    Road Repair Crew

Hi, PaulC. I really like all of the details you've crammed in to this - the lorry is really good. Have you thought about adding one of those stripey tent things and some black, flat tiles to make a hole in the road? A good addition to any city layout, thanks for sharing it.

    Cupboard street

I used a combination of the 7744 police station, the 7793 service station and 4996 beach house. That's about all of my modern Lego, the rest is made up form all the stuff from the 70's / 80's including this police station! (the bits my dog didn't eat, anyway!). @Basiliscus.. god idea with the roof - I'll give it a try.

House B-RV-1A; Estate Office B-OV-6B; Vehicle V-LV-29A Hello, all. I thought you may be interested in my small scale setup. Due to lack of space and bricks I have confined my creations to some shelves. Top is technic, then there’s SW and my town below. The town buildings were initially built as a backdrop to display some vehicles but it grew to take over a bit! The yellow building is a house and has a weird roof so that it fits in the space! The green building is an estate agents office, with the white plates representing the photo’s in the window (I can’t be arsed with stickers!!) The 2 are separated with an alley for the bins and a fire escape from the green office. Both the buildings have interiors, featuring a toilet (lifted straight from the new police station – as were the water cooler and coffee machine). I’m not too happy with the stairs or t.v. but it has got a kitchen. The office has meeting areas on the ground floor with further office space above. I’ve no idea why I put a hovercraft on the roof but I like it!! Here are the vehicles on their own. Having taken the pictures I have built a further building, a bank to go alongside the green one however, I’m not too happy with it as I’ve run out of windows and used the clear plates from the garage / police station roofs. All in all I’m pleased with the result but it’s major flaw is that I don’t have enough space to display the vehicles so it cant be used as intended. I’m most pleased with the green estate agents, it used up all of my green bricks which is why it has grey sides. There are a few changes lined up as I really want to build a row of Victorian houses. This will have to wait until I’ve got the tan house, though. I would be interested to hear your comments as well as anyone else’s experiences in building in smaller areas. I hope you enjoy the pictures, my brickshelf is here: my brickshelf (This is my first go at this so I'll try and rectify any mistakes. - I'm having trouble getting pictures to appear and have used links insted. When I follow the tutorial and 'insert image' I am told 'dynamic pages are not allowed in img tags' when linking to my brickshelf folder images. I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks). EDIT reread tutorial!

    Modular Train Station

That looks really good, Dr Brick. I like the way you've made the roof in particular -The rails were a great way to get a curved roof. Have you modeled it on any particular (real life) location? - It reminds me of St Pancras in London but I'd imagine you've many a Northern European example to use!. Just out of interest - the module looks quite heavy, does the €846,51 include postage?

I think it's the 'tash that makes it so south american - the chap in the centre of the first construction picture looks truly hispanic - good job!. I know what you mean about the food - I've got 11 chilli plants on my window cills waiting for a bit of sun. It's interesting about the way you select the point of view for the photographs. Taking the pictures can sometimes be more enjoyable than construction! Being able to fill the frame with model makes a huge difference to the pictures - I've recently taken some (with limited results), and found the ones where the whole frame is filled to be a lot better - especially those taken from a minifig POV (which I've calculated to be my camera balanced on an ipod!!). This also has the advantage of stopping people posting comments about your carpet or being caught in a reflection 'with your trousers down', like master yoda in another thread

Thanks for your comments, everyone. sinner: I've had to move the atm as you were standing in the middle of a busy road to use it!!. I moved it to the front of a further building but it looks a bit out of place. I think (as it's so small), that it should be on the back or side as one of those 'secret' things that you find on a moc.... something thats not immediately obvious but you find it on second look. Thanks, legotrainfan - I've been rebuilding the yellow and black building today as I wanted in to be in the middle of the street (which meant I needed to build a side wall on it). It has proved to be a problem, though!! Having seen your thread basilliscus, I've been rebuilding today to try and use some of your camera techniques. The position of the street means that it can only be seen from one place, allowing me to maybe move it up a shelf and arrange it so your eye is drawn to specific positions - similar to your 'red carpet' photograph. You're right about the vehicle size, freddie - It's a place where the 4 stud wide cars would be best but I really enjoy building the SNOT front parts of the 6 wide ones!.

Cheers iamded. That's where the bloke in my avatar lives!....He's paranoid about zombie attacks and is getting himself prepared The roof terrace would be a perfect place for a sniper, he could sit on his garden furniture and eat his barbiqued chicken leg t he same time!!. The blue van turned out o.k. in the end, i just wish i had some decent doors to put on the back, like the ones on the ambulance.

Hello, basiliscus. I really like the theme you've chosen... the 'el presidente' dictator character is great. I can see how you feel the camera tecnique is limiting (as you're staging photographs like a director) but the overall effect is excellent. Do you position the camera early on in the build and then construct around it or simply find the best position after construction?

