  1. I can assure you I am strange like all of you, but my love of the Joshua Tree stems only as far as I think they are cool, and my favorite band, U2, do indeed have an album named after them, which I think is one of the best albums of all time.

But I could make up some very interesting story if you like!

    (Oh wait, no I can't... I'm too lazy :( )

  2. Review of Set 7214 : SEA PLANE

    7214001.jpg

    General view.

    7214006.jpg

A top-ish view, as you can see, it uses the classic Town "Cargo" logo.

    7214005.jpg

    Front view

    7214004.jpg

Side View. I like the use of the little windows, even though there is nothing really to them but to give the illusion of a larger cabin. It is a nice effect.

    7214003.jpg

    Rear view.

    7214007.jpg

This is where the strange design of the plane comes in... the engines are not put on secure.. and thus the engines can rotate... and make it alot like a VTOL aircraft... except the propellers are way too small to provide lift in this way... I will be putting a few pieces on the aircraft to stop it from this.

    7214009.jpg

Another strange aspect of the plane... as I if you push the pontoons, they rotate like this... this along with the Rotating engines can make this plane look like a transformer lol, from a cargo plane to an attack "helicopter"... This rotation results from the funny construction that is very different for airplanes in the lego universe... not sure why they did this...

    7214014.jpg

If you remove the wings and a small arch, you can see this inside... I still am not sure the purpose of this... if someone can explain why Lego did this than let me know, because it puzzles me. This elastic keeps the pontoons from rotating freely.

    7214011.jpg

This is the cargo hold... Red and Yellow Suitcases with flat 1x1 panels as 'cargo' in them... and a grey backpack. Its neat.

    7214010.jpg

The ultrarare Dark Blue Pilot Minifig... I believe he is only in 2 sets... this one and another World City promotional airliner. The icing on this neat little set.

There you have it! A nice little set, which was, at one point, actually challenging to build(aligning pieces on the black technic pole that holds the pontoons on was kind of time consuming considering the size of the set!), but is built with some strange ideas, and has a large fault in the rotating engines(Unless this was intended... not sure why it would be... that'd be a strange plane...). It has quality though, it is far better than most new CITY stuff in the way it doesn't have any huge <insert that tiresome argument> pieces. It has the ultrarare and cool Dark Blue pilot minifig, which is a bonus.

It came with another set, 7212... which is a promotional creative building set based on airplanes. So the price was 29.99 CDN, which makes each set worth $15 dollarsish, which gives this 125 piece set a value of 12cents/piece... not too bad!

My (untrained, and totally biassed :-D) rating of the set is 7/10!

You (hopefully!) can see the pictures, so judge for yourself

  3. Lego Pirates...You cant build better than a swashbuckling ship...plus Vikings were Pirates.... *viki*

Damn right... Vikings were the prototype to Pirates...

Bearded, generally hairy, always a little annoyed(or a lot...), sailed in cool looking ships, raided small villages and ships(not 100% sure... did VIkings do this?), and you did NOT want to mess with them.

All around megablocks kicking for both.

I still wish the Viking Lego line was more Castle-based so they would fight humans not not dragons/monsters... it would be great to have a small seaside castle with Royal archers defending against the Longboat...

Oh well... October 26th and still not Viking Lego in Winnipeg. I'm beyond angry.

Phes, I have no heard your story of Pirate Lego... I would be interested in hearing it(err... reading).

  4. Holy crap!

If you look in THIS, you can see... could it be... a JOSHUA TREE on the top of that jagged and rocky island! Its sillouette against the moon...

I remember me and phes joking about The Joshua Tree in an earlier thread... so when I saw this I was shocked.

I long for the day a LEGO JOSHUA TREE appears in a lego set... than all I have to do is get me a minifig head with HUGE shades...

  5. I don't like it. I prefer Eldorado Fortress for its nice colors, or anything from those(err... THAT 1990) idea books. I like the smaller more "Official Lego Set-like" bases that people make... not a fan of ridiculously large models(except some amazing Castles I have seen... but those are just giant "Offical Lego Like" MOC's basically..

    If that made ANY sense...

  6. I was going to say that its the best we got so far... but the name Broadside certainly isn't French... and since they are speaking in English, this one is still completely up in the air...

I'd really like to ask the lego designers what they had in mind for this! Has anyone tried e-mailing?

P.S. I got myself 5 Imperial Armada guys, including 3 with those shiny breastplates(as part of a sweeet deal with a Skulls Eye Schooner) and I have one just like your avatar. He is fighting pirates on the Skulls Eye Schooner until I get my real crew on that thing...

  7. Not to mention that the term PIRATES(and thus the theme!) are a much more specific term than CASTLE. Castle basically includes anything in the Middle Ages - from 500AD-1600AD(Ninja I believe took place in the late 1500's... but I could be totally wrong).

