How strong does my motor setup need to be for this train??

well I've not actually built any of this physically yet. but given the length and weight of the train I just assumed that the 2 M motors wouldn't be nearly enough. the issue possibly turning out to be wheel slipping over motor stalling does make logical sense though. I mean if the loco can pull this all on its own that would be absolutely fantastic. maybe I'm just underestimating the power of the LEGO motors, I've never worked with them before. I was just building the motor coach as a kind of backup because I didn't know if this will actually work physically (i know the builds themselves are solid. i mean the actually motorization/running part) I was just covering all my bases if you will. i would rather not have to do extensive redesigning once I've build the model's physically. though going by what some of you have said. just using M motor's in the motor coach should probably be enough considering the loco already has 2 as well and then that way the RPM's of the motors will be the same. 4 M's would likely move all of this with little problem. the only issue is the different wheel sizes then i guess. the larger XXL drivers of the loco, and the standard small for the coach bogies. though this issue can probably solved with some fancy gear work to make sure the small wheels of the coach are moving at the same pace as the drivers. i guess all that i need to do would be to figure out what those gear ratios are in order to do that. -

they don't share a pin, they have their own independent pin. i am aware how gears work. if anyone actually read what i asked. im not asking HOW to motorize it. im asking if 4 XL motors is powerful enough/not powerful enough or totally overkill based on the size of the train i wish to move. i just want to know if the train would be able to actually move easily enough, not how to move it. In total the whole thing is about 12k parts, i will be using roller bearings and R104 tracks. the locomotive has 2 PU M motors in the boiler attached to the drive wheels. all i want to know is how many motors i should put into my motor coach and/or what size should they be in order to supplement the 2 PU motors in the boiler because i know that those two aren't enough alone. Gordon from the Railway Series (Thomas the Tank Engine) the loco already has 2 PU M motors in the boiler. only ones i could fit unless there is a technique i am unaware of to fit larger and still have the construction be stable. -

Thanks! the colors are bright because I build Thomas characters. The normal train motors are too short for my scale, and I cant build the detail on them that I want. hence actual motors. I'm gonna gear them differently to increase speed. I just wasn't sure of w would be overkill or not or if maybe 2 was enough. I'm not familiar with what they are capable of. or maybe 4 smaller motors instead of XLs? I duno. I absolutely plan on adding bearings. I know that will help a *ton* that's a nice pace for what you've got, Im looking for something similar. granted my train is also much longer and my coaches/engine are bigger and heavier. I also have R88 and R104. I know the wider radius will help in general. yeah, there is plenty of room in the coach for two battery packs. I figure one battery per 2 motors would be sufficient? im more worried about the number and strength of the motors themselves. is 4 overkill? would 2 XLs/4 L motors work just as well maybe? how exactly would i mount this particular piece? im not familiar with this piece. -

I don't have the luxury of being able to test things with physical bricks too often, and I'm trying to figure out how powerful my motor setup should be to be able to move this particular train easily at a decent speed. The grey handrail is a custom part I mocked up. its a stand in for what I want to do, but I wanna do it as legally as possible so I'm still not sure exactly how I'm gonna handle it. The thicker sections all along it are small pieces of the rigid flex tube cut to size, and the thinner part will be some kind of wire or string. But in the render its an antenna with the bottom cut off. -

This time is my Biggest and Best. The LNER A1 Pacific, "Gordon". (With the dinky 3500 Gallon Fowler tender lol) The Tender isn't actually quite finished yet, but its all undercarriage and interior work. What it looks like on the outside is how its gonna stay. Inside the boiler are 2 M motors that power the front and back driver wheels, the tender will carry the battery. (PU system) The rods work like butter and are *mostly* legal! I've actually started building this model physically mostly because of the nature of the front end, I couldn't problem solve that part digitally when building it. Shoutout to a user here Ts__ for answering some question about his LMS Black 5 that I've used as inspiration for how I tackled this guy, and by extension a few other engines I've yet to show off as well as the idea for the articulated front bufferbeam. Gordon and James are actually finished save the tender, still working on finalizing the fowler Tender. Henry is WIP, he's giving me a bit of trouble. I'm just taking my time uploading what I've already got. other things I've finished are Bill & Ben, Annie & Clarabel, The Fllying Scotsman, Bertie the Bus, Rusty, and Skarloey. but I've got more than double that number of things that are WIP. -

Here's another engine! this time its Percy. I based him on the GWR 1338. He's powered by Circuit Cubes. again like Thomas, he's fully buildable and 99% legal (he would be normal green but it looked weird, it was really dark for some reason, so i just made him bright green for the renders.) Hello there! I'm The LEGO Railway Series! For those of you who don't know me from twitter, I model characters from The Railway Series (Thomas the Tank Engine) but I do so as realistically as possible using the actual basis for the characters. So I posted here on Eurobricks once before and just never kept up with the site or the thread. So I'm just gonna start over again! I'm gonna be using this thread as a central place to post all of my stuff to make things easier for myself. So what better model to get this started off with than Thomas! Everyone knows Thomas is an E2, so that's what I've built. He's got as many bells and whistles as I could cram onto the model. He's fully motorized using Power Functions (IR receiver and an M motor) and is powered by a 9v battery in the firebox area. (it needs a custom wire adaptor to transfer the power to the PF components) He also has an entire cab interior with controls and everything. Aside from the side rods which use modified liftarms to attach the flex tubing, the 9v battery adaptor wire, and some custom wheels (I plan on using Breckland Bricks wheels), the entire model is Legal and buildable. Unfortunately I've not been able to physically build this model yet, but I plan on it by before the year is up! hah, this is exactly the same way I build. I've actually learned so much doing it this way because I hate compromising the proportions and the looks of my builds once I've got everything how I want it. Though I'm currently stuck with strictly digital building since I don't have the luxury yet of lots of physical bricks to test out some of my more questionably areas. like right now I'm sweating over the clearance for the leading wheels and the piston on my A1 Pacific. It looks like it should work, but the clearance is soo close I cant be 100% sure it would work unless I test it physically, not to mention the design of the piston itself is fighting me.
