  1. With a pleasant beep, the door unlocks and slides open. Immediately, a foul smell begins to flow into the hallway as Kirwin takes a look a what waits for them in the security office. Leaning against the desk is an older woman, face frozen in fury. It appears that some of the Hydra monster has grown through her, forming an unblinking eye over her torso. Blood is spilled all around her. Beside her is a rack of various types of weapons, and a cabinet covered in more tendrils. Meanwhile, in the corridor, Dean and Duncan glance at each. Uncomfortable with Merei's attention, they slowly back towards the other end of the corridor. Well, if you come across anything, please report it to your local authorities! We'll keep an eye out for your group... I'm not fully convinced you don't have your hands in this somehow. Hart cleaning its own? Rest assured we'll get to the bottom of this. See you on the other side. They move towards Engineering.
  2. MM Note: To be clear, the Hydra wall cuts in between the doors to Security and Crew Quarters. Dean and Duncan can't currently get at the Head and you can't currently get at Crew Quarters.
  3. Kirwin Persuasion Check (DC 1/3) - 6, 1, 5 (Two successes) Er... uh... of course, but... Hart doesn't have authority beyond their station... do they? ITA 3.1.7.2 Bravo-2 does allow us an official investigation in case of an environment deemed unsafe for outside organizations... but sure. If y'all think you're so competent. Duncan looks at the mesh of tendrils in between them. Eh... how 'bout you start on that side and we'll start on this side?
  4. I think we'll be the judge of how safe it is here. And we're the professionals! With all due respect ma'am, it's probably best to let us handle things from here on! We followed through on our investigation! We picked up a clean trail of breadcrumbs that lead us straight here. Now we'll do a thorough look over this shuttle, and we can judge who's to blame and all that. Duncan points to the dead body between them and the heroes. Like him. Did you kill him? We might need to fingerprint you. I grew up on a farm! I don't think that was an invitation, Dean. He turns back to Kirwin. Listen, bud, we know what we're doing. Let the big shots do the work on this one.
  5. My... office will do just fine, dear. Merei starts down the starboard corridor, where a grizzly sight awaits her. The corridor is covered in the Hydra substance, with a mass of tendrils obscuring passage through the corridor for the moment. On the other side of the tendrils is a mustached Hart crewmember who appears to have been sliced by the creature. On either side of the corridor is an accessible doorway. Around the corner of the corridor, towards the starboard airlock, noise can be heard. A pair of human voices echo off the walls, seeming to be in the middle of a conversation or argument of some kind. Footsteps follow the voices, and soon two uniformed men step around the corner... Well, well, well, what have we here? Excuse us, but this ship is now under the jurisdiction of the International Trade Authority! Please comply as we begin our investigation, and thank you for your time!

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - Training Center

Soren returned to the training center after a long flight, trying to stretch his tired limbs. He considered keeping up with his flying skills at a piloting module, but he figured the time for that would come soon. For now, he needed to build up his magic. If he wanted it to have any relevance fight, he'd need it to be able to have some actual force. He flexed at the muscles in his palm, freezing the air around him into an icicle that he swung around like a weapon. Soren practiced freezing the target dummy, accidentally breaking an arm off. Holding the arm back to the dummy, Soren let out more cold magic, freezing the arm back in place and temporarily repairing the target. All the while, he got faster, reacting quicker to new stimulous. He didn't have armour, but maybe if he was skillful enough, he wouldn't need any. Start: +7 CP Nature: 1 -- 2 (2 CP) Spirit: 2 -- 3 (2 CP)Skill: 3 -- 4 (2 CP)(1 CP remaining)
  8. Shuttle? No- There are no shuttles on this freighter. He would have through the airlocks to Container Delta. What, Actaeon? It's an interpersonal shuttle, nothing fancy. We could probably squeeze eight in total if we needed to, but I wouldn't want to tax the reserves anything beyond that. Kirwin Coding Check (DC 3/5) - 1, 2, 6, 6, 6 (Three successes) Kirwin is able to break through three of the five restricted codes. Two of the contents are familiar, the rare gems and flowers that Greenlaw had been studying in her office. The third crate Kirwin uncovers appears to be a cryo-chamber preserving some ancient human relics. Unfortunately, the more he digs through the restrictive files, the more the computer responds, locking even tighter around the remaining restricted files.
