Cool! I love the tree.

Excellent! I'd only add a dedicated driver. Have you ever considered rasing the tower a bit and give it a more 'towery' impression: http://www.livius.org/a/1/carthage/war_elephant_apm.JPG http://campaign-game-miniatures.0catch.com/newline-war-elephant.jpg I am not sure if this is possible though. Anyway nice work!

[MOC] GoT/ASOIAF: Aerys discovers the Wildfire
Flieger replied to Flieger's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Thanks to all your compliments! Nice of you to ask, but I will stick to GoT for a while and considering how much stuff GRRM provides I will stick to it a long while... Indeed, it is really Robert style going without helmet, but I vaguely remember he had one during the Battle of the Trident iirc. ... and yes, a GoT line would make me bankrupt soon, moreso than LotR ever could. I love LotR, but ASOIAF offers a greater wealth of characters and places I care for. I never cared for the Easterlings or the Elves e.g., but I could sympathize with both Baratheon and Targaryen. Then I like the Starks (who does'nt), the Free Cities, the .............. I could go on forever. The fact that GRRM does not have a clear cut good vs evil like Tolkien makes things a lot more difficult. With Lego LotR I am contend with my Rohirrim :) -
Hello Forum, my very first moc, be gentle please, but do not spare critics. I know the background is a little unimaginative, that is because I just started again with Lego and currently I am focussed on the minifigs. The scene is from the time Aerys’s mental health began to decline. Tywin Lannister is still at court, and Aerys has just discovered wildfire but not yet used. He is preparing for it though and his son Rhaegar is clearly appalled. (The lightning of the scene was provided by my LEDs-lights and did not need to be photoshopped. Though if I should have, please tell me) The scene: Full size here: The minifigs: Aerys with the Wildfire: Rhaegar and Tywin: Regards

...only if you have a lot time and patience. The first 300 pages of GoT were hard for me, but after that I could not put it away and I have loved all the sequels. The TV show is not bad really, and fairly close to the books as far as I have seen it (season 3 has not yet aired in my country, so please no spoilers). So in case you lack time and patience you can go for the TV show. On topic of licenses... they are a two-edged sword really. We must not forget the SW-license was pivotal in saving TLG and they are doing a very good job doing the license justice. Take a look at Hasbro's failed Clone Wars line, and you'll see what I mean. For example Lego may have erred in the Barrel Escape being to early, but Hasbro always took literary a year to come up with the characters seen in the TV show; add to it poor overall character selection and ever decreasing quality in material, paint and articulation and the demise of that line was easily foreseeable. Long story short, as long as TLG keeps up it's good work on the licensed lines I am ok with it.

Very cool idea! I like the small details like the chin-straps to the helmets (I may steal that in the future...). The one gripe I have is the use of Rohirrim helmets, because they are too easily recognizable and even iconic. There are some licensed pieces of armour which can go for anything, like the PoP Guards of Alamut-helmet - it is really just a pointy helmet. But that Rohirrim one makes me think FORTH EORLINGAS!! at once. Sorry that the critique took longer than the praise
-
That may be because one can rather easily recreate the Rangers without new molds, thus one can do something fairly close to the movie. Hood, cape, bow, quiver... it is all there already. For the regular Gondorians you'd need a new helmet mold and maybe a new shield (although they may end up reprinting the legionary shield). The Rohirrim are done I fear. Hopefully we will see Eowyn with a new helmet, but even if we are lucky.

General Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Questions
Flieger replied to jmagaletta's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
As far as the minifigs go, I feel that the Mirkwood spiders offer more for the money. -
Why's that? ASOIAF has so many great and divers buildings that beg to be made by Lego.

[MOC] GoT/ASOIAF: Aerys discovers the Wildfire
Flieger replied to Flieger's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Thanks! Next one will be Targaryen as well, but in Essos and much bigger Maybe Dany in Astapor, since I hope one can recreate that fairly well with PoP, Pharaoh's Quest and IJ. But this moc will take a while... Until then a little shot of the Trident: I know most have them on foot, but I think they were on horseback. Would make sense for knights, wouldn't it? If you have any idea what could be used for an antler helmet, please tell me... Then I will give Robert is proper headdress. -
The Orthanc, yes!! Many thanks. But could you take better pics please?
-
Ok, I understand. Well, that about the dragon and the red is very much a matter of taste, but there is no way to put mail halfway decent on a minifig. Single rings usually had a diameter of 6mm in antiquity and the middle ages. Scaling down that on minifig level is simply impossible. Likewise the scales of Lego's scale armor are too large etc. Lego always had a more fantasy approach to armor, which is perfectly fine with me. The basic helmet disappoints me too. I never liked that one.

