Location: F10 Arium Major Tags: Science, Land Vehicle // PERSONAL DIARY // So as it turns out the turtles were actually the infant state of some aliens that inhabited Arium Major. The babies had made a distress call which just so happened to mess with human brains in a weird way. I guess they were nervous because from the signal intercepts they had gotten one corporation seemed to eat anything they could get their hands on, another corporation was of a warrior culture and therefore a threat, and as for our own corporation they feared we would take them as pets. Which I feigned surprise at and explained that as a scientist I was simply attempting to better observe them. It turns out that these aliens, they called themselves "Ter Tahls", lived underground on Arium Major because they liked to keep a humid environment. They also hoped it would keep our corporations from bothering them. Surprisingly they let ED-208 keep his gun as they took us into their subterranean living space. I guess the fact that we were massively outnumbered meant they were pretty secure in allowing him that bit of security. Once underground one of their elders, "Tor Tuss", came to guide us around. He explained that they had learned our language while studying us and from the signals they had intercepted. I was excited to tell him all about Dr. Long and how great she was and how he had to meet her because I was sure she would be so happy to help his species. He nodded and said there would be time for such things later. I was a bit disappointed because I wanted to show her all of this and tell her right away so she would know and be impressed with what I had discovered. I would off course leave off the psychotic episode I had where I imagined her with flames shooting out of her hand. And the panda. The Ter Tahls had a very advanced setup underground, it was quite impressive. I was sure that Dr. Long would love to learn more for our own scientific knowledge. Maybe we could even leverage their knowledge for the betterment of our own species! We headed out onto a landing platform and awaited a supply skiff that would take us to another part where Tor wanted to show us more of their incredible facility. Though we were vastly outnumbered and quite alone with an alien species, having ED-208 with me was reassuring. It was good to have a companion on this journey. And I knew just how excited Dr. Long would be and how valuable she would find me after I reported all of this to her! Extra Pics:

Location: D10 Tags: Spaceship, Ground vehicle, mining Spacer Steve is his exploration fleet through the Hamilton Belt. He needs practice before his training begins. The Council of Five has assigned Pangolinus as his trainer as Spacer Steve has little piloting experience. The exploration fleet consists of three ships. The Sal class science vessel, the M.C.F. Firefly, and the M.C.F. Scythe exploration vessel. Chogg chart a course to the Jake Atter asteroid mining station. We need to resupply the station with goods and provide protection. There have been several Dust Demon sightings. Captain, Chogg thinks that is illogical. Chogg, I’d appreciate it if you don’t say that ever again…. Deploy Stinger Squad. Crew we are approaching Jake Atter Station Yee haw! Boy are we glad to see you! You must be Jake. Yup that’s me. The mining is going great. There be awesomnium on this rock. Them MAD drillers are gonna drill all the way through. We be see’n dust demons though. Them’s be mak’n us a wee bit nervous. We have some guns but not enough to be stopp’n them. Great news! Location: A08, Crentium Tags: Land Vehicle Double D's log 18: I've been testing a lot of speeders lately. This latest one, the MANTI-Ray® Speeder is the most fun to drive, and that's partly because it goes faster and hovers a bit higher than the others, making it better for navigating through rocks and doing bigger jumps! The MANTI-Ray® Speeder also has the ability to be remote-controlled, though there are still too many "quirks" to be effective in combat, let alone controlling more than one at the same time. Depending on the success of the MMT® line, the development team will either further its efforts to expand the remote-controlled technology to include hovering speeders or stick with non-hovering vehicles. ~ DD out ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Of the speeders that I have made, this one was the most fun to build, mostly because of the front shaping.

Location: D10 Tags: Science, Vehicle, Land Vehicle Well, it wasn’t me who forgot to charge the batteries! Yes it was! I specifically remember you saying “I’m going to charge the batteries”. What?! I definitely remember telling you to charge them! You don’t get to tell me to do anything! Ah, so you admit that I did tell you to do it! No, I’m just saying… Will you two please shut up. We're stuck here until they rescue us, so just be quiet. … … … … This is all your fault. Is not. Is too! Shut up! … … … … Well, this whole experiment was a waste of time anyway. We drilled for hours and didn’t find any awesomnium. Might have found some if someone had charged the batteries. Someone like you? When they find us, you two are both walking back. Location: C10 Marden Tags: Land Vehicle, Military, Exploration Double D's log 17: It's another week on Marden, but this time I get to test out a new kind of remote-controlled weapons system. I get to drive a sweet tank around in the snow and blow up things (mostly snow). The tank is part of a new lineup that MANTIS is doing - MANTIS Mini Tanks (MMT). Apparently you can control many of these tanks at once. What's also neat is that there are cameras on each tank can be seen on the controller's screen. I can definitely see these being very useful should MANTIS need a bunch of heavy-duty inexpensive tanks that pack a punch! This tank in particular comes equipped with a snow plow just in case. I wonder what other accessories it can have... ~ DD out --------------------------------------------------------------------- I like how compact the tank is, and I'm really pleased with the treads marks.