  9. I... never heard from him after that. That was so long ago by this point, before I... lost myself. I don't know what happened to him. Or what the state of our ship is... my ship... Varen Coding Check (DC 1) - 5, 3, 5 (Two successes) Staring at the screen, and given what he already knows of the crew, Varen is able to suss out that the underlined roster likely marks out the leadership staff of Valencia. As the group is mulling over their most recent information, Valencia violently shakes for the briefest of moments. The heroes glance amongst themselves for a moment before a voice rings within all of their heads. Hey kids, how are things going in there? Thought I lost you for a moment back there, your voices got real cloudy. Sorry to show up unannounced, but Jace thought you might want to hear - some sort of ship just came out of nowhere and force-docked with the starboard airlock. I couldn't get a clear read on them, just be careful.
  10. MM Note: Well this post came out meatier than I thought it would. "Playing <08/22|1231> [Interior Recording: Captain Edward Ilbery, Head Pilot Simon Dunn]" Simon, to what do I owe the- With all due respect, Cap, I'd like to cut through the BS. I thought we'd talked about this back at Charon, now we're looking at riding between Scylla and Charybdis again? The information we've pulled from Carpathia has, unfortunately, forced our hand. I'm not willing to dock at a civilian port with these kinds of risks, we'll go to the Queen of Harts and get Mortizar's engineers to do a full inspection. Besides, you said yourself you could handle the Forbidden Sector. I could handle it in one-man ship, not in a tug boat like this. Look, Cap, I've been around guys like Viper Carpathia before, I ain't about to claim any of his intel as reliable. I understand that, Simon, but I'm responsible for this ship and for the assets onboard it. I'm afraid I have to take all the precautions available to me. An' what about this crew? I have kids and a partner I'm responsible for. I ain't the only guy on board with a family; where's our security rank compared to the boxes we have in the cargo hold? Simon, I appreciate your concerns. But my decision is final. We're trusting you at this point, after all. If everything goes smoothly, we might still be able to meet our deadlines with both crew and cargo properly intact. That's all anyone can hope for at this point. Thank you for your time. I'm not sure we should be counting on things working for us at this point, Cap... Respectfully speaking. "Playing <09/04|1027> [Interior Recording: Captain Edward Ilbery, Cheif Engineer Ernest McSorley]" Well, you've properly screwed us this time, Ed. Thank you for your candor, Ernest. Would you like to be more specific, or are you satisfied with hollering in the mess hall? Ah, c'mon, you know I'm hardly liable for what comes out of my mouth after a few drinks. It's been a stressful trip, Ed, I- You publically undermined me. I thought we were better than that? ...we're gonna go straight into it, eh? Okay, Ed. I get this has been a lot for you, but, you've gotta admit that this op has gone FUBAR. A man is dead now, and what have we done about it? Sit in a nebula from hell with a dead engine and some alien creeping through our vents? We've got to do something. The inaction is killing us now, it's already killed our boy Bugsy. Now we go way back, Ed, and I respect you a lot, but you really have properly screwed us here and it's time to realize that and act on it. Now, I've been talking with Gail, and I understand that in Delta there's some power equipment being shipped. I think I could wire up a device to send out a comm signal through the cloud, maybe actually get some help. With luck, we salvage the cargo, if nothing else, we save the crew. Okay. That's valid. But I'm willing to risk another ship going down like we have. You're right, I've already brought Valencia down, no sense dragging anyone down with us. I have thought about this. Instead of sending out a signal, you're going to rip those batteries to overload. We're going down with the ship. Down with the ship? Ed, the crew is never going to stand for that. Simon is already- I've heard Simon out on a number of occasions. This is going to be a hard sell, I know. But those are my orders, Ernest. Tell me when it's done. Thank you. "Playing <09/07|1421> [Interior Recording: Captain Edward Ilbery, Dr Jamie C. Luce]" Ilbery rubs at his temples, looking decidedly more weary at this point. Dr. Luce, I don't suppose you're here for a casual chat. I can't believe you, Ilbery. I'm astonished. You would abandon Fitzgerald and Lightfoot to