Hey fellow Corries, finally another ship for you. The Lydia, an outdated trading vessel, now sailed by three old marine veterans, outdated like herself. As one of them is a navigational expert, they want to create new nautical maps and collect data of star movements. I already have a class 2 ship in the race, so I want to ask, if this vessel with 28 studs length (without bowsprit) could count as a small class 3? Otherwise I will put her out of the race. Her stats: R M G C $ H 3 4 0 0 4 1 She is a fabric of fantasy and some inspiration taken from paintings and models. The rig is not finished a 100%, but enough to be photogenic I think. Important are the absent braces. I probably will remove the buntlines in the future. Also the sheets are not properly belayed. Greetings and good luck for the race! Wellesley

Always had the idea of using this part from the 6541 Intercoastal Seaport as railings. Maybe one day I will more or less accidentally build a ship with the right size and colour.

That's what my mom's kitchen had in stock:D The upper one has a perfect size, I'm only concerned about its age. Starts to being a bit crumbly. The lower ones are stretched to the max, will definately have to change them. I was searching my home the last days, but nearly don't have any rubber bands at all. Yep, that was my impression, too. Thanks for the idea with the extend deck, will try that out. Exactly. There seems to exist two kinds of them, some could easily be put over the hoses, some wouldn't even work with force. Using the connectors with a ball at one side, helps to prevent the connectors from sliding off and attaching the sail will make the whole construct firm. Otherwise you will have a problem at the transition points from one hose to another. Yeah, the flanges are great help to strain the "Reihleine", which I only know in German. Anyways, it is the rope, used to attach the sail to the yard. Won't take that compliment. But this one, thanks! -

@kurigan Lol, didn't know that. Nice one:P "The most geeelorious creaturevessel under the sun...queen of them all" I had to come up with a name real quick and remembered this one from Hornblower. Well, first you would like to look here: Nuisance I just used clips attached to this one at the bow and to two of these with three studs between them at the stern. The rest happened automatically, no need for further fixation. (Wow, just found out about these. I used to know all the bricks as a child, nowadays surely less than even the half) The size of the foresails is quite big in comparison to the lateen sails. Guess I saved my a** again with going for a fantasy rig. -

Hmm, more reasonable could be downgrading the Orion to class 1... -

Thanks for both the detailed answers. Indeed, Buntlines seem to be too much, especially for this size. Might keep them for now to create the illusion of clutter and complexity. Wouldn't they pull the leech inside (up) on one side, increasing the curvature and outside on the other, breaking the curvature? Yeah, but at first glance it didn't seem to be the case. I thought (looking at the flags), that the xebec in the centre would have the wind most aft. But I have to admit, the flags are not the best indicator. Assumed that the galley and the right xebec sail before the wind, wouldn't that make the sail on the foremast of the centre xebec too filled with wind? Besides that there is that typical twist from stern to hull, I see in many maritime paintings. The perspective upon the poop deck is different from the one upon the foredeck. That is what I probably will go for. Well, I keep that in mind, if ever I need a detailed opinion again:D That would be great! -

Yeah, even though the sail on the main mast of the ship on the left seems to be a bit odd, given the direction of the wind. But without any clue about lateen sails, I won't judge that:D -
Great mill!

That is indeed a neat little ship:) Have to look into the Historic Themes subforum more often:D

I was looking for a nice broad hull for a felucca and decided to copy the design of @kurigan's Nuisance. But it was too huge compared to my other vessels and I didn't want to start with a new scale. So I went for a lateen-rigged two mast ship. It is not a replica of an existing rig, it is a compromise of different inspirations. The masts and foresails are loosely based on this picture: In this case, the sails are split into two, making tacking easier. This picture was the main guidance for rigging the sails: And this is where my problem arised. I put the brail(7) and buntlines(8) only on one side of the sail, therefore they only work on one tack. I couldn't find pictures of lateen sail having them at both sides, it was hard, finding some with buntlines at all. Now my question is, if they usually had buntlines at each side, or if they just rehoisted the entire rig with every tack (which would be a possible solution with steady wind and a long course). Or if I better should rig one of the yards in the opposite direction, like seen here: Another possibility of tacking would be dipping the nose of the yard to then swing it around the mast. Again I would need to have a brail and the buntlines on the other side, but also the block of the tackle(3) would have to be behind the mast. Not like currently seen on this picture: A stylistic decision I have to make is, if I should change the colour of the wheels from brown to black, given that black already is the colour of the yards and the belaying pin rails. Any ideas or deeper knowledge about lateen rigs really is appreciated. -
Great ship. Nice hull, that will be a fast vessel. Only thing that looks odd, is the jib being bigger than the gaff. Maybe you could extend the gaff and the boom a bit and/or reduce the size of the jib or split it in two. Always unhappy that I'm not able to get a bigger version of your images:) There is a lot to see.

