Do you have a battery tester to check that those alkalines are actually good? 10 minutes seem kind of short for good new batteries. The easy thing is to use rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries. I get one to two hours out of them running at train shows. If you have access a 3D printer, you can make an adapter to use 9V style Li-Ion batteries with the PU hub.

I think 10+ wide would allow for more details and room in the passenger car to recreate scenes from Murder on the Orient Express.

I used double sided foam tape to attach devices to my dash. They stick really good, maybe a bit too good. They left residue on the dash when I removed it.

You can use Velcro tape if you have concerns about theft. That way you can detach the LEGO and hide in your glove box or trunk depending on the size of your creation. ABS normally doesn't melt in a hot car but PLA will. The custom GPS stand on the left is 3D printed with ABS, the one on the right is printed with PLA. I would be more concerned about UV light yellowing the parts. I have a sunglass holder made with black LEGO pieces in the car. My car came with a rubbery tray on top of the dash. It sits there in the sun and no noticeable colour change on the black pieces.

If you need to pick a perfect undamaged set box, then the store is a better bet than online drop kick shipping. Stores can be more fun if you have kids or part of an RLUG.

Not really. I have sets in same sized box and similiar numbers of bags. Some have crushed stickers and most do not. I have one set where the big giraffe was stuck in the box and I thought it was missing after I shook everything out of the box. It was a tight fit. It seems like box size is a function of the number of pieces. BS=f(n)

The Chinese ones I ordered from Ebay all measured 7.93mm.

The GBC standard is input on the left and output on the right. It is only important if you want your module to function with other people's modules at shows and events. If you're doing your own thing, then it is whatever you chose. It looks ok assuming your "In Box 2" is really the Out Box.

If you want to be LEGO pure, then I think Powered UP is the most flexible and adaptable. PU colour sensors work too good for keeping trains apart. You can use LEGO servo motors to turn the knob on the 9V train controller or Power Function speed controler. Most of Powered UP motors have position sensing. One simple method is to always start the trains off at their designated known locations. Then the keep track of the sensor inputs. The fun way to automate is invite a bunch of friends over to run the trains and designate one the dispatcher.

Very nice. The good thing with LEGO is you can always learn to make your own with their pieces if momma LEGO doesn't provide.

Different colors would make it easier to figure which end of the line you have reached and which direction to go back. You have to start the train between the two colors though.
