  1. Perhaps the new theme park needs a better transport which can maneuver in the city, right? Based on my previous truck design, I did this for moving the raptors. The tractor section has a turret that can be used for any emergency cases like dinosaur escape, and now raptor transport can go through the city without problem! Hope you enjoy this :) thanks!

[ MOC ] The Grand Mall

Hi everyone, just a few days before 2017 arrives and I managed to get this building done! As the economy of V City (my LEGO world) is going strong, the old Grand Emporium needs an upgrade too. Unlike many people who would buy more of the set and stack the stories up, I took a different approach from an architect's point of view. I got the inspiration from the book shelf of mine, and thought what if I added more books to the shelf? I would push the books aside and insert the new ones. And I got the idea for the new annex of the department store. The new building is just like new blocks inserted into the old one, and the expansion is not merely an increase of volume or floor area, but also a re-establishment of the icon. The new shop becomes a new landmark in the city (again). The design is clearly an insertion, but not invasion of the old. The new wing has a larger entrance, while the old revolving door is still kept. Let's start with the G/F. This floor is the supermarket, with one side having a double-volume space. You can also see that I kept some iconic features from the old emporium, namely the gift deco and escalators. All these link to the old memories... There is also a little information counter, if you are lost or if you have lost something. Going up to 1/F is the kitchenware section, and you can find the fashion section next to it. Wait, is that...Scarlet Witch? Further up is the 2/F kid section, with a fully stocked LEGO shelf! You can also find other toys here. The other side of the kid section is a book section. Mums can play with their kids too there. Snack corner is near the escalator, while you can find the restroom too. The roof originally was not used for anything (or a rest area for the window cleaners?), but after the renovation, you can enjoy a drink at the sky bar. Sometimes you can find the Avengers too. The model is also "slice-able", as you can open it up to reveal all the different sections inside. So the new Grand Mall is in business, and you can start getting some new things for the new year. Enjoy!

[ MOC ] Mail Box at V City

Thanks everyone! I guess it is easy to reach this kind of appearance with LEGO bricks, showing smooth and clean lines and surfaces. The hard part is how to arrange the spaces within such clean language and look. Let me take a good picture of it next to the other buildings!

[ MOC ] Mail Box at V City

Finally! This is the Mail Box! I took quite some time off from my last creation, and now I finally realized what was in my hand for quite some months. This yellow building is my latest modern architecture creation, and clearly, it is the place where you post your letters and get other mailing services, the post office! Many people would use up most of the inches for a corner building design, but I want to reclaim the space for the people. How about a negative building? I decided to remove the walls along the pavement, and create a nice, welcoming semi-outdoor space. Then the building will start to "climb" onto the remaining walls, as if they are inserted into the planes. I used grey for the horizontal box indicating that this is the public area. You can do your mailing at the counter or get help. You can also buy postcards and other mail products. The above is the black box, which is the office, the staff-only place. You can post your letters outside. Note the local and air mailboxes! The blue one is stamp vending machine. Buy, stick and post! On the other side of the yellow wall is the loading bay, and you can see things are just scattered around, with parcels pending delivery...the other side is the lift shaft, with a workable lift! The mail car parks here, and ready to be loaded and go! The first floor is the office where the postmen sort the letters. Looks like they need to have OT today... The second floor is where the manager sits. You can also find special delivery section here. They are brainstorming about how to deliver these silver bricks. Who is that artist? He is the designer for the post products, like the first-day-of-issue! The computer? For the drones! Yes, the drones! With these little robots, speed delivery will be really...speedy. No need to wait for any man or car to send your urgent letters! Hope you enjoy this! Now start posting!

[ MOC ] Mail Box at V City

Hi, thanks for the comments! Sorry for being late to reply, and here is a shot of my lift shaft: You can see the lift will be held by the walls (when all the floors are inserted back) and so it won't fall out, and nothing sticks out so that the building can still be attached to the other one side by side without problem. The lift is not a square but in a slight L-shape, and that is why it will be "pushed" into the black wall part (you can imagine by looking at the bottom of the shaft). Hope that helps!

[ MOC ] Mail Box at V City

It took me actually a month to sketch and design, while the building work took around a week...pretty fast actually when most of the bricks are ready, haha... Thanks Henchmen! Actually, you are right, I didn't just sketch and jump to this design. I actually did 5-6 sketches to reach this final design, before using the bricks to test the idea out. :) I only showed the final sketch right before the actual construction work. Good guess! Thanks everyone!

Thanks! And I like what you said about architecture. It is a kind of art, and people have different tastes for different art. About the light colors, I should be posting better pictures. My bad! My MOC does not have any instructions, sorry about that. However, I am more than happy to answer any question if you are working on your own emporium expansion!

