  1. Hi everyone, Sorry for the self promotion, but I think this will be interesting to you guys. I have created some software that can turn any image into a Lego Mosaic. I am trying to build a website around it so that anyone can use it. Right now, its a prototype and a Kickstarter project, but it can be a reality soon. Please check it out http://kck.st/1seNrR2 -Jake

    MOC: The Milkmaid

My recreation of Vermeer's famous painting, c&c appreciated. It helps to step back to see the colors blend. This is my second attempt at a Vermeer LEGO mosaic.
  3. “There it is.” Dressed in smuggler clothes, we approach our destination. Just agent An and me, two pilots, on a rapid reconnaissance mission while the rest of the troops continue to search Ord Mantell. There’s only a small chance we will find him here. But the files on the datapad have led us to this once beautiful temple, hidden between the forests on the surface of Bothawui. They are rumoured to be infested with Rebels. Still, nothing indicates this place is of special importance… not anymore. “See that antenna hidden on the roof? We’re here alright... Yes, here is some kind of hatch. Let’s go in and take them by surprise!” Things always go so quickly with agent An. Frightfully quickly… “We aren’t wearing these smuggler clothes just to blow are cover the very second we enter the place. You don’t even know what we’ll find. It could be a Rebel cell wiped out by the Bounty Hunter. Or it could be a whole battalion of Rebels. If you’re not careful, you drop right into a sarlacc pit.” “What do you propose then, genius?” My colleague can be awfully sarcastic. Like a little boy robbed of his favourite Ackay action hologram… “Why don’t walk in casually? Pretend to be one of them, whoever is down there. Talk them into giving you the evidence. Why would you make this a massacre?” “Oh, I see… What if I go in and… improvise, while you stand guard here. Someone has to watch my back. Just blast anyone who makes a fuss here…” Sarcastic as his proposal may sound, I consent. I’m not getting involved in whatever happens down there. And the chances someone comes here are slim. “That’s what we’ll do. And if someone shows up here, I’ll… improvise.” He already threw open the hatch and descends the stairs. A muffled cry. I’m not staying here to find out from who. I’m not going to stay here to witness yet another tragedy. I don’t want to be part of this scene of death. I turn away. That temple… it seems like it is consecrated to life, to nature. Those two beautiful columns, with a closed bud and an open flower, the geometric patterns evoking foliage… I wonder what it was used for, what it all means. Yet, I’m attracted to it. It’s strange how nature is destroying the homage to itself. And even then, there might be a meaning to it all. This really is a sacred place. A reflection by… [soNE Ep. VI] 4 - What's the meaning of all this? by Bert.VR, on Flickr That was close. I got behind this rubble just in time. I don’t think those Bothans have seen me. But what now? What if they enter the hatch. I can’t just kill them… they might be civilians. I don’t know how it will help me, but contacting Goatm is the only thing I can think of. Our communication only makes things worse. Below, there will soon be an even greater ruin than up here. Gunfire and cries. The Bothans seem as distressed as I am, and decide to leave quietly. I guess they don’t want to be in this as much as I. So far for giving my colleague back cover. [soNE Ep. VI] 4 - Ruins among ruins by Bert.VR, on Flickr I can think again. So it is true: there really are… or sadly were Rebels down there. How did they get involved with the bounty hunter? Why would Boba Fett bother to steal a genuine Rebel datapad somewhere? Surely, a smaller clue would have done to blame the Rebels for that atrocious deed on Ord Mantell. Unless… he had it already with them, stolen it from Rebels that he had encountered. Maybe the datapad still holds some information. It was never meant to be investigated, but that might be the reason there is still useful information in there… It doesn’t take me long to find what I’m looking for. Indeed, the mission of the Rebel this datapad once belonged to, was to track down Boba Fett, in an attempt to rescue a certain Solo. So the Rebels are after the bounty hunter as well, at the