Thanks to all! Great to hear. Tell me, if you need more photos. -
Finally the last faction receives its gift. I had some of the black ninja glider wings and originally wanted to use those to build a Xebec. Then, searching for some pictures of jib booms, I came across this plan: Looked like a fine inspiration to me. I intend this to be a pilot or survey boat. She is called Orion and hopefully is a great addition to the Oleon fleet. I had so much luck with the bricks this time. Wasn't going to include any blue originally. But I had not enough red tiles, so I assumed that blue would provide me with the necessary pieces. That is where the railings originate from. Didn't even know, I had these four flexi tubes. And then even in the right length:) The only thing I had to give up was trying to slope the door a bit. On this scale I have just not found a solution for a smooth transition. Too many visible gaps beneath the roof and not enough space to fit some cover techniques. Greetings, Wellesley

[PA CUP - Cat B - Class 1] Orion
Wellesley replied to Wellesley's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Ah ok, thanks. I thought cargo would be...well, cargo. Not people. So actually it doesn't make much sense to give the Orion a stat point there. Ten people or the equivalent in trading goods would never fit into that little cabin. Maybe I should get another range or hull point instead. But I haven't seen many vessels with four or more range points around so far. So giving her a fifth, despite the fact that other ships have far more sail area, would be a bit absurd. -

Nice ship. Excellent shape, I like the upwards slope towards astern at the poop deck. Cool colourscheme and nice figurehead. Are these all official Lego sails? Great job! What I would consider is changing the yard beneath the bowsprit into a dolphin striker. Like here: But overall a lovely ship. -
Hello dear ship-builders, I wasn't active for a long time now. Some of you might remember me from building the "HMS Bulwark", a 74 gun third rate ship of the line. It was in March, when she got a new bow. I never really liked the old one, way too angular. Then I came across the quarter saucer base (30201) of the 1998 Stingray Stormer (6198-1). It perfectly fitted the desired shape. But now for my frigate, probably being named "HMS Argonaut". She will become a 38 gun fifth rate frigate. More pictures can be seen, following one of the flickr links. Supposed to be a sister ship to the Bulwark, I think about changing the white stripe back to yellow. What do you think? Also for similarity I will probably keep the windows on her stern. They may look to big, but I already tried smaller ones and have to say, I like the current ones better. I hope to progress faster than last time. It mostly depends on me willing to buy the needed bricks. As for the rig and last details, I already have the ideas. So far so good. I hope you all continue to have great joy reassembling bricks into sightworthy constructions! Wellesley.

Wellesley replied to Wellesley's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Bregir Thanks a lot, seems to be the proper type name. Well, licensed ships still can be seized, right?:D Now l have to license my other gifts, too. If anyone from Eslandola or the Sea Rats wants to license the Fishing Boat or the Pontoon Crane, just message me. It will then be available for your usage. Back to the Orion, this will be her stats: R M G C $ H 3 5 0 0 1 0 How much space does one cargo unit equal? -

Well, now it is official, she's in the race:) Will add stats and a storyline later, when I have a better overview. By the way, does anyone know how this ship class is called? Found the plan only by accident. -

@Bregir This is a plan from 1953. Seems indeed to be a fairly new invention. Here a few results from a quick search. I still don't know the exact terminology, would be nice, if someone could clarify the boom's name. And of course from the Pen Duick, which was the inspiration for this build: -

That jib boom might not be that common, but I have seen one often enough. It may have been developed after the time of the coalition wars, but BoBs has its own timeline and I love to see some variety of rigs.