[ MOC ] Modular Disney Store

The first shop along the main street of V City is a small one with a big name. The new Disney Store offers different products of its several franchises, including PIXAR and Star Wars. The client (of course I am making this up) wants a small modern building, but contains some essence of its brand. Undoubtedly the castle becomes the starting point for my design brainstorming session. My initial idea is a little box with a castle, and I began to break down the important elements from the castle to form the design language. I converted the moat into the planters by the sides of the entrance, and created a frame to signify a portal to the magical worlds. That can be seen from some castles where you will have a big portal at the bridge across the moat. The facade profile of the building comes from the two side towers above, and I only extracted the cut-corner shape. This slightly chamfered entrance also helps the portal stand out better. The building interior is simple, and is divided into several themes. First it is the Star Wars zone, where guests can find a lot of Star Wars toy and apparels. You can also design your own lightsaber at the “Build Your Own Lightsaber” shelf, and I made reference from the existing shops in Disneyland. Another side is the traditional Disney products, from traditional Disney stories. You can find girl items and dolls (you may ask about teddy bear, and yes Disney has one called Duffy and Shelliemay!), and also some cups and bottles. The deco is simple with wood planks, with the famous clock of Cinderella. Up the stairs will be 1/F, where you are greeted by the Toy Story shelf and the Lightyear figure. You can try the 3-eye Alien headpiece! Turning around is the much anticipated Frozen shelf, with all the icy items you can purchase! See that girl who is in love with the Snowgie cushions? You can also meet Elsa, Anna and Olaf and take pictures with them! Then you will see the little food corner, facing the staircase to the roof top. I spent quite some time to work out the fixtures, and I am happy that they look very much like the real thing inside Disneyland. The roof is a little green playground for kids, and you can meet the two iconic characters of Disney, Mickey and Minnie! Kids are queuing up to take great pictures with them, and later you will see even more other characters around the year. While I can design a simple hinged door on the rooftop, I created this version so that the panel can be folded up once more to avoid visual intrusion (if it is one big panel, it will stand up and be seen behind the tower on the front elevation! Not good!) Of course, I need a photo with my wife, Mickey and Minnie! Let's have a group photo, all the Disney characters with the shop! (okay, Buzz forgot to come out as he is still inside on the 1/F!) Hope you all enjoy it!

[ MOC ] Modular Disney Store

Thanks everyone! Indeed, there is no window here since most of the modern shops have artificial lighting and ventilation. With no windows, the shop can utilize all the wall space for the wall-bays and shelves. Of course, if there are windows the shop will be even better, but I like to maintain the current design to keep the concept of a castle first. Thanks for the useful feedback!

[ MOC ] The Grand Mall

Thanks to all! I guess I just made a really bad decision on the background when photographing the build, but anyway, here maybe a better view of it. I am not sure if I should open another thread about this, which is about my modular builds being exhibited at my mother school, the School of Architecture, CUHK, as part of the 25th anniversary. Maybe I will open a new topic on this!

It's okay. I guess it needs a little more luck for any cool projects besides the number of votes! :P Thanks for the words! Indeed, I think I will need to shoot it against another background. Stay tuned! Thanks for all the comments!

[ MOC ] The Grand Mall

Thanks for all the comments! I think it is quite interesting since it sparkles off different views on architecture. I intentionally use light colors for the new expansion, because any brighter / bolder colors will compete with the old building. It is wrong, to me, that you use something strong like brown or dark blue to make it too bulky. Using glass is not a bad idea, but I see more solid feel with actual walls. I still do some skylights though if you notice. Choosing a light color is not easy either. Light pink or red won't work, while light blue isn't too nice (too sad to me). The new light turquoise serves just right: bright, refreshing, sophisticated. I think I am good with this color scheme. Thanks again!

[ MOC ] The Winter Express

Hi everyone! A little while since I completed and posted my creations. Winter is here, and Christmas is coming, and I think it is time to do something for my winter village. Here is my first try on making a train MOC, and it is an interesting building journey. I have looked at different beautiful locomotive engines online and created my version with a little seasonal deco. I don't want this to be a funny, cartoon Christmas tree, but a formal and decent express train going between the city and the winter village. The engine is the part that took me most time to create. I had the basic form in my head, but the mechanism and details actually required quite some understanding of the actual old locomotives. Luckily, the green Emerald Train gave me much hint and so I ended up with this: I added some interesting details to the front bumper part, using the claw pieces. I also tried a "tilted bottle" arrangement for the chimney part. The engine probably runs on diesel as there is no coal section. The wagon car follows the engine, and that is how you get your presents at the winter village! Freshly delivered from the city center! The passenger car is a simple one with all you need: doors and windows, and a streamlined profile. It looks like it has warm air supply already for your long journey through the winter: The last car is a mail car. Of course, you need to deliver a lot of parcels and Christmas cards to the villagers from the city. So, have we arrived yet? Yes, this is it! Hope you guys like it! :D Have a merry Christmas! ;)

