    What did you buy today?

I got the Creator Big Rig (4955) today. 550 pieces for $30 USD... and an enjoyable build as well.

How much Lego do you have?

Unfortunately I've gone through about three dark ages, and have lost my bricks during each dark age, so I have probably less than 10,000 right now. The most significant loss was my first dark age, as my grandmother used to buy me LEGO from yard sales all the time, so I had a large amount of not only the newer sets of the time (Late 80's, early 90's), but also lots of the older stuff like the older windows/doors, conveyer belts, etc. Unfortunately I gave the collection away to a family that I knew, because I never thought that I'd be using LEGO again, and they were just taking up space in a family member's attic. In my early 20's I've come out of, and then reentered dark age periods, usually having about 10-20 thousand pieces each time, but selling the LEGO off within a year so that I could buy more presents for Christmas. I started buying again back in April, and even if I lose interest for a time again, I won't part with the collection this time!

    Rarest Pirate minifig

Using Peeron, if I'm seeing things correctly... The brown vest guy (973p3b) seems to be in 2 sets, with 1 minifig in each set: 1 in 6277-1 - Imperial Trading Post (1992) 1 in 6286-1 - Skull's Eye Schooner (1993) The anchor tattoo guy (973p30) seems to be in 4 sets, with 1 minifig in 2 sets and 2 minifigs in 2 sets: 2 in 6289-1 - Red Beard Runner (1996) 2 in 6290-1 - Pirate Battle Ship/Red Beard Runner (2001) 1 in 6281-1 - Pirates Perilous Pitfall (1997) 1 in 6249-1 - Pirates Ambush (1997) That doesn't definitively answer which is more rare (it would depend on how sales went for each set), though it does seem to point to the brown vest guy being more rare.

    Bley or Gray?

Hopefully someone can provide a clearer picture, but this might give you an idea of the difference in color. The difference is more obvious in better light.

Would you open a MISB SYSTEM Pirate set?

I doubt I'd ever open up an older MISB set. Then again, I'm pretty impulsive... PS. Does anyone have statistics on how many of the Pirate sets originally got sold back in the day?

Black Seas Barracuda vs Skull's Eye Schooner

If it's about which ship would win in a fight, I'd guess the SES. If it's about just being a pirate ship, I'd say it's even (the black/white sails might be less visible than red/white, but the giant pirate symbol across one of the sails is probably a pretty good tip off as to who controls the ship). For color scheme and set design, I'd definitely go with the BSB. Then there's also the nostalgia factor, which for me definitely favors the BSB. So I also voted for the BSB.

    Bley or Gray?

I gotta go with grey. I like to have lots of colors to choose from, so I'm not against introducing new colors, but in this case I don't want the new color at the expense of the old one. If it is cost-prohibitive to produce and use both old grey and bley at the same time, I'd rather just have the older grey.

    4954 Creator House Review

Thanks for the review! I'm thinking about buying two of these for Christmas... that'd add up to a pretty nice, large house.

    The Next Brickshelf

I'm glad that people are stepping up and putting forward ideas and trying to motivate the community to find a solution to the problem that we'll soon be experiencing. Fortunately, I think that there have already been a lot of plans at forming new pic hosting sites. Even leaving aside Flickr and maj, I've also seen posts at Lugnet and elsewhere about brickimage, MOCpages, and various other possibilities. I think that the problem we will have in the months to come won't be in finding somewhere to host our Lego pics, but rather in deciding which site to use.

    What did you buy today?

I got the 7082 Skeleton's Prison Carriage today from TRU. Haven't built it yet, as I wanted to check the forums before I settled down for the night and started building (because once I do, I end up losing track of time, lol). I could have went either way on this set. While there are some parts that I liked, I think the thing that got me to buy it in the end was having 4 horses/skeleton horses and 5 knights/skeletons in a set that was only $20 USD. And as I was thinking about how many horses/minifigs there were in this set, I realised something. I've spent about $45-50 USD on 2007 Castle sets in July, and just those purchases provided me with: - 2 horses (one full barding, two headgear) - 5 skeleton horses - 7 knights with accessories - 7 skeletons with accessories - Various extra weapons Very quick way to build armies, while also getting a half decent quantity of parts for MOC's.

    Dark Ages my big behind?

Apparently my dark ages began at the age of 13. I wouldn't have been able to remember exactly, but about a week ago I was on Peeron, looking back over scans of old catalogues, and trying to pick out what sets I wanted to try and get for Christmas. Once I got to 1992, I became unfamiliar with most of the sets, so I guess that's when I was removed from LEGO. I say removed because it was not my choice to stop playing with LEGO; unfortunately, my Mom thought I was too old for it, and made me stop. It was funny to see the look on her face, though, when she visited me and saw that her son (in his mid-20's) was again playing with LEGO!

    Do you use your lego?

I play a little bit, though not nearly as much as I did before my dark ages. It's sad, but I just don't seem to have the imagination for that type of thing anymore. I wish I did. I spend most of my time building, take a picture, then start with a new one.

Problems with BS / Is BrickShelf no more ???

That stinks. Thankfully I have all my photos backed up (not that I had many on there), but it was nice to surf through and see what other Lego enthusiasts were doing. *n*

    List of 2008 sets (January)

Might pick up a Technic set, though I haven't really liked many of the sets from the last few years. I'll get the impulse sets if they are minifigs with some accessories. I'll probably also pick up a couple Indiana Jones sets. The rest... have to wait and see.

    Just what we need!

Eh... well there are certainly lots of police sets, and not nearly enough other sets to fill the town out. Restaurants, government buildings, parks, doctors, libraries, bike shops... something that we haven't seen for a while (if ever)! On the other hand, I have to admit that I'm an impulse buyer, and I have avoided buying the current police station because I'm not wild about it (especially the baseplate), but that LEGO would probably pry the money from me if the new set was nice.

How do you make .gif moving files?

Fwiw, I've been using a free program called Irfanview for years now, and it does conversions from one type of graphic file to another.

    The Four Horsemen, Metallica

Which is better, Star TREK or Star WARS?

Definitely Star Trek. Especially Deep Space Nine. I was a big Captain Picard mark back in the day, but I have to admit that Avery Brooks could have went toe-to-toe with Patrick Stewart and William Shatner in a contest about who was the most convincing/authoritative leader. And while the earlier series had some cool characters (Spock, Data, etc.), it was usually half brilliant and half preachy/lame/cheesy. DS9--at least in it's last 5 seasons--was some of the most consistent, solid Sci-Fi I've seen (only surpassed by the old Twilight Zone, IMO).

What was the last movie you watched?

The last movie I saw (with the exception of the movies on cable) was the new Pirates of the Caribbean, which I finally got to last week. I have to admit, I was very bored with it. I'm not sure how they can spend so much money, and have so much talent, and yet come up with what they did. Well, I have a pretty good idea where the problems started, and that's in having 5 people making significant/final contributions to the screenplay (it's typical for lots of people to work on a screenplay, and hand it off to new people if it's not working out or comes to a writer's block, but for Pete's sake, 5 cooks in the kitchen at the same time? No wonder the movie went in 5 different directions, had a number of almost-endings, etc...). I didn't think that the movie was bad per se, I just felt cheated for having spent $17 (plus $4 for a soda) for my wife and I to watch a movie that I was bored with.
