  1. An example would be the 42009. The tires used on real Liebherr mobile cranes are the 445/95R25 series which measure 58.4 inches tall. Divided that by 24 and you get 2.4 inches; exactly the height of 32019.
  2. Actually, sets 42009, 8043 and 8265 are the same scale. The blue seats used in all three models are the same size and being the numbers geek that I am I figured out what the dimensions would be if scaled down from their real life counterparts. These three models(and possibly more, I just don't own them to find out) are 1:24 scale.
  3. Could someone please confirm the number of spare parts left over? Is the list on Bricklink correct? I seem to have an extra gray bushing as well as an extra frictionless gray pin. Also, I only have five extra black pins instead of ten.
  4. I just finished building my 42009 and it is even better than expected. The size alone is jaw-dropping and this thing is easily the largest set in my collection. It almost makes the Unimog look small. The entire build process was enjoyable and nothing ever felt repetitive or boring. Overall the model looks great but of course there are little changes here and there I'd like to make over time. The Ultimate 42009 would be incredible but I don't $200+ to spend of PF accessories right now. I'll save that for a future rebuild. The first change was that I added two panels inside the engine bay to smarten it up a bit. I don't know why designer Markus Kossman left this area so open but perhaps it was due to cost restrictions. The second change was small but important to me and that was to give the crane dual headlights(two clear per side). The Liebherr 1100-5.2 that this set is based on has a six-light arrangement and the previous 8421 crane does as well.

    8070 Spider

The rechargeable PF box looks nice but...$100! Maybe I'll just convert my 8070 to use manual functions instead. The roof folds directly behind the seats as one section like a Ferrari SuperAmerica, but it rotates on two different attachment points to stop it from flopping about. I tried various designs that folded up but it was just too complicated and took up too much space.

    8070 Spider

I decided to upgrade my 8070 to a V10 and before I did, I tried to work out the design in the Lego Digital Designer program. This being my first go with it everything was confusing but I think my years of Photoshop use proved helpful. The biggest issue with fitting a V10 into the engine bay was the "strut bar" which is in the way of the two extra cylinders. Removing this beam causes the entire front end to become weak and very unstable so I fitted two smaller 7 length beams in between and these also support the front side of the engine itself. I also used two t-beams plus a 3 length beam to add more support and as a bonus they resemble an air intake. If anyone else had put a V10 in their 8070 I'd really like to see your solutions as mine is probably a lot more complex than it needs to be.

    Help with your MOC

Excellent idea for a topic! I need help with my MOC but sadly it would take an entire novels worth of advice! I'd like to build my first Technic supercar with the parts from both 8070 and 42000 but I have no idea where to even begin. There are some excellent modular ideas out there but when it comes to adding a gearbox my mind goes blank. Nothing too crazy either, something like a 5+R transmission and rear wheel drive in a rear engine platform similar to the Porsche 918 or McLaren P1. The Aventador by Francisco Hartley would be my dream supercar build in terms of chassis and suspension but my fear is that I'll only get as far as the chassis and get stuck because of a lack of experience. I'm also pretty terrible at reverse engineering.

    Ultimate 42009 RC-Mobile Crane

Jurgen, I noticed a few differences between the BrickStore file and the new images for just the additional parts: 62462 yellow pin connector, 2x or 3x? 42610 wheel 11x8mm 5x, not on new images

    8420 Street Bike

I recently added one of my all-time favorite Technic sets ever, the 8420 Street Bike. The 8420 features many unique parts such as the rims and staggered width tires, printed windscreen, brake discs and rear shock. The overall look is that of an Italian superbike and the designers were obviously influenced by the Ducati 999 but also the Gilera CX as seen by the front and rear single sided wheel mounts. I added panels to the gas tank area to fill it in and a gas cap on top. I would do a full review but there is no way I could match the already excellent write-up by Starstreak found here. Having bought this set used I was curious if the set came with the rubber tires already on the rims in the box? I noticed the tires on my set are opposite of each other, with the tread pattern in different directions. It seems like a lot of 8420's have this same issue since many photos show the same thing.

    8420 Street Bike

I would make a mixture of Retr0Bright gel and apply it to the rims. Don't let it set on there for more than a few hours though, and it might also be a good idea to put painters tape around the edges to mask off the rubber tires.

Search for 42009 on YouTube and you'll find a video of the B model. It has been made into a full RC it looks like.

The one Technic Set you wish you had gotten

I owned 8466 for a few days way back when before returning it due incorrect pieces in the box. I'd like to get another one someday. 8285, 8458, 8461, 8674 and 8421 are all sets I would love in my collection.
  18. I agree! I would like to see some orange used and maybe even a nice gray.

42009 Super Structure Mods - Cleaner Look

Agreed, the one set that battery box actually fits in with is the 42009 because of the counterweights. I'm definitely going to try filling mine in once I get it built, but I'm going to need to order some parts through Bricklink since I don't have any yellow left.

Merman, is your set the NA version or EU? The box without part count would be EU.

I wonder if I should go ahead and preorder the 42009 through the eBay seller for $199. Seems like a decent price and he has free shipping.
