  1. "If what your friend says is true, then I am most likely safer here at my workshop than out and about Knothole. I will defer to your groups expertise on the matter." Polaris Persuasion Check (DC: 2): (3,5,5) Two Successes Fix-It scratches the back of his head, looking confused. "Well... a little bit, I guess? I remember coming to Knothole and I remember working on shipyards in the League, but... there's this fuzzy feeling I get sometimes when I try to recollect things. I don't know, maybe it's just old age catching up on me. To be honest, Polaris, I'm not quite so sure what this has to do with anything, though." "I don't know about you, but if this Harrigan guy is a war criminal than it couldn't be the same person as Fix-It! He wouldn't hurt a fly!" Meerabeau responds defensively. Avgustus scratches his cheek and preens his moustache as he responds. "Hmm. I'll head to the marksmanship contest in that case and scout it out. If you three wish to stay here and guard Fix-It and Meerabeau then I feel confident in your ability to keep him safe. Is everyone in agreement?"
  2. "I hear enough students talk about change that it can feel daunting. A week doesn't go by without another student protest. People want change. The system is stagnant." Avgustus, seemingly hard to read, allows a concerned glare to pass through to Yelana. "My genuine fear is that in the populace's frustration they will turn to demagogues and the fringes of populist politics in a hope that they can fix the status quo. They come as outsiders who claim they are above the squabbles of the political class. Of course, they have nothing to provide but a feeling of civic pride and nationalistic zeal. When at last their scapegoat is no longer a viable threat, they will move onto another one to blame. We must win battles against them every time, for they only need to win once for the framework of civil society to be reshaped into their own grotesque image." After Yelana's outburst, the scrapyard goes quiet as Avgustus, Meerabeau, and Fix-It stare at Yelana, the professor in silent intrigue, the two mechanics in bewilderment. Finally Meerabeau speaks up, sounding confused and concerned. "H-h-harm Fix-It? Who in their right mind would want to harm Fix-It? He's the nicest man in town!" "I can assure you, I did not build any of those toys, nor did I create any of the technology to activate them." Fix-It says, his voice trembling. "I cannot believe someone would do such a thing as take these toys and use them for ill will. What if a child found these..." "Agreed. I hope you heroes do not mind me butting in, but I suppose now I am implicated in this little operation of yours." Avgustus states calmly. "I think we can all agree Fix-It and Meerabeau are innocent in this affair with the robots. If you three believe that someone might be trying to harm Fix-It, the last major event of the day is the marksmanship contest. I imagine most residents will be congregating there soon. What do you three intend to do next?" Fix-It approaches the party slowly, hands clasped in thanks. "I cannot believe that this is all because of me. That I have put you four and Meerabeau in danger- heck, it could've been one of the children. I thank you three deeply for keeping me and Meerabeau safe."
  3. "Merei's staying behind for reasons I believe only she could explain." Zaria replies, tired. She takes a seat in the passenger area. "Even then, I do not personally believe that her explanation would be enough. Merei stayed behind because she decided to. Whether or not that was the correct call... we will soon discover. From what I understand the creature being transported, the Hydra, was awoken upon Viper's discovery. He was captured and held in a makeshift cell by the crew with the intent of handing him over to the authorities when they reached Cosmopoli. The Hydra broke free from it's container and ripped it's way through the ship, infecting members of the crew and endangering others. I worry about Greenlaw. She seems to have taken her time connected to the Hydra in a manner that I can politely describe as "unhealthy"." Zaria frowned as she mentioned Greenlaw and her obsession with the Hydra. "Viper helped us out immensely once we rescued him. As much as I am disappointed in his initial plans, I do not know if we would have survived our quarrel with the Hydra if not for him. He has my gratitude, if nothing else." Zaria nodded in appreciation towards Viper. "That would be the, as the saying goes, "short version" of the events that transpired. I would be more than willing to expound upon anything if you would like." Despite all this, Zaria glanced out into the depths of space and into the Forbidden Sector. As ghoulish as the events were that transpired on the freighter were and as hostile to life as this place was, she still found it beautifully haunting in a way. How insignificant small she was in comparison to the vastness of the void outside of the ship. It would be near divinity if only she could focus on it and not the events prior.