same time. What a coincidence. At least, they have reason, unlike our own absurd mission… The truth is simple and astonishing. Our mission isn’t to get Boba Fett and deliver him some ridiculous ‘Thank you’ card at all. Sure, finding the bounty hunter is our priority, but the reason is something else entirely. This mission is a mere excuse to get to the Rebels. We only want to track the bounty hunter to know where to find the Rebels. It isn’t about finding him, it’s about finding those that are searching for him. Our real bounty, are the Rebels… Ruins. But why? Why weren’t we just told that we were hunting Rebels? Why did they try to conceal the real purpose of this mission from us? Is it to give us a false feeling of safety? Is it so that we ask as few questions as possible? Or is it to make us forget what we’re actually doing, to turn us into mindless machines? Why? I don’t know why. But what I do know, is that this is intolerable. One cannot just conceal a war from the people that are suffering the consequences! If there is a war, you can’t hide it. People have the right to know what’s going on. So that they either can support or resist it. There’s a difference between people that live to ignore the war, and people that live in ignorance of the war. But neither of them can have an opinion, neither of them gets listened to, neither of them gets a chance to stand up and change things. And both of them should be awakened. It’s hideous to hide things from people, without hiding the consequences for them. If people don’t know what’s happening, they have no chance of fighting back. Hiding these things, silencing them, is a crime. It is just like that bounty hunter, who’s example the Empire is apparently obediently following. He commits an atrocious crime, and walks away, blaming it on someone else, so that people are powerless to fight back. It’s like blaming the supernatural for something you did, so other people can’t do a thing about it. It’s hiding what you did behind an unbreakable façade. And that hiding, is a crime. And it has to be stopped. There’s only one way to break this wall of ignorance down. People have to know what’s really happening. Somebody has to tell it to them. No, not somebody, someone far away. Everybody. I have to tell the world what’s happening. Maybe that’s my purpose in life. It’s a nice feeling to know that… Of the whole world, I already informed one, myself. Next up, someone that has to know what he is doing himself… Boba Fett. ___________________ LDD file is available right here. As you might have noticed, the story is a collaboration with goatman461. The link in the middle leads to his entry, as the story could be inserted there. Be sure to check his fantastic entry out as well! And thanks a lot for the inspiration, goatman! With 1411 bricks, this is a rather parts intensive MOC (there are more pieces in the creation, than there are words in the enormous story above, 1133 words to be exact). That's due to the different patterns, on the wall and in the floor. When I look at it in reverse, there could be less, with areas of the ground that are already covered, but with this tight deadline, I'm leaving it as it is. Apart from the different patterns, I also tried to incorporate some extra nice features. I'm very pleased with the columns, and I tested the design in real life, so they're absolutely clean, and maybe I'll post a tutorial someday on how to make those shafts. I admit that the tree is probably a very fragile construction. I already tested this technique, but i can't assure this particular configuration will hold, so I hope you're fine with the fact that the idea is possible. The roof construction is overly complicated, but I like the way the bricks form nice patterns, so let's stick to this fragile design. There are also some features that aren't clearly visible on the pictures, like some cracks in the ceiling and ornaments towards the roof. You can check these out in the digital model. So I hope you like the MOC and the story, as I put a lot of work and thought into it. Let me know what you think. PS: I hope the story made you think once again, and I would be very pleased to know what you think the 'hidden' meaning of the temple (and the way it is destroyed) is (yes, I really put a meaning in there!). Cudos to the one that gets it right!

