I like it. Very useful parts for MOCs, too. Very easy to install headlights on it. Too bad the alternate model is crap.
  4. LOTR tower of orthanc. I'll start this big boy this weekend
  5. That's a link to the plain old 9398!
  6. Where???? I go to shop.lego.com and can't find it anywhere!
  7. Yep. I had TONS of fun modding my Goblin King battle with hinges and technic bricks to connect all components! http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=80391&hl=79010

LOTR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion

I have purchased a few fantasy era sand green orcs and crown knights (the latter being quite cheap on bricklink). I have found that they are excellent substitutes for mordor or moria orcs and gondorian soldiers, respectively. I don't have a problem with mixing yellow minifigs with flesh tone minifigs at all, nor do I have a problem with the generic neck protector helmet - although they don't look like this in the videogame, it's the closest thing we got. For orc swords, Lego have used this mold for quite a while now. I'm curious now, are there any movie stills that show orcs actually using similar looking swords?
  9. I know the 8285 doesn't get much love around here (some reasons to hate it are valid;only early releases had silver parts), but I think it's a very good set and one of the rare examples of an outstanding alternate model that is just as good as the main, and uses most of its parts. Plus, the intructions to motorize it with 8287 are for the alternate model, not the main. I have to say though, I had lots of fun motorizing the main model with that same 8287 motor. Lots of space to place it in the upper middle of the truck!

LOTR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion

His blue outfit from that extended edition scene might not be the same as the blue outfit he wears on the gold pile, but Lego might not make the distinction. Look how Aragorn's sword is always the same. Speaking of Aragorn... I'm a purist so I won't get anything not produced by Lego. So what's the best Anduril we have at the moment? I'm opting for the first option for now. I own both, and the second one looks too futuristic in Aragorn's hands. Too bad none of them have a pointy tip, though. Also... I'm using the sand-green Orcs from the fantasy era Castle to supplement my Mordor (or Moria) orc armies. But they never came with shields of their own. What shield do you think fits them best? At the moment I have one of these and it looks barbarish enough, but doens't give off a very "Mordor-ish" vibe. EDIT: Nevermind that. They DO have shields.

LOTR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion

I received my order last week. I now own the entirety of the LOTR and Hobbit lines so far. With the exception of the hobbit board game, and blue Bilbo Baggins. But I'm not forking over $40 for a fig that is highly likely to appear in next winter's wave. It's tempting to get a second black gate set - but I have no intention of spending another $75 CDN on it. What's the best option for my 2nd one: 1) Waiting for a sale and buy it, then sell off the minifigs I don't want 2) Buying the gate only on bricklink (no figs, no instructions, no box... though I would like to keep the orcs) sometimes later I might keep my 2nd Mouth of Sauron and get a black head & hood, maybe a tattered cape (though those aren't cheap) and pretend he's my 3rd Nazgul.

Well, I couldn't decide either, so I placed it in a new section.
  14. I agree with most of the replies on this thread. The desire to build will inevitably come back. If it's not you, but your future wife who's forcing you to sell off your collection: DITCH the stupid bitch, and DON'T sell anything. If she loves you, she'll accept your hobby.

  16. I'm building Nico71's road grader moc. http://www.nico71.fr/road-grader/ Although he provides plenty of photos, there's one place where you can't hardly see anything: the inside of the front wheel steering assembly. What's the gray part buried in the middle, between the yellow 1 x 11 beam and the knob gear wheel? You can kinda see the underneath of it a little in this pic In that pic you can see the steering assembly in the middle, slightly to the left: You can somewhat see some of it sticking out here: It looks to me a 1 x 4 think beam with with Stud Connector... What do you guys make out of this?
  17. Thanks! I'm glad I posted this question. Now to rebuild this assembly...

Done! Fantastic MOC, by the way. That would be a good idea, but this one is strictly for LOTR. I'll leave that job to somebody else. If anyone is inclined to do so, feel free to use my original post as template.
  20. On the many topics, "LOTR 2012", "LOTR 2013", "Lotr Set Reviews" and "LOTR future sets" topics, people often point out how the line is meant for older kids, teens and adults. Do you personally know any kids, 12 year old and younger, who are into the theme? Do you know any that are into the Lego theme but have never seen the movies? Do you know any that have seen the movies and/or read the books, but have no interest in the Lego theme? I'm very curious to know.

Great MOC! But as other have said, it would look better with minifigs. Can you please place a variety of town minifigs in there and then take some more pics?