Thanks for that, Matn. I'm quite pleased with the land rover, even though it is a bit cartoonish.... It only just fits in the garage!
  10. Hi, Batbrick. Another quandary to test our morals!. I read this at work and had to think about it this afternoon!!! On first impressions, I had my heart saying "go back for your friends" and my head saying "ditch 'em and head East"...and I went with my head until I decided I couldn't leave Sammy!!!. I've got a feeling that Lord Dragonator has a pet dragon which may try to stop the escape but I think it best to go back for your friends then go East. The tribe to the East may be no better than Lord Dragonator in the end so you're best facing them with your mates! If we get the chance we should kidnap the penguin and hold him to ransom too! So in the end I went for go West. Oh and I went for wheels for a pegleg as I want to see how you'd build it >:-) On another note, it's another great build with the chains and details. I really like the Weezlet.. it looks like it has little socks on, aah!!

    MOC: Green Door Tavern

That's a great looking pub, I can almost hear the piped celtic music from here! I really like the sky light roof detail... I've recently visited a property with a similar arrangement and yours looks spot on... well observed!!. I suppose the only problem is that you are now forced to put your stairwell under it, right in the middle of the arm access. Being in Chicago, have you thought about putting in a contemporary style elevator to any of your buildings? That'll look really good..... and be fun to build. P.S. I hear it's happy hour in the green door tavern, and it's your round!!!
  12. That was exciting... 2 deaths, a mauling and a legless hero, just like a t.v. soap! It serves them right for taking the 'obvious' route in search of the tank. I think our future lies with using the animals so I vote for taking Sammy on a walk through the saltflats, looking for other survivors. (Maybe a cyborg, if we're lucky!!!). It may be possible to find a way of befriending the black dragon and becoming an ally... like finding an injured one and helping or similar. That'll please dragonlover dargonator!!!! I think we're a bit 'short on legs' ;-) for following the swarm and vehicles eat fuel, so we should go for using transport that uses the same fuel as us, so we can share. While we're at it, Reginald has got to be told he's on his deathbed, at least he'll have some warning as to his fate. As an alternative, the queen drones could be crushed up, distilled and made in to a delicious alcoholic drink (drone pilsner). A sun lounger could be built and you could watch your automated base destroy the swarm on t.v.!! (while you run out of food and your liver is destroyed!!). Well done Batbrick, another well crafted episode.

    My EB Neighbourhood Contest Entry

Thats a really clever twist on the house idea, Oki. I like the little bay windows on the sides of the houseboat, it makes it look like a victorian cottage. Good work *y* EDIT:name correction..duh!

    Brainbox's house

Thats great, Brainbox... your attention to detail is only surpassed by your comedy comments!!! (apparently people work full time as hand models, ever thought of a career change, if you're not already one!!) I love the loft ladder and the hook device, as well as the notice board. Perhaps you could use a life ring / bog seat for the toilet (as featured in this years advent calendar, if you have it). I'm looking forward to voting on these as they're all looking really good.

    Google Used lego!

Thats really interesting. I reckon the Google boys must have been Lego fans when younger, which is why they got the Google banner changed to the Lego design on the 50th birthday. It was probably the date of a number of 'banner-changing-worthy' worldwide events but they chose Lego!! Good on them, Lego fans on *y*
  16. Wow, Batbrick, that looks brilliant!! I love the way you've used creatures as transport & weaponry, It'll be really handy for the group to get a friendly Black dragon (if there is such a beast!). Are you planning on anything that tunnels? - I'm thinking like in 'tremors' rather than a machine. - It would be fun to make and you could concentrate on the head and leave the body underground to give it a really nasty attack. The arch looks really good especially with all the detail and booty, it's real 'end-of-the-world' stuff!. This update really cheered me up at lunchtime...I was trying to describe this story to a friend the other day but thought it was a film I had seen after too much wine. Anyway, reading this reminded me where I'd seen it and I yelled out 'Lego not film' in front of the whole office (to quizzical looks!!) I'm looking forward to reading further, I hope that imagination of yours is feeling strong!

    Hello, Everyone!

Hello, Everyone. My name is Gary or xzanfr as on here. I'm 33 and I've just acknowledged my designation as an AFOL (it's a little bit like an A.A. meeting!) I, like my fellow new member Flossie, was an avid collector of the 'old' castle LEGO but I'm now working on a working, technic model of a Landrover series 3 (going well) and a rollercoaster (going dangerously wrong!). I've been reading the comments you have all left for some time now but there's too many things that I want to comment on so I've made the leap to being active. I was spurned on to join following the find of my LEGO club certificate from 1981 / 1982 in a recent move... (perhaps my first new topic?) I look forward to 'talking' with you all in the future. G

    Ideas for new City sets

Sorry for the confusion, Klaus-Dieter. It means that I agree with you and can see things from you point of view. Thats my poor english (and I live here!!) If a serious attempt was made to produce offices and shops etc (like a shopping street) then I would like to see new baseplates with printed pavements and perhaps a raised kerb. It would also be useful if they were wide enough to accommodate the 6 and 8 wide trucks that they sell. The clear sections on the garage in the town plan make great display windows for shops. Especially with the curved pieces leading in to the doorway like a jewelers shop. (And you could display your gold bricks in the window!!)