Built last minute for Brickworld this year. The mosaic measures 48x144 studs and is comprised of around 7500 pieces. Enjoy!
  8. Hi all. After some work I finally transformed a "quick and dirty" utility to a usable program. Utility is the one that RomaBrick (my group of AFOLs) uses for some big mosaic offered to visitors for building at our LEGO fan events. You can see some mosaic in action here (Flickr) and here (Flickr). Here the main window Resize and cut dialog. Color reduction and conversion to LEGO palette (color names are available in italian and english). BrickMosaic can: load your photo resize to a desired size reduce colors to a palette chosen from LEGO palette generate a mosaic made by baseplates (8x8,16x16,32x32,48x48 stud) filled by bricks (1x1 or 2x2 stud) generate instructions for building, listed by baseplate, in an OpenDocument Text file (OpenOffice writer format) generate a "wanted list mass upload" for Bricklink, to buy bricks. Program is in Java and works on any platform. Manual (english and Italian), program and instruction template are in the Sourceforge program page: https://sourceforge....ts/brickmosaic/ Happy building!
  9. Lego Mosaic - Girl with a pearl earring (Vermeer) 樂高名畫 - 戴珍珠耳環的少女 Hi Greeting ! Long time no posting in eurobrick. It is my new Lego Mosaic Recreation No.2 "Girl with a pearl earring". Now I have the special hobby to collect the Art paint masterworks which it is recreated by my own lego. I like "Girl with a pearl earring" very much. It seems the girl is looking foward to you and both together. Let s know more about the painting first , from wiki : The painting Girl with a Pearl Earring (Dutch: Het Meisje met de Parel) is one of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's masterworks and, as the name implies, uses a pearl earring for a focal point. Today the painting is kept in the Mauritshuis gallery in The Hague. It is sometimes referred to as "the Mona Lisa of the North" or "the Dutch Mona Lisa". It is the original painting "Girl with a pearl earring" at 1665 by Johannes Vermeer. I used ~8000 lego pieces to build up my recreation. The size is 1000x800mm. I got the difficult point that it is quite not easy to simulate the Vermeer's masterwork original one. I try the serveral methods. At last, I found the error diffusion technique to complete my expected mosaic. My previous No. 1 recreaction "Starry Night" is the dynamic mosaic. This No. 2 is different and like as the static painting. And you can see a young girl dressed in an exotic turban turns and gazes at the viewer. Her liquid eyes and half-opened mouth impart the immediacy of her presence, yet her purity and her evocative costume give her a lasting quality, unconstrained by time or place. Arnoldus Andries des Tombe purchased this work at an auction in The Hague in 1881, for only two guilders and thirty cents. At the time, it was in poor condition. Des Tombe had no heirs and donated this and other paintings to the Mauritshuis in 1902. Now it is located in Mauritshuis, The Hague. More recent Vermeer literature points to the image being a "Tronie", A tronie (Seventeenth century Dutch for a "face") is a common type, or group of types, of works of Dutch Golden Age painting and Flemish Baroque painting that shows an exaggerated facial expression or a stock character in costume. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tronie To instead of wood plate, pearl board is another good alternative. Turn back to discuss my recreation, it is generated by the error diffusion. I can tell you it's advantage that I can control the lego plates selecting with the narrow color range to complete the mosaic art and it get good simulation of her face, liquid eyes and mouth. But, if you think more , it also get the disadvantage. http://kecskebak.blogspot.hk/2010/11/la-mode.html My color container. I completed the part of face, cloth first. It is easy to build the black background in last step. It is my home studio! It is 50% working . I try different colour for the pearl earring. For my view, it is the good presentation with using the simple white & grey colour in the soft black background. I spent long time (serveral months) to complete my work & I enjoy the processing. It is almost 80% working. It is my another funny creation name as "Dream Room". In my dream, I live in a elegant mansion with a Vermeer painting, White grant piano, a comfortable sofa, Pets. It is joined in the HKLUG gathering 2013 in Hong Kong. Thanks all lego buddy. I am happy to get this moment picture with my wife. I gather much of information about Vermeer and his painting, Hope you will like my creation and get the interesting for the article. 10. I'm hoping to build an approximately 4 foot by 4 foot mosaic of the Lego logo. I've been looking for a solid, easy-to-use mosaic-creating software but have had no luck. PicToBrick looks like it would be good, but the tutorial is really poor and I have had a difficult (actually impossible) time working through the interface. I have Photobricks loaded on my iPhone, but I can't see where it would give me any directions to use when building the piece. Are you aware of any other ways I could complete this project, and if not, have you seen any PicToBrick tutorials that are understandable to someone who doesn't have a computer science degree? Any other insights on how to complete this project would be really appreciated - thanks in advance for your help!
  11. I created this as a Christmas gift. It is only my second mosaic and still simple studs-up, but I used some plate layering techniques. I think my next mosaic will be SNOT, one of these days. Kamen Rider is a Japanese series that's been running for many many years. Tackle is part of the show from 1975 with the name Kamen Rider Stronger. Tackle Mosaic
  12. Here's my latest MOC: Bright sunlight filtered through the intricate stained glass of the Hall’s windows. The cold stone brick walls and floor of the room soaked in the warm illumination. Around the Hall, courtiers stood in small, casual groups, talking of politics and court gossip. Suddenly the great wooden doors at the end of the Hall burst open. A fully-armored knight strode in; the king jumped excitedly to his feet. “Your highness,” the knight said with a bow. “I bring news of the western front. I have ridden all the way from the township of Ellithshire to bring it. The war goes not well! All the countryside is ravaged with brutal warfare. Reinforcements are desperately required!” Breathing heavily from this exhortation, the knight gazed about the room, his grim countenance silencing the many whispering groups of excited courtiers. The crow-shaped crest atop his helmet bobbed up and down with each breath; it almost seemed alive and ready to fly away. After a moment of thought, the king called aloud to the captain of the guard. “Captain! Send messengers to the villages. Issue a call to arms to all military age men. Once they are gathered, we ride off…to war!” The excitement in the court couldn’t be held in any longer. Wild whispers rose to shouts as the courtiers suddenly realized the gravity of this proclamation. The war was no longer just a distant rumble; it had now grown to a mighty roar! ________________________________________________________ I came up with a lot of new techniques for this build, including a ton that I didn’t use. I probably have enough unused techniques to build another throne room. (hmmm, if only there were some kind of contest going on right now that I could do that for…;) Anyway, thanks for viewing! :D Soli Deo Gloria! :)
  13. Large Mosaic of the Sydney Opera built by the visitors of the ExpoLorraine exhibition in Nancy (France). The picture makes 480 pixels times 224 pixels and the mosaic is built using 420 16x16 baseplates fixed magnetically on a four panels stand. 14. Bow ties are cool! Especially when they are made of LEGO. I've been a fan of Doctor Who since its re-vamp in 2005. So I just had to do something for the 50th anniversary. So here's my take on Matt Smith as the Doctor. It took me about a week and a half to build -- or two and a half months because I had to put the "blueprints" aside for a couple months while I was busy with LEGO Cons and commissions. Any how, enjoy! http://modelbuilding...17/11th-doctor/