that thing? It's... time we started taking ownership for our actions. That calls for sacrifices. I'm sorry; I... I thought they would have left the mess hall before we dismantled it. "Dismantled"- you blew a damn hole in it, Ilbery! Last I talked with her, Greenlaw was under the impression this... Hydra might be trying to feed. I figured we might be able to cut off its source. This thing is intelligent - what exactly do you think it's trying to feed on? It hardly matters now. McSorley set out... this morning? Yesterday? He's going to destroy the ship. We'll all go down in this grave we've buried together... Gods, Ilbery. Well, you might be satisfied with this fate you've constructed, but I'm not leaving Fitzgerald and Lightfoot like that. I'm getting them out. I'm not leaving them to... whatever this Hydra is going to do to them. She storms out of the office and the recording ends with Ilbery slowly sinking his head into his hands. <Playback ended> <Valencia|Cargo Manifest> Kirwin looks through the collective files, sorting through readouts of fine jewels, crates of cash, and other relics, ordered by all sorts of clientele. 11. Kirwin Coding Check (DC 1/3) - 5, 4, 4, 3, 4 (Four successes) The regular message appears over the screen: NOTICE: The system has undergone an unscheduled shut-down. Ship-wide communications now operating on backup power! As standard procedure, the last 3 recorded messages have been stored in backup files. Here are your messages: <08/22|1231> [Interior Recording: Captain Edward Ilbery, Head Pilot Simon Dunn] <09/04|1027> [Interior Recording: Captain Edward Ilbery, Cheif Engineer Ernest McSorley] <09/71|1421> [Interior Recording: Captain Edward Ilbery, Dr Jamie C. With some tinkering, however, and the knowledge from the captain, Kirwin is able to access deeper latent files from the computer's backup. <Valencia|CargoManifest> <Valencia|PersonellFiles> <Valencia|CoreReadouts>
  12. Kirwin Perception Check (DC 1) - 1, 1, 3 (0 Successes) As they step into the space, Kirwin glances around at the dark office, but cannot hear anything unusual in the room.
  13. Kirwin steps into the cabin, and finds a surprisingly spacious office for an industrial freighter. He eyes some loose cabinetry and files, as well as a plush recliner to the side. In the center of the room is Ilbery's desk, and its still-active computer display.

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - Mission Masters Lounge

Echoing WBD's sentiments, this was a solid quest, Endgame! I never wound up popping into any of your 1.0 Quests (I think the old combat system intimidated me a little too muchI ) but it was good to finally sit on one! A decently-paced mystery with a pretty strong climax. I had a lot of fun! To be honest, I quite enjoyed the more laid-back pace of Quest #6! It definitely meant things were a little slower and made didn't have quite the same impact, but given I was hosting my own quest and had a lot going on in my own life, it was nice to not feel a ton of pressure to be super-active for this one. To be honest, I didn't notice. Every Quest/MM is going to have their own balance between freedom of choice and streamlined story. This one definitely more in the latter category, but I certainly don't think that was a problem - especially with aforementioned other priorities going on. And it helps to have a genuinely meaningful choice at the end! You clearly spent the whole quest building up to what to do with Invictus, and so the ending felt like a suitable climax to what was otherwise a pretty straightforward mystery. Speaking of... I like him! I figured pretty quickly that we were building up to a reveal that Invictus was still around, but it gave me the chance to explore the world a little bit and see just what people thought of this guy. In short, about what you'd expect from an intergalactic boogeyman! I'm still very curious as to what Invictus himself thinks of everything he did; I think that's part of what made the ending debate interesting to me is that we'd heard a lot from all of these other people about the legacy of Invictus but not a lot about what actually, factually happened. I still kind of feel like we're just barely get to know him, but I'm intrigued enough to want to know where he goes, and I'm happy he's not fully dead quite yet. What we do have is pretty cool, though. If he's genuinely sorrowful for his past, or at the very least has turned a leaf, it's interesting to have this machine just kind of trying to live while everyone who knows his name wants him dead. Glenn's grief is very valid, but it's hard to say for sure how well-placed it is. I wouldn't