    Your Ideas

I'd be interested in a zoo type theme as mentioned earlier in this thread. It would be possible to combine many of the themes mentioned before in a theme park way. (I'm thinking mainly of the underwater and zoo ones). You could also sell the shops / stalls and benches etc and combine many of the city and theme elements to create scenery with possibly a railway running around. Both large and small rides could be included such as bumper cars and merry-go-rounds along with possibly, a log flume or a rollercoaster. If combined you could create a diverse theme park incorporating a safari park (Lego land rovers *y* !) with some rides and shops. (Ironically like Windsor safari park... the place that was bulldozed to create Legoland Windsor!!!)

    Ideas for new City sets

One of them lives in my brothers loft in a box!!. The track is awful and it's so weak you can't use it with the window open due to drafts!! I have faith the the Lego designers have been trying this idea for at least 30 years! I can imagine the Lego design pixies in white coats with brick marked faces coming out of a lab simply saying "no"!! Forgot to say that the supermarket shown earlier is perfect for a city, just the sort of thing needed to show real life. A supermarket trolley would be a great addition.

    Ideas for new City sets

I know what you mean, Dr Brick. The traditional type that proper flex! (the best ones to ride!!). There are a couple of them that are successful (and famous) produced in Lego. I understand that they suffer a bit with reliability and keep needing to be squeezed back together, which is something Lego would frown upon in a product. Can you imagine the calls to the helpdesk?! The reason you need a bit of speed is the amount of friction between the wheels and track. This is applicable to both types and would slow the vehicle down enormously coming out of the loop to the extent that you would need very big, banked curves and downhill straights just to get it back to the station. (with little or no humps and bumps on the return unless an undertrack motor could push it along). It'll be great to have, though. Imagine buying

    Ideas for new City sets

I can see where you're coming from, Klaus; Your idea as to the floor plan size seems right and, perhaps, the offices could be stackable wit a spiral staircase to reduce space. There is a real need for a doctors surgery or dentist type building to link in with the hospital, also. TLC already have all of the moulds for the specialist equipment like the beds etc. A town hall with actual offices in would fit in well to many peoples cities as the town hall in the town plan set only seems to have a reception. (I'm thinking of a planning department who refuse to allow permission for all your MOC buildings!. Imagine having to apply in writing then waiting 3 months for them to say NO! <bad day at work!!>) With regards to the theme park, Dr Brick, I always thought the powered launch rollercoasters from RCT2 worked well in a small space. I think people would be interested in a rollercoaster pack idea to build 'woodies' for their park but a short powered launch would give more 'bang for your buck'. (i/e it would use far less pieces and still have a feature such as a loop or corkscrew to entertain). I've built a working Lego powered launch mechanism, initially designed to use magnets but I used a set of powered rollers so that I could test the track and see what sort of speeds were necessary to get up a lift hill / loop. Having done this, I think the following is the biggest problem to overcome: BIG BROTHER "Look at my new Lego rollercoaster" LITTLE BROTHER "cool, can I play?" BB "Yes. Put your head on the track to hear it coming" LB "O.K." BB [/i]presses launch LB Goes to school with Lego pieces embedded in his face like the villan from James Bond! Rather than big 'feature' rides (like rollercoasters sold as stand alone toys), I was thinking of pathway base plates with smaller rides like bumpercars and merry go rounds along with the shops. They could even do a 'seat pack' or similar with bins and town plan style benches. Whilst on the subject, what about a zoo with animals and a safari section etc. I understand that zoo tycoon was popular with girls and that is a market that Lego really need to crack. I don't think Belleview is very popular (I may be wrong) and the regular Lego themes seem to be bought by only boys or exceptional girls!!
  23. xzanfr

    Ideas for new City sets

An office line would be great, as would shops but I feel the size and scale would be a problem. As mentioned by AgentRick57, they would have to be in the 'market street' size which would not be too good for huge skyscrapers but would really suit a dentist, florist etc. Perhaps TLC could license a computer game like the sims which appeals to both boys and girls. As a dream, I'd like to see a rollercoaster tycoon type set up with rides, shops and scenery available to buy separately. Again the problem of scale comes in to it as a minifig big wheel would be HUGE!! There must be a lot of retail potential in anything that is modular and that, ultimately, is what it's all about!
  24. The magnets are set a little forward of the holes in the legs and the figures still connect correctly with a brick. I've got a Boba Fett who has a magnetic plate behind his back pack as well as on the legs. (The legs don't touch the 'fridge as his backpack is quite thick). Just a thought, but if you get a set of magnetic bricks from s@h then you can attach whatever you want to them. They're quite strong and I've had even a small car stuck to my 'fridge. (the magnets are in the 'tubes' on the 2x4x1 magnetic bricks).
  25. Yes! It's an interesting thread to read if you have time.
