  1. Here's my entry for Category A of the Frozen Beyond contest. Hoping to get over our argument, I reluctantly agreed to accompany Gremlon on a trip to Mitgardia. Our destination was Falcon Manor - a vital fortress that was untouched by the Algus. Until now... After my last few small builds, it was nice to build a slightly larger moc again. The main technical challenge in this MOC was the rounded wall - it's a technique I've used only once before (in Zelpunra's Tower), and the fact that I built that section in about 2 days (rather than 1-2 months) made it particularily difficult. The right wooden section also had some tricky half-stud offsets that required a bit of subtle upside-down building. I also haven't done many snowy builds (I think the last time I did one was early 2014) so that was fun, used most of my collection of curved slopes. On a side note, photography was tricky with white on white. I really need to get a good light blue/grey/black background... Enjoy! Thanks for viewing!
  2. My entry to Category C of the Frozen Beyond Contest Before the Algus arrived, Morkerna was a bright isle, warm and peaceful. But then the Algus came. Morkerna has been reduced to a frozen wasteland. And it is to this scene that I come, returning from my adventures in Mitgardia. The land is desolate, cold, destroyed. Anger brews within me as I turn and see a pair of Algus walking toward me. I look for anything I could use as a weapon, but there is nothing. Frustrated, I grab the first thing I find - a flower - and throw it at them. The two stop. A horrified expression comes to their face. Could it be? I grab another blossom and throw it. And, to my utter surprise, it happens again: the algus seem stunned. Grinning, I begin bombarding them with flowers, watching as they fall to the ground, moaning. It seems that the way to defeat death is through life. This was a fun pair of builds! Showing both how the Algus are changing the weather and how to stop them is a challenging task to combine together, so I decided that the former half would be most effectively captured with a before and after. I was originally going to try to do a minifigure scale version of the watermill for the "after" scene, but I couldn't come up with a waterwheel design that I liked (and it ended up that I wouldn't have had time for that idea anyway), so I decided to replicate part of the landscape in the back corner instead. The second build (snowy scene) was quite rushed, but I'm still quite pleased with how the snow and rocks turned out, and I learned from last time to use a blue background The snow and rocks are both surprisingly complex, with tons of SNOT and offsetting. At one point while building the rocks, half of it exploded, and the complexity was so great that I actually had to look at a WIP photo to see how it all went together (and even with the photo, it was still tough to figure out how to put it all back together) The other MOC was designed around that house design, which I came up with during the summer but never actually tested until last month. This build is much more complex than it looks, which is partially why it ended up taking almost 2 months to build... The micro watermill is based on the use of a bar as a corner beam. After that, the rest comes together with some SNOTted tiles and fiddly techniques. The roof, connected with a few clips, was one of the hardest parts. I also really like the look of the river next to it; the SNOT allows for some smooth shaping, and the slope looks pretty nice too. The windmill is a bit simpler, but it was still pretty hard to get a nice tapered shape with a variety of tiny round structure techniques. (this moc is also on Lego Ideas; support it here!) Overall I'm pretty pleased with how these mocs turned out. Hope you like them
  3. As Algus patrols begin to appear on the borders of northern Avalonia, the effect are far reaching. Snow clouds drifting from the north reach the hot Kaliphlin winds, the result is rain, rain falling in the wither woods turning the landscape from shades of reds and browns to a more lush, green forest. Lord Parimere meets with one of the guard captains, commanding one of the wither wood outposts. Guard Captain: Sir, do you think the Algus in Mitgardia could cause snow to fall in southern Kaliphlin? it would be a disaster! Lord Parimere: If snow began to fall in Kaliphlin... Well as you say, it would be a disaster. The Algus must be stopped! Guard Captain: I await you orders sir. Lord Parimere: Well for a start we can send a detachment of cavalry north to assist Avalonia. It could then be followed by soldiers on foot. See to it Captain. Guard Captain: At once Sir. 2 weeks later... Kaliphlin soldiers are helping keep the argus at bay in Avalonia. It is hoped that the wither wood will dry out soon, we can't have Kaliphlin turning into a second Avalonia can we? Main images. Drat, I accidentally typed affect instead of effect.
  4. Sometimes it's just plain hard to be a frozen beyonder... especially when you're on spy duty or something... They really have no idea why, but somehow their approach is always noticed and the're spotted... Oh well, there are some problems involved in carrying winter around in your back pocket! Nevertheless, Uridius is quite unconcerned (he's always unconcerned, for that matter!) Finally got the interior to this thing finished! This is my Category A entry to the Frozen Beyond contest, and was (minus the interior) an entry to CCCXIII's large miscellaneous - and yes, I know it doesn't stand much of a chance in that quarter, but it didn't fit anywhere else! Credit goes to SK for the awesome bridge design, thanks for viewing, C&C are always welcome!
  5. My entry for Category A of the Frozen Beyond contest. Elmd and his guards patrol at mountains in Mitgardia, protects nearby villages and hunts Algus forces which threaten the villages. Those who are caught end up in captivity in the Worenthon tower until it arrives guards from Valholl and take them in the jail of the city Valholl.