  4. Fix-It grows quiet, contemplative even, as he thinks through Bers' question. "Well... er... I'm not sure. "Look, I've worked with Fix-It for the past few months!" Meerabeau pips up, throwing her weight around as she stands between Bers and Fix-It. "In that time, he's done nothing but been kind, generous, and giving to the people of Knothole. I don't know where those robots came from, but he didn't make them, and neither did I!" "Well, you did refer to this Teclion fellow as her ex-boyfriend. I feel that's a little disparaging of Miss Yelana, Polaris." Avgustus shrugs. "But who am I to butt into a conversation I have no stake in? Carry on." "Well... I've gone by the name Fix-It for as long as I can remember. Everyone in town call me by that name, as does Meerabeau." "And if you're implying he made those robots to attack others, I'll fix you up real good!" Meerabeau rolls up her sleeves in an aggressive manner. Avgustus moves in to lean into Polaris. "And who is this Harrigan guy, anyways?"
  5. "I have nothing further to ask." Zaria replies to McSorley. She took a moment to try in vain to clean herself of the guts and goop slathered across her, but eventually she realized the only solution was going to be a warm bath and an extensive cleaning of her armour and clothes. She did have lingering doubts, questions in her mind. She had a deep distrust of Greenlaw. Letting her go felt wrong. It felt like she was given a chance to stop something but couldn't out of her own convictions. She had a lingering sense of unease around Merei, whose intrigue regarding the Hydra was as palpable, if more subdue and restrained. Even if she thought Kirwin was childlike, at least they seemingly understood the threat the Hydra represented. What she desired right now was peace of mind, something she doubted she'd get until she returned to Ebria and the Hall.
  6. “If I knew anyone named Teclion I would’ve told you. Hostility is not going to help anyone, Polaris.” “Goodness, a soldier?” Fix-It replies intrigued. “I am glad we have such capable and brave people looking out for us. Who would know what might’ve happened if they had attacked Meerabeau or I.” Fix-It blinks at Bers confusedly. “Harrigan? Are you alright, friend? I hope you weren’t damaged during the fight.” Meerabeau looks at Bers with a quizzical, puzzled look. “Deadcode murder gremlins? Fix-It and I tend to not work on anything capable of murder. The occasional hunting rifle gets worked on, sure, but nothing of that description. What’s going on?” Meerabeau steps between Bers and Fix-It, pointing an accusatory finger. “Are you implying Fix-It would work on such a device as one which would actively cause harm to others?! Huh?!”
  7. “It will hopefully be dragged into the sun’s gravitational pull.” Zaria replies. “There the Hydra will burn. I would like to see it destroyed: blown to pieces, but I’ll take my victories where I can get them. If we can advise would be looters and travellers to leave this damned ship alone to its fate, we should.” A thought dawned on her as she turned to Viper. “What’s the likelihood you could ask your mercenary comrades to assist us?”

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - General Discussion

Sorry to hear that, Peppermint_M, hope you feel better soon. ❤️
  9. Avgustus ponders for a moment before responding. "The war is over, Yelana. My service to the Empire was in protecting my home from a foreign aggressor. However, that is all in the past. The Drandora Accords ensure that peace maintains, and that all prosper. I teach students from the League as much as students from the Empire, and they all get the same lecture and the same history lesson. We do not know who fired the first shot, although I may be biased in my response. In the end what matters is what we learn from the successes and failures of those who came before in order to shape a better, brighter future for all. I have not heard of anyone named Teclion. I arrived along with you. Why do you ask?" As the group approaches the shed, Yelana and Bers both begin banging on the shed's wooden door, the red paint fading from age. "No one's here!" "Come on, Fix-It, it's probably the professor guy!" Meerabeau opens the door and smiles brightly at seeing the party safe. "Glad to see you four aren't dead! I hope it wasn't anything too serious." "I heard gunshots and chainsaw blades and spells going off- is everyone alright?" Fix-It's concern is visible.
  10. Zaria was torn. Greenlaw was a danger to herself as much as the rest of the crew. To let her go while she had such a disregard for the safety of everyone here irritated her to no end. Her desire for oblivion, though, did not deserve the deaths of everyone else on the ship. The hydra was a menace: to life itself. This anger crawled up her back: this desire for righteous destruction quarrelling with a desire for life. "I do not care about the cargo on this ship." Zaria spoke up. "It's stuff. It can be replaced. The lives on this ship cannot. We do not have the right to dictate who lives and who dies- not even to random chance." Zaria waved her hand in frustration. "We're getting everyone out of here and abandoning ship. We leave the Hydra to it's fate. May Varuth tear this creature apart in the void." Zaria wanted to end this here, but not at the cost of innocents. She gritted her teeth and cursed herself and her soft heart. Wherever this creature went, wherever it decided to take root, she would be there. This creature would not safely travel: she would hound it to the edges of the Arm. She would bury it back into the hole it was found in.