  16. For the Fana'briques 2013 exhibition, we have propose to the young (and not so young) public to build a giant mosaic representing the ruin of the Andlau castle with the Spesbourg castle in the background which are located into the Vosges Mountains in France. The mosaic correspond to 512 times 256 studs square built using 512 16x16 studs square baseplates and something like 50000 bricks. The baseplates are fixed on the magnetic stand using magnets glued onto the back of the baseplate. This was particularly appreciated by the young builders who had the possibility to add themself the baseplate they have build. The stand in made with 4 panels (2.06 meters high and 1.03 meters wide) making an angle of 22.5 degrees between two successive panels giving more relief to the mosaic. Finally, the mosaic includes two kind of resolutions : a low resolution using 2x2 bricks for the forest and a high resolution using 1x1 bricks for the two castles. Some more pictures and high resolution ones into this album. Enjoy.
  17. For the Fana'briques 2013 show, I have designed a 294 x 96 mosaic based on the Hobbit movie : It uses 3 colours (black, dark grey and light grey) on white 48x48 baseplates. The building has been done in one day helped by a couple of friends (Sandra and Sébastien B.), my son Alexandre and my wife Clara : SCASD. Enjoy.

    War Machine Mosaic

144 x 128 studs ~40,000 pieces The mosaic is made using stacked transparent plates over a black background. My previous outing in this technique used only trans clear. This mosaic sees the addition of trans red plates to create the background effect and portions of the outer ring of the reactor. Trans clear areas range from 1 to 5 plates thick while trans red areas range from 1 to 3 plates thick. There are some opaque red plates used for the eyes and the center of the reactor. Trans Red was too difficult to see in these areas. This will be coming to NILTC's show at Helen Plum Library in Lombard, IL this weekend (April 27th and 28th) Main view Angled - The contouring is very noticeable around the shoulder harness in this shot. Full album is available here.

MOCathlon 2013 - Category 4 - Fail like a Boss "We have all seen it, people trying to do crazy things that would look totally awesome - and then CRASH, BANG, SMASH! What a failure! Build us a 16x16 vignette showing an epic fail. YouTube is great inspiration for this! To cater for viewers' sensitivity, minifigures are not allowed to be shown as dead in this category." Clutch builders. yes this does fit in the 16x16 limit, on a diagonal. this was fun too build, although challenging, mosiacy sort of thing is not one of my strengths, and having the size limit made it harder. anyway hope you like it! enjoy!

    LEGO logo mobile

Had fun playing with this idea I had for a mosaic after seeing a hanging mobile that formed an image when the display swung around just right. Ideally this is hanging from the ceiling with strings but you get the idea. The file is little big so the link goes to flickr. Enjoy! Nick http://www.flickr.com/photos/43138245@N07/8559999949/in/photostream
  23. 120 x 96 Studs The mosaic is built using stacked trans clear plates on top of a black plate base. The image itself peaks at 5 plates high. These areas can be seen in the collar, lapel and some areas of the face. This shows a the contouring a little better. Full set is available here.

    What were the Mosaic sets?

Does anyone have any information on the Mosaic sets sold in 2003? I'm talking about the sets like 3443, k34431, k34432, k34433, and k34434. According to the entry for 3443, you could send in a picture and LEGO would turn it into a mosaic. Could you do that for all the sets, or just 3443? Also, did LEGO change the contents of each box for the custom ordered one, or did you have a few hundred pieces left over? Could one order them from the catalogue at the time, or did you have to make a trip to Legoland? Thanks, any help would be appreciated.
