My 3 year old hates the Bluecoats (in a cute way)
Perfectionist replied to JeffCopp's topic in Pirate MOCs
Why didn't you allow her to favour pirates? I've always been on their side as a kid. -
Now that look like it will be possible to make white hulls in the future. While that's certainly interesting, I'm still fine with black.
-
That's indeed a very clever use of the prefab rocks! I've never seen them upside down before. The whole concept is pretty sound though. Maybe a bit chaotic, but very lively!

That's really well build and the proportions match exactly to the original minifigure! I'm surprised sbout so few comments since I believe it's not really possible to build a much better maxifigure. Great work!

[MOC] USS Poseidon - Minifig Scale First Rate Ship of the Line
Perfectionist replied to shiplover's topic in Pirate MOCs
While this isn't the most detailed ship project in minifigure scale and your gun count isn't anywhere realistic, you are actually making some real progress and you've got good chances to be one of the very very few to actually complete such a massive ship model. I've got one question though since she'll become really heavy in the building process: can you still move her? Is the structure stable enough? -
Thanks, Admiral! I will most certainly do my very best to find a more "perfect" solution. ;-) By the way, this might also solve my problem how to attach the bottom of the sails. :-)

Thanks! I used one of the new style hinges - it's hidden in the table. Many thanks! I'd really love to come to an Eurobricks event at some point, but I'm afraid this year it won't work out. When there's another possibility to put some ships on display however I might do that. Thanks! Well, the older two frigates now have both: a removable deck and sides. Personally I consider removable sides superior in all aspects; they are easier to implement, quicker to remove and allow for better playability. It's also possible to leave one side open and one side closed when on display. The only reason I made the removable deck back then is because I couldn't make the sides modular with the old style hinges. The Superbe has been broken up. Also I've sold a lot of Lego already, so I don't really have bricks for anything big anymore. I'm still looking for ways to get rid of many of the specialised parts I've bought for her though. I must admit that building ships at minifigure scale with such high ambitions is very risky, expensive and time-consuming. I figured that since I won't have the necessary ressources in the near future, it would be best to terminate the project. Exactly. Well, like I said these pictures are from July last year. All staysails are already in place, I just didn't take pictures yet. Currently I'm working on studdingsails; I started with Achille:

Well, after I've been largely inactive for half a year or so, I've started finishing my fleet last week and before I post pictures of the current progress, I found it more appropriate to post those from July 2011 that I haven't posted yet. Let's start with "Concorde". She's a 32 gun frigate on 6 midsections, which is the same as Achille. Unlike Achille however I've been using the lower parts of the new prefabs and my beloved NextGen technique that in my opinion allows for much more accurate shapes. Another difference is the modularity; I chose to make only the sides modular so that the rigging doesn't need to be compromised. In my personal opinion she's the most beautiful ship I'v build so far, but judge for yourself!

I announced this thread 2 days ago. Since I did make some significant changes to the design and basically didn't want to mess with the Captain's way of building such a ship in his own thread (an excellent manual ) I post it in here. Major Updates have happened. Check them out: 1st UPDATE (STERN) 2nd UPDATE (COMPLETE REDESIGN) 3rd UPDATE (TOPDECK+CAPTAIN'S CABIN) 4th UPDATE (HULL ALMOST COMPLETED!) 5th UPDATE (BOTH SHIPS ALMOST COMPLETED!) 6th UPDATE (REBUILD OF ACHILLE AND SOME STUNNING RIGGING) Below is the first post of the development process: I finally got the headrails look the way I want them to Note the improvements to the old version (which Admiral Croissant commented on): I quite like the look of metallic grey guns looking out of their gunports The ultra-smooth gunports using 1X1 headlight bricks : The stern decorations are still a bit preliminary; the headrails even more. Mostly I intended to find out which techniques I would use for this creation, the final design will base on them. I'll keep this thread updated as the build progresses. Feedback is welcome!

