I was a little disturbed by you being able to find some reference to "spanker mast" so I took another look around. It seems that on American Schooners (after about 1900) the aft most mast was referred to as the "spanker mast". What would normally be called the mizzen mast. The reason being that at this time schooners were being built with 4,5, and 6 masts (one even had 7 ). Since the spanker was attached to the aft-most mast and they needed a name, they just called it the spanker mast.

    - I think they look great! With the ship I'm currently working on I was planning to use . However, I think what you have here is far superior. I was somewhat disconcerted at the knowledge the lines would just be clumped together at the top or bottom of the bushing. So thanks for sharing your work and giving me a better idea. [However, looking at your pictures the shrouds/back-stays should be farther aft. You have them mounted to the 10 stud length of section there; I'd say move back to far rear of the section and you'll be golden.) I wanted to offer some thoughts on your first post about what isn't quite right about her overall look. What the Admiral said about the bowsprit and hull proportions are what first popped out to me as the biggest thing. Comparing them a second time I noticed that the mast in the reference photo is canted. So I think you need to angle the main mast to the aft like 10 degrees or so.

I still wasn't sure what I was looking for after following your link. However, since I have another name to go with, I took a look around. I finally know what you're talking about. Yes, I've never seen let alone heard of this mast on a British frigate. It does remind me of a reference from one of the Aubrey/Maturin novels where Jack rigs up a false mast (using a large piece of rope) on his ship as a ruse de guerre. However, I believe he was on a brig at the time. I'll have a look and see if I can't find it. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ahah! I found it! In English it's called the "Horse" and holds the "Trysail." It was only native to the Snow (so far as I can tell). (The ship is named a Snow (or Snaw) because of this "mast" it would seem. The Dutch name seems to be much more indicative here, so I'm inclined to believe it was a dutch term originally that came over into English and defined the ship's type because of it's uniqueness.) So the answer to your question again is: "No, a British frigate did not have a horse or snauwmast. It did have a spanker, but it was connected directly to the mizzen-mast."

This will leave a stud sticking out the back. I'd use it to mount on, and stick a cannon ram-rod or swab in, if you can't find a better use.. or a different technique all together.

Was looking back over the pictures... are those coconuts in the trees?! Nice touch. Never seen that before; love it!

I don't think they have an inverted arch small enough to work but that doesn't mean you can't invert one yourself.

Questions about the Islanders and building ideas

Anyone have an idea when the new series will be released? I'd like to get a hold of the scottish bagpiper for use as and with a Napoleonic Highlander unit.

The deck is the main-deck or weather deck... that open, central part is the waist. By "brig" I assume you're referring to the area used to secure prisoners? (Brig is a more modern, U.S. term, but I don't guess it really matters)

Whilst the bow doesn't look quite like what I'm used to in a LEGO ship, I think the direction you've progressed is a marked improvement. Again with the well deck!! Had a discussion not too long ago about this name. Check this thread if you're bored.

A nice ship for your first, but there are some historical inaccuracies with her. The masts are all too close together. The foremast looks fine, but the mainmast should be about where the mizzen mast is, and the mizzen should be back by the quarterdeck. Speaking of the quarterdeck, it looks a little tall.

Do a search for part number 73983 or "hinge plate" Oh okay. I didn't realize you were making something so old. Based on that model; I'd say, "Yes, a little forward wouldn't go amiss." I look forward to seeing how you make the figurehead. I can't imagine a unicorn to be very easy.

Thanks for the picture. Now take this with a grain of salt, but based on a generalized plan of frigates it actually needs to come aft just a bit. Typically speaking the fore mast lay betwixt the second and third gunports. (Again be hesitant using the gun-ports as a measurement marker, as the number of guns can have an effect on this) Is there a particular ship you're basing yours on? Or at least, do you know how many guns you plan to afford to the gun-deck? This would help a lot.

Yes, I did. But I think the resemblance still holds true.

You're going to have to show me a picture of what you're talking about. Every picture I see of her has only the three normal masts (Fore-, Main-, and Mizzen-) there's no fourth. The picture I have in my previous post shows the spanker and how it is mounted. If that's not clear or what you're referring to, I'll need a reference to something.

I'd really like a picture side-on to really be able to say if the foremast is too far one way or the other.

From my knowledge there's no such thing as a "spanker mast". There is a "spanker." That being the fore-and-aft gaff-rigged sail from the Mizzen Mast (in the case of a frigate). The "spanker sail" attaches to the "spanker boom" (the lower beam) and "spanker gaff" (the upper beam) not "mast." I'll try to find a picture to upload in the case it's unclear here. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Got a picture for you: P.S. The Spanker is sometimes called the Driver

Questions about the Islanders and building ideas

I'm hesitant to get too in-depth with arguments here for I fear it takes us too far afield of the post's intent. However, I feel that while the Islanders are without a doubt a blend of several cultures all mentioned here, had they to be attached to a single one, more than any other it would unequivocally be that of the Hawaiian Islands at the time of their discovery. Even King Kahuka's name bears witness to this. (Kahuka being a town in Hawaii, about an 1.5 hour's drive from Honolulu.)

Questions about the Islanders and building ideas

But having been in contact with pirates and the Imperial Armada these 20 years past, surely they could have something a bit more advanced than a canoe?

Questions about the Islanders and building ideas

I've seen several references to the Islanders being natives of South America (Mayans, Aztecs, etc.). This is incorrect as I see it. My impressions have always been that they are a loose representation of the Polynesian Islands of the Pacific. They very much maintain this in look and style.

Questions about the Islanders and building ideas

Well I don't know of any kind of official LEGO canon regarding them, but had I to guess I would say the answers are: No. No. No. Tribesmen. Canoes. However, seeing how they are constantly fighting with the pirates they would have come into contact and therefore had access to pigs, goats, rowboats, and horses. So I think they could justifiably be built into a scene.

I'm with Sebeus on this one. The bow looks a little rough in this picture.

Ummm I don't know. I guess it depends on the time period you're talking. Late in the war she was definitely a little on the small size, but when she was built I think it's fair to call her typical. I think you are more referring to the fact that she was a French capture and therefore not even British? 'Tis true, but I don't think there's anything wrong with using her as a basis, when I don't have much information to really narrow down the choices of schematics. You are right though, I probably shouldn't have used the word "typical".

    Lost Glory

I have no doubt this is an innocent mistranslation coming from Nederlands into English, but "I would like to see more of you" says that you want to get together with Sebeus for a little one-on-one time, if you know what I mean. I think what you were going for here was, "I would like to see more from you." Off topic I know, but just wanted to point it out. I hate it when I get something wrong in a foreign language.

I would say have a look at the cannon index. I should think you could get a good idea of where to start if not find something that suits your needs precisely.
