are their members again?” “Are you two honestly not excited by this?” asked Nate as he fought to remain still, “How can you be so calm? There are aliens coming!” “Listen, we are happy for your family reunion,” John replied, “but it isn’t really worth getting excited about. Either they come and they slaughter/enslave us, or there aren’t aliens coming and we kill ourselves. Either way everyone dies, doesn’t matter how.” “They could be peaceful,” Nate offered, taken slightly aback. “In which case they will kill us to maintain interstellar peace,” John replied, “or send us back to the Stone Age.” “…We aren’t that bad,” Sam said awkwardly, looking at John with a slight hint of worry. “Don’t go “Tenth Doctor” on me,” John laughed, though his eyes remained just as weathered as before. Nate drifted away, before running off to spread more news. ------------------- “You okay?” Sam asked suddenly as the two of them were gazing into gloaming of the sky. The amber light became more and more engulfed by shadows, leaving only embers of illumination in the night sky. “Yeah,” John answered finally, “I’m fine. It’s just…” He trailed off, not wanting to give voice to his thoughts. “She had lived a long life,” Sam whispered finally, “A lot of dogs don’t even reach fifteen.” “But she ended up dead the same,” he sighed gloomily, as the sky before them was overtaken by ebony. John laid his hand over his head as he muttered, “Seventeen years. I don’t even remember a time Dusty wasn’t there. And now...what is the point to it? To all of this? If someone so innocent must still die…” “Memories,” Sam stated softly, “That can be the point. I mean, you won’t give up the years with Dusty for anything right? And she helped make you who you are today.” “Yeah,” John admitted, though a selfish part would rather that pain have never plagued him. “Maybe we all will die one day, but that doesn’t mean we should just give up. How many villains have tried to destroy all mutants? How many times have the Avengers faced alien armadas or twisted gods? How often was Ulysses set back in his trip home? They could have given up at any time, but they kept going.” “Heroes don’t stay dead for long.” “Skurge is still dead.” “Yeah, yeah he is.” The thoughtful silence the two of them experienced was soon shattered by Nate running up to them, his eyes wider than satellite dishes and his arms acting more like wings. “What is it?” John asked crossly. Nate was eerily silent, as he pointed to the right of the two of them. John and Sam followed his finger’s point, before their eyes grew in shock. A series of bright lights arched across the sky, flowing from the distance. The specks of illumination grew larger as they flowed through the sky, and gradually they took shape. Large flat bodies, with a long thin back. They looked like manta rays. As the alien crafted flew past the campus in the distance, Sam and John collapsed upon each other. The ships were entirely silently, it was like a dream. The two of them could only tremble, no matter what had been said, they were not prepared. Finally, meekly, they helped each other to their feet, as Nate gazed at the fleet, a loving smile fixed upon his lips. As the trio gazed at the fleet, their cellphones buzzed with texts. For a while the sound was lost to them, engulfed by the waves of ships and the growing panic of the other students. Screams echoed across the campus while others broke to their knees in desperate prayer. Finally the two youth’s spare hands found their way to their phones, and they escaped the armada’s view to harbor a glance. “What-what is this?” Sam managed as she took a better look at the text, her body quaking, “It kind of looks like ancient Greek.” There was a pause as the group dragged their eyes from the fleet to look over the font, made up of odd vaguely-familiar distortions of modern letters and other symbols. “They’ve been here before,” Nate said slowly, as his face exploded, “They’ve been here before!” He began to dance with utter wonder, a whiplash from the screams in the distant background. But neither reactions really mattered. As Nate jumped around wildly, John stared up at the ships with renewed wonder. “They’ve been here before?” he repeated, “But why-how-? “Doesn’t matter how,” Sam said with a smile, “although I would like to know “what.”’ John nodded slowly, as his mind began to imagine what brought these aliens to earth once before, and what made them return. And what made them spare humanity the first time. But for now, he could only watch the ships of a foreign sky.
