To open or not to open...
Rikus posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Just wanted to share my Hamlet doubts with someone that could understand them... at least better than my wife! Some days ago, I happen to find a brand new and sealed (box just has minor shelf wear) 8475 RC Buggy and payed it less than a used one! I know the set is almost impossible to find as MISB (no BL shop own it and only one is listed on ebay, ATM) and the only reference price I found is over 4 times what I paid for it... so... now, I really don't know how to behave! By selling it I'd probably earn enough to buy a good used one... recovering the costs of the last (many) sets I bought, too... ...but I'm really tempted to open the box and enjoy the set as brand new... and to use RC parts for my MOCs...! What to do, now?!? To open or not no open... That is the question...! -

I'm sorry... He had only one 8475 and one 8366, both MISB... But he sold them in few hours! -

Thanks guys for your "moral support"...! I agree with many of you: Lego is meant to be played with! ...and if I've been lucky enough to find a brand new set of RC motors (and servo, and remote!)... I'm obliged to build some MOCs with them! (I'm already dreaming about a 4x4 with 8466 tires... no other PF motor is powerful enough to reach good performances with that monster tires!) I'll keep it and open it! Unfortunately , tomorrow I'll have to leave for 4 days with my family, so I'll have to wait for a few days more before enjoying my 12 years "jump in the past"! I'll take some "unboxing" pictures and will post here for you... -

That's a really crazy option! It reminds me people that buy the new iPhone6 just to shoot or chop it to post the video on the web!!! -
SBrick General Discussion
Rikus replied to Nofer89's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The fastest and (probably) easiest way to use a gamepad to control SBrick functions should be to enable MFi controllers compatibility within the app! In this way people should be able to connect an external MFi controller to the iPhone/iPad, using the iDevice as a bridge between the controller itself and the SBrick(s). I think both Bluetooth MFi Gamepad (like Steelseries Stratus) and Gamepad-covers (like Logitech Powershell) should work well, should the app integrate their support (MFi API are included in iOS SDK). Using the first solutions, you should be able to keep the phone in your pocket, too!- 761 replies

Pnemuatic/Adjustable Suspension?
Rikus replied to __________________________'s topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hi, I already made many experiments with pneumatic cylinders used as suspension system, in the past. Basically, you have to completely replace normal springs with pneumatic cylinders; by adding or removing pressure to cylinders, you can rise/lower your vehicle (it is the same technique used by Citroen hydropneumatic suspension system). By using pneumatic cylinders in combination with soft springs, on heavier models, with the same method, you can make suspension system softer/harder. For a small model like the T1, I think you could try to use 4 small cylinders, one for each wheel, moved with a pushrod system to use lesser space and/or to multiply leverage to have shorter/longer wheel movement. Every small cylinder is capable of lifting over 1kg weight, so they will be enough for sure. They could easily be actuated by a compact pneumatic autovalve, like .I suggest to link only one tube to lower chamber of pneumatic cylinders, so you'll act only adding/removing pressure on that chamber, that will allow a slower lowering of the suspension system (should you connect both tubes, by inverting the pneumatic switch you'll have the model lower itself too abruptly). Hope this will help, somehow.- 14 replies

Large Technic Sets
Rikus replied to Phantom59's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's true! I've got my Ferrari F1 exposed on shelf, at the moment, together with the 42000... To find room for them I had to dismount four other big sets (8043, 8275, 8265 and 42006)! The Ferrari is 62cm long and 30cm wide -