Location: Workshop 01, MSS Titan, In orbit around Marden Tags: Building (Spaceship Interior), Military, Land Vehicle 20 Septembrinali 3815 Moose: "So what have you brought me down here to see?" Thorne: "Some very special designs of my own, that will help me, erm, I mean MANTIS, rule the galaxy." Moose: "But this workshop is for the basic maintenance of basic maintenance and janitorial droids?” Thorne: "Indeed it is. In fact we are currently working on obsolete JanDroid100TM models." Thorne: "Good work Simon!" Moose: "I still don’t get it? Why old droids, and why is he spraying the droid white instead of black and lime?” Thorne: "It’s Octan white of course. Did you not hear about Jurin II? Octan are susceptible to explosive devices hidden inside cleaning apparatus! And since these jumps though Kawashita dominated regions are taking us closer to Octan’s area of operations we need to be ready!" Moose: "Erm…" Thorne: "And here is the finished product, looks like the latest JanDroid300TM, the vacuum even works. We send it into the local Octan resource extraction facility and then, BOOM!" Moose: "Erm…isn’t the dynamite strapped to the back a bit of a giveaway?" Thorne: "Chief Accountant Long wouldn’t approve funding for anything more sophisticated. She called the work ‘pointless’ but I’ll show her! Just wait ‘til she sees the JanDroid500 in action." Moose: "But they don’t make a model 500?" Thorne: "They will when they see my designs! Here, take a look at this holo-disc." Moose: "What the…?" Thorne: "I’ve doubled the size of the design to permit operations over more rugged terrain. On top are twin plasma cannons and it can carry equipment for our ground combat forces. To top it all off it can be controlled through the same neural interface as our aerospace combat drones." Moose: "You want me, to ‘pilot’ this?" Thorne: "Well, only if we don’t have time to train our drivers on the neural interface control system." Moose: "…okay…but…erm…why does it still have the vacuum attachment?" Thorne: "Ah…hmm…for clearing the battlefield of the remains of our enemies of course…?"

Location: C10 Marden Tags: Land Vehicle Double D's Log 16: Well, the Kawashitan Commander got away because I didn't realize we were so close to a Kawashitan military base. I narrowly escaped on the X-P1 speeder. In fact, the entire last week was a close one as MANTIS barely got the upper hand. The good news though is that A08 was in MANTIS hands. I guess I'll have to find that commander some other time, though we did find out why Kawashita was trying to go through D04. Anyway, I am now on Marden - a cold, snowy, rocky planet. It's just me and a prototype speeder that's supposed to be able to hover very close to the ground when needed and skip across the ice and snow. It even has a transformation function if I ever feel like going really fast...which is most of the time for me. Though while recording this log I'm in the default mode. My mission this week is pretty much cover as much ground as I can. MANTIS installed some M.A.P. device that basically draws a map on where I've been and does a rough scan for non-natural materials within 100 meters. Basically, I drive and it creates a map and locates things like Kawashita bases, drones, and the like. Since I can go so fast, even if Kawashita spots me, they won't be able to catch me (or track me). It is quite the fun ride. Even though the speeder reaches high speeds, it is equipped with a auto-stabilizer system that keeps the driver balanced even if doing a steep banking turn. It's awesome! I'm also supposed to be reading this domination for dummies book. I don't get how it is supposed to help me, because the first chapter is all about taking vacations, drinking milkshakes, and having supposedly reliable robots do all the work! How could any corporation gain an advantage by doing that! Perhaps driving around counts as a "vacation?" I guess I'll see. ~ DD out ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm really pleased with how the speeder turned out! I think it's neat that it slightly resembles a dogsled in its second mode since it's designed for snow. It is fun to swoosh too!

