  1. It seemed like just an average ordinary day in the Jungles of Gorr... That is, until this thing came along! The scientists back at Petraea University called it Rhopalocera Lagargander. But most of us would have called it a Giant Butterfly... complete with frazzle-haired rider! A figless top view: It took years for the natives to figure out how to ride the Giant Butterfly, and it took even longer for others to catch on, but now that they have, this will likely be just the first in a long line of butterfly mounts finding their way into Historica! Not only are they good for speedy aerial transportation and getting a bird (or butterfly's) eye view of the situation, but their flashy colors will be sure to attract admiration flitting along the streets of Barqa or Petraea! Please note that the base actually has very minimal overhang, it's not 16x16 but 14x14 to allow for the otherwise seriously overhanging bamboo leaves. I'd like to claim Brick-Built Animals (Agriculture and Zoology), and Waterfall (Hydrology) UoP credits for this build. Thanks for checking 'er out, I'd appreciate your opinions on how the half border, half overhanging-plants looks, particularly with the inset black. There are quite a few more pictures on Flickr, several of the base without the Lagargander from various angles. And yeah, so much for a purple dino...

    Mount Up! Ice Mole

Long ago in Treacleheim the Dwarves of Mitgardia used Ice Moles to dig their larger passageways for them. They were raised from birth by trainers and could be commanded with clicks and hoots. They are a rare sight in Mitgardia now. But some Dwarves still raise them and use them on the north side of the Mitgardian mountain range. More pictures on my flickr!
  3. My very very last minute entry A rare species of bird found occasionally in Mitgardia, the Giant White is actually quite docile and easy to tame - if you can catch one. They are extremely fast, and can even run faster than an ordinary person. However, using a trap specially created for them, it is possible to catch them, and they are very loyal if well trained. I would like to recieve UoP credit for: Brick-Built Animals - (Agriculture and Zoology) C&C are welcome!

