I have always considered those scale questions very irrelevant. Why different ships should have the same scale ? They have to meet different requirement, building techniques, uses specific parts, etc. Two ships have generally different challenges, hence different scales. Whatever. You are lucky with this one. By a happy accident, my Jedi Interceptors are exactly the same scale as 10215. They are 1:17.

Thank you all for your messages. :) It is cool you like the cockpit. Cause it was not an easy part. :) I will post a message here the day it is ready. Well, back in 2010, 10215 didn't sell that well. So no matter how cool a Jedi Interceptor can be, I am not sure TLG will release such a product some day... Not to mention that 1 set with both fighters would do a 2,100 part set. And probably a 250€ MSRP. That is quite a lot for 2 ships which are virtually identical. Reproducing them as MOC is much more expensive, though. There is a lot to do with prequel movies. And smaller ships/vehicle are what I do for some time : UCS AAT, UCS Hailfire Droid, UCS Sith Infiltrator, and now UCS Jedi Interceptor. I have to say that I had a lot of fun doing these designs. :)

UCS Hailfire Droid by Anio, sur Flickr UCS Hailfire Droid by Anio, sur Flickr The model is made out of about 1,070 Lego parts. The big rings can rotate so that the vehicle can drive. The model has a lot of details : - missiles on the top - the red eye and the mandible - rotating cannon below - fake cylinders on the "arms" - some details in textures : small greeebles, tiles/studs, small dark brown areas - the blade suspensions, with flexs and road signs (!) - the details of the motors, reproduced with SW printed dishes. The building process started with the rings that had to fit with Lego bricks. And having the rings stuck was not an option. The rings had to be able to rotate, otherwise, I would just have canceled the project. :o I end up with this solution : The plates 2x2 with pin have a 1L liftarm (small DBG ring) that goes into the wheel and support it. There are 4 of these per wheel. Those parts are frictionless, so the x784 big rings rotate correctly. That was to support the rings. And to guide them even better, there are hinge tops (black) on the sides of the structure. Those parts make slightly less than an half plate thick, so it enables me to slightly reduce the width of the hole, and so to guide the rings correctly, still without friction. It was quite a challenge to design it, but I am glad it works. The setup is reliable and has very little friction. It tends to slip on a very slick surface of course, but works really good on anything else (wood, textile, paper, anything). If you are familiar with Technic sets, the build has much less friction than a Technic model with big tracks (42028, 42038 for example). The chassis is also interesting. With few studless and studful bricks, I got something very strong. The tile 2x2 with pins (dark bluish gray) locks the build. There is also some SNOT more or less everywhere. Technic parts to attach the missiles strongly. There are also some Technic parts to link the wheels to the arms. Here are all the components. The build can be considered as modular. Maybe you already want to press Ctrl+W. :o Whatever. Here is the thing : UCS BB-8 by Anio, sur Flickr It is made out of 2107 elements. Of course it uses the same approach as R2D2 10225. Note that I said the same approach. Not the same scale. Those are 2 different things. I tried to do the details on the ball as accurately as I could. The details are more or less the same. I mean, as close to the original as what it is possible to do with "pixel art". The ball is a sculpture, with jumpers to make it more round. The head capture most of the details the real BB-8 has to offer. UCS BB-8 by Anio, sur Flickr The model stand on a support which enables the droid to take many positions on it. So it is possible to tilt the droid in more or less any direction. UCS BB-8 by Anio, sur Flickr It is hardly noticeable on those pics, but the build it totally modular. Here are the modules : - 2 modules for the structure inside the ball - 6 sides of the ball - head - supports The 2 modules for the inner structure are not link together. They are just stuck in each other. In other words, the 6 sides of the ball hold together with the 2 inner modules, and the 2 inner modules hold together with the 6 sides of the ball. The trickiest part of the design process was to have an axle going out of the ball. The angle of the axle is out of the system, so it is made with Technic connector toogle 44. And to prevent those parts from moving, the Technic connectors are stuck between plate 1x2 with ball socket. It took me quite a long time to design that section. Under the head, a dish smoothen the ball and works as a turntable. This way, the head can spin. :) See the model in real bricks here : That's it for that model. :) Buidling instruction soon. :) Anio

UCS Juggernaut A6 by Anio, sur Flickr UCS Juggernaut A6 by Anio, sur Flickr With that MOC, my goal was to build something accurate, cumbersome, detailed and functionnal. But what was essential is that it had to be pretty small. Actually, the model is about 1,400 parts. Working on the textures was also a key to get a nice looking and detailed model. I used that pic a lot to design my model : The size of my model was more or less defined by the wheels 2903, like set 8098. These wheels were IMO the best choice for a Juggernaut. I choose to make fake suspensions and I included a real steering mechanism. The hog is hidden in a turret. Then, I added the details. I did not wanted all the surfaces to look empty so I added a lot of textures, just like what I did on the chassis. I added dark red lines like on the real model. I also added assymetrcial dark red touches in the same spirit as 10179, for the model not to be too neat. Hi, IMO, you should rather proceed that way : - what ship is relevant to do with a UCS treatment - and then what ship can be made properly with lego elements You will see that there is not a lot of SW ships which comply with those 2 statements.

Really ? Oo But when you produce a kit, you have to deal with 100K parts, don't you ? I suppose you take only new parts. Can you tell what average price per part do you have ? It would be something interesting to know given the huge quantities you buy.- 20 replies

No problem. My review are not published yet. 42068 will come this week end, 42069 in the next week, and 42070 after. I have quite a good opinion on 42070, though. I do not think that the model is meh. More details when I publish my review. -

My point is that it took 40 years to see such a (simple) axle in an official product. I guess that adding suspension generally doesn't takes much when steering and transmission are here already. So, they always included suspension when an axle had steering + transmission. -

Information regarding lego designers is very reliable on techlug.fr Sometimes, it is something we can guess. And it is actually quite funny to guess who did what model (and I confirm, 42068 looks very much like Alfred style). But if the name of a designer is written in a techlug review, you can be sure there is no mistake : I got the information from people inside TLG (Technic team manager and designers). -
The ball is maybe built with dish 6x6 and 8x8 on the sides, and maybe in the "corners". Just a suggestion. Never tried something like that. And so ? How is it design ? Details ? Printed parts (dishes) ? UCS stand ? Describe it !

Are you sure about that ? 100€ MSRP won't make such a big model for a set that is supposed to be UCS. I would say 900-1000 parts.

Thanks ! Did they reach me ? Not at all. Being credited and inspiring other Lego fans is flattering. Being copied and ripped off is not flattering. Those who say they would be flattered probably do lego stuff that no one would be interested in stealing. Financial hardship ? If we consider that some kind of retribution is due, then yes.