Hope Smaug will be brick built to allow its gigantic size... (save all the molds we can for the cool stuff, and reuse as much as possible - or go brick built)

Brilliant stuff, although it is a bit weird that bilbo is taller than Gandalf. I know Bilbo is the central figure thus needs to be on top, but this is better done by seating Gandalf imo. Nevertheless, I love it.

Why? I think they have the best heraldry in ages, and not just because I like Targaryens
-
To be honest, the Starks traditionally have black hair, and Eddard also did, so at least a black hairpiece would be better, although I certainly agree on using Bean's face. As for the Iron Throne itself: gorgeous!! The only way to make it better is to replace that purple shield with the heater shield of the wolfpack - has a much better wolf, colour and mirrors the lion heater shield. Don't take these suggestions as an offense, I thoroughly enjoyed these pics. I am a ASOIAF-fan and would definetly like to see more of your mocs!

Someone had an archaeology lesson, I like! Really good stuff, especially the pastas-houses. (or is it prostas ... ? Ah, that was ages ago...) On the contrary: Hippodamos rules!

Indeed, especially if you are living in continental Europe, where Lego prices are twice as high. I am a die-hard LotR-fan and I earn quite some money, but even I had to think hard about some sets before I bought them. No way kids could be doing this, unless their parents are rich or so. Even for the key three - Aragon, Legolas and Gimli - you need to spend a lot. Keep in mind: LotR-fellowship-Legolas is only available in Moria's mines! So you will have to combine it with Helm's Deep or Weathertop, putting you well into the 140 Dollar/Euro price range. And that is a lot. So have to agree with Deathleech, it is probably too expansive for most. Fortunately the Corsair-Ship will adress this problem. (Too late for me, but there is ebay).

General Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Questions
Flieger replied to jmagaletta's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
What's more:The whole point of Sauron in the LotR-books/films is to have an non-corporal evil. Fortunately Jackson had enough brains to understand that and cut Sauron from the Battle at the Black Gate. Besides, I never liked Jackson's idea of Sauron's armour. Sure I know I am in a minority with this opinion, but rejoice: there are evil captains we have not seen yet, the Witch-King, Gothmog, Grima and the Southron-commander (although totally different from the Black Serpent in the book). I think can all agree at least on the Witch-King's importance. -
Being a classicist, I like that very much and hope to see more
-
Nothing short of amazing! I especially like St.George (even with the English red cross on white shield) and those Rohan shields are a perfect match for the last Dragon knights. Have to remember that... May I ask where the dragon's head is coming from, the one St.G slays?
-
It's even worse with Thorin's Company. Despite having a quite considerable budget for Lego I gave up on that and will restrict myself to ebay and the likes to get the dwarves. Re: the Orthanc The tower itself is not exactly full of possibilities for play features like Helm's Deep was for example. The architecture itself is not too fancy neither. I love it and I'd certainly buy, but the Orthanc is really just for AFoLs I think - which is why I do not think we will see many minifigs. However there is the chance of Grima, who would not require new molds just printing. Again, he probably has little appeal to children or casual parent buyers, yet for us he is a must-have. He adds to the attractivity of the tower to the whole AFoL-community. Add Saruman, since you have done him already anyway, and we have a fine set for collectors. But I really do not see any way the Orthanc could be made a children's/casual buyers set.

Well, of course I share the general disappointment about the generic orcs, but let's face it: orcs are a somewhat generic evil, and the good guys always got more attention from Lego I feel. I mean there are more important things than new orcs, which only could be told apart by some 'nerds' (like me): the Gondorians or Southrons would be far more distinctive and thus more recognisable by even casual fans (and parents/friends looking for presents). I must admit, if I had the choice of a new orc print with new armour molds, or a Gondorian soldier including all his new molded stuff, I would choose the latter any day. And I think most of us would. I don't think we will ever see a new orc, unless in The Hobbit-sets. So we should be fair to Lego and hope for more RotK-sets with the Witch King, Gondorians, Southrons, armoured Trolls, Easterlings etc...

Relax, Book 6 has not even been published, much less Book 7. It is speculation on his/her part.