That's true... I remember, when I dismounted my 8466, I had to build myself a small tool (mad of 2 pin/axle in a lift arm) to separate the two pieces! Here are the two "illegal" steps: -
Flagships 2000-2012
Rikus replied to SheepEater's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm so lucky I own quite all of them... I only miss 8436, 8421 and (unfortunately) 8258 (I'm always looking for a good priced, used, one). My votes goes to: 8455 - Really compact, but one of most complete and plenty of function models ever... And, by far, the apex of pneumatic Technic sets 8285 - I didn't fully understand why it's considered one of the best sets ever... Until I built it...! It's really big, extremely sturdy, with a lot of manual operated functions and many different ways to operate them and, most of all, it has a very complete and realistic look (it's a really good set to display) 8275 - It's PF revolution, although it has few functions an no gearbox, it's really huge, heavy and with a nice mix of studded and studless parts that give a nice look 8043 - It's the set that brought me out of my "dark ages"... A real dream for every engineer: a remote controlled excavator build out of lego! Excellent and very complex gearbox that allow 6 PF functions out of 4 motors. I just don't understand why 8461 Williams F1 is listed... It's a Racers set (not Technic) AND it's basically a re-release of 8458 Silver Champion, with new panels and different color scheme... 8431 should have been more appropriate for 2002 (worst year ever for Technic sets)... It's a re-release as well, but, at least it is a Techinic set and it's different from the others listed. Just my 2 cts. -
Sarcasm related to LEGO Technic

- I'll buy only one set at this shop on BL - Ok, this time for real... I'll buy only the 2 pieces I miss on BL... - (To my wife) I swear, I bought only one set... The shop owner gave me all of the other 4 for only few cents...! - (To my wife, just after the parcel man ringed at my door for the third day in a row) ...no, it's not another Technic set for me... They are documents for my job! - (To my wife, while writing on the forum... Or while contacting a BL shop) ...I'm just writing to my brother (colleague, cousin, ...)! -

Which set brought you out of your 'dark' age?
Rikus replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I started building when I was 4, in 1974, beginning with very basic "house" sets. At the age of 7 I started building Technic (853, then 8860, and so on), 'till I was 15-16... One of my last sets was the 8851, Pneumatic Excavator.... Finally I come out of my dark age on Christmas 2011, at the age of 41 (after about 25 years), buying the 8043 Motorized Excavator! -

Imagine the faces of the other guys when someone go to a real uphill race or to an off-road competition with that car! :) The Panda 4x4 is a real climber, the offroad performance are so good that also the Italian Forest Service is using it! I would definitely be interested! -
Review - 41999 4x4 Crawler Exclusive Edition
Rikus replied to rm8's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes. At 8:30am CET, on Lego Shop, the set was already showing "Out of stock" status, but the "Add to bag" button was (as it is now) still working and I gave it a try... I received an email, yesterday morning, telling the set was in "backorder" status, so I was losing hope... But suddenly, today, the set went to "in process" status, then I received the "shipped" email just few minutes ago! I'm really happy! -

I confirm: orders made yesterday morning (mine was done at about 8:30 am CET), are shipping now! :) :) I just received the confirmation email with tracking number for the package! At least, the set wasn't sold out even if the shop was showing "unavailable"! Looking forward to receive my box... Unfortunately, I'll see it only on August 11th, since I'm leaving for holiday tomorrow morning! :( -

If I understand well, there will not be any "non - Esclusive" versions. Maybe they are planning to increase the extend the "limited edition" over the planned 20.000 pieces. -

I ordered 2 at about 8:00 a.m. CET. At the time I made the order, the shop was already showing "Out of stock" and, after few hours, I received an email saying the set was in "backorder status". Yesterday, in the afternoon, I checked the status: the free mini-mech was in "In Process" status, while the crawler was in "Backordered" status. ...surprisingly, this morning the crawler status changed to "In Process", so I hope there will be some chances I'll receive my sets! Crossing all possible fingers! -
The Unofficial LEGO ® Technic Builder’s Guide by Sariel available f
Rikus replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A small update 'bout my missing link for the eBook version bought on NoStarch... Soon after contacting them by email, I was answered by NoStarch: it seems there was a server failure while processing my order automatically and the link to files was never activated... They gave me access to the files manually, so I'm now a proud owner of the wonderful Sariel's book! From a quick preview, I can say there's plenty of good advices, both for medium and for advanced Technic builders... Thank you for sharing them, Sariel! -

I received three as well... but they where one for order confirmation one with accont details and a last one, again with account details but with a blank name (probably a server mistake...). No download link in the emails and no download links in my "download" section on the site...