  6. ... let's celebrate! The Algus have turned into the "melted beyond". Celebrations throughout Mitgardia continue. Duke Fasel and the Duchess Faseline (right) are celebrating the famous magic rabbit gloves that allow thaumaturgical control of the Mitgardian Dragon (left). Rabbit supporters and friends have been invited. (The story so far) ... and Colonel Samuel Marron appears with flowers as the special guest of the evening! In the "Captain Braunsfeld's part of the Algus Saga" you are here: Part 11 1) The Beacon of Bruns Fall 2) Defending the North 3) Southern Comfort 4) Help from a Nobleman 5) Two Minor Victories 6) Water does not stop them! 7) What's that coming over the hill? 8) Where the Rainbow Spell came from 9) AppleCalypse Now! (incl. "Walk like an Algussian") 10) The Victory Party 11) Celebrate Good Times, Come On! (That is probably enough of this ...) C&C welcome!
  7. In the far north of Mitgardia there exist a species of ice dragon, they originally helped keep the Algus at bay but the tables have now been turned and they are now being hunted by the Algus.
  8. It snowed last night, which was strange for summer, even for Mitgardia. Erik was shoveling some of the snow off the path when Olaf saw the Beacon of Marek burning. Leaving the pea soup at the watch fire, Olaf grabbed a branch from the fire and lit the beacon of the Bay of Storms as he wondered if it had anything to do with the summer snow or the rumors of snowy white demons. Hopefully he'd see the beacons of Arcium and Daydelon light up soon in the distance. I'd like to request UoP credit for: Landscape Design - studs up rocks & cliffs Some more angles on Flickr, C&C appreciated!
  9. While Wyndor was busy in Treacleheim, the mayor of Dalig Ulv sent word to his men on the mountain that a terrible evil known as the Algus had been seen near Dalig Ulv and that they needed to light the warning beacon. They lit the beacon and hoped that word would get to the rest of the guild in time to warn them of the coming danger. The next beacon...
  10. Shortly after rediscovering the ruins of the old watchtower, Alva and her men begin cutting down trees to rebuild the tower. Casks of food and equipment are placed outside until such time as a barracks or other fortifications and shelter can be established. The important thing for now is getting enough of a view of the surrounding countryside to make the tower worthwhile. After a few days, Alva is surprised to see that they have visitors. A pair of elves of the Briar Clan from the nearby Woody Hills come upon the camp saying "No, no, no... this won't do at all!" Though they are unarmed, they don't seem anything less than hostile as they look on the tower's woodcutting operation with utter horror. They explain later that the trees are younglings, the children of a particularly sacred and ancient Giant Pine. Though Alva's men counsel her to ignore the elves and drive them away if necessary, Alva thinks about Jarl Asbjorn and decides on a more diplomatic solution. Days pass in stalemate. The elves are happy to see Alva has ordered the men to not cut any more trees down, but they are also failing to help her find a suitable solution to the problems of shelter and industry required to fortify the location. She needs a solution that means not abandoning the tower nor insulting the Briar Clan in a time when Mitgardia cannot spare the blood for petty or avoidable grievances. Such a solution doesn't seem feasible for the time being... BONUS SHOTS: Flickr

    An Icy Attack

I tried a new rockwork technique (for me anyways), that uses technic bricks and pins to tilt each column of rock. And I did a hinging wall again, for the first time in a while, on the tower. It had been another uneventful morning for the two guards stationed at the Noror Watchtower, besides an unusually cold wind, everything seemed normal. The guards were on edge however, for there were many rumours of strange happenings in the north of Mitgardia. It was Kapp, the archer, who first noticed a group of figures approaching the tower. "Look there," Kapp said, "can you see if they're friends or foes?" "They seem to blend into the snow, but they could be clansmen on their way to the village," Svigi replied. As the group advanced toward the tower, it quickly became apparent that they were not clansmen. The odd figures were clad in white, and there seemed something unnerving about them. Kapp and Svigi readied their weapons, and eyed the oncoming band with apprehension. When they were within earshot, Svigi called out: "Halt in the name of Mitgardia! What is your business in these lands?" They offered no reply but kept on towards the tower, Kapp fired a warning arrow in front of the group, but they paid no attention to it, and continued their relentless march towards the tower. By now the two guards were quite sure the menacing squad meant only harm, so Kapp and Svigi prepared to hold the tower. But instead of storming the tower door, one of the party lowered his strange looking axe toward the tower and began making odd noises. The Mitgardians looked on in disbelief as what seemed to be a stream of ice began flowing toward the tower and then surrounding the walls. Kapp realized in a moment that the spectre meant to trap them inside the tower, and quickly headed for the door, calling to Svigi to do the same. They burst outside, knowing only too well that they had no chance of overpowering these new enemies, but determined to give their all defending Mitgardia. More pictures: link C&C welcome
