LEGO satisfied with profits after long period of struggle
Berry Syedow replied to johnsocal's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Bleh, I would be most distraught if TLC admitted to using filler. (Do you know what type of materials companies that produce plastic products would normally use as filler?) I don't suppose it would also be the instigator cracks? I own several Star Wars mini-figs whose torsos or arms have cracked. I even found a crack in the arm of a luke mini-fig (dressed in the orange jumpsuit) from the AT-AT (in old grey) only a few months after building the set. -
Vote for the domain name of the new Pirate LEGO Portal website
Berry Syedow replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
You know, I feel like a dunce for not having realized that "piratebricks" would compliment the "eurobricks" name scheme perfectly. Nevertheless I must side with "classic-pirates" as the domain name, because it's always been a dream of mine to have a pirate site using "classic" in its domain name. (Silly, I know :-P) If "classic-pirates" loses to "piratebricks", I'll have no gripes, though. :) -
Ska, my lad, it's good to see that you've returned! I suggest you heed Mr Phes' advice and finish that thesis so we can see some pictures already! Thank you for providing a picture, Torden! I assume that the non-LEGO string has the bulbous end? It looks pretty similar to what TLC uses. Does it have a name?

Darkspawn, I was blown away when I saw this beauty on brickshelf! Just as the others have said, it has a very unique architectural style. The red and bley also compliment each other surprisingly well. (I'd post a more in depth review, but I'm starting to get sleepy. Great work, though!)

Welcome back, mrts. I like your latest creation

Heh, heh, as Asuka said, this is one heavily armed viking boat. There are too many catapults on the boat for my taste, but it is an interesting build. I like the use of the wing pieces. I could imagine that when the vikings tamed their fiery foes they might use them to transport their boats across inconveniently placed land masses. Someone should get to work on this MOC idea! By the way, what type of camera were you using and was it positioned on a tripod at the time? (Have you also considered resizing your photos? It adds a bit of professionalism to your MOC folder and can be helpful to those without high-speed internet.)

It seems avatar isn't selling too well from where I live at least. I visited a local shopko and found two of the $50 fire nation ships on clearance for half off. (I was only able to pick up one because of low cash reserves.) They also didn't mention vikings at all... which pretty much confirms that we won't be seeing their theme again, I guess (although I thought I could make out a few vikings in the background of the new Castle Theme's poster). Everything else sounds great. Kudos to TLC for making 2006 a wonderful LEGO year. Let's hope this year's even better!

Happy birthday, Simonwillems and Dukeschunke!
Berry Syedow replied to El Bucanero's topic in Community
Happy Birthday, mates! (even if we haven't met) :-) -
If we wanted to be as precise as possible then I'm sure we wouldn't be building with bricks. It just seems that this particular rope is the closest match to the rope used on actual ships (of the past...). You're probably right about the smoothness, but at the scale we're dealing with it can sometimes be hard to emulate the same textures accurately. Now we have one more thing in common. X-D This is why I hope to use a braiding device of some sort... Could you post a side by side comparison? This is one aspect of LEGO String that rubs me the wrong way. (If you know what I mean. :-P)

Hmm, maybe there is a use for the +4 pirate hull after all! ;-) If anyone could take a picture of their +4 pirate hull in the tub, I'd be most thankful! And perhaps someone with a +4 pirate hull could explain why it floats so well?

An early sign of a SYSTEM Pirate theme revival?
Berry Syedow replied to Athos's topic in LEGO Pirates
Once again, TLC's pirate sets are plagued with more erroneous inaccuracies in order to appeal to a wider audience. :-| I mean, really, a baby for a buccaneer all the while inflicting cruelty upon children? Tsk, tsk, TLC, for shame! ;-) -
After sifting through some threads I came upon THIS picture, which I also posted on "classic-castle.com". Now we can all release a collective sigh of relief. :'-)

I seem to remember watching a viking special on the history channel that mentioned that many successful viking leaders went on to become actual kings in parts of Europe. The vikings were eventually assimilated into the more civilized European culture and then all but forgotten... Maybe a more learn-ed European "history guy" could correct us? *looks for snefroe* You know, if TLC had taken a more realistic approach the jelly beans I would have warmed up to them a lot better. All they really needed to do was color *pointy visors* and armors (slightly more realistically?) and then put more sensible emblems on their shields, but nooo... The latest Castle Theme is an entirely different story.

Ah well, I'm sure you'll find a way to funnel your ingenuity into a better ballista design. (and maybe funnel some of that stuff my way, too ;-)) In the mean time, does anyone else have a decent camcorder and loose bricks ripe for ballisting? :-D

Woah, 007, you nearly broke my randometer with your out of control randomness. ;-) (I really just wanted to use the word randometer, which should be pronounced, ran-dom-iter. Now I -
I would REALLY like to see TLC expand the UCS sets into other themes. (especially castle and pirates) My only concerns would be that a UCS Castle would be in bley. I'd much rather have a tan or black or even white castle (With red roofing perhaps? There's an idea...) then have to deal with a bley one. As for the cafe, if it's any good and not too pricey (<150 or so) then I'll probably get one.

I sincerely hope that you're right, Shakar. I like grill helmets just fine, but if I had a choice I'd go with the pointed visor in a heart beat. (Especially considering my measly collection of *zero*. :-() It's about time my knights had some decent visors!

That ballista is something else. I would definitely like to see it outside of the boat, on some wheels, perhaps? Do you have decent camcorder? Let's see some video footage of that baby in action! :-D

I'm surprised this MOC didn't receive more replies... This is my favorite of your viking collection, ZCerberus. The use of the head on the end of the battering ram is very inventive! I also don't feel the technic bricks detract too much from the realism of the model. (Did the Vikings ever build a battering ram in the first place? :-P ) I don't suppose you'll be spending more time building castley stuff in the future?

LEGO Islander MOCs - Got one? found one? Post it here
Berry Syedow replied to KAHUKA's topic in Pirate MOCs
My mistake, Mr. Tiber! I meant to place this post in the MOC ship thread, but somehow clicked on this one instead. (which is strange since I thought I read through the other thread) Feel free to move this post, if you can. -
This MOC is a nice piece of work. I wonder how much this would go for at retail (were TLC to make something of this size). The "floating doors" is an interesting eye catcher and makes since at the same time (I was considering something similar in another MOC of mine, but it still needs red arched window pieces, gah!) The ability to open up the fort is a great feature for playability. The "ladder" leading up to the top of the fort is something I'd never have thought of, alone with those simple SNOT windows. Nice job, LBaixinho!

Certainly if a LEGO ship were even able to support its own weight in water, wouldn't the cut off at the hull have a serious effect on the balance of the ship? (like ImperialScout mentioned) When I cleaned a few of my bricks in the tub along with the DOS' two hull parts I remember being surprised that the hull parts wouldn't sink (in the upright position). After about 45 minutes of soaking in the tub, both hull pieces had finally sunken into the depths of Davy Jone's Locker...

The French frigate L'Orient: Work in progress
Berry Syedow replied to Bonaparte's topic in Pirate MOCs
Bonaparte, your ship looks very nice so far. I like how the bow has a bit of a curve to it. I noticed that the ship's sides slope out a bit. Is this a development inspired by Legeaux? I think I remember his ships being the first to do this, but I might be mistaken. Anyhow, I like it. I also agree that the cannon spacing is spot on. I look forward to your completed vessel! By the way, is there any reason that the base-plate is upside down? -
Ah, yes, the almighty 300! I hope that this movie is worthy of its price of admission, and so far it looks like it'll be good. By the way, I present a Super Hero, LIKE NONE OTHER!