  11. MM Note: I think no matter the outcome, Avgustus was going to present Cassandra a memory core based on the way this encounter was going. I'm going to keep things as they are to keep the mission moving. In the future you should be more specific about what you wish to do with your actions, C_S.
  12. "I find it presumptuous you assume I'm looking for a date." Avgustus replies. " I served in counter-intelligence if you must know." MM Note: I could give you a DC for the deception check, but considering both Polaris and Bers both saw the memory cells and Polaris handled them, there is no way with your current skill set you'd be able to convince them they didn't. I'm going to consider your attempts to have failed, but if you want to know the DC I'd put it at an 8. Avgustus sighs in frustration. Avgustus Slight of Hand Check (4,5,5 +1 Success) Four Successes vs. Yelana Perception Check (1,3,3,5) One Successes "I have what you're looking for, Miss Cassandra." The adamite speaks up, producing a memory core from his person. Yelana quickly releases that during the commotion she had allowed Avgustus to slip into her bag and take one of the cores. "Sorry, I guess it slipped my mind that this of all things would've been a core." Cassandra narrows her eyes as she glares at the professor. "Give it here." Avgustus walks over to Cassandra and hands the memory core to her. She looks over it carefully. "I do not know why you of all people would be keeping this from me, but I'll be keeping a closer eye on you, professor." "Apologies, sincerely. It slipped my mind it was on my person." Avgustus smiles to Cassandra as she continues to look it over. She speaks to them as she examines it, clearly unsure of how it functions. "Be about your business. If what you say is true this memory core should exonerate you from any... repercussions." Frustrated, she places the core in her pocket, clutching it in her hand. Her hand does not remove itself from her pocket. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I do have things to attend to- the marksmanship contest to be specific." She gives a stern glance over the party as she turns around and motions for the two town watch members to follow her. "Well, that was more tense than it needed to be." Avgustus chimes in once Cassandra and the guards were out of ear shot. "Shall we go check on Fix-It?"
  13. "..." Cassandra goes quiet for a moment as she thinks through the statements provided to her, clearly coming to a conclusion based on the two heroes words. The two guards with her seem to be in thought themselves. "We can discuss who could be capable of reprogramming these toys later. Both of you cannot be correct. Either there were memory cells, or there were not. I am going to ask that they be presented to me, or I shall be forced to begin an inspection." Cassandra looks back to the guards who holster their rifles across their shoulders and prepare for an inspection. She motions for the two of them to step forward.
  14. Zaria was dissatisfied with Kirwin’s soft approach to Greenlaw’s increasingly apparent madness. “Doctor Greenlaw,” she states coldly, “I am no scientist, but I am going to have to disagree with your assessment. The Hydra is dead: slain in battle due to its avarice and danger to every living being in the Arm. This ship is to be decommissioned and scrapped upon reaching Port Charon due to contamination. The Hydra is responsible for at least a dozen deaths aboard this vessel, and if what you see is a learning opportunity,” Zaria wipes her face clean with the cloth she used to clean her blade before tossing it to the floor. She ran her hand along the crackling energy of her blade, “then perhaps it is best for the safety of everyone present and those beyond our immediate paths that your name be added to the list of the deceased.” After threatening Greenlaw, she looked to Viper, Dean, and Simon with a grim resolve, looking for their affirmation in her statement. “That, however, is not up to me to decide, Greenlaw. Ultimately this is your path to take. You would agree with me that the Hydra is dead, yes?
  15. "My group is with Heroica." Zaria replies. "From what I understand we're a fairly new organization. I suppose we're a mercenary group, but I would like to think that our guild is a bit more selective in the jobs we take, for better or worse." Zaria gives a slight smile. "I did not join up for the money. I wanted to see the Arm and spread Varuth's message through companionship and travel." She turns to listen in to Merei and Greenlaw's conversation, suspiciously eyeing the goop in doctor's hands. Some people were incapable of learning...
