4x4 Rock Crawler
Doc_Brown posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hi Everyone, This year I have started building with stud less design, having not built anything out of Lego for some 15 years. I have just finished my first 4x4 Rock Crawler and thought I would share it with everyone. The first model that actually works well! haha. It features a unique suspension system that allows the live axles to really flex (this probably has been done tho). The downside is the tow-balls pop out. Please check it out on YouTube. Any advice, comments are much appreciated. IMG_59282 by Doc_brown1, on Flickr- 31 replies

Are you satisfied with the 2013 sets?
Doc_Brown replied to Rishab N's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes I agree! And I just had a brilliant idea on something that I can't find anyone has done. I decided to buy 42007 this weekend, and was a little disappointed. :( Front suspension does not work too well, needs to be upright a bit more. 6/10 overall. Not nearly as good as 8838, which I loved as a kid, till I destroyed in the sand pit. -

CV joints new seem to be about $2.00US on BL for USA stores, so including my time and material I feel $20 for 4 is reasonable? -

OMG looks amazing! I would be very proud to call it my own, excellent job! Why did you get sick of it? Would you be so kind to take a detailed pic of back suspension? I'm trying to stabilize mine with the ball rod axle just like yours, and cant work out how to get it strong. -

Old Shames: Your worst MOCs.
Doc_Brown replied to Saberwing40k's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Here's my first one this year, it looks good, but dang the engineering was terrible! Every gear crunched and barely moves. The steering would disintegrate after just the slightest bump. As long as we learn from our "disasters" its not a waste of time. -

I make the washers from the top of an old tumbler ware lid. I found its the perfect thickest of 1mm. Yes it is flexible, but I feel if it were more stiffer it would perform better. It does make a heck of a difference tho, but unfortunately under very high stress will still grind gears, but does save a lot of wear and tear on the diff. :) Thanks again, Hopefully I will get a chance to. Unfortunately the new wheel hubs are kinda crap IMO. So I have switched to the 8070 set ones. They turn and dont "lock up" at all. Much better. Lost the gearing down after the diffs tho. :( HAHA thanks, I sure hope so too. Sweet! Can't remember if the BTR of the top of my head is independent or like pendulum. How did you try yours? still waiting on my orders. Geez I hate waiting when I have so many things to do and make. -

Wow, that is awesome, I'm loving the simple design. How do the gears inside the motor hold up? I'm guessing they would take a beating.- 10 replies

9395 RC Mod - Ugly but it works

Custom parts
Doc_Brown replied to AKM_76's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is a great topic. I consider myself to be 99% Lego Purist, but I will use 3rd party wheels simply because the larger ones look and perform much better. Also if you want to sell your large Lego wheels, not being scratched up with help with resale value. Heres my contribution to custom parts, I simply had to do this as there is no other way to get the strength. After installing a brand new CV joint and testing my Patria 8x8 I destroyed a CV in 4 seconds on level ground! I feel this was necessary because I have not changed the part design or its function in any way, simply improved the material. It works perfectly fine now, and I feel confident that it will withstand some offloading. You could argue that without this mod the model would not be possible, and I would agree with you. However I'm trying to build the model like it really exists, and I believe dedication to accuracy is more important in most cases. Feel free to express your opinion on what I have done. I don't effend, so all good. Just interested to know. -