[ MOC ] The Winter Express

Thanks! The color scheme is a little tricky for the engine part, as I don't want to do the typical red or green scheme. I want to make it more metallic and "robust", while having a little Christmas deco. I am happy to see the current result. Definitely! I will tell the post office to do something, haha!
  19. This is the real Warbird, which I took me quite some effort. I spent quite some time researching on the net, and found quite some photos of the spaceship Rocket rode on, but most of them were concept art, not the final version. I also bought the book "GOTG: Art of the Movie", and it did have some useful images and sketches, but still the older version, which has two pairs of wings. I finally looked at the movie and got some shots of the final Warbird... And here it is, the final Warbird, which is part of the Ravager fleet. The wings are the hardest part since I really want to get the profile as close as the real thing possible. I am glad that it turns out great in the end. The back is also beautiful, with the twin engine jets. I also control its size by comparing its size to the Milano, taking the same ratio of the planes from the book and applying them to the Lego version. And you can also see I used some of the sticks from the Raccoon polybag. Perhaps to make it even closer to the real thing, the windshield will need some more special stickers, but I won't do that now, haha! Hope you all like it! :D

[ MOC ] Modern Fire Brigade

Hi everyone! I got this interesting idea of a fire station some time ago, and built this in two weeks, the fastest building I have done so far. I have no intention to get the now-expensive 10197 Fire Brigade, which doesn't really appeal to me. However, I am thinking, if I am to build a fire station, what design should it be? All fire stations have the distinctive feature of the big gates for fire trucks and the walls that separate them, no matter what the buildings look like. I took that idea, and thought about extending these bays to the second storey. At the same time, what if the interior walls grow so big that they grow outside of the facade walls? And so I turned the sketches into real thing. I choose dark red as it is less prominent than bright red, giving a more sophisticated color scheme for the city. Inside, you have everything a normal fire station would have: parking bays and equipment racks on the ground floor: Captain talking to the staff... On the second floor, there are pantry, resting room and toilet on the top. There is even a ping-pong table for the firemen! "Hey why are you two playing table tennis on the street, huh?" One of the play features here is the light. I put the red light brick at the corner and so when there is alarm, you can light it up and the firemen will be ready to go! I hope you like this modern building design, thanks!

[ MOC ] Modular Disney Store

Thanks :D For the Display logo, do you mean how I printed the graphics? Or the way to build that shape? I pasted the print of Disney logo done in Photoshop onto the brick, that is. Just white photo paper (and a little good craftsmanship) will be good. :)

[ MOC ] Modular Disney Store

Thanks everyone! Glad that you all enjoy it! Good ideas! Perhaps that will be done in the Disney Store Expansion project! Indeed, it is a pretty clean modern design, which I would like to be a little different from normal type of shops / Disney Stores :) thanks!

    [MOC] Bucket Wheel Excavator ER-1250

This is insanely detailed, functional and elegant! I am amazed by how much it resembles the real life thing! If this is a set, I will buy this definitely even that I am not a Technic guy!

    [ MOC ] Batpod UCS

Hi everyone, today here I am to show you my version of the Batpod. When 5004590 was released, everyone was thrilled and tried to replicate one on their own with their parts. However, 5004590 looks just strange when you compare it to the real one. I bought the book The Dark Knight Manual to understand the design more, and research on the Internet for a month, and finally I built a version that I think is closer to the real Batpod. The original Batpod is an escape pod from Batman's Tumbler, and the mechanism is based on the S-shaped axis. Each of the two wheels are connected to the body by one-sided arm only. 5004590 set does not do this while mine follows that design. The shape of the Batpod is also in a reverse V-shaped manner, without any horizontal element. The LEGO set did not do that at all, and my version tries to follow that original profile, with rear part elongated as well to match the proportion. Front view, which shows the asymmetrical design of the wheel axis. The front view has mounted 3 pairs of weapons, with headlights on the sides too. Middle part, which retains some of the details of the original 5004590 set. I like this part the most, which keeps the original design of the Batpod: mudguard between the two pedals. I tried to add some wiring to mimic the original, but it looks too busy and so I ditch it in the end. The whole exercise was started as an MOD, but with my design goals to rebuild the form in the most realistic way, I redid the entire chassis in the end. Looks like an MOC at last! Anyway, there is one technical issue that prevents the front wheel guns from holding permanently, but as a display model, this is perfect already. Thanks for watching!