  16. Yelana Persuasion Check (DC: 2): (5,6,6 +1) Four Successes Yelana Insight Check (DC: 3): (1,1,3,6) One Success Avgustus straightens his bow tie as he addresses Yelana. "I know enough to make assessments of character and weigh risks. I am a professional, after all, and professionals must keep up appearances. I will note, however, that I find it adorable that you'd try and flirt with a man who doesn't swing that way, Yelana, if you catch my drift." Avgustus returns the flirtatious remark back to Yelana, but there's clearly a stinging bite in his remark. She's no closer to reading him. Yelana Persuasion Check (DC: 5): (1,2,5 +1 Success) Two Successes Yelana Insight Check (DC: 3): (4,4,6,6) Four Successes "The projector is worth a lot," Avgustus replies curtly, "and that's all you need to know. As for why I am so proficient in firearms," the adamite pushes the left side of his coat open to reveal a stout, polished looking revolver, "I served during the war. When it ended, I went back to teaching as a professor of history and military conflict, now having first hand experience to the terror of the class I now teach: Five Years War 101, 201, and 301. My service revolver stays by my side, especially out in the boonies." Yelana feels as if Avgustus is not being wholly honest with her. As exceptional as he is at keeping a straight face, she feels as if somewhere in his statement he's leaving things out. The two share a knowing glance. Yelana has a feeling Avgustus knows about her insight. Yelana Insight Check (DC: 2): (2,5,5,6) Three Successes Thinking back, nothing comes to mind that would have allowed for the activation of the murderous toys. The most likely means the toys were activated was another device, one neither of them seemingly had or made motions of activating. Yelana Sleight of Hand Check (DC: 3): (1,3,5,6 +1 Success) Three Successes Yelana succeeds in pocketing the the five memory cores without anyone noticing. "Malfunctioning deadcode robot bears?" Mayor Cassandra replies, each word out of her mouth more confused and worried. She looks at the scrapped bears and the hulking endo-skeleton on the ground as she squints her eyes, thinking through the scene. A moment passes before she responds. "There were memory cores involved? I would like to see them if they're present." "I can corroborate the trio's story." Avgustus speaks up cordially. "We came to visit the resident tinkerer when-" "I understand that part!" Cassandra replies with a shout. "If these deadcode memory cores are present I would like to see them." She looks to the heroes expectantly.
  17. "I did get what I wanted, I suppose." Zaria manages to find the cloth to clean her blade, miraculously clean, and begins to remove the goo from her weapon. "Granted, things may have gotten a little heated in the moment, but the Hydra will no longer terrorize these people." She looked over the people present and grimaced. "I think it is safe to assume, with the Root destroyed, that the ship does not need to be destroyed anymore, not that I think I have the option to do so anymore." She looks at Kirwin as he tampers with the destruct button. "I am willing to take you up on that offer." Zaria replies. "I have no compulsion to leave my current occupation, but I would be more than willing to meet some others in this profession."
  18. "We can discuss this later." Avgustus replies quietly, taking a drag on his cigarette as Mayor Cassandra Skyreach approaches into the junkyard, looking irritated. Flanking her are two elves in blue uniforms, quickly identified as members of the town watch. Both carry rifles equipped with gleaming energy bayonets. "What is the meaning of this?!" Cassandra shouts at the group as she stomps towards them. "I hear reports of gunshots and loud screeching sounds from Fix-It's, and you three are here!" She looks disappointingly at Bers. "And who is this?!" She points to Avgustus as he calmly stomps out his cigarette in the dirt. "Apologies, my lady. I am professor Avgustus-" "You know what, I don't care, you're trouble." She interrupts Avgustus, pointing at him. "I want an answer, and I want one now. What's going on?! I am supposed to be overseeing the Marksmanship Contest shortly, and instead I'm looking into you four! And where the hell is Fix-It!" She glares at the group expectantly.