The PIRATES Line only consists of PIRATES, Imperial NAVYMEN to top the Pirates, and any characters on Islands, such as ISLANDERs. It is all supposed to take place in the Carribean. (But like many said, those Islanders are definately not of the Carribean type... Mayans/Azteks would have been 50x better)

Pirates won't meet much inland people, including Inland Native Groups, Colonial Armies, Cossacks, or Revolutionaries. (They of course probably did at times but certainly not all the time.)

If PIRATES was called COLONIAL, or something 1600-1800 ish (Englightment? Gunpowder? I'm not sure what this exact age was called...), than we could include EVERYTHING that I mentioned and more. We could even have a BROTHERS GRIMM line... lol... that'd be kind of cool...

Imagine Napoleonic Lego? It would be just as good as castle, what with Musketeers, Pikemen, Hussars, Dragoons, Cannon carriages, Forts(someones been playing AOE3! :-D ), and of course... PIRATES AND IMPERIAL GUARDS!!

Castle is so much more General than Pirates... if only it weren't.

It comes down to the fact that lego released much more sets and has had much more subthemes for Castle. This adds alot... although a healthy imagination can do anything...

I'm still for Pirates.... I just wish it was expanded or will be sometime in the future.

  8. I think all Castle starting in the early 80's(the 70's castle wasnt for me.. I must be too young to get it... although its 10000x better than this new crap) was damn good. Until the Fright Knights(which were very weak in my opinion).

Ninja shortly gave Castle some nice quality, but besides those cool soldiers from the King Leo line(the ones with the brimmed helmets), Castle has sucked.

Lego Pirate gave a pretty good display of strength through its entire run too, except the 'silly' islanders(wasn't a big fan), and the weaker ship designs of the last year.

  9. This is a really hard choice...

I chose Pirates.. based on the amount of money I just freekin' spent on a Skulls Eye Schooner (came today! And its a force! :-D )

Although I love Castle... and one day... maybe one day.. I will own a mighty collection... (although I have quite a bit of Castle stuff anyway heheh)

  10. The Cross Bone Clipper is really fiesty looking! It doesn't look so bad at all in real life. Those eBay pictures can be sooooo misleading!

Wouldn't they want the set to look as fiesty as possible so people will be eager to bid on it?

These pics showed it inside and out, and its really nothing special!

  11. That ship is awesome Dreamweb! You have also effectively given off a very sinister vibe with the ship - the Red and White color scheme mixed together makes the whole ship feel very 'bleeding'. It is a VERY good vibe for a pirate ship.

I really like the cabin more... the brown doors look better than the white ones that come with the Schooner. (I am assuming you removed the steering mechanism?)

I am also for sure going to remove the green cannon flaps on mine too... not sure what color I will replace them with though. I also love the centerpiece(or whatever the thing on the front is)

I'm going to try making mine have the same kind of thing that is on Riddles Tomb in the new Harry Potter sets! Looks amazing.

Only thing I don't like are the different sails? Is this the look you were going for, or is it simply too hard/expensive to buy matching sails?

And where did you get the chrome sabre?

  12. How did the CBC get 2 votes?! It must be the cool green and black hull... I can't think of any other reason.

    God Bless,

    Nathan

    I agree...

I saw one on Ebay, and considered bidding on it, but than I saw a picture. It is truely an ugly little ship... one sail... terrible design... I would rather spend the $50.00CDN it would most likely end up costing towards a Red Beard Runner or a Imperial Fort of some sort.

I am still the only voter for that Imperial Flagship. Oh well... still love it!

  13. Is there possibly a way to make the Skulls Eye Schooner a much more graceful vessle? I'm turning mine into a Pirate warship(well... its a little more complicated. It all goes into a giant story I am writing for my own entertainment, that I just happen to be replicating with lego!)... but I don't like some of the color choices on the Skulls Eye Schooner and I am thinking of ways to modify it.

I saw someone modified SES that has extra deckspace by putting some long grey plates over the cannons... it looked pretty cool.

And the back of the ship could use some work...

    Any ideas?

(I voted for the BSB awhile back... so I have participated in this! But it clearly doesn't need my help now! Its already 5 ahead now!)

  14. has any one ever tried to build canons whith these:

    http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=2489

perhaps they're too big? but what about a mortar?, like this: http://www.cascade.co.nz/larry/mortar.gif

Good idea, but I think the Brown and Wood detail would make the cannon look like something out of Donkey Kong! (Not that thats wrong, but in a world of Pirates, it would look funny!)

If there were black barrels it may work.

Some of those cannons in the link Norro provided are very cool... I especially like the silver one that has the wagon.

  15. Not totally sure what to think of this line...

If its like Spiderman, than besides a few cool pieces, I don't think it will be too good.

Although Town/City and these superhero lines are different, I look at them in the same way, and if this line is like the Harry Potter/Spiderman lines, than it just means a few good pieces but generally little else.

I am looking forward to the BATMOBILE though, hehehe...

I wish the figures would be yellow... but oh well...