be surprised if we had a lot left to learn about Invictus. Other varying thoughts! Overall, the quest was pretty strong. I was worried I wouldn't be able to flex Soren's piloting skills, and I'm glad I was proven wrong this early on . Glenn was good at being an active voice without feeling like just an MM stand-in; the fact that we were able to go set up the antennas by ourselves helped that. He felt a little doormat-ish for the first part of the quest but really shone through with his argument with Invictus. The mercenaries were a fun group, and served as a good contrast to what we'd heard about the empire. All the battles were pretty punchy without feeling overwhelming; when I saw Invictus' health pool I readied myself for a grind, but the antenna weaknesses helped speed things up and in the end I think the fight was sufficiently challenging while still feeling very do-able. I feel like we're all still figuring out how exactly combat works works in this system, but I think the high-risk, high-reward of fights keeps things pretty brief and exciting. Valesia is a solid character. She inherits some of Skrall's world-weariness but in a very different way. Her resistance to artificial life came as an initial shock but makes a lot of sense, and opens up for some really cool avenues for her character. Her conflict with Soren felt pretty natural but without being overwhelming; I'm glad this never quite got to the intensity of #1's conflicts. Just a sensible disagreement, and one I think they were able to mostly resolve; at least, it didn't seem like Valesia carried a lot of bad blood. Should there be more Invictus quests, I look forward to seeing how she reacts to him in the future! Max is a lot of fun, I'm pretty partial towards the soft-spoken but opinionated archetype. I'm not sure we got a lot of specifics about Max, but he's still pretty new and that's fine! His general vibe is very good; sort of easy to get along with but pretty firm in his views. I hope you and Max stick around, because he's a strong start to a character and you're off to a strong start as a player! All-in-all, a nice quest with low-stakes involvement and high-stakes impact in the world. A really cool combination! I'm excited to see what you have up your sleeve with this plot Endgame!
  15. I'm not sure... memory recall is not exactly a pristine factor of my condition. Ilbery is clearly still woozy despite his healings. That said, you can access crew files from my office... it appears you already have the key. There were... twenty-two of us in all. The files can give you names and positions... As for the Starblazers... like I said, one of them hopped on board before we left. Tampered with my damn ship, made all sort of claims. We locked him up in Container Beta. Food, water... but no visitation. I guess we were going to drop him off in a cell on the Queen of Hearts. Timeline? It all still feels hazy... I remember we set off from Port Charon on 08/17. We caught that Carpathia scumbag, got him to talk, and he spouted a bunch of BS about Starblazer operatives and sabotaging Valencia. It was hard to tell what was fake or not. We make the final call to shortcut through the sector. Then with all the gravity surges... I don't know that Hydra thing hooked a ride to us, but I guess it got agitated. Bugsy was victim one, things got worse from there. Our engines shorted out, and we had to implement lockdown measures to ration our supplies. McSorley made a damn ruckus, kept saying we needed to get a message out through the cloud... There's a bunch of power equipment stored in Container Delta, enough to light up a damn city if you ask me. Someone was shipping some heavy-duty batteries, I guess. McSorley wanted to hitch a comm device to the power supplies, he believed it could boost our output enough to get a clean signal out of the nebula. Radio for help. But... I said no. I told him to rig the equipment to overload instead. We've made enough mistakes here, it was time to blow this whole ship, take out this Hydra thing with it. ...I don't know what happened to McSorley. He went missing a couple of days before I lost myself, but I think he was headed back there. Shortly after... everything went black. I think that's all I know. My personal console might give you more context... but that's up to you. As for me... I think I'm going to sit here for a while. Try and catch myself some rest before whatever comes next. Zaria Medicine/Nature Check (DC1/3) - 6, 1, 2 (One success) As Zaria examines the wound, she sees some of the Hydra's substance lingering on the gash, but as far as she can tell, it appears to be innert.