  19. Zaria emerges from the Root, dripping with ooze and slime as she hacks her way through the Root. Uttering a battle cry, she viciously cut her way through the back, landing on her stomach, scrambling to get up afterwards. She breathes heavily, stumbling on her feet as surveys the surrounding battlefield. She closes her eyes in preparation for a prayer as more inert Hydra falls on her from the ceiling. She grimaces as she is drenched in gunk, awash in discomfort. A futile effort was made to remove the Hydra gunk from her, but she knew it would take more than a shower to get it fully out. She stiffly raises her hand to utter a prayer but pauses. Opening her eyes and seeing the damage done, she lowers her hand. "May Varuth dull your senses and lead you astray." She states to the Root. She knew it couldn't hear it in body, but in spirit there might be a chance. She looked to see Greenlaw trying desperately to collect samples of the Root. There was a desire to stop her, but her legs begun to feel like lead. Exhausted, she stepped over the Root and towards the party. "One day, Kirwin, I will teach you the Varuthi Rite of Dissatisfaction, and then you will find it interesting." Zaria remarks. "As a representative of the faith, I do not mind introducing you to our most well known and brutal tactic." "Same for you, Viper." Zaria nods. "I think we have a few more loose ends to wrap up, but thank you for your assistance. I do not believe this battle would have ended the same if you were not with us."
  20. "This ends now!" Zaria strikes the root. Varen moves to D3, rallies Zaria.
  21. Avgustus frowns at Polaris' proposal. "Hmm... I do not like the proposal that the bears were designed as a distraction... or perhaps some other form of deterrent. Hmm... You may not have said this, Miss Polaris, but Bers did on the bus." Avgustus points to Bers. "What was it, my friend? Guild equipment that needed to be fixed? You didn't say it was weapons, but one could assume so based on your previous statement. You wouldn't lie to me, would you?" Avgustus asks pointedly, his cigarette shortening in his fingers. The sound of footsteps echoes through the scrapyard. Someone was approaching.
  22. Zaria roars in frustration as she takes a desperate swipe at the tendril connected to Kirwin. "Vyper, Varen, on the tower-looking one!" (Vyper to E4, fire on Meieospore, Varen to D5, fire on Meiospore.)
  23. "Thank you, Bers." Avgustus takes his flask back. "I imagine that our scuffle will likely attract some kind of investigation, especially considering the shooting competition hasn't started yet. I can perhaps smooth things over for you regarding whoever comes to investigate, but that's up to you three." Avgustus puts a hand into his coat pocket as he takes a drag off his smouldering cigarette. "I've been told I am quite persuasive at times."
  24. OOC: There’s a part of me that wants to try ending combat by just going in for the kill, but I also think having Merei up is better than having her down. Thoughts?
  25. Yelana Insight Check (DC: 3): (1,2,3,6) One Success Despite her best attempts to get a read on Avgustus, she cannot get a read on the professor. He returns her glance with a look over of his own, his moustache curling into a slight smile as he does so. Yelana gets the feeling Avgustus can sense her suspicions of him, and perhaps a little bit more... Avgustus squints his eyes as Yelana questions him, smiling calmly in response. It's obvious though he finds the accusation annoying. "Meerabeau is currently safe with Mr. Fix-It in their shed. Considering you three took roughly four minutes to take out these toys I did my civic duty and came out to ensure you were alright. I mean, I could've left you three to chase that last teddy bear around the scrapyard if you would have preferred me to do so. Besides, I'm none to keen on mercenaries running about the place, especially ones gallivanting about in black armour, my dear." Avgustus replies to Yelana. He takes out a metal cigarette case and proceeds to finger one of the cigarettes out, lighting it up with a lighter produced from his pocket. Taking in a deep exhale, he billows a plume of blue smoke beside him and respectfully out of the party's direction. He closes the cigarette case and returns it to his coat's inner pocket. "I could ask you three the same question. Looking to repair weapons for your guild? Come now: it's cheaper to replace weapons nowadays then get them repaired at the rate some of the corporations churn out their mass produced firearms. Considering how much of an upstart Heroica is, I find it impractical to come all the way out here to seek Fix-It when it's far more simple to just buy the weapons wholesale. Laserie had a lot of money to her name, but not enough to throw around. It's quite difficult for the dead to make money." Yelana Technology Check (DC: 3): (2,5,6 +1 Success) Three Successes Looking over the device, Yelana comes to the conclusion that the device was some kind of remote receiving device. Although scratch built, the device is similar to ones used in the activation of deadcode robot soldiers and security guards. However, the device contains a ripple pulse, which when activated turns on any other device near it connected to its frequency. A quick overview of the teddy bears reveals that both the teddy bears and the endo-skeleton share the same frequency as the receiving device. It is likely connected to a second device, an activator.