    Mount Up! Great Snowy Ram

Rams are commonly bred for Dwarven riders in the higher elevations of Mitgardia, where even dwarf-bred ponies find the going difficult. Over time, ram-breeding descended to lower elevations as well, with the creatures proving equally adept as mounts and beasts of burden in the flatter terrain of Mitgardia's valleys and tundra. Largest among the Dwarven rams is the Great Snowy Ram, also known by some as the Frost Ram, originally from the western mountains of Mitgardia. Chiefly bred for battle, these beasts are capable of climbing steep slopes with ease, and can gain tremendous momentum in a charge over even rough terrain. With the amount of force their heads & horns can bring to bear against other objects, there is little wonder why the dwarves of Mitgardia tend to avoid employing handmade battering rams in sieges; it's far simpler & more effective to send in ram-mounted troops in turn one after the other until the enemy barrier lies shattered beneath their hooves. Still primarily raised in the west, they have found their way across the realm, even finding use among human travelers and mounted units. I built this guy the first night of the mini-challenge, immediately inspired by the contest and the mention of Warcraft (the Stormpike Battle Charger and Swift Brewfest Ram are two of my favorites among the ground mounts in the game). "But that was weeks ago!" you might say; I wasn't happy enough with it. The first horns I made were a bit more organic, but didn't get the look I wanted. The ram was made largely from studying the Legend Beast Lion for structure, and then liberally stealing joints and some other parts from both it and the Legend Beast Eagle. I'd sit on it a few days, then tweak one part or another until yesterday when I reworked the rear legs, and then redid the front legs today right before snapping new pics. Hope you enjoyed!
  5. These creatures are use by the nomad people of the Tatullians who live in the Westersands. Being the relatives of the common armadillos, they were domesticated by the people of the desert many centuries ago. The Tatullians depend of these animals greatly and use them in various fields. Since their skin is thick, it is hard to harm them during a battle. Their riders wield long spears to stab the enemy from the height of the Tatullo. The most distinctive feature of them comes from the armadillo heritage: they can curl up into a giant impenetrable ball, which can be used as a cover during a fight. It withstands common arrows or spears, but Greek fire or other heavy attack can hurt these creatures, so Tatullians don’t use them as living shield when their loved ones can be in serious danger. Tatullos are surprisingly balanced when they are curled as pictured below, so they can be used as “outposts” when no higher grounds can be found in the desert. The bond between the mount and rider is very strong. During the heavy sandstorm Tatullos surrounds their master to protect them from the harsh wind that would surely cost the human’s life. That huge body guards the fragile one… (strangely they have orange eyelids) Sorry from my Mitgardian brothers for not building this in the North, but the natural environment of the armadillos required that. Disclaimer: As it is a digital build, is not considered to be an official entry of the Mini-challenge. I just wanted to show this. I planned to build an animal that I find very cute, and not seen to often in LEGO form. Building the “curling mechanism” was quite a challenge. And if you want to punish someone, force them to use these ball-joints in LDD. It has unlimited possibilities, but making the right position is more time-consuming than in real life.
  6. Tundra Bulls are hairy, smelly, vicious and ferocious, lumbering brutes that live in the northern tundra`s of Mitgardia. But fortunatly, they also aren`t to bright, making them suitable to become tamed by the barbarian tribes to serve as pack animals or war mounts. When steered into battle, the `driver` usually does no more then whip the beasts into a frenzy and then hanging on for life, as the bulls charge wildly forward, trampling whatever they meet under their massive feet, or try to skewer it on their elongated tusks. Friend or foe are threated equally though in most cases, so usually the bullriders are put a fair bit forward of the battlelines... Hope you like my first attempt ever on a `brick build` beast...
  7. Knowing there's no time to waste, Eindrin races the eggs north to the stable where he is apprenticed. His faithful steed, Kensley, is barely an adolescent chobo but still strong enough to carry Eindrin and the eggs at a dizzying speed across the snowy landscape. "Hie forward!" Eindrin shouts into the wind.
  8. Pictured: The Elusive Chobo With Rider, near a Wintergreen Tree circa Spring Thaw Being a flightless bird of prodigious size prized for its great speed and endurance as a riding animal. Known for its distinctive "wark" vocalization, its fondness for certain greens, and its tendency to shed its trademark yellow plumage in favor of coloring complementary to its surroundings. Habitat and Ecology The chobo favors the weather-locked valleys of south-east Mitgardia where the mountains protect slivers of green, rich land from the worst of the harsh climate. The chobo is an amazingly hardy beast, however, and is able to survive the harshest climates though breeding seems to become more difficult outside of the chobo's natural valley habitat. Some have speculated that this is due to the lack of a special root vegetable that seems to be heavily consumed by chobo during their breeding season. The primary diet of Mitgardian chobo is the leaves of the Wintergreen Tree. These trees are plentiful, reaching heights amenable to the reach of the chobo's long neck. Traditional Historican Usage The chobo lacks the agrarian temperament. Ranchers and farmers find them difficult to use as beasts of burden. The chobo is too hyper, furtive, and skittish about weight. However, they make superior racing mounts and are also used extensively by light cavalry, mounted scouts, and couriers. Chobo meat is considered a delicacy by some, though its eggs are inedible to most humanoids. The chobos feathers are prized writing quills, but often too large to be turned to this purpose. Their feathers are occasionally considered lucky or prized by southerners for their decorative qualities. Legends and some scholarly documentation exist to suggest that the chobo was once far more widespread in Historica. However, due to over-hunting or the delicacy of their breeding, the chobo has become rare and vulnerable. Some conservation-minded Mitgardians have attempted to promote the chobo to secure territory in warmer, more hospitable areas so that they can be bred. Some interest has been generated for the chobo's potential as a warfare mount, particularly some early evidence that they can be bred and trained for heavy, fast-moving cavalry of a caliber beyond the horse-mounted units favored throughout Historica. In Kaliphlin, chobo are highly prized for racing but do not seem able to breed in most of the region due to its arid, dry climate. Plumage Variations Chobo tend to be a bright yellow but one of their most legendary attributes is their tendency to breed offspring with different plumage when bred in a region of Historica outside their native north. In Nocturnus, red and black chobo have been seen. In Avalonia, green and blue. In Mitgardia, there have long been legends of white chobo adapted to the snow but a specimen has never been confirmed by the natural philosophers of the University of Petraeus.
  9. My dearest Lady Vansier, Further to your request about Feathered Dragons, I have compiled a brief report for you. I trust you have found it attached to this damned undead Carrier pigeon. Feathered Dragons come in all shapes, sizes, and indeed degree of feathering. It is a point of contention amongst the Learned Zoology Professors at Petrea University as to whether each is a distinct species, or merely an individual of a larger species. It is, point of fact, rare to find a specimen, that is willing to be studied. Shorter of temper than a Mitgardian Bearded Lady with untamable armpit hair, the feathered dragons are known to attack anything within sight. One such dragon, more specifically, a member of the Rakath Feathered Dragon sub-species is owned by the esteemed Lord Vladivus of Nocturnus, and I had the pleasure of studying it first hand, whilst a painter produced it's likeness, which I believe should be attached to this carrier pigeon as well. Note that most of the body is covered in green scales, whilst it is the black wings that are feathered. This one was tamed by Vladivus himself, and it's rumoured that he wrestled it one on one into submission. Fearsome chap this Vladivus. Anyway, this specimen does not breathe fire, but excretes venom through it's teeth, thereby giving it's bite a rather lethal efffect. Yours, as ever, A half-crazed Special Envoy of the Head Professor of Zoology at the University of Petrea to Nocturnus, Dizak Khan. P.s. The indomitable Lord Vladivus insisted we send you a portrait of himself stood by the dragon, because, well, he's heard of your beauty. Here he is, in all his armoured half-undeadness. My sincerest apologies. So, my entry for the "Mount Up!" Challenge, my first attempt at a brick built creature. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be- learnt a few things. C+C welcome!