Location: A08 Tags: Science, Vehicle, Land Vehicle So all you need to do is head towards any signs of life. Smaller creatures can be collected by the arms and brought aboard for study. If you come any plants or larger creatures, just drive straight into them. The M.A.N.T.I.S. Death RollerTM will cut them up and send the pieces through the scanning bed where they’ll be automatically analysed. And if we come across any Kawas, sir? Well, we had to cut some corners building this thing. It’s entirely possible that the brakes could fail and lead to a ‘tragic’ ‘accident’. Understand? Heh heh heh, yes sir! Sir, I’m picking up a small life form nearby. Excellent, let’s go get it. Got it! Good. Bring it into the containment area. It doesn’t look particularly promising. No. But it’s clearly an infant. Run the life cycle simulator to see what it’ll look like fully grown. Simulating… I don’t think this is what we’re looking for sir. It doesn’t seem to be dangerous at all. But it is giving off an intense low frequency sound wave. Maybe a distress call? Maybe. But I hardly think we need to worry if more show up, they’re clearly harmless. Ah, this is the life, eh Schmidt? No CEO nonsense to worry about, just driving across an alien planet doing science! There’s nothing that can stand in our way! Uh, sir? What? You might want to see this… Damn it! Sir? We’d better stop. Although… Uh, sir? *Sigh* Yes, stop the engines. Sal, what the hell is this monstrosity? It’s my new mobile lab. You authorised it, remember? But you cut the budget in half. That’s why it looks so ugly and doesn’t even have a roof. Roofs are expensive Sal. Anyway, what are you doing with it? We’re looking for dangerous creatures we can harness to drive Kawashita off the planet. And the reason you have to be here is, what, precisely? Uh… Damn it Sal! Location: Freegate - G02 Tags: Civil, Land Vehicle, Spaceship, Exploration While dropping supplies to mining startups on G02, Pilot John Hannibal noticed a strange circular formation on a glacier. Because Cantillon was already headed for the surface with OS-461, Hannibal decided to tag along with the Mercy Brandy's current land speeder to investigate the anomaly. There certainly appeared to be a man-made structure carved out of the ice and Hannibal circled around to get a closer look. When he did, he was "greeted" by some green-faced man, yelling in a foreign tongue orders Hannibal generally understood. Both stayed still, the green man with some sort of pike and Hannibal with a revolver he was not sure if the native had noticed. As the moment tensed, Hannibal caught the shadow of a ship coming overhead. Cantillon should not have the 461 in this sector. Hannibal risked angering the native to radio the Octan pilot. He didn't want to see the native killed, over such a simple misunderstanding. Cantillon - "Hannibal, I'm not in that sector but I'm on my way. Keep your comm open, the Mercy Brandy is coming in overhead." Hannibal stomach sinks. The mysterious ship drops in. The native doesn't move; eyes locked on Hannibal; pike back and ready to fly. He appears to be human, but the markings on his ship are neither Kawashita nor M.A.N.T.I.S. The pilot approaches. Hannibal remains silent, keeping the native within his field of vision. Location: A08 Crentium Tags: MANTIS, land vehicle AG: The Chase Continues by David FNJ, on Flickr Double D's log 15: My plan to chase the Kawashitan commander off the ship worked! I managed to follow him through another gate, and eventually we crash landed in a remote place of startling colors. Each ship had its own X1-P1 Land Speeder, so the chase continued. A few moments ago I shot down the commander's speeder, and now he (hopefully) won't escape again... These X1-P1 Land Speeders are pretty nifty! I think I'll keep it if I can find a MANTIS base on this planet. ~ DD out ----------------------------------------------------------------- Some of you might remember seeing this a few weeks ago on Flickr. Location: A04, Mynderis Tags: Land Vehicle (hovercraft) Sorry Bob to cut the deadline so close! **This build takes place before Scorpio's first spying mission, several months ago** Scorpio having recently been assigned a Spying Outfit, the Council of Five decided he had also better get a little bit of spy training in. His mission would be on A06, a hot, volcanic desert planet, So the Council wanted his training to take place in a similar environment. Luckily, the outer rim planet Mynderis had a similar climate and features, and was closer to Torresta. His task was to master stealth maneuvers driving a hypercraft (high-speed hovercraft). This craft was capable of very swift speeds using anti-grav thrusters, however it was utterly incapable of clearing more than a few inches from the surface. A lightweight, super-durable alloy was developed that shielded the bottom from the inevitable scrapes it would face. Luckily, the hull was also extraordinarily heat-proof, as if the burning lava flows along the planet's surface didn't torch the craft, the blazing dunes would. This hypercraft model was called "the Scarab", as it was perfect for desert travel. Scorpio thought it was also because it looked somewhat insect-like, but such was life at M.A.N.T.I.S. Location: F10 Arium Major Tags: Science, Octan, Civil, Land Vehicle // PERSONAL DIARY // After last week's discovery we had our drones looking for other anomalies. As it turns out there was one found in the shallow waters of Arium Major. ED-208 and I grabbed an Octan brand High Speed Dual Occupant Water Craft (OCHSDOWC for short). He wasn't happy about being on the water even though I had coated him in Octan brand High Performance Robot Sealant. When we arrived at the location of the device I asked if he would rather stay in the boat with his Octan brand Personal Floatation Device for Robots, and he said it would be for the best. Given that ED-208 wouldn't be with me I brought along my Octan brand High-Definition Underwater Camera to take pictures with. The new scuba gear and fins I had brought along also helped immensely. This device seemed to be capable of both acoustic listening and water composition analysis. I'm not sure what they were looking for in the water. I'm not even sure who "they" is! Once again all I could do was upload my data to Octan HQ and await further instructions. Having found a second device I'm sure they will be more interested in who is placing these devices and why. Location: E02 - Jurin II Tags: Spaceship, Land Vehicle, Civil After crash landing on Jurin II, Pilot John Hannibal left his medic/mechanic/explorer droid Dora to scout the area while he was away. As she gives him a tour of all of her favorite discoveries, John and Dora come across two new colonists, the Jins, retrieving their freshly delivered frontier pod. Ma' Jin very happy to see John, who has been the majority investor in their colonization bid with Octan, and John is excited to get such a good look at his eager, and not-so-shy colonist. Hannibal - "Stay put for a minute George, I've got to come down there anyway, my droid is tracking something she saw a couple of weeks ago, it must be down a little lower." Ma' - "Oh, that's very likely John. These trees grow so fast whatever you're looking for is likely to have been consumed by now. And call me Ma' you turkey, you're every bit of our family, like it or not" Hannibal - "Yes Ma'. Very possible, about the growth that is..." Ma' - "What was it you were looking for?" Hannibal - "More M.A.N.T.I.S. personnel I'm afraid. Been finding remnants of their patrols all over the lower levels. Dora says this one is particularly interesting." Ma' - "Oh, yes... our little scarecrow. He was like that when we scouted this place out last week. The locals said they were having some fun..." Hannibal - "Locals?" Ma' - "Oh, yes, our little octopus friends... George was able to figure out how to communicate with them through colors! He can really only understand their general emotions about a subject, but they were quite tickled by their little stunt with the fella down below." Hannibal - "Hm, well if it's all the same to y'all, I'd like to move y'all's pod a bit further away to be safe; wouldn't want any kiddos catching something from that corpse. Also, don't report in about your new friends just yet. The company's latest "retrievals" of xenological specimens have not been very peaceful... But now that we are here, could you let us in on it? Well, as the major corporations here in Andromeda start conflict with each other over planets to dominate, our marketing department wanted to develop a vehicle that would take a form so terrifying that fear itself would be our ally. The idea is that the use of such a vehicle would discourage the other corporations from interfering with our assignments. Eshey and I had our brains scanned so they could find images of the thing that terrified us the most during our exploration assignments. I see. I'm still not sure how I feel about this. You always worry too much, Eshey. Now, let's bring her about and return to the ship. And let's bring the alien back. I'm sure Dr. Long would want to take a look. Aye, sir. No, no, no, Hombre. Location: C06 - Hyreal Tags: Vehicle, Land Vehicle, Exploration Ender was off across one of the islands of Hyreal. This one was known for it's black sand beaches. Something not found in many parts of the galaxy. But what this island was even better known for were it's orange trees. Ender wished he had more time to stop and admire, but his main task was to explore and see if there was anything more valuable than the water they already knew they could harvest from the planet.

