[TRIPLE] Technic Triple Build Contest Entry
KirTech LAB replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Track Symphony Hi All! I want to present my contest model. This is the composition of three mining machines. I’ve called it “Track Symphony” because I use four different types of tracks in it. The first model is a bucket-wheel excavator for overburden operations. It is mounted on caterpillar chassis with full-revolving turntable. The main tool is rotating wheel with multitude of buckets that load the material to the conveyer belt. As a conveyer belt i used rubber track because it allows to elevate material at big angle. Bucket wheel height has a manual control. After the main conveyer is passed the material comes to unloading conveyer. Its horizontal angle may be differ from the angle of digging boom. It is very useful feature because usually mining excavators have very low maneuverability. The unloading height can be adjusted manually. Control knobs are on the both sides of the excavator for comfortable control. As a counterweight the rechargeable battery box is used. Also it puts in action the M-motor to activate conveyer belts and the digging wheel. Unloading conveyer transmission contains new red gear without friction, so mechanism works at any angle. After unloading conveyer – it’s time for the second model! It is double carriage for long-distance material transportation. There are two functions in it: moving along standard Lego tracks and unloading. The unloading mechanism is rather unusual – the bottom and both side walls are movable. When the carriage is open the bottom and one wall forms a slope and the material is poured out. These functions can be motorized by using the third model. Probably it is the most complex model in my entry – this is diesel-locomotive shunter. It has four remote controlled functions. First of all it moves along standard rails. There isn’t standard motor bogie in my locomotive – i’ve replaced it by self-made 6x6 bogie driven by M-motor. The second function is motorized coupling for carriage hauling. When the coupling is active carriages can be unloaded using build-in M-motor. Unloading mechanism works not only on the straight rails! And the last function is a light signalization. We can turn it on using the micro-motor. A short video demonstration with models “in action”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bDxps9pkXY And here is a video demonstration of all functions with my comments: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKuAPN4jRwo More fotos you can find in WIP topic - http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=88726&st=25 I hope you like it! Thanks for watching and sorry for my English! -

It seems the car contains much more then 500 parts... -

Thanks all for comments! The excavator was reassembled two or three times to reduce parts quantity! And i've done it - it contains exactly 500 parts :) The train was really difficult task. There are four RC functions in it... -

Grader
KirTech LAB replied to KirTech LAB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Reflecting the last variant with 256 independent functions I’ve devised a compromise method of increasing quantity of functions with several functions control saving. This method has two disadvantages: model size increasing and disastrous increasing of IR-receivers quantity. So, let’s go back to the idea with shutter (it gives us 2 modes with total 13 independent functions and requires 7 IR-receivers). And now we add the second shutter controlled by another PF channel. Two shutters must be placed one under another, moving in perpendicular directions and the bottom shutter must be twice narrower but twice longer than the top shutter. Now we have 4 modes with 2 mode switches, total 24 independent functions with 6 functions at each mode. And yes – we need 13 IR-receivers :( We can increase shutter quantity: - 3 shutters – 8 modes – 40 functions – 5 functions in each mode, 26 receivers; - 4 shutters – 16 modes – 64 functions – 4 functions in each mode, 34 receivers; - 5 shutters – 32 modes – 96 functions – 3 functions in each mode, 67 receivers; - 6 shutters – 64 modes – 128 functions – 2 functions in each mode, 67 receivers. Of course it will be monstrous construction, but I think the system with 2 shutters has a right to life :) -

One more variant - these outriggers are really working! 16 pneumatic cylinders rised 11 kg model under surface! -

Probably you are right, but my rule says that 8461 tire diametr is a bit larger. Difference is not essential of course.- 195 replies

Great model! And what do you think about wheels from 8461? Those wheels are a bit larger! I understand that mounting of these wheels requires the reconstruction of all the rear suspension so it is just idea :) I used these wheels in my Arrow (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=85128&hl=arrow) and it looks good (of course the front wheels in my model have smaller diametr so the difference is much more)- 195 replies

I have one question: Are the chain links and tracks included into 500 parts, or the parts quantity counted without these small parts? -
Pneumatic switch

New valves require more power to switching, than white gear can supply - it simply slips. So with new valves this system don't working! -

Thanks! Without plates (in floating state) - about 6 kg. Full weight with superstructure is about 7 kg, but in this variant model can cross water obstacles only over the bottom :)- 26 replies

KirTech LAB replied to KirTech LAB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks! I'm sure it will working! But i think adding of additional motors and guide structures significantly increase the weight of the model :( I think you noticed that in the bath the model swam without plating - in spite of desire to reduce weight the superstructure is too heavy. Perhaps the possibility of clearence variation is reasonable to lay into new model project but no in modernisation of this model. I have many crazy ideas :) if some of them will realized in real working models - i'll show the result :)- 26 replies

Wow, great idea! It is necessary to think how to realize it without durability structure decreasing... With respect to minifigure scale actual clearence is about 1.5 m :)- 26 replies