I think this is very much how the official set should have been in the first place!
-
Well,I feel honoured you start copying a ship that hasn't been finished or even shown in detail yet, but there are a few remarks I'd like to make: While I like to refer to ships build entirely on prefabs as NextGen, I also meant to include a brickbuild stern in that term, I used SNOTed slopes as you can see here: I uploaded some more pics of Medée too. I also agree that the grey line seems a bit out of place and that a single steering wheel would do better than a double. Also consider that Medée is build on 4 midsections, 3 might be a bit short although I'm certain it works for a smaller brig. You mentioned a limited amounts of parts.. well I don't know what you've got but to be honest I'd chnage the red sides for tan, dark red or even yellow. I know I used the same colourscheme on Achille back a while, but I'm not entirely fond of it anymore. The headrails and stern design look really creative and well done! Historically small ships with an open gundeck like a brig of war or a Bermuda sloop never had any tumblehome, check Architectura Navalis Mercatoria by Henrik Af Chapman if you don't believe me.
-
I have started adding square sails to my ships, next will be staysails and possibly studding sails. I'll start with Medée since I believe Legonardo could use some more pics of her.
-
Congratulations! Also thanks for the many pictures. The glow-in-the-dark-ghostship is pretty impressive! I think it would deserve it's own thread.

The Eurobricks Collaborative Pirate build at Brickworld Chicago
Perfectionist replied to Big Cam's topic in LEGO Pirates
Congratulations! That's a terrific display; and it's really huge. How come all of those ship MOCs haven't been posted in the Pirate Moc Forum? Like for instance that ghost ship? -
Nope, it's the Bermuda Sloop. As you can see I started making sail patterns with cardboard and now I'm also into sailmaking itself: The tea that I use for colouring the sailcloth is from a German discounter, 50 bags for 0,69€. I'm also using the same glue for the ratlines in case anyone wanted to know. All strings are cotton. Yes. You've got a point there, but I like to keep the rigging rather simple for a cleaner look. Well I haven't added backstays yet, when I do they'll reack back 3 more studs. You are correct, but she's 1:42 now and 74 guns; 172 studs long and 44 studs wide; and yes unfortunately I encountered some frustration building the bow, so she's frozen.

Hi Horry, ja ich bin in Köln geboren und lebe immer noch da. Du bist Theaterregisseur? Krass, das ist mal interessant!

The brickbuild hull looks really nice! My thought would be that the gunports are a bit high; I'd make them more in the middle of the yellow line. Maybe use tiles instead of 2x2 plates? Or 2x2 Flags? The white masts seem a little unconventional, but they really look good! I'd space the black "iron rings" qith 3 white in between. Is the fighting top SNOT? It has a perfect size.
-
I really like your customs and it's amazing to see how many of them you have amassed! But how come they have less detail than those?
-
I just saw how you made the vertical stabilizer in your photostream and I must say it's a superb very and creative way to use headlight bricks and cheese slopes!
-
That's cool, thanks!
-
Looks very clean! I really like the inverted use of those good old windshields! The armament is truly intimidating! I feel sorry to hear about your food poisoning Is there a way to see the motorised functions? I'd really love to. The link just leads to your photostream nd I can't spot a video there. Thanks!

Motorized M1A2 ABRAMS TANK's Realistic Turret
Perfectionist replied to DLuders's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Lego will never allow for a military theme, not even if it's special and AFOL only. About the tank: weird, that there hasn't been a reply in 2010. It's a great design, and the suspension seems ingeniuosly accurate, but the exterior isn't very detailed. I still like Leopard 2 the most of all technic tanks. It's both very functional and more detailed than this one. -
Opening sealed antique sets - wonderful or painful ?
Perfectionist replied to drdavewatford's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I never understood what's so special or "magical" about MISB, but I'm not a great fan of sets either. If you don't plan to sell there is just one logical option: open it and either build the set or a MOC. If your're really looking forward to building it, then wait for a suitable day, but do it, don't hesitate. I think that bricks waiting in their plastic bags after many years are a bit sad and can only advise you to free them... but it's your decision!