  16. I wish I knew this thing's origin. Near as I can tell, it just... it just appeared on the ship. Greenlaw dubbed it... GL... something or other, I don't remember. The crewmates all called it the Hydra; no matter what we did, nothing could put it down for good. It spread through the whole damn freighter... I don't know where Simon or the rest of the crew is. Hopefully they found somewhere to hide. Last I remembered... I think he set off after McSorley. Everything was coming undone by that point, it's so hard to put it back together. My head was already swimming by that point... What prompted us to fly here... we got real spooked back on Port Charon. Damn Starblazers were making all sorts of threats, I think they'd sabotaged Valencia. We didn't know for sure, but we were on the clock. Then one of them snuck aboard my ship. He said, he said... something about how the Starblazers weren't going to let us get away with "this," whatever "this" was. So we thought we could shortcut through the Forbidden Sector and beeline straight to Cosmopoli. Next thing you know, our engines are cutting out and this alien specimen is crawling all over Valencia. Goes to show what a rushed job gets you...
  17. Soren gave a curt nod at Valesia's words, still mulling over Perry's last words. You too, old-timer, he says at last, meeting the Cladrasith's eyes for just a moment behind his sunglasses. 'The Arm will need heroes'? Best of luck to whoever they were. He was no hero - just a hired gun. A damn good hired gun. And it was time he made use of his earnings. He cast a long look out at Savior City as they took off. Had he made a mistake, trying to defend Invictus? Did he mean what he'd said back there? Did any of it really matter, or did the worlds just keep spinning? Whatever happened, happened. And he was still alive. As he laid down in the shuttle, attempting to get some shut-eye on the flight, he kept trying to convince himself that was all that mattered.
  18. Varen Persuasion Check (DC 1/3) - 6, 5, 6, 1, 5 (Four successes) I... I think all of that infection is gone. But you can still feel it everywhere... like a cold shiver down your spine. That said... yes. I feel... clearer. I was not myself earlier, I- I apologize. Slipped my mind...? I... am willing to tell you whatever you may need. It's time everyone was honest with themselves about this venture. Ask away. I admit to feeling quite... weak, however, so I will answer what I can. I'm sure any gaps can be filled by the filed in my office.
  19. MM Note: Fixed and fixed. I... thank you. I could very much use a drink. I'm... I'm so sorry for all of that.
  20. Soren considers offering to try and clear the blockage, but it seemed that the AI knew what was going on. As far as he could gather, the piece of code was safe now, and nothing he was going to do would make it safer. E'ryone should get the chance to rest now and then. Sleep well, Percy. May you dream of electric sheep.
  21. I'm no expert, but is there any way we can fix you up? 'Make sure you're runnin' good as new?
  22. Round 5: Merei moves to D1 Merei rallies Zaria Zaria vs. Creature C - (3, 2, 6, 5, 6 +1) 4 Successes vs. (4) 1 Success = 3 damage. Varen moves to G3 Kirwin defends Varen With a boost from Merei, Zaria pounces on the reforming creature. Her khopesh goes into a flurry, bisecting the specimen and atomizing the tendrils to stop all hope of resurrection. The group pauses for a moment again, weapons bared for another mass of tendrils to attack them, but nothing happens. Finally, their shoulders ease, and they look around the bridge. The final creature continues to writhe, despite being headless. An awful shrieking noise emerges from the creature, and the tendrils from its dead companions inch towards it, before fusing together into a new makeshift head on its liquid body. 24. Right. We should ensure the systems are all functioning, 'n spite of Invictus' intereference. The pilot shrugs. I'm not gonna make you exert yourself if you don't feel the need to. I can probably manage all right by myself.

Merei prepares herself for the next round, while beside her Zaria spins to cleave her blade through the malleable torso of the attacking creature. Its form splays across the stairway, and a foul odor rises from tar-like blood. Kirwin, meanwhile, clicks a grenade to life and hucks it at the two remaining creatures, diving out of the way of the blast. One of the specimens is wholly consumed by the explosion, spraying matter across the bridge. The third survives the attack and swings again at Kirwin, knicking them but not doing serious damage. As the heroes recover for the next round, they notice the scattered corpses of the two dead creatures twitch slightly, but nothing appears to come of it. The Enemy: ?