Location: F08 Raduon Tags: Science, Octan, Civil, Land Vehicle // PERSONAL DIARY // My droid from last week found ... something. It had sent back images from an area we had dubbed "the white zone" that our analysts looked over but they weren't sure what they were even seeing. So Dr. Long decided to send me out to have a look at it. It was clearly technology, but from whom and for what purpose? I found ED-208 and told him we had a mission from Dr. Long. I showed him the pictures and he said it looked like a trap of some sort and that we should just blow it up from orbit. I told him that we needed to better understand what it was and who put it there so the two of us were going to check it out. He said: "Just the two of us? To check out some random technological thing in the middle of nowhere? Surely you can't be serious." I told him that I was entirely serious and that I was a bit insulted he would call me Shirley. Before we left Dr. Long sent us a nice message saying: "I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you." Encouragement like that is what makes her clearly one of the best. Filling her people with the confidence to do a good job, knowing she has our best interest at heart. We drove out to the mystery thing and discovered something very odd. It was some sort of small electronics shack made up of parts from Octan, Kawashita, and Mantis. I could recognize bits from all 3 corporations and it seemed to be set up to pull in any signals any of the corporations sent and since it had our equipment it was able to gather even encrypted signals. Since it had parts from all 3 corporations it either was created by someone else or a corporation trying to cover their tracks. ED-208 seemed very nervous and insisted that there were "bad signs". ED-208 scanned the equipment information and we called in to corporate for instructions. They told us to return to the Axle for now and that they would handle things. I'm not sure exactly what that meant but ED-208 commented that those "smug flowers would get what they had coming." I guess the building did look a bit like a flower. Extra pics:

Location: Sorn, B06 Tags: MANTIS, land vehicle, spying, military, building AG: Sorn Sabatoge by David FNJ, on Flickr Double D's log 12: Kawashita developed a large shield over several of their buildings that is blocking some of our larger vehicles and spacecraft from forcing them to surrender. I am being sent with a few MANTIS operatives to go inside the shield's boarders and take out the shield generators so that reinforcements can finish the job. Our mission, get in, get out, and watch it blow! It's all or nothing! ~ DD out The epic looking doors and spiral columns Roof of the building Yup! Full interior! Gotta have those sci-fi crates! The doors slide open and the locking mechanism works! You can't open the doors without first detaching them. Each lock sets into place on a black stump with the yellow stripe. Because the rod sticks out only a little bit, it makes locking, unlocking, and setting the locks into the black stumps easy and efficient without sacrificing functionality. Next are the photos that show some action shots and rockwork. Finally, the MANTIS Jeep ------------------------------------------------- This was a BLAST to build! I'm very pleased with how this creation turned out from the colors, the building details, the interior, the rockwork, and the MANTIS Jeep. This is definitely my favorite MANTIS creation so far.

He had been warned that he might run across some hostile Mantis'. What Mantis weren't hostile? But with the speed capabilities of the bike, Ender wasn't worried even if he across some hostiles.

Location: F08 Raduon Tags: Science, Octan, Civil, Land Vehicle // PERSONAL DIARY // After my recent issues with vehicles I decided to let ED-208 select and pilot our vehicle for our latest mission. Dr. Long assigned me to create a drone to explore Raduon and send back data. It was great that I got to have a brief meeting with her about the mission, though she did seem like her mind was elsewhere. Probably still worried about the reports of activity in unexplored space towards the core. During the meeting I updated her on the status of my work with flowers and awesomnium. I wanted to make sure that the work I had done wouldn't be lost while I was gone. She assured me that it would be handled. I guess she must have asked ED-208 to look into it because he mentioned to me that "There won't be any problems with THOSE flowers", so that was good to hear. It was nice having my companion watching my back as always. My original design for the drone was unarmed, in fact I'd never integrated weapons into any drone before. However, Dr. Long was quite insistent that after the numerous robots and drones we had lost lately the drone should be capable of self-defense. Not that I could argue with such a wonderfully smart and strong woman anyway! Being a bit unfamiliar with weapons in general I asked ED-208 to help me with the gun. I wasn't sure we needed one capable of piercing a foot of armor, but ED-208 pointed out that we have no idea what kinds of flora or fauna the drone might come across. It was weird though he was oddly specific about "sneaky white flowers", but he had a point that we don't know what alien species or even other corporations the drone might face. The gun on our vehicle was even more of a surprise. ED-208 said it was merely a precaution, but I'm not sure we needed a gun capable of destroying a heavy assault mech on a purely scientific mission. I guess that is why I'm no weapons expert! The vehicle itself was pretty barebones, but really we just needed it to get the drone out into the field. I had invited Dr. Long to accompany us on this mission to see how the drone performed in the field, but she said she was too busy. I figured that would be the case but wanted her to know that I would be happy to have her along any time. I'm sure the drone will do good work and hopefully with the attached armament it won't be abducted by any of the other corporations. I can't believe they would steal our robots, but then again it seems like most of the other corporations make their employees do lots of the manual labor we've delegated to robots so I can see why they would want to. ED-208 said there was no worry about him being captured. Even if they managed to disarm him, he has a self-destruct that would wipe out a small city. I asked him about what the parameters were around when it would go off though since I'm always with him, but he said while he couldn't discuss the specifics for security reasons that I shouldn't worry. I'm sure Octan did a great job with his programming so I should have nothing to worry about, besides he is here for my safety! Extra pics:
